I’m especially curious about people’s thoughts on how some character deaths don’t make that much sense (glaring at the Thane writing) versus the need to have actual stakes in a story and making it feel like the war costs Shepard personally.

A little something for the Mass Effect Trilogy Appreciation Week.

Day 1 - Family, and Day 2 - Friendships have a lot of overlap centered on one OC and the impetus for my first Mass Effect fic. And she wasn't planned in the slightest.

It started with revisiting ME3, reaching the 'Lola' scene, and wondering if and why my Darcy Shepard would tolerate that nickname. Then, the notion that she'd had worse nicknames - and that left the empty space of 'who from?' Enter the OC.

Her surname, Graves, came first, then Kayla - she just kept mentally turning up during my commute, familiar like she'd always been part of the story. There was a physicality and attitude, all forming with inexplicable clarity. In hindsight, I've figured out a few of the influences, but it remains the most forcible manifestation of an OC ever I've experienced.

Mikayla Graves is a spunky, non-combat L2 biotic and Darcy's best friend and de facto adopted sister, making a family of 3 with Hannah. Because Darcy isn't a biotic, it's Kaidan and Kayla who provide the lens to flesh out the muddy history of biotics and L2s - Kaidan as a (mostly) success story, and Kayla as the could-have-been-worse civilian. I've got so much more to say for my fic interpretation of ME, and hopefully there'll be time for it one day.

All right [cracks knuckles] I'll start from the top.

Mass Effect (original trilogy): Commander Adriana Shepard. I named her after my husband because he introduced me to the game. NOT VERY ORIGINAL, but named with love? 🤣

Mass Effect Andromeda: Mara Ryder. I honestly cannot remember why I chose this name for her. Vibes, probably? I often just pick a name that "feels" right...

Dragon Age Inquisition: okay, I made up sooo many fucking Lavellans, and when I first started writing, most of them were just named after Game of Thrones characters. This includes Elia, Arya, and Lyanna.

(By now, you may have noticed that all my OCs have names ending in "a". I do like names ending in "a." I am consistent that way. 😂)

Athera Lavellan is the DA:I OC whose name is the most thought-out. I borrowed it from FenxShiral's Elvhen book of names, and it means 'part of a dream', which thematically tied into her romance with Abelas.

But then there's Tamaris, which is another name that I chose because of vibes (it "felt right"). I will admit that I know someone named Tamaris and I love the name, but I was also surprised to find that this is coincidentally a name from FenxShiral's name dictionary - a fact that I used in my fic of her and Felassan.

Dragon Age 2: Rynne Hawke. Her name was also chosen for vibes; 'Rynne' struck me as a kind of fun, playful name. I think in-world, she is named after a great-aunt. (It's been a while since I revisited her, I think this is the lore. 🤣)

Dragon Age Origins: Yara Mahariel. BACK TO THE TRIED AND TRUE METHOD OF USING GAME OF THRONES NAMES. 🤣💀

Baldur's Gate 3: my main Tav is Eilaena Valderol, aka Brynn Bladetongue. THIS WAS THE NAME I THOUGHT ABOUT THE MOST. Her birth name, Eilaena, is a drow name broadly inspired by the goddess Eilistraee. Her last name is her mother's name, which I used a D&D name generator to come up with. Her criminal alias, Brynn , was borrowed from an adventurer she admired who was a regular at the theater-tavern where she grew up. 'Bladetongue' is a stagename-like surname that she came up with; in her words, it's masturbatory (flattering herself for her silver tongue), and she likes the alliteration. She's half-wood elf/half-drow, and she purposely gave herself a human-sounding alias to fuck with people LOL.

My other BG3 OC is Tavanah. I liked the idea of using the default "non-special" name of 'Tav', but making it special by having her romance, Rolan, be the only one who calls her by her full name.

I'm more on PC when I play other games. If I don't cry myself playing Sims, I play Warframe instead! So like, if I'm tired of taking pictures and stuff in Sims, I take pictures in Warframe instead...like this:

I also play Mass Effect (both the Trilogy and Andromeda). Recently, I've received Fallout 76 from a friend, and I've been having fun playing it! Other than those, I also play Left 4 Dead 2 with friends when time permits. Base on the games I mentioned, I probably lean towards hack-and-slash and shooter games, story-rich, and character customization. I have other games that I don't play that much anymore (because of time...sigh), like the Gods Eater series. I've finished all Dragon Age games, and I don't want to touch my current world state anymore, unless the next DA game gets released. If I don't want to get stressed on shooting stuff, I get stressed on planning my agenda in Stardew Valley!

If I don't want any of those, I just hop on Roblox

When it comes to character customization, it's either I try to make my character as close to myself (self-insert) or an entirely new OC.

Alright, let's see...

Of Devils and Monsters (Attack on Titan; Erwin x OC) Status: In Progress (7/??) This has to be my first one up, because it's one that has my full attention and entire heart!

Summary: Fate brings two old friends together again and sets them on the path to truth. In a last ditch effort to save her own skin, Lozen Daniella Pierce reaches out to an old friend in hopes of gaining her freedom. In doing so, she and Erwin Smith find themselves thrust on a path to truth- the truth behind the walls, behind secret organizations, and the truth of who they turned into. Rating will go up, but I am setting it at M for now. Eventual Levi x OC in later chapters.

2. If It's True (Dragon Age: Inquisition; Solas x OC) Status: In progress, but on hold for the time being This is another one of my babies near and dear to my heart that I plan on picking up soon once I replay DAI.

Summary: Before the veil was erected, the Elvhenan empire was a sight to behold, with towering cities of crystal and gold, plenty of resources to go around, and Elves and Spirits lived in harmony. But there was a dark underbelly rarely acknowledged- at least until Solas encounters a woman who changes his views of his beloved people and puts him on the path to ending the tyranny of the Evanuris.

Acrid odor assaulted her senses as Makeda pulled her friend along through the burning prefab building, hard spilling out of the corners of her eyes as smoke stung her eyes. Gunfire and screams took over any thought as instinct kicked in- where that instinct came from, she had no idea, but Makeda wasn’t about to question it now.

“What the hell is going on?” Cindy screamed as they scrambled over rubble. 

“Why would I know? Just run!” Just as they rounded the corner, they were met with a beeping followed by a force that sent the pair flying.

Present 

“Shepard! Shepard! Kei-” A hand pulled her down beside a hedge as a cutting beam narrowly missed her left ear as  she was brought back. Horizon, the Collectors. Abducted colonists. Everything was a blur since they touched down.

Specks of blue cleared the fog from her brain just enough for her to pick up on the worried twitch of mandibles. “We’re pinned down, Shep. Any ideas?” 

Kei peered over the barrier to be greeted by a line of husks ambling beside a praetorian. She took a shot at one of the mindless puppets before taking cover. It crumbled to the ground, twitching just a moment before it went completely still. “What’s the heat clip situation?” Kei asked as she summoned her drone to distract the enemies. With a beep and a whirl, as if it was assenting to unspoken orders, it was off, zooming the crowded field to distract their enemies for a moment. 

“Would advise using abilities as much as possible until another cache,” came Mordin’s voice over comms. “Did find particle beam dropped by assassin drone- could be useful against biotic barrier of the praetorian.” His efficiency with words always brought a smile to her face in the heat of battle. 

“Right, Garrus, cover me. Mordin, get that gun prepped.”

“Mark, get down,” Cindy hissed from their hiding spot under the rubble, trying to get their classmate to hide from sight. Her voice didn’t carry over the conflict around them, and Mark fell right before their eyes. Before Cindy could scream, Makeda covered her mouth. 

“You want them to find us?” Makeda whispered, trying her best to stop her voice from shaking. “We need to keep moving. If we make it to my place, we can at least defend ourselves.” 

Silent tears streaked through the ash on her friends face as she nodded. 

“At least he can be a distraction. We need to move, and quickly.” Without waiting for an answer, Makeda began to belly crawl from under the fallen wall. The Batarians wouldn’t get her or her family. 

Present

The vibration radiating from the particle beam made the aiming difficult as Makeda tried to balance not dropping the damned thing while evading the constant stream of deadly energy from the last remaining enemy. In her periphery, she saw Mordin and Garrus alternating their shots in an attempt give her a break from the seemingly singular focus of the Praetorian. For a brief moment, the enemy’s beam was interrupted, giving her time to duck behind a crate and quickly catch her breath.  “I think we have it,” she yelled. “Just one final push. When it’s back in the air, I’ll take down its biotic barrier with a taste of its own medicine, and then Mordin and Garrus, throw everything you’ve got at it.”

The ground beneath her shook as the bombardment against her house continued. Cindy’s body remained unmoving from it’s fetal position- any sign of life had left hours ago. It had been a mistake coming here to try and find her family. All that had greeted them was an empty house, already rifled through for any supplies or survivors. 

Crisp air and soot made her eyes water.

Makeda hugged her knees into her chest, rocking back and forth as though it would be the only thing keeping the sobs at bay.  Should she wait or continue in hopes of finding her family?

Present

Makeda lept from cover sending the remaining power of the gun careening into the floating creature. One final push. That was all it took until the creature shuddered and then evaporated into dust. Feeling uneasy, Makeda’s legs gave away beneath her, and she welcomed the thud of reality. The visions would stop. 

‘They will, won’t they?’

Footsteps from either side of her came running up to her position as Mordin began applying medi-gel to the burns sustained from the Praetorian’s beam. She welcomed the cold the medicine brought in hopes it would just serve as additional grounding to reality. 

“Good call on the Collector’s gun, Mordin,” Makeda said, and her eyes flickered over to Garrus, hoping he didn’t catch the waiver in her voice. 

Mordin went to respond, but was interrupted by the cowardly colonist they had run into hurling curses and insults their way. Garrus helped her to feet and tried to keep a steadying talon on her shoulder to be brushed off as Makeda rounded on the mechanic. 

“What the hell did you want us to do, huh? Most of the colonists were gone by the time we made a dent in their forces. I wanted to save them as much as you did-”

“Bullshit! Why would you care about a bunch of colonists out in the sticks?”

A voice stopped all of them in their tracks. “Show some reverence, Trevor, you’re standing in the presence of a ghost.”

That voice. She knew that voice. 

All anger dissipated as she turned to see the one face she needed to see. Needed to know was alright. “Kaidan!”

Some thoughts on my Mass Effect playthrough so far:

I attempted to make my Shepard look like me but he ended up looking more like my dad with a buzzcut than me.

When you grow up playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 most other third person shooters don't feel good in comparison. This one ain't the exception.

The Eden Prime and Citadel intro reminded me a lot of the intro level and planet in KOTOR. I must say tho, with the change in gameplay style I did not struggle anywhere near as much as I did initially with the older game.

We've got a nice supporting cast so far. I particularly like Garrus and Tali, but as a fan of non human humanoids this was bound to happen (my Star Wars OC is a Rodian)

I love the relatively serious tone the game has in comparison to the swashbuckling and melodrama I got tired of in Star Wars. Mass Effect and Star Trek have arrived in my life at just the right time.

So far I haven't really seen a Renegade speech option that enticed me to pick it compared to a neutral or Paragon option. I hope there are more compelling Renegade moments as the game progresses so I can occasionally be an asshole despite still over wanting to be an alright person overall

Genuinely feel Mass Effect's normalisation of the dialogue wheel and the voiced, set protagonist is one of the worst things to happen to the western RPG genre, and I can only hope the wild success of bg3 will course correct high budget rpgs back to the non-streamlined dialogue systems and voiceless player OC protagonists of old, as while this may arguably harm cinematic presentation, being able to have full ownership of your character in this genre is far more valuable. It's so valuable that I don't think I would even like bg3 nearly as much if the protagonist was a commander Shepard style character.

Big Place Exchange FAQ

1 What is the Big Place Exchange? - The Big Place Exchange is a fan art/fan fic gift exchange that focuses on Kaidan Alenko from Mass Effect and his relationships.

2) What can be given/received in the exchange? -Art and/or fic is welcome. When you sign up, you'll be able to choose which (or both!) you'd like to give/receive.

3) Fan Fic requirements (for the gifter):

Minimum word count is 1,000. There is no maximum word count.

Fic cannot be part of a series and must be able to stand alone.

If you choose to write a treat, it's not constrained by the 1,000 word minimum. Treats are not an obligations… just that, a TREAT!

You must tag appropriately on AO3 for explicit content if it's included.

Giftee's DNWs MUST be respected.

4) Art requirements (for the gifter):

Art can be computer or hand drawn and must be complete and must be a unique work - ie, not a screenshot with a filter on it.

5) How the exchange goes down: 4.1 Sign ups You'll be able to fill out a form here on AO3 for what you would like to receive and give. They don't have to be the same! You have to request/offer at least ONE version of shenko (fshenko, mshenko, or shenko). For your requests, please go into detail about what you'd like to receive. Give your gifter some ideas about what you'd like to see. Let them know what ratings you prefer and give them ideas to get them started if you'd like! It's imperative that you include a list of things that you DNW (Do Not Want). We cannot take action for DNWs in a fic unless they were specifically listed as such.
