Hurricanes Nail Home Super Rugby Quarterfinal Against Highlanders

The Hurricanes finished the Super Rugby Pacific regular season with a 41-14 victory in Wellington with to three tries to winger Salesi Rayasi.

They entered the playoffs with a 1-0 lead thanks to their victory, but the Blues may join them if they defeat the Chiefs at Eden Park and earn extra points as well.

The Hurricanes put on a convincing display, winning seven tries to two, and securing a home quarterfinal for the following weekend.

They had to face a “tough, resilient, gritty” Highlanders team in addition to whirling, gusting winds that made kicking and long passes challenging, but Jordie Barrett, who made key crucial plays in the middle, said they were motivated to close off the regular season strong.

“The thing we spoke about during the week was that over the last few seasons all we wanted was a home quarterfinal and I guess the great thing was that it was in our control tonight, and we managed to get a bonus point win, so again it’s out of our control now,” he stated to Sky Sport.

Matt Whaanga’s drive for a goal in the third minute gave the Highlanders a hiss and scream to start, but the Hurricanes quickly settled into a groove. News for The Daily Rugby

An escalating After an injury, Asafo Aumua made a significant comeback and set up Rayasi for his first try. After flanker Du’Plessis Kirifi scored, Aumua sent TJ Perenara off for another try, and Rayasi scored his second.

The fact that the Hurricanes answered right away, with Kirifi taking three defenders over the line, after the Highlanders tied the score with a try by Fabian Holland in the 33rd minute, is indicative of their strong play this season.

The Highlanders’ situation worsened when Connor Garden-Bachop was sent off for an ugly head clash with Will Tucker.

Later, after another altercation with Tucker, Sam Gilbert met the same fate—time in the trash can.

In the second half, the Highlanders needed to take the lead, but Rayasi’s deft touch to cap off a relentless Hurricanes effort gave the southerners no opportunity.

Brayden Iose gave it another go after that. Sixth place is where the Highlanders end the regular season.

Coach Clarke Dermody made seven changes from their starting lineup, preserving some of their top players for the quarterfinals the next weekend, thus they were far from full strength.

Blues take on Highlanders at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday, June 2, at 7:05 p.m. As the Highlanders travel to Auckland to play the Blues for the Gordon Hunter Memorial Trophy, there is a lot on the line in the last round robin game of the year.

A victory would guarantee a spot in the top eight play-offs, but a defeat would necessitate depending on other outcomes.

The team’s exciting victory over the Queensland Reds was delivered by players who have been trusted by head coach Clarke Dermody. The sole alteration is that Scott Gregory moves to the right flank in place of Jonah Lowe, who drops out of the starting 23 and joins Fetuli Paea on the bench.

With Adrian Choat (shoulder) out and All Black Akira Ioane restricted to bench duty as part of a customized All Blacks rest plan, Papalii’s return following the completion of a World Rugby Coaching Intervention Programme and serving the first two weeks of a three-game suspension comes at a perfect time for the third-placed Blues.

This results in Papalii returning to a reorganized loose trio at No. 8 (Hoskins Sotutu is on rest with the All Blacks), youthful prospect Anton Segner being selected at No. 7, and the gruff Tom Robinson receiving a well-earned chance at No. 6 in his final game.

Donaldson Smacks 2 HR’s In Jays Win.

The Minnesota Twins have had a tough time with the Toronto Blue Jays in the past, which made it surprising when they started 2017 with a (3-1) record against them. Last night was like old times as the Jays beat the Twins in a close game. Tonight was more of the same at Target Field. Josh Donaldson wasted no time in this one getting the Jays on the board. He smoked an Adalberto Mejia fastball into the second deck in left for a solo shot. This put the Jays up 1-0 after an inning of action. In the fourth, Donaldson led-off with a single to left and Justin Smoak knocked him home with a double. Jose Bautista and Kendrys Morales singled and the Jays were up 3-0. Meanwhile, Marco Estrada cruised through four no-hit inning. Eddie Rosario ended the no-hit bid when he crushed a Marco Estrada fastball out to right for a solo homer. This pulled the Twins within two after five frames. Trevor Hildenberger came on for the Twins in the eighth inning and was awful. Ezequiel Carrera and Josh Donaldson started the inning with singles. Justin Smoak was intentionally walked after a Donaldson stolen base to load up the bases. Then, Jose Bautista hit a looper past Brian Dozier to drive in two runs. Kendrys Morales added one more with an RBI single to center and Toronto led 6-1. In the bottom of the eighth, Eduardo Escobar drilled a Marco Estrada fastball out to deep right field. The solo shot pulled the Twins within four, but it was no use. Estrada dominated the Twins through eight innings and the Jays were well on their way. Josh Donaldson added the extra point in the ninth with a blast off Gabriel Moya. The Jays led by five and Matt Dermody threw a clean ninth to cap off the victory.

-Final Thoughts-Adalberto Mejia’s stuff looked good at time, but his layoff didn’t help. He gave up the homer to Donaldson then the walls caved in during the fourth inning. He lasted three-plus innings and allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Dillon Gee threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, Alan Busenitz retired all five men he faced, and Trevor Hildenberger gave up three runs without retiring a batter. Michael Tonkin struck out two in the eighth and Gabriel Moya gave up a run in the ninth. The Twins scattered four hits tonight and hit 0-for-3 with men in scoring position. They left three men on base. This team struggles against guys who can really pitch. Marco Estrada changes speeds and has a great change-up. The Twins struggle with Jason Vargas, Matt Boyd, and Marco Estrada. All guys who know how to pitch. Tomorrow will decided the season series. Joe Biagini will face Kyle Gibson in the season finale.
