“The drill on the “Poundcake” was a complete fluke/creative accident. We were playing, and I always like to play in the control room because I hate wearing headphones. Ken Deanne, who was my maintenance tech for my studio at the time, happened to be replacing a piece of outboard gear behind me while we were playing. He left the drill laying right in front of me as he was going to grab a replacement piece of gear. As I am sure you know, a guitar pickup is very similar to a microphone. I happened to grab the drill, and by sheer luck it was in the same key as the song. So I asked Alex to start “Poundcake” again from the beginning, and I used the drill over the pickup and scraped it on the strings for the intro. I also used it for a second or two during the song’s solo. It’s just one of those funny unplanned things that happen every so often. Since it was on the record, I ended up using the same drill every time we played the song live.” EVHgear interview Aug 2015.

Well.

So uh, yeah. Things just kinda happened lately and sure enough, the guitar is now done. Er...whoops! XD

Anywho, yeah, this has been a lifelong dream of mine to own my very own EVH Frankenstrat style guitar. And for under a $1,000 no less! If I would have done anything differently, then I would change the tuning heads to locking ones as at present, it tends to lose tuning rather frequently-which can be a nuisance.

Another thing would be to replace the nut from a plastic one to something along the lines of Tusq as plastic nuts don't stay in tune all that well imo. Other than these, I am very happy!

(Because I know people are gonna be pissed off with me for not replicating it exactly like Eddie’s original, listen in and listen close. Who gives a shit! Yes, I know that it doesn't look exactly like Eddie's. That was the whole point. It was done on a budget of under $1,000 or £765. If you don't like it, then tough. It's my build so therefore I don't care what you think.)

Counting the days until I get this. Might not be this color but because I need a much more comfortable guitar to play while sitting in my wheelchair. I’m getting excited about it because playing guitar is something that not everyone thought I would be able to do. It’s not perfect and it never will be. And I don’t expect to be a female Eddie Van Halen, Richie Sambora, Mick Mars, DJ Ashba or any of the other guitarists that I have loved for years. I just know that it’s something that I can do and need to do for myself!

Today, and for the first installment of The Zone of Tone, we’ll be exploring the sound of the late and great Eddie Van Halen.

As far as his early sound is concerned, what he used is still a mystery to this day. What we know is he recorded with two main guitars: an Ibanez Destroyer and a Frankenstein he built using replacement parts and spare electronics. We also know he used a Marshall amp cranked to ungodly levels.

Eddie also used a tape delay, as well as an MXR phaser, and an ambient reverb.

Now, for the fun part! To get that early VH tone, you’ll need:

1. An amp capable of a decent sounding 80′s style distortion, or alternatively, a clean amp with a nice distortion pedal. (Check out the Wampler Pinnacle)

2. A solid body guitar with a humbucking pickup in the bridge position.

3. A phaser pedal. MXR has reissued the exact pedal Eddie used, but you can find clone circuits for cheap. (Our recommendation: Joyo Vintage Phase)

4. A delay pedal. Ideally, you’d want a delay that’s voiced to be tape-like.

5. Lots of reverb! Your amp’s built-in reverb will do just fine.
