I absolutely adore your ideas for turian culture. The shawls, the interesting word choices correlating with Roman/Latin words (like zuccha, amar, saccha). My absolute favorite thing though is the ties they have with the sky and stars. Garrus' curses (empty night, blackest night) especially are some of my favorite little elements in the universe you write for them. Where did you come up with these awesome ideas? I'm just so invested in the culture you created for my favorite space cats!

Hello Anon! Sorry this took so long to answer, I got absolutely giddy when I read it!

Well the whole Latin thing is taken both from canon (they're based on the Roman empire) and fanon. I know others have used Latin words and Roman culture to develop turian culture, and I liked it so I ran with it. A lot of the words I made up are bastardized latin words, lol. Saccha, mela, and zuccarum (zucca for short) are taken from the Latin words for sugar, honey, and ... sugar again, I think, lol. Crulum is taken from cookie. I kind of just look up the latin words for things and throw some letters around until I'm happy with the mouth feel of it. Other words I just plain make up, like lambas, which is a dish Val makes for the family. I want all turian words to sound like a rich, rolling, rumbly language as much as possible. For Avinelin, a Garrus/Nihlus one shot, I wanted the turian language Nihlus teaches Garrus to sound more like Spanish, because I think it's an incredibly sexy language. Basically, I want turians to sound hot I guess! I think a lot of people like to write turians as cold and ultra-militaristic, and go as far as to say they don't show physical affection easily (which is a valid take that I fully support!). But, I like to show the opposite of that -- that yes their culture is regimented and bureaucratic, but there's still warmth within them. Maybe expressing that warmth within them is even more important, considering their strict social guidelines.

I think that's also why I like to explore the importance of celestial themes with them as well. It shows that they once were religious, just like many species, and that shaped their language and how they cope with life. I know others play with curses being star based as well, so I didn't invent that, I just have fun playing with it. I will say that so far my favorite bit of star theme that I've come up with though, is Garrus seeing Jane's freckles as stars in a night sky, and that when he was a boy he'd look up at the night sky for comfort and solace. I don't get gushy over things I write often, but that moment in The Quarian where he makes that connection gets me! And I will absolutely be playing with that as Garrus and Jane reveal their feelings and explore their relationship in The Boy. One day he'll tell Jane that her freckles are like stars and she'll just melt 🥺 (I've already written the scene 😁)

OH, and the shawls...in the sequel to The Boy (working title is The Missing -- I hate my titles btw, but I feel stuck to the theme now, lol) There's going to be a murder based on the Jeffrey McDonald murders (a military doctor accused "hippies" of killing his family) and I wanted turians to have some sort of cultural appearance that xenophobic humans judged, but was based on something loving, so I thought maybe turians wear shawls while they marry, then i daydreamed about Jane wearing a shawl when her and Garrus get married, then when I was writing about a winter turian holiday (Anivia Vocan) I thought it would be cool if turians wear shawls for all important occasions. Boom, turians have special shawls. Okay, I feel like I've blabbered on enough. Bless anyone who read through this all. TLDR is that I have no plan and don't even keep track of the stuff I write. It all just bubbles up while I'm daydreaming about Jane and Garrus and I include what I remember.

Nihlus pauses, his subvocals even falling quiet for a moment as he studies the younger turian, before a quiet chirp of affection escapes him as his gaze softens. Shaking his head, he leans in, trailing his tongue along the sensitive edge of one of Garrus's mandibles.

"I feel plenty good watching you come apart for me," he notes, a low lustful growl underlining his words at just the thought. "Now, if it's something you want me to do for you?" There's a noticeable teasing undertone to his growled words as he offers, "I might be persuaded to allow it..."

Working Out The Kinks

Summary: During a heated sparring match, Shepard invites Garrus and Nihlus up to her cabin for a more private work-out. Rating: Explicit Pairing: f!Shepard/Garrus/Nihlus Word Count: 5274

Preview: “I don't mind the recoil on the M-29 so much, I’d only ever use it at mid-range anyway.” Shepard shrugs as she leads them out of the shuttle bay, wiping the sweat from her flushed face with the end of the towel that hangs around her neck. 

Garrus follows close on her heels, Nihlus traipsing behind them both in a stunned sort of silence. He realises his mouth is hanging open and he closes it with an audible snap, his mandibles flaring with confusion at the mundane nature of the conversation passing between Shepard and Garrus. How can they be so nonchalant after what was just proposed during their bout?

Why is he still following along behind them, dazed and bewildered? Moving as though his legs have a mind of their own.

“What bothers me is the reload. It feels so…” Shepard rapidly rubs her thumb against the pads of her fingers in an unfamiliar gesture, “Sticky?”

“Yeah…” Garrus drawls, his face lighting up with effusive agreement as they file into the elevator. “The Widow is very smooth by comparison.”

Nihlus eyes the control panel, knowing that he has arrived at the critical moment of choice. He could back out of the elevator now, no hard feelings, no change in the dynamic between them, or…

Nihlus presses a talon to the button for Shepard’s cabin.

Shepard is struggling to undo the wraps on her hands and without prompting, Garrus reaches over to help her. 

“Also, I prefer a heftier rifle. I wanna feel the force of it against my shoulder. Rattling in my teeth, y’know?” Shepard adds as Garrus makes quick work of the fastening.

Nihlus watches the easy, casual intimacy between them, wondering how it is that he’d never noticed it before. Never noticed that it was something more than the closeness of old comrades-in-arms. 

“Makes me feel connected. Grounded or something. Is that weird?”

“Nah, I totally get it.” Garrus deftly unwinds the protectives wraps and Shepard bundles them up as they reach her cabin, the doors opening with an ominous hiss.

“Make yourselves at home,” Shepard invites them in. The welcome is for his benefit he believes, given the way Garrus swaggers into her quarter’s like he owns the place.

Two pairs of green eyes turn towards Garrus, and for a moment, both human and turian manage nearly the same expression as a single brow is raised high at the younger turian's demand. Though there's notably far more amusement on Nihlus's part, his mandibles fluttering with barely restrained laughter as he knows their human is going to try to resist such an order, despite her not having slept in nearly 72 hours that's he's noticed so far.

Isabela's emerald green gaze narrows sharply as she catches the amused rumble of agreement in Nihlus's subvocals, turning to glare at him briefly before focusing once more on Garrus, clearly set on being stubbornly defiant. "I'm fine," she insists sharply, pointedly ignoring Nihlus's scoff to the contrary. "It's not like engine maintenance can be left half-finished, dammit."

Nevermind that she has a full team in Engineering, or that Tali is back on board and more than capable to handle most anything that might come up in Izzy's absence. But after the destruction of the original Normandy in the midst of a space battle, she's all the more determined to keep things in optimal condition, even if it means spending days on end to rebalance the systems after the latest upgrade.

Starting to stand from the table, she nearly stumbles when Nihlus swiftly grabs the back of her envirosuit, effectively halting her progress before she can run back off to Engineering to disappear into the maintenance shafts.

"Isabela," is Nihlus's only verbal warning, the look in his eyes making it clear that he's on board with Garrus's order, and that he knows her well enough to stop her from getting away from either of them before she can hide to lose herself in her work.

Frowning at them both, she switches to their shared tongue as opposed to the Galactic Standard that she usually uses around the mixed species crew. "Don't 'Isabela' me, Nihlus. Spirits, I'm not some pup that needs to be looked after."

There's a notably haunted look in her eyes as she looks away then, even as she lets the older turian tug her back into her seat. She's silent for a long moment, seemingly working through her own thoughts before hesitatingly admitting, "I can't sleep because of the nightmares, alright? I didn't want them to wake either of you, and I can't sleep in the bed alone, so..."
