Spy x Family volume 14: bonus chapter and official timeline translation

Volume 14 was just released and it included a ton of great extras, including an extra bonus chapter and a timeline of events! Firstly, here's my translation of the 4Koma (4 panel) bonus chapter!

Lol at Anya telling Yuri to go to work 😂 I also love how Anya has a teacup once Yor is home ❤️

Next, much to everyone's surprise, Endo provided an official timeline...sort of. It doesn't have specific years and a lot of information is redacted, but it's something! Sorry for the sloppy editing, I pasted an excel sheet over the original text since that was much easier. Also, the letters in the "Character Age" column refer to the first letter of the character ("L" for Loid for example).

Did I forget who "Coco" was or was that never actually in the manga?

Even though much of the timeline is redacted, it does confirm a few things, like how old Henry and Martha were during some past events, and in the present, as well as Loid's age when he joined the army. I also find it interesting that Anya is included even though this timeline is about the wars...was the facility she was at involved with the war somehow? 👀 Were the experiments on her related? But it also includes Franky's breakups, so who knows, lol.

Next, a bonus illustration of Damian picking his outfit for the gala, just like Jeeves mentioned in the latest chapter. Ewen is telling him to pick black since it looks more more cool and mature. But Endo says that the overlapping patterns make it hard to see, so he should pick white. Obviously being the creator, whatever Endo says goes 😅

Day 14: Favorite Couple?

Hmm, I guess it's more like my favorite couples, plural, because it's a tie between Twiyor, Damianya and Yurikuro.

I don't know why, but it seems like there's something like an unofficial 'rule' about how to become a good couple in Spy x Family, that the girls should have ever kick, punch, or slap the boys, and these three couples already fulfil the 'requirement' here, lol.😂

Honorable mention for Domilla, Frankiona, Bewen and Hendertha, because I ship them even though they haven't fulfilled the requirement yet.

Day 7: Best moment for you?

I had to give this question some real thought, mostly because when asked something like this my brain tends to flatten out an entire series so nothing stands out(even if it usually would). So now that my ADHD addled brain is cooperating, I actually want to discuss two moments. I don't even know if I think of them as the best but they stood out as meaningful and relevant. To start, Twilight's first meeting with Franky.

By this point, [redacted] alias Roland Spoofy has lost everything. And seing a chance to get back at the so called enemy that robbed him of all he loved, he enlists the military, using the once whimsy cunning he posseses for the sake of death and destruction. The perfect miliary machine, really; dehumanizing those amongst the enemy lines in front of him, another target to shoot each one of them. And then he meets Franky. It's very easy to see how disarming it was for [redacted] to see an unarmed, terrified twerp begging to not die before he could get laid. Even before he could process it, this was a good reminder that the people on the opposing army were as human as him.

But then, Franky shares what he knows and thinks about the war and how humans are easily influenced to think in destructive terms about their peers without evidence. Much as the ire starts getting the better of [redacted], he really has no counterargument here. In a very digestible example, the manga unpacks the nature of propaganda, and the following events unravel what a radicalized soldier thinks when showing him the error of his way of thinking beat by beat.

The second moment is the conclusion to Martha's backstory.

Much as the marriage between Henry and Lucia that robbed Martha of her youthful love was in many ways a systemic imposition, the manga intelligently chooses to not villanize Lucia, for she was pressured by the system herself. More importantly, however, are the very take aways Martha has from these soul crushing experiences.

The first is as simple as it gets. As long as you live, there's something to strive for. Specially in times where hopelessness seems to be the only option, it's important to remember this. Even if it doesn't take the shape we dreamed of, as long as you breathe, there's something ahead to look for.

The second is tied to another one I'll mention down the line, but the acceptance of how we never have the full picture is the most mature takeaway anyone could have from their personal disgrace. You will never know everything, so instead of choosing to carve your heels on the ground and claim absolute certainty, to be open to learn is not only the intelligent and wise, but even compassionate thing to do.

It's a little strange when I think about it, but I guess I find profoundly powerful and inspiring how much this manga, that people enjoy for the humor and cozy stories, takes the chance to encourage humility, the search for truth and critical thinking. Things we sorely need more than ever.

Adams, Franklin, and Jefferson are such an iconic trio, but what would happen if they were on a sidewalk? I'm going to write their sidewalk 2 and 1 dynamics.

First dynamic: Adams and Franklin together, Jefferson alone and quiet in back (this is the default since Tom is NOT a talker).

Adams and Franklin: Bantering or bickering. Their conversation can flip from one to the other like a coin.

Jefferson: Thinking about hot sex with Martha and zoning out from the world. If Franklin and Adams suddenly stop he will crash into them. But, for now he doesn't hear a word they are saying.

Second dynamic: Jefferson and Franklin together, Adams alone but in front, leading the bunch.

Jefferson and Franklin: Happily talking about nerd stuff. Maybe swivel chairs. Adams does not care.

Adams: Marching along in front. He says something snarky every now and then to the others for lagging behind or them telling a stupid joke. He is secretly fantasizing about escaping their company to return to Abigail.

Third dynamic: Adams and Jefferson in front, Franklin is in back listening and giggling.

Adams and Jefferson: Having a cordial and calm conversation with so many "accidental" double entendres.

Franklin: If only he had a recording device he would be using it. He can't stop laughing at the others and Adams is telling him to shut up. He sings Increase and Multiply (Doozy Doozy Lamb) but gay.

I don't know why I made this. I am at work and should be focusing. This is all just a joke btw.

Amidst the era of conflict

Shedding a light on the physical and mental strain that came with constant battles, Martha's definition had mainly centred on the unrest of her era that crushed her dreams as well as being one of the contributors to her immense heartbreak.

In the wake of cold war

Contrasting the visible physical battles of the past, Franky's point of view reveals a different struggle that only takes place underneath the shadows. Thus, his definition had been based off the constant unseen struggles of being part of the underground information chain while trying to strike a sense of normalcy in life.

Note: Echoing Yor's point in Mission 91 on the existence of mental burden among her generation alongside the pain experienced by those in the previous one, Martha and Franky's retellings proved the unchanging truth on the presence of hardships in each era, despite in a different form.

Where human nature persists on a sense of superiority over one's triumph in conquering the difficulties in their own era, dismissing the relevance of all struggles that exist in the succeeding generations simply breeds utter ignorance. And thus, the acknowledgement towards visible scars shouldn't be used to nullify those that remain unapparent to one's sight.
