october 9th, 2024
despite this semester going by extremely fast, i don't feel like i'm drowning, which i fully expected to be at this point. my multiple linear regression class ended over the weekend with a very cumulative final. it was a bit difficult but i think i got the grade i needed to pass the class with a B. only time will tell LOL.
lately, i've been working on my F31 application (which is also just setting the stage for my dissertation and acting as a diss proposal) and that's been very mentally challenging but in the best way. digging into the literature, refining what studies i want to do, and bouncing ideas off of my mentor has been fulfilling. i finally was able to put pen to paper coherently late last week and i finally feel like im getting somewhere.
lab is lab, and im still somewhat troubleshooting equipment but my supplemental study should be able to start later this month!
how are you all doing? what's the semester been like for you?

Lol! I don't speak cat, though I've had feline friends my entire life, they're still inscrutable to me. In terms of translating language, though, my mind was pretty blown by this new HeyGen AI technology:

CONCLUSION AND KEY LEARNING
How will the knowledge gained from this module influence your teaching methods?
The knowledge gained from this module will significantly influence my teaching methods. By incorporating AI tools like Gamma, Quizlet, ChatGPT, ReadAlong, Elsa Speak, HeyGen, and Murph, I can create a variety of activities that enhance student learning and engagement. For example, Gamma can be used to design interactive presentations and visual aids that make lessons more engaging. Quizlet allows me to create custom quizzes and flashcards that provide targeted practice and reinforce key concepts. ChatGPT helps generate detailed lesson plans and project ideas, saving time and ensuring that instruction is well-organized and aligned with curriculum goals.
ReadAlong offers personalized reading practice, helping students improve their reading fluency and comprehension. Elsa Speak provides individualized speaking practice, enabling students to develop their pronunciation and speaking skills. HeyGen and Murph offer personalized feedback on writing and speaking assignments, helping students improve their language skills and build confidence.
These tools help me to create a variety of activities that provide different learning styles and preferences. For instance, I can design interactive lessons that incorporate multimedia elements, such as videos, images, and audio clips, to make learning more engaging and dynamic. I can also create collaborative projects that encourage students to work together and apply their learning in real-world contexts. Additionally, AI tools facilitate formative assessment, allowing me to provide timely and personalized feedback that supports student improvement and development.
Overall, the integration of AI in lesson planning has transformed my teaching practice, making it more efficient, effective, and focused on student. The knowledge and skills gained from this module have allowed me to create high-quality lesson plans that meet the diverse needs of my students. As I continue to explore and incorporate AI tools into my teaching, I am confident that I can provide my students with engaging, personalized, and meaningful learning experiences that prepare them for success in the future.
Can you think of a specific lesson or activity where you could apply what you’ve learned?
One specific lesson where I could apply what I’ve learned in this module involves teaching demonstrative pronouns in a PreA1 English level class. Using ChatGPT, I can generate a detailed lesson plan that includes clear objectives, materials, and activities. For instance, I could start with a Gamma presentation introducing demonstrative pronouns ("this," "that," "these," and "those") with engaging visuals and examples.
Next, I would use Quizlet to create flashcards and quizzes to reinforce the new vocabulary. Students could practice using Read Along to read sentences containing demonstrative pronouns, allowing them to hear correct pronunciation and intonation. Elsa Speak would provide personalized speaking practice, helping students pronounce the words accurately.
For a project-based learning activity, I could use HeyGen to create a collaborative project where students take pictures of objects in the classroom and use demonstrative pronouns to describe them in a short video presentation. Murph would be helpful for providing feedback on their spoken presentations, ensuring they use the pronouns correctly and confidently.
By integrating these AI tools, I can create a dynamic, interactive, and personalized learning experience that not only teaches the students about demonstrative pronouns but also engages them in meaningful practice and real-world application.

the first month of the semester has consisted of a lotttt of reading, iced coffee, and ordering stuff for lab. some highlights: im narrowing down what i want to do for my dissertation, i'm getting a really nice work laptop, and i got a raise!
i had my first clinical neuro exam on thursday and i actually think it went okay, but we'll see what my grade is lol. i have my data science class final in a couple weeks (its an accelerated course) and then right after, my biostats and informatics class starts for the last half of the semester.
i hope everyone's semester is off to a great start!

enjoy this unusable failed "Lip Syncing" test footage
I was about to start testing "Lip Syncing" in runway with generated video. Getting characters to speak dialogue is still a little wonky. Yeah, you can do plain old narrators or through HeyGen, but you'd kinda like a bit of a performance to go with the dialogue.
One problem with runway's "Lip Syncing" tool is that if the video has inconsistent lighting, it's gonna be a no-go. And, of course, I generated this video to be from a gritty sci-fi indie arthouse drama, which gave the footage some great lighting and shadow effects, which, in turn, the AI sees as inconsistent lighting. Well, then.
