Normally, I don't like reboots much. They take something key away from the original and half the time things just don't feel right.
That said....
Holy fuck do I love the new Matlock!!!
Not gonna spoil shit, but I recently watched the first two episodes and I'm hooked.
And it's... An ingenious sort of reboot. It's not "just a genderbent Matlock", it... It has a fresh new story going on and I am just...
I'm LIVING for it.
(also may have a soft spot for grandmother's who raise their grandchildren. A bias on my part, but I just... I love it.)
(that part's not a major spoiler, it's in the promos.)

So… we’re close to square one knowing who was involved with the Wellbrexa case, the fall break starts on the Olympia and Julian cheating plot and that’s where it leaves us until after the break? I liked this episode fine, but last week’s would have worked a lot better as the one before the break. The who Julian slept with question is intriguing but not enough to be like THE last note of the pre-break episode, I think.

I called that Madeline was there to take down the company.
My early call is that Sara hid the docs on Olympia’s behalf. She’s too obsessed.
OR, it’s Elijah.

Not really seeing the point of naming the show Matlock if Kathy's character is not really a Matlock and faking the Matlock personality aka Andy Griffith....

Amanita Succubari is a fungi that is pretty toxic, in certain doses, of course. If you're down for a really bad and trippy trip, take a nibble of it, that's all it takes, just a nibble and...you know, I could go for one right now. I wonder if one of the many protection spells that guard my being would prevent it from melting my mind too much...
The plan was to gather a few, stuff em in my bag, and wander around Windenburg with the intention of picking up whatever else there is to pick up. Herbs, rocks, fungi, just whatever?
This is all part of my morning routine which was part of my dream of being the world's best gatherer. Okay, yeah, that's not my dream. I really don't have one outside of making it to the next day I suppose and hoping tomorrow is better than today.
Thing's are not that bad but...
Let's not get into my situation right now, it's too personal, it's too much of a sob story for you all to even care about? Maybe it's too cliche? Is that how you use that word? Maybe it's just a little boring and yes, even more boring than watching me chip away at rocks hoping to find gold.
Spoiler alert. I don't. I'm the exact opposite of lucky.
I guess I'm not too unlucky because after all, I'm alive. That does count for something, especially with the kind of life I've had to live. Yeah, again, let's not get into that. The important thing is I make it back home and thankfully I avoid all the nosy neighbors who enjoy watching me go about my morning routine for whatever reason.
Collecting gems and making jewelry is the only way I know how to make simoleons, for now, or rather it is the most comfy way to do it. I'm sure I could find a regular nine to five but honestly I don't think I can handle a mundane job so for now, until I need more simoleons or something, this will be the source of my income.
I'm a complete noob at it and most of what I create is actually very bad but I do have faith that in time I'll improve.
You know what? I'm just now realizing that you all don't even know who I am? After all this time I've yet to introduce myself so ummm, here I go.
Welcome to the life of Gracelyn Matlock, yes, Matlock. That surname might sound familiar to you, it might not, I hope not, because I tell you the amount of trouble I've found from simply telling people that I'm a Matlock, the last known surviving one at that, astonishes me.
Some people really do hold grudges and I'm speaking of the generational variety. Hate that runs so deep that my children, should I have any, will have a basket full of insults before they can even speak.
Why? Well, we Matlock's are a very magical family.
Watcher, what are they even putting on networks nowadays? Anyways...
You might not believe in magic but I do have proof. See? Do you see! Sparkles! What's the spell called? I don't know, sparkles? Yeah, I just short of wriggle my fingers and ta-da, SPARKLIES!
Any ways or rather, long story short. My family, my parents to be exact, did their best to use their power to subjugate and control any and everyone they ran into pretty much and their bad actions has basically banned me from the magical realm. Despite me having nothing to do with it I've been told I'm far too much of a risk and so here I am, sparkling up my fingers with just a pinch of success.
If magic runs through my bloodlines it has likely skipped right over me.
So what you see here is just a normal girl. Mainly, at least.
Sure, I can do a few tricks but they never amount to much. Obviously so since here I am in a humble little house eating mac and cheese that came right out of a box for dinner.
If I were some powerful spellcaster I would at least feast on steak every night. I'd poof it into existence or something.
Despite it all I believe it is for the best. The no magic thing I mean. It allows me to be free and it gives me a chance to be normal.
Like for instance, I get to head over to the bluffs on a perfect lukewarm day and just sift through the pool and enjoy the world around me. Appreciate the water on my skin, the clouds drifting by, even the mosquitos buzzing about in frustration as they realize I might appear a perfect feast to them but they can't partake.
I've been told that when you have magical ability it is harder to appreciate the natural world. I don't really understand why that is but...again, maybe that is for the better?
So I have no issue just floating and letting the day pass me by.
And pass me by it does...
Before I knew it the sun had fully retired and the once orange sky had given way to a deep and calming blue.
Despite the soothing vibe that came with night it also dragged in a chill. Well, more than a chill as snow, speckles of it really but snow all the same, started falling from the sky.
That's Windenburg for you, I guess.
I should have fled home. After all, it was chilly enough to nag at me and late enough to remind me that I should be in bed and yet...
And yet this castle, a reminder of times past, nabbed my attention. It was a little while off from the bluffs, a long ways off, actually, but it stood so stern in the distance that it touched my curiosity and pulled my feet, step by step, nearer.
It was Chevalier Castle. The place my friend, my dear friend Valerie, told me about. Warned me about even.
But standing before it didn't scare me. It was just a castle, after all. Whatever happened here happened long ago, but now? Now it was just an empty place. Maybe I'd adventure through it sometime?
Not tonight though...

the ending of Matlock's first episode a very good reason why audience has grown. The ending is a entirely 'once more with clarity' if aware of the ending, but not exactly the ending, you'll open to spotting the threads.
Seeing the ending is a entirely different story that warms up your heart and throws you down the lane of 'each and every single lawyer deserves this, save for the interns and maybe that lawyer that Mattie is helping' due to the set up in introducing the main characters.
The ending is exactly the cheesy kind of thing that's seen in a old television program when it comes to the family life in a really good kind of way. A total mood whiplash from what was expected over the course of the episode. Although, very welcomed.
The story is unique and I'd like to see the mystery of the season solved before it gets canned. I'd treat it as a limited series until it's renewed for season 2, but it's really good.
Madeline deserves to go through with it all, let it be cathartic, vindictive, heartbreaking, and be at some measured peace after having fractured trust that was built.
Kathy Bates is a very good performer in this story.
Kudos!

The hunt is on when NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 4 makes its way to the broadcast spectrum. At least we finally have something to focus on other than Gibbs.
Not that the character hasn’t led an exciting series. However, it seems like everyone has Gibbs on the brain lately. The man needs time and space to strategize, but we’ll get to that.
Nothing gets adults moving faster than the thought of a small, innocent child snatched away from their parents. Maybe the team can finally function as a unit instead of one voice after another talking over each other.
Many viewers have commented that the team on NCIS: Origins lacks the same group effort that the sister series all have. I heard you, and I agree a little.
Do You Think The Team On NCIS: Origins Has Less Chemistry Than Its Sister Shows?
They aren't functioning as a team, yet.
What do you mean? They already solved two cases together.
The Team On NCIS: Origins Is Still Finding Their Footing, And That’s Fine
Here’s the thing about a prequel series like NCIS: Origins: it’s supposed to be where everything started. To sell that premise, things must be slightly more dysfunctional than in the future.
Think about it. If the station ran like a normal one does with rules and protocols, Gibbs would never have been hired. The show has made great strides to remind audiences that Gibbs failed his psych test.
And if they need some help with this case, call Morgan from High Potential. She just about turned over Heaven and Earth looking for two little girls in High Potential Season 1 Episode 4.
However, given Gibbs’ recent losses, I have a feeling he is about to go “Papa Bear” on this whole case. Heaven help the rest of the team.
As we can clearly see from the portrayal of the younger Gibbs, the man is not well. Who could blame him? He lost the two most important people in his life. He lost his family.
Considering where the season is likely headed, it’s no wonder the writers are doing everything they can to show how shattered the character is. He’s a good man about to do a bad thing.
Will working a case involving a missing little girl send Gibbs over the edge? We already know he has no problems breaking the rules for justice, as he did when he trapped Prado in the elevator in the previous episode.
I’ve seen a number of viewers comment that Gibbs was poorly cast. If you’re like me, you probably thought there was too great a height difference between the two actors.
Austin Stowell looks a lot taller than Mark Harmon. I hate to break it to you, but there is only an inch difference between their heights.
If the issue is with their faces, I can’t help you there. People look different as they age. I’ve shown people pictures of myself from ten years ago, and they don’t recognize me. Perspective, people.
An Overused Trope On NCIS: Origins Adds Much-Needed Levity To The Series
She doesn’t get much screen time, so while I’m happy that whatever is happening is giving us more Mary Jo, the writers better not harm a hair on that woman’s head.
If you read the NCIS: Origins Premiere Review, you know I clocked Mary Jo’s character as a cliche and a trope. She’s the sassy older black woman who handles all the admin jobs.
It is such an unbelievably overused trope that is still happening on shows like Matlock. However, I hate to say it, but the trope works. It adds fun where it’s needed.
What Makes A Man Like Gibbs Throw Out His Beliefs And Take Justice Into His Own Hands?
The official synopses for NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 4 reads: “Still grieving the loss of his wife and daughter, Gibbs helps the team work a case involving a missing girl. The moment that irrevocably changed Gibbs’ life is revealed.”
There’s a good chance we’ll see what pushes Gibbs over the edge in the next episode. What could it be that makes a man like Gibbs take justice into his own hands?
One thing we need to watch is how Agent Dominguez fits into this whole plot. At the end of the first episode, it is abundantly clear that Lala is somehow caught up in Gibbs’ story.
We’ll have to wait and see what NCIS: Origins has in store. However, I want to give Kyle Schmid another shoutout. He is doing a fantastic job playing the younger Franks.
Apparently, a lot of you agree. I’ve seen so many comments about how well the series did with casting. I am right there with you. Schmid has fully embraced and embodies the character.
Wherever the road leads, you can count on me to absorb every second of this fantastic series with you. For now, check out the promo for CBS‘s NCIS: Origins Season 1 Episode 4 below!

(contains spoilers for The Stray Spirit)
excerpt from The Spirit Well, chapter 7:
The Vornik Post presents THE PEEK OF THE SEASON Your Guide to Every Dance, Sighting, and Proposal in Matlock My gentle readers, we are merely days away from the opening ball of the Matlock season, and the city has filled to its brim with society on both sides of the border. A simple stroll by the Oakvale Grand informed me that a certain Lady Albingdale has already had tea with one Lord Kolva. Lord Kolva’s daughter failed to make a match last season—shall we see sparks fly between the miss and Lady Albingdale’s son, Mr. Thomas Albingdale? This writer finds it highly unusual to secure a match so early in the season, but a fast boat beats the waves, as they say. If one is disappointed at the news of Mr. Thomas, be heartened that the Trellis has answered our most fervent prayers for the season—Karlson himself will be performing at the Trellis in just over a week’s time, accompanied by the Guild’s new debut, one Mr. Emry Karic of Dawnstone fame. I dare say that by the time I finish writing this column, tickets will have already sold out.
me, reading this back: Emry!! Emry, I know that guy!! he's in the paper!!
#the spirit well#emry karic#not sure if I'll keep the gossip rag excerpts just yet but they're fun to write
