We waited three years to erect a markstone for Meerin.

When we finally did, we gave her all the rites we could, from painting our skin and burning an empty casket to carving her earned names and humming with the song of the Holy Woman as it was lowered into the earth.

That day was sunny, too. It felt like a slap to the face, a taunt, for Hio himself to shine upon us without answering our prayers for answers. For him to warm the air and not my soul, as I pressed a painted kiss to black wood and said what were supposed to be my final goodbyes.

My legs did not give out at the edge of her grave, like they had for Mother’s.

At the time, it felt like a blessing to be able to stay until long after everyone else had to turn away, had to leave, had to rest their weary hearts.

Now, it’s a memory that haunts me every time I visit.

Eleven years ago, the graveyards of Myshari were filled with history, with names long overshadowed and markstones weathered for centuries, steady and slow in the growth of their population.

Ten years ago, we had to gather the markstones of our predecessors nearly five centuries ahead of tradition to make space for the empty graves of the world’s mourning.

this is how that's conveyed, btw. verbatim from lorelei's POV, the chapter after we hear about "the year the sea swallowed us whole" because its deeply relevant to ivan + dakarsa's backstories

i am never going to explain what happened beyond "everyone at sea two days after Springtide 3995 died"

today's contribution to the negative space/unexplained worldbuilding of whispers is brought to you once again by the events of TMS

this time it looks like "we had to gather up the old headstones of all the graveyards and shuffle them to the back in a pile to make room for the ungodly amount of empty graves ten years back. yeah it's a normal practice that we do over time here what with how hard it is to bury anything in the hard earth but this was 500 years before schedule because of the mass death. yeah its cause the sea swallowed us whole."
