A scenario where Shepard jokes with Vega, saying she's practically Garrus' wife now after she promotes him to her XO during the war, resulting in them unintentionally spending a lot more time together.

The joke goes over Vega's head, and he goes to congratulate Garrus personally. Garrus is confused, and Vega promises to keep the "secret marriage" a secret. Garrus now has to figure out how in the hell he accidentally proposed to and married a human and how is he supposed to tell his dad he missed the unplanned wedding and the ceremonial meeting of his fiancé. He was almost 30, but this was going to get him grounded for at least another 30 years or maybe even life.

Was he supposed to get his new wife a gift? Where they supposed to get matching tattoos like Turians? He could've sworn he read somewhere that humans consummated their vows the same way Turians do. Where did he go wrong dammit!?

He adores the idea of Shepard being his wife and loves knowing that she was so excited that she even told Vega about it. He just now has to figure out how he married her in the first place without her knowing he doesn't know. Because then she'll think he never wanted to marry her, and that is NOT the case. Maybe Tali will know? No way. She'd just call him a bosh'tet. Wrex will also call him a professional idiot. Liara won't judge, but he's sure she still hasn't gotten over her crush on the Commander, and he doesn't want to rub his new marriage in her face. Maybe Joker will tell him if he promises him the new fornax issue.

Garrus has had his fair share of giving his dad a pseudo aneurysm, but this one was going to send him into cardiac arrest for sure when he finds out his son married a woman the family didn't even meet. He needs a drink...after he finishes bribing Edi to scrub away everything she just heard him say out loud.

Garrus doesn't know that Vega is the galaxy's worst secret keeper, telling Shepard he's keeping the secret marriage a secret unwilling to let Shepard convince him that she's actually not married yet. She goes to see Garrus to have a good laugh about Vega's idiocy but walks into Garrus telling Edi he will use Shepard's override if she doesn't get rid of something.

Garrus is absolutely mortified and gives the cheesiest greeting to his "wife." She assumes Vega already brought the joke to Garrus but she's not overlooking him trying to be suspicious with Edi. He recovers, mentioning it was for his sesrch history for a gift he wanted to get her. He did intend to get her a gift so the phrase wasn't a complete lie...

She jokes about it and calls him her husband. Garrus, the realist he is, does not take this as a joke. She leaves him to his vices, and Garrus is now in a full-blown panic. He needs to understand what he did, and he needs to know now.

(If my brain gets any more random ideas, I'll at least finish and provide a resolution to this concept, lol. Feel free to offer your own ending)

I will tell you our story after October 7 in light of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip

I used to live a stable life in Gaza City, from home to work. Our life was full of happiness in our home in the city of Tamm. Our life turned into a nightmare in the war that changed our lives and we became without a home, living inside a tent on the street. There were no necessities of life such as water, electricity, clothing and food.

In light of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, we went through very difficult circumstances and we were displaced several times. During the displacement operations, I lost everything, I lost my home, and I lost my law office, which was my only job and source of income, which was destroyed by the Israeli bombing, which was non-stop. And my wife, who lost stability due to the cessation of her university studies while she was in the third year, and who, at the present time, had to stop studying and help me work for our life’s requirements and live a safe, happy life.

During the marriage process, my wife and I lost a stable life. We were exposed to several skin diseases due to the pollution of the place in which we live, and our psychological state became bad due to their deprivation of a happy, stable life and a life full of happiness.

I need donations for a safe exit from the Gaza Strip to safety for me and my family.

Omg do you think humans don’t vibe with the Asari as much as they do with literally every other species is because we know where we stand with everyone else?

We don't vibe with asari? I mean, I have personal beef with them bc of how they handled ME3, but besides that, the asari have been a little delightful, pretentious, but charming still. It's hard to stay mad at someone so pretty.

But you have a point, humans and turians mingle more often than humans and asari. Hell, humans and krogans seem to have much more fun. Even salarians enjoy our food and culture... but the asari are just there.

I think humanity's lack of "special" bond with asari is because...well, the asari can't exploit us in a way that matters.

LISTEN—listen okay. So, each species the asari are close with "lacks" certain things. Salarians with their imbalance 90/10 male to female ratio meaning a lot of them will never get married, Krogans inability to have kids because of the genophage, Vorcha with their limit 20y lifespan and underdeveloped society, Quarians living in poverty and requiring, expensive antibiotics, environmental suit and its maintenance costs to stay alive.

And the asari take advantage of that. Not always malicious, but they feel inclined to meddle within each species and attempt to fill the empty spaces in order to advance their own society.

Many salarians marry asari, said asari not minding since they'll outlive them.

Krogans who desperately want kids, the one thing the asari can give them.

The vorcha whom they actually enslaved and exploited for years, who couldn't defend themselves in court because the asari would just stall the case until the vorcha eventually dies, not to mention the fact they kept them illiterate and uneducated on purpose.

Swindling someone out of their money in Thessia is not a crime, there are zero laws to defend the customer, everyone is trying to scam everyone and quarians always get the short end of the stick and end up signing up for things they don't understand, drowning in debt until the asari sells them to a different company they must work for like a slave.

The asari are parasitic by nature. They find a weakness within a species and exploit it to advance their own. They're probably not aware of it, nor do it intentionally, but this is the reality of their existence.

A race that requires a different species to reproduce will always only prosper on the suffering of others. A Cuckoo is very beautiful, but it can't build its own nest, so it lays eggs in other birds' nest and tricks them into raising its own. A brood parasite. As the chick hatches, it will push the other eggs off of the nest, ensuring it's the only one that remains.

They can dress up their society as much as they like, swear by the goddess, adorn all the titles of justicar and else. Speak with eloquence and act with grace. They still are opportunistic parasites at their core.

Humans are self-fulfilling, everything the asari can offer us—both the good and the bad—we already have ourselves. Even our biotics research advancement reaches a stage in ME3 where the asari asks to have a look at it.

We like the asari, but we don't need them.

Not to mention the whole brainwashing thing to make themselves seem the most appealing to your brain, tricking you into viewing them as very similar to your species—yeah we glossed over that we too quickly.

It could also just be the Mass Effect storywriters keeping them a blank page on purpose, all the stuff about the asari intricate world, brutal capitalist society, inner conflict, civil wars as several groups demand isolation from the rest of the aliens, the fact they can easily birth bloodthirsty demon like biotics, or the whole racism issue based on who the father is, all of that is swiftly swept under the rug fot the "hot human-lite all-women alien species."

The turians are also a species that seemingly doesn't lack anything.

Sure, they can be a little uptight and too military centred, but they seem uh happy with their mandatory bootcamps for kids?

So them and the asari don't mingle much, they are on good terms but asari don't often go for turians, and it's true the other way around as well.

You see more human/turian couples than asari/turian ones in Mass Effect.

Imagine Mass Effect AU where Shepard and Garrus are on the citadel at the same time before ME1. Shepard and her friends are talking about aliens and sex, and someone says: I hear Turians are really good. So it's rapidbly becoming a dirty joke around the table of drunk soldiers.

Then Garrus and his cop buddies show up to the bar, and one of them overhears these drunk humans talking about sex and aliens. It's good humour, so the guy joins in joking about it. Then suddenly it's the two groups getting drunk and making stupid jokes. Someone googles things, another makes jokes and then suddenly Garrus is inviting Shepard to his apartment.

Both can say curiosity made them 'die a little' but oh satisfaction brought them back.

More notes: This could be the start of a larger AU where Garrus and Shepard are a couple before the series. Hell, having them be a married couple with a kid before it would be so much fun.

I absolutely adore your ideas for turian culture. The shawls, the interesting word choices correlating with Roman/Latin words (like zuccha, amar, saccha). My absolute favorite thing though is the ties they have with the sky and stars. Garrus' curses (empty night, blackest night) especially are some of my favorite little elements in the universe you write for them. Where did you come up with these awesome ideas? I'm just so invested in the culture you created for my favorite space cats!

Hello Anon! Sorry this took so long to answer, I got absolutely giddy when I read it!

Well the whole Latin thing is taken both from canon (they're based on the Roman empire) and fanon. I know others have used Latin words and Roman culture to develop turian culture, and I liked it so I ran with it. A lot of the words I made up are bastardized latin words, lol. Saccha, mela, and zuccarum (zucca for short) are taken from the Latin words for sugar, honey, and ... sugar again, I think, lol. Crulum is taken from cookie. I kind of just look up the latin words for things and throw some letters around until I'm happy with the mouth feel of it. Other words I just plain make up, like lambas, which is a dish Val makes for the family. I want all turian words to sound like a rich, rolling, rumbly language as much as possible. For Avinelin, a Garrus/Nihlus one shot, I wanted the turian language Nihlus teaches Garrus to sound more like Spanish, because I think it's an incredibly sexy language. Basically, I want turians to sound hot I guess! I think a lot of people like to write turians as cold and ultra-militaristic, and go as far as to say they don't show physical affection easily (which is a valid take that I fully support!). But, I like to show the opposite of that -- that yes their culture is regimented and bureaucratic, but there's still warmth within them. Maybe expressing that warmth within them is even more important, considering their strict social guidelines.

I think that's also why I like to explore the importance of celestial themes with them as well. It shows that they once were religious, just like many species, and that shaped their language and how they cope with life. I know others play with curses being star based as well, so I didn't invent that, I just have fun playing with it. I will say that so far my favorite bit of star theme that I've come up with though, is Garrus seeing Jane's freckles as stars in a night sky, and that when he was a boy he'd look up at the night sky for comfort and solace. I don't get gushy over things I write often, but that moment in The Quarian where he makes that connection gets me! And I will absolutely be playing with that as Garrus and Jane reveal their feelings and explore their relationship in The Boy. One day he'll tell Jane that her freckles are like stars and she'll just melt 🥺 (I've already written the scene 😁)

OH, and the shawls...in the sequel to The Boy (working title is The Missing -- I hate my titles btw, but I feel stuck to the theme now, lol) There's going to be a murder based on the Jeffrey McDonald murders (a military doctor accused "hippies" of killing his family) and I wanted turians to have some sort of cultural appearance that xenophobic humans judged, but was based on something loving, so I thought maybe turians wear shawls while they marry, then i daydreamed about Jane wearing a shawl when her and Garrus get married, then when I was writing about a winter turian holiday (Anivia Vocan) I thought it would be cool if turians wear shawls for all important occasions. Boom, turians have special shawls. Okay, I feel like I've blabbered on enough. Bless anyone who read through this all. TLDR is that I have no plan and don't even keep track of the stuff I write. It all just bubbles up while I'm daydreaming about Jane and Garrus and I include what I remember.

Oh wow, you can't just ask the girl with a thousand OCs to describe their OCs. I will go on forever and ever and ever. So in the spirit of trying to force myself to get back to work on PtK, I am going to answer for the girls who have shown up in the story so far!

How would you describe your OC's personality/aesthetic?

Lou: Lou is vivacious, she's bubbly but a lot of the bubbly comes out when she's burying the sadness she has even deeper. She's very confident, and doesn't know a whole lot of shame.

She loves tight clothes with rich colors. Though she frequently slinks around in her blue and gray flex armor suit, especially when she's on Omega because a person like her gets into too much trouble not to have at least the suggestion of armor on her body.

Nilea: Nilea can be stiff mannered and sometimes brash. She has a hard time connecting to people, feeling always a bit like she's just on the outside. But once she does feel like she's friends with you, she's ride or die even if she's quite certain your plans are going to get her killed. She's very neat. She's also prone to bouts of depression where she doesn't take care of herself despite how generally regimented she lives her life.

Nilea cares more about utility than style. Her most recent armor (heavy) was red, but she's not married to the color by any means. And for casual wear she's just wearing an easy and comfortable shirt and whatever the turian equivalent of cargo pants is. It's never a bad idea to have lots of pockets.

Yaeno: Yaeno is the type who can command a room without trying and without coming off as arrogant. She's charismatic and very good at people. She cares deeply about what she does for a living (rescuing people from pirates, slavers and mercenaries when authorities won't get involved). She makes fast friends when she deems those people worth her time of course.

Yaeno, being a quarian, wears an envirosuit. She wears good deep purples and oranges with white embroidered highlights and patterns. Sometimes she even ventures to wear a clear faceplate, but not always. She thinks it's nice occasionally to leave people guessing about what's really going on with her facial expressions.

What's your favorite thing about them?

Lou: She's clever and very adaptable. She makes a very unlikely sort of bounty hunter and that's because instead of brute force she plays to her own strengths.

Nilea: Her principles. She has a set of principles that she feels so strongly about that she even blew up her entire life about. Also.... tall alien woman with a gun...

Yaeno: Her determination. I don't necessarily want to call it unshakable confidence, though confidence plays a role. She's sure enough of herself and her goals to look at the impossible and terrifying odds and chuckle at them.

Fun facts about their creation!

Firstly, this story all started because I had an idea for a homebrew tabletop game I'm still trying to figure out how to make rules for.

Lou: Lou started because I was tired of people with southern accents being the stupid one in a group and also not being represented like hardly at all in sci-fi media. Also, I dumped all of my bipolar manic episode impulses into her.

Nilea: Her name was originally going to be Ione.

Yaeno: Was originally just going to be in the game as an art for character creation pages and possibly as a named NPC but then this whole venture turned into a real story in my brain that I needed to write very badly.
