MARY AND NEIL ESCAPED THROUGH A TUNNEL THAT CONNECTED THE CELLAR TO THE GARAGE!

in my mind i image this tunnel to be just a small thing, the dirt crumbling around the round walls. mary must have led neil out, fingers scaping into the walls in the haste to get out as fast as possible. do you ever think when they finally made it out she took a second to look at her dirty shoes and the dirt inbetween her nails and thought, “i did it.” with a grim determination she never felt before?

do you ever think neil would look down at his nails after she died and think about that day they left; the dirt under his nails that turns to blood as he remembers her dying?

do you ever think he looked at the blood and dirt and though, “we never really did it.”

do you ever think that when he was down there in the cellar remebering where he was and how he ran that he looked down at his hands, saw the dirt again, and was sad because he knew mary tried and- and they never really did it. and now they are both gone, one dead, one dying.

do you ever think that, after he survies, he looks down at his hands in that hospital bed and sees the dirt and thinks, “we actually did it, and you arent here to see it.”

trans Neil could actually make so much sense if you think about it because imagine they’re on the run, and Neil says to Mary ‘mom what if I started dressing like a boy’ and Mary, hellbent on disguising them, thinks that a fantastic idea, and immediately agrees. And then Neil is like, ‘maybe I could change my name to more boy names’ and Mary agrees even more. It’ll be harder to find them. Meanwhile it settles something in Neil, makes him feel about as at home as he could be in a body on the run.

like she's still on the run years later and stops at a rest stop or a bar or something to take a breather and on the tv she sees the spitting image of her ex-husband, playing a sport she hates, and fury courses through her.

how dare this child that she threw away her entire exsitence for, have the audacity to live a life? a successful, happy, [relatively] free life? and she's here still running, falling back on her fear to keep her going.

idk what happens after this either she tracks him down or doesn't but if i wanted to make this a happy(?) ending i say she does. she does and she realizes that her son is the bravest person she's ever known and she knows he'll never forgive her for what she put him through but maybe she reaches back out to stuart and maybe her and neil keep in contact. or maybe she doesn't. but anytime she stop to take a breath she puts the radio station or tv channel to an exy broadcast in the hopes of seeing him live a life she never thought he'd get to have.

Am I the only one who can see a parallel with Stuart & Mary Hatford and Jean & Elodie Moreau?

The older brothers both lost contact to their little sisters, who got sold for money/connections, only to find out years later they were killed before they got to meet them again.

One of the things I've always personally believe about Mary Hatford is that, when she married Nathan, she was incredibly young, like 14/15 and he was much older than her, like in his 30’s. She had Neil when she was still a teenager, maybe 17 or 18, and Nathan had already started loosing interest in her by then because, ya know, she was no longer A CHILD, but her becoming a mother was the last straw. That's when Nathan stopped caring about her and really started showing his true colors. When Mary and Neil run, Marys in her late twenties and she's just shy of 40 when she dies.

Neil has always known about the age difference, in the back of his mind, but he’d never really thought about it until he was talking to Andrew and it came up. It takes him several days to process what it all means and then several more days to grieve his mother’s childhood. Andrew, unlike any other time Neil gets upset about his mother, keeps his mouth shut while Neil deals with this particular shit storm.

did they first meet when they were young? just sixteen at a function where both their families met up for some business, both being rebels and starting up a conversation

maybe he was charming, maybe she was the deadly one between them

maybe they fell quick and hard, mary running away from her family to live with him in the us

she probably hated when he got more involved in the work of his family, and the moriyamas work

how old was she when she first spoke up against it, against the blood and the murder and torture,

the same age when he first hit her?

how scared was she when she found out she was pregnant with neil, was nathan already hitting her? how often? did he force her to keep neil?

when did the puppy love first wear off? with the first hit? when he first hit neil?

was it when she saw him kill someone for the first time, the glint in his eyes, the devilish smile she first fell in love with on his face?

their wedding day, when stuart begged her to call it off, begged for her to come back to the uk to their family?

when did she realise the young boy she fell in love with was the worst human being she could have ever had the misfortune of meeting

wait if mary was 38 when she died, and neil was 16, that makes her 22 when neil was born

that however brings up the question, how old was nathan?

fascinating. he's a big rude criminal. he's cunty. he's got no social skills. his hands are bloody. pops in, pops out, kaboom. mad respect. so fun to play with his doll. i be putting him in situations and flushing him down the loo. i want to make him cry. i want to break his heart. i want him to fuck. i want him to say fuck. get it, serve it, mister bombastic.

My unpopular opinion about this character

uh... i don't think i got one? maybe a a niche-ish headcanon: i think Stuart contains much more tension than he lets on. i think it pains him to have Neil in the situation he's in, to have lost Mary, to have to keep on protecting Neil, but i think he wasn't raised in a family/system that allowed for these kind of emotions (duh). by that i mean that he got along just fine with what he had to do to get the job done, he didn't mind the dirty hands and violence so much, but when he was confronted with Mary killed that way and Neil almost dying too, i think he had a lot of internal conflict. who must he be more loyal to? the empire? or family? both are full of blood. all this to say, i think he struggles a lot internally, but has not learned to show it and does not have an outlet, so everything he says or does comes out cold, because that's what he's been all his life. he's only beginning to thaw.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon

want him to pull a heist again, maybe. or save the day/Jean in extremis. i have to say, i'm quite satisfied with daydreaming about my mafia husbands/Stichi wip + the one from @constelationprize xx

also for the WIP game I’d love to hear about warning signs, snippet of future chapters, your thoughts, random Mary or Nathan or Stuart headcanons, literally anything

okay so this one took me a while to write because this au is so...idk its a very personal and prickly little au and i adore it but i also have no idea how to talk about it lmao. but heres some rambly rambles for you.

basically there were two main things which drove me to want to write this one

i wanted to write nathan and mary being horrible melodramatic toxic as hell and, as a result, extremely hot. if nobody leaves this fic without feeling a little horny about either/both of them, i will be a sad, sad man

i want the hatfords to fucking suck

point one is self explanatory (evil people hot) but point two is this weird zone where like. i understand why the hatfords usually are written as either alright people or pretty mellow for a crime family in fic. its useful to build aus, theres really nothing in canon about them, its objectively completely consistent with canon, and i dont ever want to step on someones fun au of the hatfords. do whatever you like.

but at some incomprehensible point in the last seven (?) years ive been in this fandom, i developed a weird vendetta against stuart hatford.

let me be extremely clear; i can argue my case. i can give you evidence to explain why stuart should be a shitty, horrible person. but thats...mostly just because im good at arguing, honestly. i dont actually expect people to suddenly start writing stuart as a shitty person just because i got the fuck-this-guy brainworm.

but thats a little bit of why im writing this fic. every once in a while i see aus or interpretations that sort of implicitly assume that mary was paranoid and kind of stupid for not sticking with the hatfords, or that staying with the hatfords would have been a better childhood for neil/happy ending for mary. so this is my exploration of what if not that. what if the hatfords also sucked? what if mary went from one situation, that was shitty in one particular way, to a new shitty situation, which was shitty in a different but adjacent way? what if when she ran away it really was a choice between three terrible options (nathan, stuart or going on the run)? what if she had a hand in building that choice? could it have been different if she had acted otherwise? or was she doomed from the start?

and what if, along the way, i got to write about two people who flirted by escalating and extremely hilarious assassination attempts?

Yknow, I always found the "Why don't you like girls?" "Because they're soft" "some of the strongest people I know are women" Scene funny af because Neil literally just asked Nicky "why r u gay?" So of course the answer would be something... like that? You know Nicky says they're soft and explains that they have so many curves and stuff and he likes his masculine Erik that he can hold onto etc etc,

But Neil is having his war flashbacks about his mom and Dan and Allison and Renee and he's like "women are strong" 🎵THIS IS MODERN FEMINISM TALKING ~🎵

And Nicky is like um I meant their bodies? Like literally?

And it just hit me, how Neil didn't even consider that, because of his demisexuality

He asks a gay man why he's gay and when he says why he doesn't like girls Neil is thinking of all their great accomplishments and strong characters, he doesn't think anything about their appearances, they're beautiful/hot etc he thinks about how Allison was ready to play while she was still grieving and his mom on the run all those years and I don't remember what he thought of Dan and Renee cause it's 4am but he thought something

Like he literally asked why are you gay but didn't even thought the answer would be connected to bodies and attraction he thought Nicky was talking about, like personalities and stuff

one of my fondest hc is that i truly truly believe that the hatfords are either scottish or northern english. and a much smaller gang than the moriyamas/wesninskis in general. it just makes more sense to me.

i like to think that the hatfords are more working class,not in wealth but culturally, and that mary wanted more than that. she grew up wanting to be amongst higher society, to be rich and boast about it too. and when she got the opportunity to leave with a man who offered that lifestyle, the glamour and shimmer and appeal of old dirty money, she jumped at it. she left her family behind, thinking she could do better than them. and she told them that too. she thought she’d be more than she was with her family, be an equal to nathan in his business and at home.

and she was, until she got pregnant. and then suddenly she was a mother, instead of a person. the one who caused a problem by getting pregnant. now nathan had something he had to deal with, to get rid of so he could continue his work with the moryiamas. the cruelty she’d been exempt from till this point was suddenly turned on her and her son. Neil became the only thing she had. and she had to risk everything for him.

and once it all went south, the shame and the guilt, and the belief that the hatfords couldnt deal with problems this big, ate away at her until she was on an island of two. her and neil. and while she loved him, she really loved him, neil had torn her away from the life she had made for herself. from the position she deserved to have, among the prestige and wealth. so she resented him.

what she didn’t know, was that for her, her family would’ve made themselves bigger. for neil, they increased their base and standings in uk and made themselves important to the moriyamas. they extended business overseas. they would’ve fought for her had she asked.
