Annie Besant: 'I will speak for all the despairing silent ones'
SUNDAY SUPPLEMENT: Last month, the Phoenix Retirement Association in Crystal Palace hosted one of its regular talks, this time about the Victorian radical Annie Besant, a woman who led the matchgirls’ strike, popularised the cause of birth control, was courted by George Bernard Shaw, admired by Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, and visited by Gandhi, and who played an important part in Indian independence.…

Glad I’m not the only one who hates HTTYD 3’s ending and it’s implications. How are humans supposed to earn the right to see dragons again if they’re always kept apart? What will happen to all those wild sea dragons forced to relocate to the Hidden World? What happened to the other dragons around the world? Did Toothless and his girlfriend seriously go on a conquest to force them all into the Hidden World?
The script specifically makes note of the fact that Toothless commands the dragons to go to the Hidden World, an alpha's command being something they're usually physically incapable of disobeying.
It's why Homecoming is the most depressing Christmas short you'll find outside of The Little Matchgirl. All the progress the characters have made is lost, humans are back to fearing dragons, Hiccup is mocked and disrespected by both his family and the Berkians, Toothless's wife emotionally abuses him, and dragons are doomed to an eternity of life away from the sun. Happy Snoggletog!

As you know i’m making a musical abt the matchgirl strike of 1888 thats inspired on the newsies musical.
Now there was a reporter, Herberth Something, who helped the match girls. I’m like genuinely conciddering to passive aggressively make him Sarah Chapmans love interest and the best part is that it would even sorta make sense with my plot because the reporter that brings them to victory is Annie Besant.
Anyway i wasn’t gonna do any love interest or generally no romantic subplot but the temptation is huge and now i can’t choose. Is it too much???

Red Hat Man
*******************************************************************
I will eventually post a recording, but for now, here are the lyrics to "Red Hat Man", a St. Stephen's Day parody of "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. In this story, our St Nick was traumatized by the death of his best friend Stephen. A wren is the yearly target of his rage, representing the wren who sang to wake the guards when Stephen tried to escape. Sherlock and John are intrigued by the mystery of this serial killer and have been set on the case by the Irregulars.
Originally inspired by @totallysilvergirl 's The Holly and the Ivy: December Drabbles Chapter - 26: Boxing Day. I'd link it, but A03 is down. :(
*******************************************************************
*Begin urban jungle groove of a beat walker* *Goth Matchgirl match flicks alight*
*smokey voice begins*
Take a little walk in London Town and go across the Thames. Where the viaduct looms where a bird met doom The water shifts and bends. No secrets hide from his scraping eyes. Our Sherlock hunts his prize, But Nick, he knows he’s gonna get away, Past the roofs, past the wharf, past the banks, past the rats. On a stretcher white lies the Bloody Wren! Watching from afar is the Red Hat Man.
*Jingle bells of quiet horror*
He does his job, checks his list, tells you if you’ve been a Good boy. He’ll hide his vengeful dreams, rekindled rancor from a lifetime Or ten before. His Stephen’s brutal faint, face dripping like red paint! He became a saint, But that won’t ever kill Nick’s memory. He’s an elf, he’s a ghost, he’s the Judge, he’s a huntsman. Sherlock’s on his trail through this godforsaken land! John writes whispers up of the Red Hat Man.
*Jingle bells of quiet horror* *Oscillator of spookification*
You don’t have no clothes? He’ll drop you some. You don’t have respect? He’ll get you a gun. You need a way to get your little girl a pink tea set, Well, don’t you worry buddy, 'cause here he comes. Through the homes and the flats and the corners and the slums. He gives what’s needed, and sometimes what’s needed can Bring the heat down upon the Red Hat Man.
*Jingle bells of quiet horror* *Gothic guitar of guilt* *Organ of avian anxiety*
You see him in your movies; you see him in your dreams. He always looks so jolly and fat, but he ain't what he seems. You'll see him in your tales on the TV screen, And hey buddy, you had better not tick him off! He’s an elf, he’s a ghost, he’s the Judge, he’s a huntsman. Strike out the possible to understand his plan, The impossible killer called the Red Hat Man.
*Outro of previous creepy Christmas cheer and distant Hunt hounds baying*

Hey can someone explain to me the musical references in Starkid's VHS Christmas Carol? Like, I know Marley, GoC Past, Present, and Future reference specific musicians and styles in the 80s, but I'm not well-versed enough to actually pick up on who they are references to.
Like, I think Belle is Whitney Houston inspired? And Christmas Past is something like Judi Sheppard Misset, and Chirstmas Present has some Michael Jackson influence, but I know I'm missing a lot and I'm sure someone out there knows all of this much better
Also any stylistic references in VHS Christmas Carols in Gift of the Magi and Little Matchgirl would be helpful too
