Which Classic Novel Should You Read Based on Your Fave Snape Pairing

Snily - Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë (1847). Let's see, a low class and abused, brooding Byronic leading man? Check. Madly in love with a woman who ends up marrying a snobbish rich man who looks down on our hero? Check. Obsessed with her even decades after her death? Check, check, and check. Oh, and let's not forget that the child the woman has with her husband shares her eyes. Hm, suspicious.

Snames - Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded by Samuel Richardson (1740). So, as a fellow snames fan, let's be honest with ourselves: all of our fics can be boiled down to "I can change him." We want James to be despicable, inhuman, and cruel to Severus, and then we want James to realize how disgusting he is and grovel at Severus's feet, because we are all basic bitches. So basic that one of the earliest novels in the English language is basically this. Pamela originated this trope.

Snirius - Deep Water by Patricia Highsmith (1957). Snirius fans are unafraid of dark, toxic relationships and unhappy endings, and, well, here's a book for you! Deep Water is about as toxic as you can get. It's about a man who murders his wife's lovers.

Snucius - Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw (1913). Alright, alright, so this isn't a novel, this is a play, but fans of this pairing definitely seem to be into the whole sugar daddy/"I can turn this feral street child into an elegant gentleman" kind of vibe, and this is what this play is all about. Audrey Hepburn is fantastic in the film adaptation My Fair Lady (1964).

Snupin - Bear by Marian Engle (1976). You Canadians are probably like, "What the fuck? Is my OTP a joke to you?" The answer is yes, but that's beside the point. Hear me out. The main character is an archivist who is very bad at relationships and kind of shuns society in general. Like our Snape. She ends up in the Canadian wilderness on an assignment going through a dead person's belongings. Also, this dead person kept a pet bear that our heroine now has to take care of. Our heroine begins to yearn for something wild, our pet bear is a literal bear, but also incredibly pathetic and docile just like Lupin. Anyway, the two fuck. Literally, she fucks a bear. THIS BOOK WON THE GOVERNOR GENERAL'S LITERARY AWARD. THAT'S LIKE CANADA'S PULITZER I THINK. None of you werewolf-fuckers should act shocked and dismayed by this. We all know how you really think Sirius's prank should have gone (in which instead of James rescuing Snape, Moony makes sweet sweet love to him).

Sorry, guys, no Snarry or Snamione. I don't really read those pairings so I can't give an accurate recommendation. But if you've got thoughts, add to this!

4. New (to you) fandom

I asked dear @lizzy0305 to rec me one of their stories for this prompt because we chatted a bit lately and I knew they'd written for other fandoms than HP, so I got to read "When an Angel Suffers, Even Death Weeps" and I was not prepared for how amazing this story would be! The suspense, the writing style, all the little moments of wisdom! I loved it, even though I know next to nothing about Star Trek. 🥹

9. 5+year old fic

This story... This story! I was crying so hard at the end and yet I loved every single line of it. Well, to be fair, I always love those stories the most that break my heart and make me cry. So be prepared. 😆 Anyway, it's this gem: "Second Life" by Cassandra7 and nwhiker. It's a Snack for a change and at first, I wasn't even sure if this was the right story for me. I'm a fan of their mutual hate, and the more messy and complicated it is the more I love it. Not that their relationship in this story wasn't complicated but there's no hate and yet... 🥹 Without a doubt a story I will reread at some point. A piece of art that has my heart so beautifully broken needs to be reread.

2. De-aging/kidfic

Although this is a popular trope in HP, I've actually never read a de-aging fic so far. But I'm happy to have remedied my ignorance now. ^^ "Nargles, Wrackspurts, Oh My" by LadyLanera is a sweet story that features a de-aged Severus who gets resorted into Ravenclaw and encounters Luna and both her sillynesses and earnestnesses. I'm a sucker for Luna/Severus encounters, they are always something special, and I enjoyed the ones here a lot. But not only is Severus de-aged in this fic, he's also married (not to Luna) and I enjoyed that a lot as well. ^^ Really a wonderful story.

14. Multiple authors

I could say I chose this story specifically for this challenge to read but that would be a lie. I'd have read it anyway, I just cannot resist when @frenchpresswriter is involved and @slytherinsally additionally sold me for "i don't know why i like you (but i do)". 😊 And let me tell you, it was a blast! This story is peak 'Idiots in Love' and the banter was amazing. Go read the story if you're in the mood for some light-hearted Snamione idiots to lovers. ^^

22. Fic written by someone who follows you

This story as well is one I would have read anyway but maybe it would have taken me a bit longer before I'd come around to it. Which would have been a shame because "Of Spell Burns and Black Hearts" by @lucky-daisy-writes was so much fun to read on a Friday afternoon! I had such a good time with the humour of the fic, with the curse I haven't read like that before, and with the beautiful depictions of Hermione and Severus slowly growing closer. Check it out!

I’ll write pretty much any smut, but I prefer it to be part of a wider context, hence why I don’t write a lot of one-shot smuts. The one-shots I do write are pretty freaky though 😎

No, I’d get too lost in the lore trying to explain why the crossover was happening 😂

No, I don’t see how it’d work personally, although I am big into using people as soundboards. Soul of Ice would be very different without @sevsnapes and For the Love of Books wouldn’t even exist without @snowblossomreads

doctorrose, though I’ll probably never write for them. Any form of Snape/Happiness is a-ok in my book but Snephy is obviously my favourite form of that.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I’m gonna finish them all! I promise! Eventually!!

16. What are your writing strengths?

Characters. The most common compliment I get is that people like my OCs, Abbie in particular.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I’m always conscious that my narration isn’t very descriptive. It feels very “he did this and she did that, then they did this and that.” I do try to go back and flourish it a bit but I struggle to be anything other than literal in my descriptions. eg, if I had to describe a table I’d be like, “The table was a rectangle with four legs. It was made of wood.” 😂

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

If I felt the need to do that for whatever reason I’d probably do it like, “Insert dialogue here,” she said in German.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

I DON’T THINK I’VE EVER TOLD THIS STORY ok so I was like 9 or something like that and I wrote a snamione story but my mum found out and made me stop because Hermione was like 13. So I did stop but I didn’t just ghost the story, I made a post that my mum said I couldn’t write it anymore but that Hermione finds out Snape is getting married so she gets together with Ron instead. I don’t remember much of what I actually wrote, only that it started with Hermione noticing that Snape had very sad eyes. I’m pretty sure this was before the last book came out so I clearly knew what was up!

Have you read cursed child? I recently read it on my friend's recommendation after years of avoiding it as bad fanfiction. Which, it definitely kind of is! I was, however, pleasantly surprised by Ron and Hermione in it... I can't believe this fandom doesn't talk more about how Ron chooses to die with her and how Hermione asks him to kiss her before the dementors sweep in on them. This is the stuff of dramatic fanfiction! People complain about Ron being very... movie!Ron in the play, but they're so in love I almost don't even register it. And him asking her to marry him again! God. They're so good. Why isn't Romione more popular.

i have not read the cursed child - partially this is a result of having got back into harry potter fandom during the pandemic, and therefore having missed the period when it was everywhere in 2016-ish; partially it's because having returned to the fandom after jkr went off the deep end does make me less comfortable engaging with her newer ip, even in circumstances where she doesn't get any money from it; partially it's because i don't have the backbone to be perceived as a harry potter adult while buying it from a charity shop.

which is a shame, because - as you outline here - it sounds so fucking camp, which is something right up my alley. and i do really like many of themes and tropes which emerge in it - i am, for example, a paid-up bellamort baby truther; i like the concept of scorbus; i saw an absolutely deranged post once where someone was trying to claim that cursed child proves snamione is canon, and that's nonsensical energy i respect; someone sent me a picture of a scene where harry polyjuices into voldemort and tells delphini she's not as good-looking as bellatrix once, and i screeched; i am genuinely impressed to hear that it does romione well...

we could have had it so good, but i fear it's not to be.

1.) What made you ship it?

It first occurred to me when it appeared as a background ship in crowthing's Starlight. And my only thought was "um, yes????" Then I found a Snegurochka fic with Narlily called The Lost Prophecy About the Woman in White and I was like "definitely yes."

2.) What are your favorite things about the ship?

The aesthetic, ngl. Blonde hair and red! Blue eyes (my preference) and green! Hot ladies being hot together.

Also like...two women from such different worlds. Narcissa, the pureblood, the aristocrat. Lily, the Muggleborn from Cokeworth. Slytherin and Gryffindor.

So if we think about Lily as being super feisty and fierce and independent, and Narcissa being this elegant graceful lady abiding by the status quo...and Lily sort of breaking the spell a bit. And trying to convince Narcissa to be herself and live for herself. But the Black family loyalty is strong. The idea of tradition versus progression and freedom. The things they can learn from each other. Being so charmed by each other, in spite of their differences, and in spite of how "wrong" it is.

Oh oh! Also the drama potential of Narcissa standing up to her family, or even if she doesn't and their secret is found out????

Then all the possibilities in wartime of spying and using each other for information. The infidelity once they're married to Lucius and James. Also the idea of them getting their shit together and raising Draco and Harry as brothersssss. 🥹

Idk there's so much potential and the "opposites attract" line and the "quasi enemies-to-lovers" aspect is just sooooo appealing to me!

3.) Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Probably the fact that I prefer all the questionable elements haha!

Summary: Years after Lily’s death, Severus falls in love with you, a fellow professor at Hogwarts. You understand him and heal his broken heart. You know all about his spy role and accept him for who he is. After Minerva chases Severus away from Hogwarts he needs to see you once for the last time.

It had been months since the death of Dumbledore, and since your husband got the tags of a murderer and traitor. Death-eaters invaded and took over the entire school. The once bright halls and corridors, were now cold and dark. It broke your heart to see the staff and students shoot disgusted glares at your husband. But you had to remain silent and endure all the pain. 

You and Severus have been married 8 years and it had been some of the best years of your life. You taught astronomy at Hogwarts for the past 11 years and the place was what you called home. Severus told you all about his double agent role and the task he was entrusted with by Dumbledore himself. He had to kill Albus. Knowing well enough of the consequences, he had to agree to do finish the task. And now a traitor and coward was what everyone called him. But for you, he was always the bravest person you’d ever met. 

Today was the day Harry Potter returned to Hogwarts. Your husband had just fled the great hall after a short duel with Minerva, only defending her spells. The war had officially begun. You were confused and scared at the same time. The last time there was a war, thousand all across the country died. You had no idea weather or not you or Severus were going to survive this. 

Without knowing where to go, you run outside and help the others set up protection charms, when a familiar looking bird lands on your shoulder. It was Severus’s owl. It held a letter in it’s beak and flew away as soon as you grabbed the letter. With clammy hands, you rip it open and read it.

The second you read the last word, you ran as fast as your legs could carry you heading to the village of Hogsmeade. Once you reached there, you looked around frantically for your husband. Hurriedly you searched all the streets. 

Suddenly, someone gripped your arm and dragged you into a narrow dark alley. Just as you were about to scream, your mouth was covered tightly by a cold hand. 

“It’s me dear.”

You stopped fighting the grip once you heard the soothing familiar voice. He let you go and you were staring at those familiar black pools of eyes. 

“Severus!”

You fell into his safe arms as you relished the feeling of being held by your husband.   

“It’s all right y/n. we’re safe for now.”

“I missed you.”

“I know, so did I.”

He gently stroked your hair as you closed you eyes and lost yourself in the warmth. 

“What do we do now?”

You asked taking a step back so you could look at him. 

“I need to go meet the dark lord. You need to go back to Hogwarts. Help them.”

You nodded and pressed your lips to his. He kissed you passionately and held you close. After an eternity, you broke apart.

“We need to go. I love you y/n. Always.”

“Always.”

With that you take a last look at the man you love and started walking back to Hogwarts.

Lost in your thoughts, you don’t notice the dark figure following you.  

“In a hurry you filthy mudblood?”

Said a high-pitched voice behind you. You look back and it’s the last person you wanted too see. 

“Bellatrix.”

You spat, hatred heavy in your voice. 

“What do you-”

Before you could finish, you were on the ground, squirming and whimpering, under the Cruciatus curse. Without being able to take it anymore you screamed until your throat was raw. Tears flowed down your face as the pain worsened. With a tap of the wand, the pain increased ten-fold as you screamed bloody hell. 

Severus, who was making his way to the Shrieking Shack, was pulled out of his thoughts when he heard your voice screaming. His eyes widened as he raced towards the directed from where your voice echoed.  

Once the curse stopped, the maniac witch climbed over you and pulled out her dagger. She traced your face with the tip.

“I’ve heard things about you. They say you’re beautiful. But i think not.”

She bent down to your ear and whispered. 

“Not after this.”

With that she dug the dagger on your skin above your eye brow. Dragging it down toward you cheeks. The pain was unbearable as you felt your flesh ripping. Bloody screams were torn from your throat. Your cries broke Severus’s heart as he hurried trying to locate you. 

Bellatrix’s mad cackles ceased suddenly as she looked at your now scarred face and grinned. 

“That was fun!”

You tried pushing her off but you were too weak. She raised her wand and with a wide grin, sliced your throat. This happened just as Severus found you. He saw the crazy witch slice the throat of his wife. Sprinting towards you, he shot a killing curse at Bellatrix. 

He kneeled next to you. And stared at your vandalized face in horror. He tried several healing spells on the large open wound on your neck but nothing helped. Blood oozed out and stained your robes, forming a pool beneath you. Tears rolled down your husbands cheeks as he gently pulled you into his lap trying his best not to hurt you more. 

“y/n...I am so sorry. There’s nothing I can do.”

“It’s al-right Sev. I-I love yo-you...so much.”

You slowly raised a hand and placed it on his cheek. He placed his hand on top of your much smaller one and gripped it tight. 

“It’s hi-hideous is it n-not? My face.”

His heart broke when you asked him. You were always beautiful to him, no matter what. 

“No, no my love. You are beautiful. You will always be.”

He cupped your face and looked into your eyes fondly. 

“Th-thank you Severus, f-for everything.”

“No, y/n, thank you, thank you for making my life so much better, so much brighter. I love you my dear.”

You wanted to say something but you began coughing and choking. Blood trickled down your lips. You spoke faintly though the coughs. 

“I wil b-be with y-you. Al-always.”

You watched your husband nod and sob as he bent down until your lips met. Ignoring the blood that got on his lips, he placed a gentle kiss on your lips and on your scarred forehead. 

And with that your vision blurred and faded into darkness. Severus watched as the life and light from your warm eyes faded. He cried out loudly and hugged your lifeless body. 

“Always y/n.” 

He whispered through the cries and held you closer to his heart. 

8 years ago he fell in love with you and you changed his world forever until this day where you left him in his arms.

5. Mission fic

There aren't that many mission fics posted for the HP fandom - and even fewer of them are completed or on the shorter side of things. Since my time's running out a bit I was looking for a not-too-long fic and finally settled for "Sticky Situations" by roni_mac. It's a microfic featuring Tonks and Remus and I enjoyed it very much. Made me grin and sigh in happy.

10. Crossover or fusion fic

As I mentioned earlier, I don't really have other fandoms I read fanfiction for, I'm fully committed to HP. 😆 So I had to look for a fandom for this prompt as well and in the end, I went with one I already have chosen before: Supernatural. And so I stumbled upon "Before You Die [Know This]" by ForgetThePlotBunniesPlotPangunsInstead. Never expected to ever read a John/Harry fic but I have to say I enjoyed it! Harry (or Hadrian as he calls himself here) is a bit on the rougher side, as most of the SPN characters are, but it suits him and I loved how he cared for Teddy. An entertaining read indeed!

6. OT3/Polyamory

Wasn't that easy to find a fitting story for this tag since my OT3 (Hermione/Severus/Ron) at this point has 17 stories; 3 are written by me, 4 are incomplete, 1 is falsely tagged, and with the rest, I don't really vibe. So I took a look at other Snamione threesomes and found "Accidentally On Purpose" by remarkable1. It features Hermione, Ginny, and Severus and is mostly PWP but since the women are planning to repeat this and make Severus a part of their relationship, I guess it counts. It was a hot read and I enjoyed it very much. ^^

17. Only one bed

Contrary to Severus and Hermione in this story, fate did actually arrange the right thing for me because @frenchpresswriter happened to publish exactly the kind of story I needed for my challenge. And not only that, she also gave a well-used trope a twist, something I love doing as well! "Two for the price of one" is a collaboration with @lunap999 so there's also a breathtaking and hot af art in this story you should absolutely check out! But do read the story as well, it's funny and adorable and just what I needed tonight. ^^

21. Fic from your first fandom

I was a bit contemplating this one because technically, I was a huge X-Files fan when I was younger. But I've never been part of a fandom because nobody around shared my excitement and I didn't have internet back in the day (yes, I'm that old). So I went for the first fandom I actively participated in: Buffy. And for one of my favourite ships back then: Willow/Giles. Yes, I've always had a thing for age gaps. 😂 Browsing the ship tag on AO3, I stumbled upon "Family" by glasswrks and, honestly, I think I'll need some time to recover from the cuteness of this little fic. Willow and Giles happily married? Yes, please! I loved it, brought back some memories. ^^

So... Only five more to go. I might make it after all... 😁

That ask about Lucius reminded me something a friend told me when she re-read the books: "Wow, Lucius had a huge crush on Arthur and is still satly about him getting married and never giving him a chance!" (I laughed so hard XD ) Not sure why but the scene in CoS where they fight in the library indeed gave us the vibes of Lucius being stuck in "mean to your crush/beloved" phase!

First of all, why the hell am I getting so many non-anonymous asks today? This is like the 5th one I got (tho I’m not answering all of these now, I’ll continue reading a Snamione fic and then sleep), I don’t think I’ve ever gotten this many in a single day unless I reblogged an ask game. Weird…

Anyway:

Yeah lmao, I actually always headcanoned that Lucius had a crush on Arthur. I always went 👀👀👀👀 at their interactions. And yeah, I too have always gotten the still-having-not-lost-feelings-for-that-angry-old-crush vibes (I can certainly relate, there’s always that person you’ll just never lose feelings for, no matter what 🥲🤷‍♀️) whenever I read that fight scene in CoS. Tell your friend that I’m glad there’s someone else who thinks that too!

And I love the idea of Lucius hating/being mean to Molly for that reason, perhaps he encouraged Draco to make fun of Molly because he was jealous and Draco just brushed it off as “well she’s a Weasley so whatever.” 🤣
