Drats! Foiled by AI art again!
#the ship painting that I reblogged this morning but have now deleted#the longer I looked at it the more insane the ships' masts and rigging started to look like#it's always the masts and the rigging that gives maritime AI art away#anyway!#just making a post to own up to my mistake since I do think AI art is in many ways unethical and that it should always be labeled as such#it's not that it can't be visually appealing and interesting in its own uncanny way#but the fact that the models are trained on pictures made by real people who didn't consent to their work being used that way... bleh#I also don't love living in a digital dystopia where it just gets harder and harder to tell what you're really looking at#but it is what it is!!#sigh#personal.

I think if a tumblr user says anything about history they should include Chicago style citations in the post. This is also true for other areas of study but I don't really know much about those so I only get filled with a blind rage when history posts are wrong. So that's what we need to fix first. For me.
#This is also true of my own posts and it's literally why#I try to only put history stuff in the tags instead of in proper posts#(so if I am wrong misinformation doesn't spread) and when I do I try to cite where I hot my information from#As best I can without doxing myself#Ie most of my information about maritime history comes from my job not classes so I only say 'I work at a history museum'#Not the specific museum I got that information from because that's not safe imo#Otherwise I'll say 'I got this from class' or 'I got this from a research projim working on' or a documentary or a book or etc etc#And if I say something like that you can always send an ask or a dm and I'll give you my sources!#But I don't include that stuff in actual posts because I'm at a weird point in my education#Where I'm technically trusted as a source of information for some people (working at the museum) but I still don't have my bachelors let#Alone the masters so I really don't feel comfortable positioning myself as an expert because I'm certainly not one#Which is why it makes me so frustrated when people who obviously have way less training than me (which is difficult! Like I said I won't#Even finish undergrad until this spring!) position themselves as experts and then just fucking#Lie about a field I care deeply about#Like on top of everything else I'm going into public history so it's about to be my job to clean up your mess. What the hell dude#This isn't about any specific post or person just the general trend of misinformation on this site#There is worse misinformation I know but I also truly believe that know history is necessary to making informed decisions about the present#And when you're mistaken about history or even worse completely rewriting it... That's bad#General rule of thumb if a history 'fact' 100%#Reflects your world view with no issues it's probably propaganda or at least not the whole story. With very few exceptions.#To quote Oscar Wilde 'the truth is rarely pure and never simple'#I made a lot of typos here don't worry about it. You get it.

Like, I am very pro labor, and I am less than thrilled at the way Biden is handling the situation with the railway unions right now, but I also think people on here are really missing the complexity of the situation because:
a) Biden didn't stop railroad workers from striking because he wants corporations to make money from Christmas shopping (I mean I'm sure that's part of it, but it's absolutely not his main consideration). He stopped them from striking because our railroad systems transport basic necessities like food, medication, and medical supplies throughout the country and if the trains stop running for too long people -mostly poor & disabled people- will die from it.
B) Railroad workers being over worked right now is the result of decades worth of bad policy that have lead to sever worker shortages. Most blue collar transportation and shipping industry jobs require significant amounts of training and licensing to be done properly and in a way that doesn't accidentally kill the workers . The trade schools that teach these skills have gone underfunded and ignored in educational policy for ages in favor of subsidizing four year universitys and have left us in a place where we don't have enough teachers to educate new workers at the rates we need. There is, unfortunately, no real solution to this issue that won't take at least another decade to resolve. This isn't the fault of the workers, and they shouldn't have to pay for the choice other people made with their own time and bodies, but it is the reality of the situation.
If you call railroad workers essential labor then you have to understand what that actually means. Their work isn't just essential to businesses it's essential to you. It's essential to your daily life and you could not live comfortably without it. You have to understand that if you want to understand why the threat of a railroad strike is being handled this way.
#us politics#I'm genuinely shocked at how many people are like 'we still do all this by train?!?' right now#Broski how did you think your shampoo got to the store? airplanes?#If you want to actually support railway workers right now you should go sign up for a railway works trade school#I'm not fucking joking#go join the industry so there's more hands#or join am csa or something so there's less pressure on the supply chains for basic needs#Some of the exact details for railroad stuff might be off here sense my family works mostly in the maritime industry#but I can't imagine that the problems they're having are that different than the ones that shipping industry is having right now#like the issue at the end of the day is not having enough workers#and you can not solve that quickly
