hey maveriques and allies!
the 31st may has been declared maverique visibility day a while ago as that was when maverique was first coined.
the 31st may 2024 is the 10-year anniversary of the coining of maverique.
i feel like this might be a great opportunity for us and our allies to do something to increase visibility of and awareness for maveriques.
i already have a vague plan for a maverique episode on my podcast and i will post something on my instagram as well.
if anyone else has ideas about what we can do as a community, hit me up!
it's time for us to finally move past only being featured as an obscure nonbinary identity, together. it's time for us to be known.

some definitions of "neutral":
not engaged on either side
i may not be engaged in either side of the gender binary, but this definition implies that there are only two sides to begin with, which is incorrect. gender-wise, i am on my own side separately from the other two, and i'm very engaged on it. it also sounds like neutral would be "from the outside looking in", which is also very much not me.
not decided or pronounced as to characteristics
i very much am. characteristics of my gender include autonomy & the unorthodox, the unconventional and all of those are very pronounced. in fact, this conviction itself is part of my gender.
having features or characteristics that are not easily noticed
no. my gender is big and loud.
having no personal preference
i very much have a preference when it comes to my gender. according to western society it's just for the wrong thing. this definition is why "neutral" gives me "meh" vibes, which is very much not true for my gender.
lacking distinguishing quality or characteristics
i feel my gender and it is very distinguished from the two accepted genders in western society.
not expressing strong opinions or feelings
couldn't be me. my gendered feelings are so strong, and personally i consider that to be part of my maveriquehood.
nonaligned
no. i'm aligned with my own gender and people like me. this is why i take issue with calling everyone who isn't masc- or fem-aligned "unaligned". because i am aligned, but what i'm aligned with is simply not considered a valid option, even by lots of non-binary people.
some synonyms of "neutral":
disinterested, detached, uninvolved, indifferent, uncommitted, objective
these again, when applied to gender, sound like someone with a neutral gender doesn't really care much about gender and is more outside observers than actually involved with it, which couldn't be more incorrect for me. i am the walking stereotype of the non-binary person who's involved with vis gender so much and thinks about it a lot. my gender wants to be noticed.
another way that "(gender-)neutral" is used is "universally applicable", for example, they/them being considered a "neutral pronoun" because it can be applied to anyone whose pronouns you don't know, or similarly using inclusive language that can apply to any gender ("people who menstruate" vs "women") and in general, stuff like "gender-neutral clothing" and what not. i guess this kinda sorta would tie in with neutral being a middle ground between all genders. but i don't really vibe with that either. my gender is very much not universally applicable to any gender, because it's specifically defined as existing independently from binary genders. this is also why i stopped using they/them pronouns. the consistent labelling of singular they as "gender-neutral" bothered me so much that i don't want them used. to me personally, it either feels degendering or neutralising, and i'm not agender or neutrois, so i don't want those used if you know what my pronouns are.
and while it wasn't implied by any definition or synonym, one thing i also think of when i hear "neutral" in terms of gender is kind of a mix of all genders, all balancing each other out in a way. a neutral gender would be the middle ground between all existing genders (which is how i've seen it portrayed on one gender spectrum graph). and that is also very much not me.
while i haven't really seen people confuse maverique with neutrois (honestly, neither gender is really well-known enough to have any significant discourse about it), there is the issue of an intracommunity trinary of sorts, where everyone who isn't male, female, masc or fem is put in a "neutral" box. the most common examples is labelling every trans/non-binary person who isn't transmasc or transfem as transneutral or labelling everyone who isn't masc-/male-aligned or fem-/female-aligned as neutral-aligned. this is incorrect for so many non-binary people, not just maveriques. and i guess this post is just me saying how much i relate to Vesper's reasons for coining maverique, and how much it bothers me as a maverique to still be put in a neutral box. but who knows! this may still help someone determine whether the term maverique or neutrois fits them better, or something else entirely.
maverique: why i coined the word

Just a wee reminder that the first recording of neopronouns was 1789, one of the oldest noted examples of neopronouns were 'thon'! And also remember the key word 'recorded' so that means neopronouns could've existed even WAY before that
(Edit! Thon was actually created in 1858! And in 1789 it was 'ou', sry for not updating that quick enough 😅)

Mental health issues have kept me from consistently being online here as well as posting. Seeing the election results right now is honestly devastating.
If you are queer in any way, I am so sorry. But we are in this together. We have to live. We have each other. Please don't give up. The future feels so bleak, but you are not alone. You are needed, you are loved. Living your life is the biggest act of defiance you can do. We can make it through this.

here are all the symbols that have been proposed for maveriques at some point:
Tumblr media
the comet symbol was proposed as planet symbols (at the time of its proposal) were associated with binary gender, but it still keeps the pattern of celestial objects. it never really picked up as it was also already being used as a general nonbinary symbol. now it has pretty much fallen out of use entirely. the problem with the comet symbol is that when the unicode character is inserted somewhere, it turns into an emoji and looks nothing like the picture.
Tumblr media
the earth symbol was briefly considered for maveriques because it's a planet symbol, but it was quickly discarded after some sources stated its use as an intersex symbol. i don't know if nowadays it's actually used as an intersex symbol. i've never seen it and have seen other symbols for intersexness instead. the earth symbol has the same problem as the comet symbol.
Tumblr media
the sun symbol was proposed due to the colours of the maverique flag, as well as maveriques' "burning inner conviction" about their gender. it follows the pattern of using celestial objects while not using a planet. the symbol isn't used much for maveriques though, as in many cultures the sun is associated with masculinity. especially after solarian was coined, the sun became even more associated with masculinity in nonbinary spaces. nowadays, this sun symbol is sometimes used as a disabled symbol.
Tumblr media
the pluto symbol was suggested because it follows a pre-established pattern of gender symbols (celestial objects closest to the sun) and it doesn't look like the venus and mars symbols, setting it apart from binary gender symbols. this symbol never really picked up.
Tumblr media
this symbol was designed on a tumblr blog that no longer exists. the meaning of the symbol is explained like this: "the line in the center of the circle represents the binary and the filled in circle represents maveriques not being any part of it. the lines going sideways and extending in both directions is to show that no one is the same yet the people who identify as maverique have this identity in common." while the meaning is explained, it's still unclear. despite that, this seems to be the most commonly used maverique symbol. because this is not a symbol that already existed, there's no unicode character.
Tumblr media
this symbol was created by me a few months ago. the circle is a common component of gender symbols nowadays. the two small circles on the left and right symbolise the gender binary. the bigger circle in the middle symbolises maveriques, not "touching" the gender binary. there's no unicode character for this, because it's not a pre-existing symbol.

i "use" Mv casually and i pronounce it like "miv" more in line with Mx or Ms, but it's all made up so there is no wrong.
Here are some new honorifics I came up with! (And don't forget to check out this post that lists some already existing gender neutral honorifics.)
♡ General:
Nr. - "neutral"; can also pronounce as 'ner' Nb. - "enby"; can also pronounce as 'nib' Nn. - 'none', inspired by 'nonbinary' or being genderless Du. - "dual", inspired by having two genders Bd. - "blend", inspired by having two genders Tr. - "tri", inspired by having three genders Pn. - "pan", like 'pangender' or pan-anything Omn. - "omni", like 'omnigender' or omni-anything Ab. - "ab", like 'abinary' Mv. or Mvr. - "maverique" or "maverick"; can also pronounce as 'mav' Vd. - "void", inspired by 'gendervoid' Xr. - "zer" Xrs. - "zers"; can be a soft or hard S (The previous two can also be Zr. and Zrs.)
♡ Dragon Inspired:
Dra. or Drg. - "dragon"; can also pronounce as 'drag' Drc. - "draconic"; can also pronounce as 'drak' Hd. or Hrd. - "hoarder"; can also pronounce as 'herd' Fl. - "flame" Fr. or Fir. - "fire"; can also pronounce as 'fear' or 'fur' Wng. - "wing" Fng. - "fang" Str. or Stm. - "storm" Srp. - "serp", inspired by 'serpent' Wyr. or Wr. - "wyrm"
♡ Other Nonhuman Inspired:
Cr. - "cryptid" Rb. - "robot"; can also pronounce as 'rob' or 'robe' Cy. or Cb. - "cyborg"; can also pronounce as 'cy' or 'cybe' Mns. or Mtr. - "monster" Crt. - "creature" Om. - "omen"; can also pronounce as 'ome' or 'om' A. or Al. - "alien" Mg. or Mag. - "magic"; can also pronounce as 'maj' or 'mage' Amg. - "amalg", inspired by 'amalgamation' Atm. - "autom" like the beginning of 'automaton'
♡ Nature Inspired:
W. or Ww. - "willow" Asp. - "aspen" Pne. - "pine" Frn. - "fern" Flw. - "flower"; can also pronounce as 'flow' Stg. - "stag" F. or Fe. - "fae" or "faerie" (note that 'Fe' is the elemental abbreviation for iron, and iron is toxic to actual faeries. Might be good to keep in mind for faekin and fae headmates!) Flr. - "flora"; can also pronounce as 'fler' Fn. - "fauna" Lf. - "leaf" Bg. - "bug" Vrd. - "verd", inspired by 'verdant'
Do honorifics seem kind of silly? Well, besides the formality of them, they could work for anyone who might view them as a status. Fictives might have a certain ranking or status from their source. Otherkin might see their species as having some kind of required rank or formality based on the culture. Nonhumans in general might want to do away with any honorifics that refer to them as human, gendered or not. I think they could be useful and fun! 💙💚
Some example sentences below:
"This is Nr. Apollo and xe are visiting the local college to talk about xer experiences as an agender person. Have you been to one of xer lectures? I love to listen to xem talk. Go check out Nr. Apollo when you get the chance."
"Cy. Silver doesn't consider itself human and instead, it is robotkin! Its special interest is technology, old video games, and documentaries on animals. I hope Cy. Silver takes care of itself today!"
"Say hello to Str. Orion when you see em. Ey are headed to the store right now to get emself some new pencils. Ey really like to draw mythical creatures in eir sketchbook. If you ask, ey might show you some of eir work."

autigender enby/enban/nonbinary autigender androgyne autigender agender autigender neutrois autigender maverique
[other post] (autigender man/woman flags)
(can also be called autienby/autimav/etc.) I don't know any specific androgyne/agender/neutrois equivalents to boy/girl/man/woman, so I just listed them as this. If anyone knows those words, these flags can be used for those too. (I tried looking it up, but wasn't able to find anything besides the general nonbinary/enby/enban and maverique specific words unfortunately.)
─────────────
Here's the second set of autigender alt flags :D
There's two flags for each term, one with a white symbol, and another with a dark color symbol. They both mean the same thing, feel free to use whichever one looks prettier / easier on the eyes to you.
The symbol used is the autigender symbol by @themogaidragon. The colors for each are just what's typically associated with them/their flags, with extra adjacent colors based on the main colors.
I really like how these flags came out. Autinonbinary and autiandrogyne are my favorite, the colors are really nice :)

honestly, masculinity and femininity are already highly subjective, and so is maverinity and everything else. for example, i'm always presenting maverine, no matter if i'm wearing a dress and dangly earrings or a big hoodie, no matter if people look at me from the outside and think something about me is "feminine" or "masculine". i refuse to ever call myself or my presentation masculine or feminine no matter what some norms say.
but i also know that how people see us is important, and that's the hard part. anything that's not either conventionally feminine or masculine is highly subjective, even for outside observers. even when i dress in a way that most people wouldn't see as overly masculine or overly feminine, most people would still put me in one box or another because they've been taught to put everyone in a binary. it can literally be as simple as "everyone i know who wears those kind of trousers is a man, so this person must be a man" or "most people i know who wear rings are women, so this person is probably a woman". even if lots of people couldn't place us, it's pretty much impossible to nail it with everyone.
and then there's also the problem what you said, that there's no "look" associated with maveriques (which is probably for the better, tbh). in terms of presentation, people only really know (or think they do) what masculinity, femininity, androgyny & maybe neutrality/ungenderedness look like.
most people couldn't even tell apart androgyny (a blend of masculinity & femininity) from neutrality/ungenderedness (the absence of anything that could be easily gendered as masculine or feminine), so either of those would be a good bet (and you can call it maverine, because again, subjective.
if what's considered androgyny has too many masculine or feminine elements for your liking, there are two options: if you don't want to be bold, incorporate as many elements that can't easily be put into masculine or feminine categories because they are quite literally neutral. clothes that don't fit too tight but not too loose, hair that's not too short and not too long etc. and if you do want to be bold about it, present in a way that's so out there that it's essentially almost too alien to be gendered. for me personally, my name and neopronouns are part of that, as well as some of the space themed clothing i have. it's convenient that i'm a trekkie because in certain trek related clothing i feel like people primarily see me as "geek" than anything gendered.
(and i want to be gendered, gendered as maverique, but let's be honest, that's unfortunately not gonna happen. unfortunately when it comes to outside perspective, we have to settle for androgyny or neutrality and being overall confusing.)
if you're not primarily worried about outside perspectives, just fuck around and find out what gives you maverine gender euphoria, what affirms your maverinity, what makes you look at yourself and go "this is so gender". i've also found that because maverinity doesn't really exist in mainstream society at all that this feeling is more subtle, like "this is so me".
maverinity doesn't have a look, but at the same time it's useful to remind yourself that masculinity and femininity also don't really have looks: more often than not those terms are just imposed on certain objects or people because binaries are normalised. but i have seen lots of people who consider skirts and dresses and nail varnish part of their masculine gender presentation and people who consider ties and suits part of their feminine gender presentation, so maverinity can look like anything.
at the end of the day, maverine presentation is what makes you feel like you.
Question For Maveriques (And Others)
So I find that when my gender is maverique, or leaning towards that direction, I have the urge to present that way, but I have a very difficult time imagining what a maverine gender presentation would even look like. It would be a presentation that's not masculine or feminine, but its own thing entirely (and also not genderless or neutral) but I'm not sure what that would look like (and how it would differ from genderless presentation since I'm also genderless.) My question is, what ideas do you have about what a maverine presentation might look like? Cause I'm struggling here.
