LORDE AT SZIGET.
Photos by Christopher Hall.
"Green Light" is meant to be sung at the top of one's lungs. As Lorde headed towards the finish of her Sziget set on Monday night, she was joined on stage by Caroline Polachek. The two pop stars had the concertgoers in attendance going completely out of their mind. This was a proper finish to a spectacular set from Lorde, who is touring around Europe this summer with no album to promote. She presented new remixes of past old favorites including "Ribs," "Supercut" and "California." It is great to see Lorde in her "why the fuck not" era.

idk how many people have actually seen the show so here’s a quick rundown of tilda :)
she was born in 1998. when the events of the show happen and shit hits the fan, it’s 2022 and she’s 24 years old.
she went to catholic school so alongside all the obvious issues that kind of environment creates, she’s obviously agnostic.
her mother abandoned her when she was a preteen, shortly after her official diagnosis with AGDS ( that she swore “has nothing to do with it” ). her dad was quick to remarry to have a woman in the house, eventually resulting in a half sister that tilda calls his “replacement family”.
every single aspect of her youth was curated by her father. her schooling. her extracurriculars. her boyfriends. in her words: she wasn’t raised, she was bullied. this has resulted in her developing issues with control ( alongside her issues with abandonment ) that she’s constantly working through. the only thing she really had for herself was her taste in music, which began leaning more and more into the alternative/punk genre as she got older. it was her only way to rebel against her strict upbringing.
her relationship with her father is strained at best, almost nonexistent at worst. she hates the control he had over her, hates that he makes her feel replaced by prioritizing her younger sister while she struggled with her illness, but she clings to that familial tie because he was the parent that stayed. their relationship usually consists of: radio silence for weeks, her reaching out in guilt, him complaining that she doesn’t call enough, him not wanting to talk about anything serious when she does, and him sending her money as an apology. rinse and repeat.
as a child, she was diagnosed with Acute Genetic Decay Syndrome ( AGDS ), a relatively rare genetic disease known to reduce life expectancy to 40 years or less. symptoms can vary from person to person but for tilda, it specifically affected her hearing and vocal chords. there was a point in her life that she thought she was going to be unable to speak or hear, which didn’t scare her nearly as much as the thought of not being able to listen or make music.
in 2015, at seventeen years old, her father signed her up as part of an experimental “wellness program” run by famous geneticists, alex sarkov and sydney burke. this program sought to cure AGDS by editing the DNA damaged by the disease and replacing them with healthy stem cells.
despite being told they would be using cells harvested from their own bodies, the stem cells used were synthetic, created by sarkov himself. unbeknownst to tilda and the rest of the program kids, this nonconsensual experimentation was signed off on by their parents. each patient was then given pills to keep their modified cells stable.
tilda continued to take her pills daily, as instructed, for the next seven years without incident. during this time, the band she’d created a couple years prior, the itchy nipples, began to see major local success, going from simple bar gigs to playing large festivals such as bumbershoot. as of 2022, “the itchy nips” have become famous in the local punk rock scene.
it wasn’t until 2022 that shit hit the fan. one month, the refill of her pills failed to show and she began to have to ration the ones she had left. she began having an increase in headaches and an inability to keep pitch brought on by a supposed case of hyperacusis. after a week without the pills and with no call back from sarkov, tilda confronted him at his office where she met juan ruiz and abbi singh, two other wellness program kids who were also experiencing adverse side effects without their pills.
without spoiling too much of the show, the side effects of editing their DNA gave each of them “superpowers” relating to what their AGDS presented as prior to the edited stem cells. tilda gained advanced hearing and a sonic scream ( with the ability to manipulate sound so precisely that near-instant decay or damage on a sub-atomic level is achievable ), essentially becoming a banshee. it’s eventually discovered she also has the secondary ability of regenerative healing, as without it she would be in a constant state of bursting her own eardrums.
