My OCs for @jayrockin's Runaway To The Stars! Drawn by the fantastic @translunaryanimus, Who has just posted a short comic with them as well as two of his own OCs!

In alphabetical order we have:

Aalok (she/her, they/it) - The ship's AI, here we see her in her preferred RC unit, that little toy robot on Maristel's shoulder. They acquired a functionally infinite supply of this toy when an entire container full of the product was recalled and left in the distro center. For reference they are 10cm (~4 inches) tall. When not in an RC unit Aalok represents itself as a monogram of its name. Since they have so many spares, it's not unheard of for Aalok to intentionally destroy or loose one of the units in service of a joke.

Maristel (They/Them) - 'Captain' of The Screwloose. (Info here) They take over piloting whenever Aalok lets them, but primarily they deal in negotiations with clients. While no where near as good as someone who specifically studies the languages of other sophonts, they can speak (or sign) all the common languages well enough to ingratiate themself and their crew to clients. Their pronunciation is great, but word choice and sentence construction is often lacking. Maristel is a unique GMH and also a biomodder, they take the attitude that: "If I'm already gonna be a weird croc-taur, might as well have fun with it and do what I want!"

Tuuvarii (she/they) Tuuvarii is the engineer for The Screwloose, They have a hormone imbalance that makes it so they're permanently 'in spring' much to the horror of other Avians, but it doesn't really get in the way often. Maybe because of this, maybe not, Tuuvarii is also a Carnalist, and almost always paints carnalist colors over her bright markings. Both her parents are Diver Avians but somewhere up the family tree there's a skimmer so she ended up with a more prominent crest and larger ears than most other Divers. Ears which they've done some modification to, circle cutouts and grafting skin from the webbing on their hands. Probably gonna post detailed timelines for these goobers once they're finalized and also a short story about the group meeting Hearts that I'm currently writing with @translunaryanimus. But until then I'll say this, the dynamic between these three is: Maristel & Tuuvarii- Besties Aalok & Maristel - Worsties Aalok & Tuuvarii - "Hello fellow shitster"

Ran my first D&D session in several months today. Mostly downtime, a chance for players to do their own thing for a few in-game weeks between adventure arcs. 

Our druid wanted to do some gardening, to try and cultivate a rare plant she had received as a thank you gift from a friendly NPC.

That led to the whole group riffing on gardening spells in D&D.

Cleric Player (CP): “Does druidcraft work for weeding?”

Druid Player (DP): *miming touching individual weeds* “Blight. Blight. Blight.”

CP: “I do have a homebrew spell that’s called ‘F*** That Guy in Particular’, not sure it works on plants. Also you’d kinda need it to be ‘F*** That Guy and His Whole Family’, I guess”

Me: “F*** That Plant and Every Plant That Shares Genetic Material With It”

DP: “And a patch of plants on the other side of the of the world suddenly withers and dies with no explanation”

Me: “Call it Herbicide”

Everyone else: *laughing at my good/bad pun*

Me: *laughing and shaking my head, after recommending it for literal years* “You guys have *got* to read Order of the Stick”

One of the best things about getting back into these worldbuilding projects is getting to revisit some of these species through a new lens. Grandwyld was always a magical realm, but I have really enjoyed exploring the speculative evolution side of things and leaving the more "typical" high fantasy stuff for Astrozoda, just to offer more differentiation between the realms.

This is the newest version of a maristelle, one of the five fae native to Grandwyld. Basal life in Grandwyld, for the most part, features four-sided radial symmetry from "face" end to "butt" end, but many more advanced species secondarily developed bilateral symmetry as well, as is the case in the maristelle and its ancestors. It has four limbs on each major junction of its body, as well as four eyes (two Proper eyes on the dorsal side vs two simpler photoreceptors on the ventral side) and four antennae/ears.

This one is naked, but inhabitants of Grandwyld do wear clothes--I mostly just wanted to make sure y'all could see his lil grabby arms. The individual here is probably about six feet tall at the shoulder.

I'll do a more in-depth study of the deep phylogeny of Grandwyld at a later point, but maristelles come from an evolutionary lineage not dissimilar to earthly birds, though their most recent ancestor likely filled an ecological niche that one would expect from an omnivorous giraffe capable of powered flight. Short bursts of speed ambush-chase predator, otherwise chewing on whatever random crap they can find lying around the plateaus.

Dungeons & Dragons & Dishcloths #1 - Shioria Maristelle

I decided to make crochet dishcloths for my friends inspired by their D&D characters!

Name: Shioria Maristelle 

Class: Druid (Circle of Stars), Level 4

Feats: Linguist (L1), Shadow Touched (L4)

Race: Air Genasi 

Age: 21

Shioria Maristelle hails from the isolated enclave of Starfall, located in the heart of the Gulthmere forest. The forest borders the south coast of the Sea of Fallen Stars, and the commune is built around a crystal clear pool with a fallen star fragment at its heart.

Children in Starfall are raised collectively by the community, but Shioria never quite fit in with the rest of her age group, preferring to spend time alone reading in the library or stargazing by the pool. Upon reaching adulthood, Shioria expressed her desire to travel beyond the forest, to chart the stars beyond the horizon, and learn their names and stories in other cultures. Many in the commune were opposed to this plan, but as an adult, Shioria was permitted to leave.

Shioria’s journey has taken her across the Western Heartlands to the humble village of Taevsbridge (in the midst of many mysterious mushroom mishaps), and ultimately to the great library fortress of Candlekeep. 

After capably escaping an extradimensional space and saving a researcher in peril, Shioria and a few companions caught the attention of the Keeper of Tomes, and were asked to serve as the Keeper’s Hands - extending a planned tenday of research into six months of probationary employment, with free room and board, a monthly stipend, and the freedom to peruse the library’s unparalleled collection of knowledge at leisure. 

In return, Shioria and her companions have acted in Candlekeep’s interests. First, venturing north to Baldur’s Gate to confront a seller of dangerous books. Next, east to Elturgard, crossing into the Shadowfell, to help a girl trapped in the body of a raven. Then south to the Cloud Peaks, to investigate the secrets of an abandoned village and platinum mine, high in the mountains.

As winter sets in at Candlekeep, and we approach the end of the first six months of service by the Keeper’s Hands, it will be interesting to see what mysteries and further adventures the months ahead have in store!

The second species to be introduced from Grandwyld, the arbasters! Arbasters are heavy-built critters, native to dense forests with low hills. The dentition here probably looks a little scary, but those huge scissor-like chompers and strong jaw muscles are primarily adapted for slicing and grinding tough vegetation.

Maristelles, arbasters, and the remaining two ruling species of Grandwyld (those being the sucrins and the deepdwellers) belong to a group of organisms called "natural fae." They are the first descendants of the ancestral fae, rare and ancient entities which were, according to legend, the first living beings to be granted life in Grandwyld. Though they were few, wherever their blood was spilt, their magic would remain, and such their closeness to the Great Mothers brought the lesser fauna of Grandwyld to higher power.

In any of my settings, when a creature is referred to as a fae or some fae-deriviative, often they can trace their lineage back to an ancestral fae. I should definitely do a little phylogeny chart of how the fae gene spread of kind to kind, but I have to post more work from Grandwyld and for the other settings where fae-adjacent creatures appear.
