sukugo is a crack ship TO YOU. to me it's a perfectly legitimate ship, held back within the canon universe principally due to adherence to classic genre structures and not by lack of character compatibility
#sukugo#not to be a crack ship definition purist. but it doesnt qualify as a crack ship if the characters are totally compatible#and if a major reason that the ship is not canon is just because the characters aren't main characters and thus not the focus of the story#what i mean is that jjk has a pretty normal structure for a coming of age martial arts story#it has the young protagonist who is the focus of the story#who has a wise teacher who is killed by the villain to provide the protagonist with more motivation to defeat the villain#gojo and sukuna were both doomed by the narrative in that the narrative followed this classic structure. so long as yuji is the protagonist#and main character then gojo needs to die to allow him growth and focus#and sukuna needs to be defeated by yuji#sukuna and gojo's relationship could only develop to a limited extent within their fight because its only setting the stage for the final#fight between yuji and sukuna#BUT THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY MANY EXCHANGES BETWEEN GOJO AND SUKUNA THAT DEMONSTRATE THAT THEY ARE COMPATIBLE AS A SHIP IF THEY HAD#TIME AND SPACE TO DEVELOP THE STORY IN THAT DIRECTION#“teacher and villain set up to be on opposing sides but finding understanding and an equal and love in each other” is totally legit dynamic#thats the premise of tian ya ke/word of honor#what im saying is that sukugo are very compatible as a ship#but to have a ship like sukugo be believable in canon. their relationship needs to be given time to develop#more time than jjk is able to give it within its structure without more genre subversion and without them being main characters#jjk

The thing about Ranma ½ is that is not as subversive and critical as people expect it to be, but it is smarter and more self-aware that people give it credit for
#ranma 1/2#ranma#i mean having the tomby who hates men and the men who turns into a girl as the main couple is very much intentional#or its how its a martial arts parody aka a gnere that used to be mostly male oriented but then again the title character turns into a girl#and all the game with genre expectations with the rest of the cast#but is still a sitcom romantic comedy

murim genre but it’s some girl who isn’t even going to be learning martial arts or anything she’s just landed in another woman’s body (???) and is inexplicably so powerful that no one can get to her
#the men are all indignant about it too because it has the typical murim genre traits#don’t even make her ‘pretty’ with the white skin why not make her ethnic#since the genre characters love that kind of thing#this random street rat woman has spiritual prowess unrivalled by any other in the surrounding nations#she refuses to learn to fight and doesn’t want to follow a martial art type because ??? why should she#this has gone to her head btw#put this random into the body of someone who was working in a brothel for kicks#the martial artists are gonna be so so angry

Alright fans of The Blood of Youth - let’s have a sparring match!
Please name your weapon and attack art (sword art if it’s a sword).
Hmmm I can sense your killing aura…
I draw my first hidden weapon, the Formless Script Tool… and attack with The Path Through the Heavenly Meridians… as Destiny is scripted in a language the soul can only decipher after death. You shall read your fate today as I send you to the underworld!

just watched the first two episodes of cobra kai season six and the introduction of a new superevil korean martial arts master to be the bigger-picture villain to john kreese (who is in himself the bigger-picture villain to johnny and daniel) does not bode well with cobra kai's overall track record with its asian characters
#bolo liveblogs#cobra kai#a big part of this is just cobra kai's legacy as part of a 1980s martial arts movie franchise a genre where orientalism is the norm#but like. cobra kai introduced kyler as a sort of new-gen johnny#and then proceeded to give him none of johnny's development (though that scene where daniel does a microaggression at him was great)#and now there's kim da-eun who in large part exists to mete out punishments to cobra kai's female students#that would be considered too extreme to depict if a man was doing it. which is its own huge interesting thing!#and she's not developed either. just a scary asian woman without the narrative focus given to the white characters#(many of them associated with actual military colonization of asian countries)#who are meant to be at least somewhat sympathetic no matter how bad they are.#idk. I don't like it

Honestly there's certain franchises that go beyond the traditional genre classifications and go on instead to form part of their own category called Autism. Things such as FNAF and UT/DR fall in this category. There's many more cases although many merely fall within personal categorization, and are valid only to certain extreme.
#luly talks#saying this bc i was thinking of my latest interests#and i was like damn deltarune really sticks out like a sore thumb doesn't it?#but then i realized FNAF goes beyond the traditional horror. no one watches FNAF to be scared. they do for tism motives#this doesn't apply to other things like Saw because the public still recognizes them as Scary Movies. same w THC#UT and FNAF are also really close timeline wise tbh#you'd say nostalgia not autism but no these are brand new products w little attachments to the nostalgic ones#Baki is in a tricky spot to classify because the whole point of this was to divide between autism VS actual genre (that I'm autistic about)#but baki there's certain point where i watch it less bc im a martial arts fan and more bc i missed these ppl.#though i guess that's what nostalgia is about

genuinely the more i deal with sunrise the more i feel in my heart that one scanlation team’s note that’s like “we’re sorry for the delay but our translator is reading up on shinto texts to better translate the upcoming chapter”. every time i try and put pen to paper i realise i need to know more and as a consequence nothing gets written.
#finished my reading on gender and sexuality#but now i’m doing reading on wuxia genre development#and then i have reading on kazakh history and culture to do#and THEN. i have to do research and reading on historical martial arts and sword usage#and then i need to research yuan and ming metallurgy#and then i need to research middle chinese linguistics and seal script#at this point it is less me creating this verse#and more this verse creating ME#c.txt

Things I learned after stretching out my special interest to related topics in order to expand my scope of interest:
There is a lot of stuff in the world.
A lot of stuff in the world is connected to a lot of other stuff in the world.
Attempting to squeeze it all in your head will make you very dizzy.
#tabby says something#autism#actually autistic#like seriously#started out with 'how female characters are written in action genre animation'#and then it was like#i now need to learn everything about animation and female character led stories and feminist lit theory and the other magical girl genres#and martial arts and weaponry and witchcraft and the toy industry#and all these interests then branch off into other interests and it is all fueled by the girls in my soul!

Some of y'all really need to watch less shonen and more well...anything else.
so like. obviously it's an immensely tragic route to take but sometimes it's just so satisfying for a story to go "there's no happy ending this time. resistance is futile in this scenario. the 'good guys' can't win. this is a pointless last stand. so for their final act, our beloved characters are going to rock the antagonist's shit so fucking hard it makes you stare at a wall struggling to process what just happened and how you feel about it for hours afterwards."
#i could name several martial arts movies that end like this#y'all can find all of these stories if you just look for fice minutes#stop watching stuff geared toward people under 15#and watch The Raid#or Rise of Legend#or True Legend#maybe Hero#fuck even bodyguards and assassins and that was based off a true story!#all im saying is: its a genre where its not about good and evil persay but just how hard you fight for what you want.

Notes:
There is no customization of the main character in the game, but the player may choose one of three unique female characters to play as. Each character starts with a different fighting style, but the player may equip other fighting styles freely as the game progresses while still maintaining their chosen appearance.
The female player character, known as the Spirit Monk, has two romance options available to her: The mysterious female masked assassin Silk Fox, and the male Sky, a charming rogue who mourns his dead wife and child.
The game favours the female love interests, and it is common to accidentally romance Silk Fox when attempting to romance Sky, as platonic-seeming dialogue with Silk Fox may be read as romantic by the game. Taking care not to be too friendly with Silk Fox is advised if the player wants to romance Sky.
There are multiple endings for the game, and the love interests will become good or evil depending on the path the player takes.
The game is set in a fantasy Asian culture that largely takes cues from ancient China, but also invents many details, and mashes aspects from elsewhere in Asia together in a way that may come across as insensitive to modern players. However, the game was an early landmark for Asian and LGBT representation in video games, and it was considered quite progressive for the time period.

Polite Society (2023, UK)
Director & Writer: Nida Manzoor
Mini-review:
I could tell Nida Manzoor was a maverick from watching We Are Lady Parts, and this movie confirmed it once again. Much like that show, Polite Society is unpredictable, surprising and entirely fun. There's nothing else like it out there, and that on its own is already an achievement. It took me a moment to get used to the over-the-top, campy tone of the film, but from there on I had an absolute blast. The cast goes all in, and their obvious delight is a big part of what makes the experience so enjoyable. I don't really know what else to say, cause it's better to go into this movie knowing nothing about it, and I don't wanna risk spoiling anything. The point is: watch this!
