I’ve just re-read a couple of chapters from the Marion Meade book and my god, what was her problem??!!! I can’t work out if she hates Buster or is in love with him, her attitude is so strange.
And how can she possibly know all the intimate details of Buster and Natalie’s sex life? She portrays Natalie as a boring, frigid and talentless and Buster as a slutty, cold hearted fuckboy who married Natalie because she was convenient.
Where was she getting this from when she didn’t personally know them? Is she making it up, making assumptions or listening to gossip? I don’t know, but I don’t recommend Cut To The Chase.

MY BULLY OC - MARION HAMILTON
Marion 16-year-old Greek student at Bullworth Academy, is the epitome of privilege and ambition. Raised by his narcissistic dad, who owns a successful tourism company, Marion constantly seeking approval and validation. With strained relationship with his cousin , whom he views as both a rival and a means of gaining attention, Marion driven by the need to be recognized, particularly by his dad.
Though he is involved in numerous school activities, his interest in them fleeting; he starts many things but drops them just as quickly when they no longer hold his attention. One moment he might be diving into fencing, the next, he’s bored and onto something else, whether it’s learning the piano or attempting to master photography. His attention span is as fickle as his mood, often quitting halfway because the novelty fades fast. Despite this, he pours his energy into whatever catches his eye at the moment, convinced that being seen in different circles will somehow earn him the admiration he craves.
At his core, Marion deeply insecure individual, masking his vulnerability with snobbery. His constant need for attention is a reaction to his father's emotional distance, hoping to one day gain the affection he desperately seeks. As a Greek, Marion has a deep appreciation for his heritage, and although it’s often overshadowed by his preoccupation with status, he occasionally enjoys the philosophical debates or the quiet escape of reading about Greek mythology. However, like everything else in his life, his interests are short-lived, swept away by the next distraction that promises more excitement or admiration.
In short, Marion an ambitious and constantly dissatisfied teenager, forever chasing after approval, but never able to truly commit to anything, always searching for something that will finally make him feel worthy.

I wish the 1954 Sherlock Holmes show with Ronald Howard and H. Marion Crawford had done Charles Augustus Milverton.
That story is ripe for a slapstick sitcom adaptation. RIPE, I tell you!
Holmes pretending to be a plumber while having no idea how to be a plumber. AND while wearing a rubbish fake goatee. Watson immediately offering to make them matching black masks. The pair of them sneaking through Milverton's house and being so pleased to get a Good Grade In Burglary. They are then startled out of their skins by Milverton's pet cat.
The climax? No need for vicious murder, it's been done on the show but the method in this case is a bit atonal. So the back-up plan becomes their actual plan. They sneak up on Milverton once he enters his study. Watson attacks, bundling him in a coat so he can't see them. They tie him up, burn everything in the safe, and run away! Success!
And, of course, the next morning Lestrade comes around with news of the burglary, can they help? He describes the alleged culprits using eyewitness reports from the servants who chased Holmes and Watson from the house.
Tell me you can't imagine Howard saying "that could be a description of Watson", and the look on Crawford's face!

Daphne Redesign
Tumblr media
Nymph Dress
This one’s still an outfit and not her Nymph transformation. She wears this attire during her time on Andros, where she studies to become a Nymph. (That is because to become a Nymph, you need to meet some requirements; Sirenix is among them, and only on Andros can you obtain your Sirenix.)
Tumblr media
Casual Dress
This one is more of an everyday attire she wears on Domino when she’s at the palace.
The necklace—which she always wears, only tucked under her clothes—is a sword. Marion gave it to her as a gift; it’s very important to their family, and Daphne is very fond of it.
Tumblr media
Riding Attire
Pretty self-explanatory. Despite being a fairy and having wings, Daphne loves riding. As she grows older, it’s one of the rare moments she has alone with her father, who taught her how to ride.
(Oritel and Marion used to go riding when they were still getting to know each other and Marion wanted to show him around the kingdom. But at some point, Marion’s horse—the one she’d been riding since childhood—died, and she was so heartbroken she didn’t feel like she wanted another one. Besides, as queen, she’s quite busy as she is, and prefers flying anyway.)
Tumblr media
Sword-fighting Attire
This one’s pretty self-explanatory as well. Daphne wears it during her sword-fighting lessons with Hagen. Sometimes she spars with her mother and father as well, though. Oritel is the better of the two; Marion has always favoured her own magic over weapons.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Traditional Dress (with royal mantle)
Both are worn during festivities, ceremonials, and official events. There’s one for different occasions. This one is worn during the celebration that precedes the beginning of the year, when fires are lit all over the kingdom, and the people of Domino burn puppets that are made to resemble the dead that they have lost within the curring year. Their ashes burn for say, and they are said to chase away the cold season.

Offtopic Offseason #5 - CoimbraBertone and the Indiana Jones Blogpost.
So, I watched the first three Indiana Jones movies for the first time these last few weeks. Those being Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom, and The Last Crusade. Also, before that, I was watching my friend Andy play through the video game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. I have thoughts.
Plus, the Super Bowl was last weekend and that's kinda an unavoidable black hole devouring anything else that could've happened that weekend, so there isn't much racing news to discuss right now.
Indycar aired some commercials during it which hopefully draw people in, but until we get to St. Pete for the first race, it's hard to say how effective they were.
So, onto Indiana Jones.
I liked them. Raiders of the Lost Ark and Last Crusade are both great movies, Temple of Doom isn't as good, but it still has plenty of iconic moments and I enjoyed it well enough.
My first impression was honestly...wow, I've seen so much references to this stuff. Like there were moments I knew were from Indiana Jones, like the giant boulder chasing Indy, opening the Ark and it melting the Nazi faces, and the minecart chase from Temple, but there other things I didn't realize.
Like in Family Guy, Road to Germany, they do the whole escape the plane in a raft thing, with Stewie even making fun of one of Willie's lines. I didn't know that was from Indiana Jones. The motorcycle chase in that episode is probably a reference to Last Crusade as well, albeit a bit less 1 to 1.
So yeah, iconic movies that I've seen referenced a lot, and now I finally understand those references.
So, Raiders of the Lost Ark...
I liked Belloq as a villain. His Egypt clothes with the way his hair looked kept making me think of Alain Prost even though objectively he doesn't look all that much like Prost, but there's where my brain went. I like that he's a different kind of evil than the Nazis around him - he doesn't have a cause, he's just self-interested and wants to get one over on Jones - but he is still very much evil.
Toht is another fun character because he's just so ridiculous. The coat hanger scene made me burst out laughing.
Colonel Dietrich is probably the flattest of the villains, but I get that they needed more of a straight-up Wehrmacht guy to be the direct threat that neither Belloq nor Toht could really be.
As for the heroic characters, I have to admit, with everything I heard about Marion from watching the game and reading up on the movies a bit, she is not at all what I was expecting. For some reason I kinda thought she was gonna be a non-action rich girl who is the daughter of a rich gentleman type - and in fairness, Ravenwood does seem like it would be an old money name - but instead she's a lot more of a rougher and more confrontational character.
And I suppose that is more interesting.
Sallah's fun, John-Rhys Davies has a great voice, and I was happy to see him back in Last Crusade.
Some of the effects are very dated and the sounds - especially the punch sounds - are as well, but it's an old movie so what are you gonna do? I accepted that as a relic of the time and enjoyed the movie in spite of that.
Something dated that's a bit harder to forgive is Temple of Doom.
Let's start with the positives: Lao Che's club is a lot of fun. I think his club is a reused set from Return of the Jedi because with how white and smooth it is, along with the seating bowl we see in one of the shots, it reminds me a lot of the Mon Calamari cruises from Episode VI. I could be wrong about that, but they were filmed a year apart and Lucas literally named it Club Obi-Wan, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if the whole thing is a redressed Star Wars set.
Willie's a bit grating. There's no way around that, I'm sorry.
Short Round though...yeah, he has a few annoying moments, but I actually found him endearing. The ways that he looks up and mimics Indy - sorry, Dr. Jones - are fun, and it's nice to see Indy cares about him too.
The portrayal of India though...oof.
Spielberg and Lucas have apparently said that the whole dinner scene with the eels and eyeballs and monkey brains and all that is supposed to be a ploy to scare off Indy and the British officer dude, but...they did not do a good job of conveying that at all. It just feels like over the top orientalism.
Same thing with the Thuggee cult in general. Mola Ram's costume is all over the place and with his skull helmet off, that red paint on his forehead feels a lot more like the other type of Indian. It's like a storm of foreign culture cliches thrown together at random and it's pretty damn jarring. They even got the Maharaja torturing Indy with a voodoo doll which...okay then, I guess we really are just throwing anything and everything at this, huh?
From what I understand their portrayal of Kali is also completely off.
There's also a lot of brown face in that movie. The late Pat Roach was playing the slavemaster, for instance.
Then making the British Army show up at the end to save Indy & co...sheesh. No wonder this movie got banned in India for awhile.
Still, if you can get past all that and see it as a product of its time, it's a fun enough movie. It's the weakest of the trilogy though.
Onto Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, what else do you need?
No seriously, that's it. It's good, watch it.
...
...
...
Okay fine, I'll talk about it.
I like this one a lot. I know Raiders is the classic one that everyone loves, but this one might be my favorite.
Venice, Austria, Berlin, Antioch, down to Petra in Jordan...it's a lot of fun set locations and set pieces. I really enjoyed Elsa as the "Indy girl" of this movie, I really enjoyed the banter back and forth between Henry Sr. and Indiana, and I think the Nazis in this movie are just great antagonists.
They look evil as fuck, they have the Hugo Boss fit on fleek, Vogel is a great villain, the modified World War I tank was a great set piece, and we have plenty of old car porn in this one - particularly the old Rolls Royce, which is not, in fact, a Phantom II - so what's not to like?
Well, Donovan probably goes down a bit too easy. I know that these movies are big on the whole villains are destroyed for trying to harness a power they cannot understand, but he does die pretty quickly and pretty stupidly. I guess the Vogel fight was pretty long, so a long Donovan fight probably would've bogged the ending down a lot, but it was a bit disappointing to see him easily duped into killing himself.
Elsa's end, meanwhile, i thought was fitting. She couldn't let go of her obsession, and in the end, the grail's spell got to her. It almost got to Indy too, but then Henry gave him the fatherly love which is what he really wanted. And yeah, that's a bit schlocky, but who cares? it's nice and meaningful.
So yeah, none of them are perfect movies, but I enjoyed them a lot.
The Great Circle fits in among the movies quite nicely, I think. Gina fits as another "Indy girl" and is probably my favorite when adding her in to the classic movies, and Troy Baker does such a great job as Indy that even Harrison Ford gave him his blessing.
Plus ending on karate fighting a Nazi on the top of Noah's Ark is exactly the type of goofy shit these movies would come up with and I mean that in the best way possible.
Oh, one other thing I wanted to yap about: there are a lot of scenes in these movies where the guns are very clearly not firing anything, and again, I get it, old movie, but wow, sometimes it's really obvious. There was a bit in Last Crusade where Indy thrashed around an MP40 that wasn't doing anything, and it straight up took me a second to realize they were trying to show him shooting.
Old movies gonna old movie.
I'm gonna watch the next two movies soon, probably this week, but from what I hear, they're not quite up to snuff. Let me know if you guys want my thoughts, otherwise, this is probably gonna be the last Offtopic Offseason for awhile because it's the Daytona 500 this weekend. They'll be a NASCAR race every weekend from now until November, and once NASCAR starts, the likes of MotoGP, F1, and Indycar aren't far behind.
Looking forward to the Henry Jones Jr.polis 500.

2024 Writing Round Up
Thank you so much @cha-melodius for the tag!!!
This year has felt so long and so short at the same time 😅 I'm going into this blind, so let's find out together how many fics I published this year!!
Total: 52
....holy fuck. I mean I did Flufftober this year, and some of these are podfics, but damn
January - 5
"Ravens Love The Snow"
(TMFU Movie; G; 485 words) While working on my winged people anthology, I saw a video of a raven playing in the snow and got inspired lol
"Michelin Star Spy"
(TMFU Movie; T; 3k words; UNFINISHED) Illya is a very important food critic, so he has to keep his identity and profession a closely guarded secret. Turns out he is a little too good at that, and he is swept up into a fascist-busting spy plot lead by a cocky American man and a prickly German woman working for some mysterious organization known as "U.N.C.L.E". ● OR ● 5 times Illya pretends to know what's going on, plus 1 time he actually does
[P.S. I promise this fic isn't abandoned lmao]
"You Take Me In Your Arms When Walls Are Closing In"
(TMFU Movie; M; 2k words) Christmas in England has come and gone, New Years on its heels, but somewhere in Illya's chest, a longing like a thorn has buried itself deep. It's January 7th, and Illya has his head pillowed on his arms, pointedly avoiding the paperwork on his desk.
"In Summer We Can Taste The Rain"
(TMFU Movie; G; 903 words) Illya tries very very hard to ignore the urge to go out and use the warm summer rain to preen. He fails.
"Trapped Within An Abstract From A Moment Of My Life"

"I'm Going to the Stars Tonight"
(TMFU Movie; G; 2k words) Solo baits Illya into flying for the sake of it for the first time in a very long while. Being nearly drunk helps achieve that goal. (Winged Spies Part Two)

(TMFU Movie; N/R; 2k words) A chase in the air goes south for Illya. (Winged Spies Part Three)
"My Wings Have Been So Denied"
(TMFU Movie; N/R; 3k words) Illya's wings always grew faster than he did. They were big and heavy, and he couldn't fly when all his friends could. A year before his father is sent to the gulag, his parents take him to the doctor for it.
"You Had To Be A Big Shot, Didn't You (You Had To Open Up Your Mouth)"
(TMFU Movie; E; 9k words) A shudder runs down Solo's spine when he uses his wings to seduce a target. A spike of panic pierces his heart when anyone touches them, even Gaby or Illya.
"Kintsukuroi"
(TMFU Movie; G; 1k) Kintsukuroi - The Japanese art of fixing broken ceramics with lacquer mixed with precious metals. ●●● Many years after the events of "You Had To Be A Big Shot, Didn't You (You Had To Open Up Your Mouth)", Solo sees a familiar face in a coffee shop that he never thought he'd see again.
March - 4
"I Will Always Find My Way To You [Podfic]"
(TMFU Movie; T; 5 minutes) In the end, it takes Illya almost five hours to find Rudi. Five hours, in which his mind supplies him with an endless array of horrors, all of which could be happening to his foolish cowboy.
"Always A Well Dressed Fraud"
(TMFU Movie; M; 3k words) "It's much easier to trust a drink you fixed yourself." An alternate version of The Watch Scene, plus a follow up.
"Just Hold Out Against The Night"
(TMFU Movie; M; 1k words) One does not simply walk away from nearly drowning in a harbor. Illya makes it back to the hotel room, but once his heart stops racing, his lungs begin to ache. ● OR ● This is what happens after Solo saves Illya from the harbor of the satellite factory.
"Uneasy Ally Of The Body"
(TMFU Movie; M; 1k words) A little drabble exploring what was going through Solo's head when Victoria drugged him.
April - 3

"If I Could Hold You For A Minute"
(TMFU Movie; T; 2k words) A letter from Gaby to her newborn baby.
"I've Been Watching You A While (Maybe You've Been Watching Me Too)"
(TMFU Movie; M; 3k words) Texas. The state of sprawling desserts, rich farmlands, and absolutely zero* communists.
*Not counting Illya, of course ;)
May - 1
"To Find Someone To Talk To, Who Likes The Way I Am"

July - 7
"Death, He Knows the Panes of My Face"
(TMFU Movie; E; 5k words) A mission goes sideways. Solo gets himself strung up from the ceiling and learns what it's like to be cooked from the inside out.
"Blood In Your Teeth and Mud On Your Hands"
(TMFU Movie; N/R; 1k words) Gaby drags Solo to a motocross race, where Illya Kuryakin, better known as The Red Peril in the motocross scene, wins first place. Solo is immediately enamored.
"I Am Your Lover (I Am Your Jailor)"
(TMFU Movie; E; 25k words; UNFINISHED) Twenty years after their friend is taken from them, Illya is called into service to guard the all-too-familiar looking Prince.
[P.S. I promise this one is ALSO not abandoned!!]
"[Podfic] Country Roads (Take Me Home)"
(TMFU Movie; T; 10 minutes) “We were supposed to turn off motorway half-hour ago!”
“We heard you the first time, Illya,” says Gaby, drumming her hands on the wheel. Her ponytail snaps like a whip as she rolls her window down. Outside, the rolling fields stretch away into oblivion as they speed along the grey-paved road. “There’s more than one way to get there.”
“Is not what map says,” grumbles the Russian from the back seat, but the sounds of crinkling paper speak up soon after, announcing that he has retreated back behind said map in silence.
"Would You Lay With Me?"
(TMFU Movie; N/R; 2k words) A sore throat. An itch just out of reach, banished only for moments at a time by a suppressed cough. Just the change of seasons, Illya told himself when the itching turned to burning as he went to bed that night. He was living in a much warmer climate than he was used to, after all. Surrounded by plants he didn't grow up inhaling the pollen of. ● OR ● Illya is sick and angry about it.
"[Podfic] The Words I Cannot Say"
(TMFU Movie; T; 3 minutes) Illya’s not a fool. He knows that if he had been faster, if the tracker’s signal had been stronger, then he might have saved Solo some pain. Saved him the silver nails that punched through his flesh. Saved him the bandages, torn from an old shirt in the warehouse, wrapped tightly around his bleeding hand.
"[Podfic] These Veins Like Wires"
(TMFU Movie; T; 20 minutes) The first time Gaby sees it, she is evesdropping on a conversation she is quite certain she’s not supposed to know about. —— Or, Five times that others noticed the collar, and the one time Solo did.
August - 8
"I've Told A Million Lies But Now I Tell A Single Truth"
(TMFU Movie; E; 3k words) Five times someone discovers that Napoleon Solo is transgender + the first time he does.
"Everything's Got A Price"
(TMFU Movie; E; 3k words) Napoleon Solo, a renowned mercenary in the underworld, is going to be hired to protect the son of Nikolai Kuryakin, a Russian Mob boss. Things take a slightly different turn once Nikolai leaves them alone together. (Part Two of "Now You See Me, Now You Don't")
"A Passion Crime With A Danger Sign"
(TMFU Movie; E; 6k words) Three weeks. That's how long it takes for the mystery organization after the Kuryakins to make an attempt on Illya's life. Solo has the chance to prove he's worth his price tag. (Part Four of "Now You See Me, Now You Don't")
"Religion Leaves a Bitter Taste"
(TMFU Movie; M; 1k words) The Prayer Vigil after Illya's mother is killed. (Before the events of Part One of "Now You See Me, Now You Don't")
"Dissecting Destruction"
(TMFU Movie; T; 3k words) An essay dissecting Illya Kuryakin's psychotic breaks, specifically the one before the infamous Watch Scene, and all of the detail and symbolism involved in it.
"Spies Are Forever"
(TMFU Movie/The Lone Ranger; M; 1k) Major Character Death is (technically) Temporary. They don't know how or why, but every time Illya and Solo die, they find each other in the next life. Neither of them had ever been able to communicate with the body they inhabited.
"For Death Is Not The Worst Of Evils"
(TMFU Movie/2081; E; 1k words) (Spoilers for the movie "2081", available on Youtube) The climactic scene from "2081", but if it were Illya and Solo.
"One More Sweet Boy To Be Butchered By Man"
(TMFU Movie; E; 2k words) "Then he said: don't you know? I am trying to make you great.
And I said: I do not want to be great, I want to be loved."
- Sue Zhao
•••
Illya is seventeen and suffering brutal treatment by his peers and higher-ups. (Suicide tag is that of a minor character)
September - 1
"Slip Inside The Eye Of Your Mind"
(Gravity Falls; T; 1k words) Two traumatized old men learning how to be people again- one cup of interdimensional coffee at a time.
October - 13
"TMFU (2015) Flufftober 2024"
(TMFU Movie; 12 Works; G, T, M, and E, 22k words total) My TMFU responses for 12 of the 31 Flufftober 2024 prompts.
"Waste The Night"
(Gravity Falls; T; 749 words) Flufftober Day Six: Mistaken Identity --- It's another late night in the lab, and Fiddleford assumes it's not his friend who gets his attention.
November - 1
"Approach, Appear"
(TMFU Movie; M; 956 words) "The roof is a place of morbid comfort, for him. When things felt too heavy, he would climb the stairs to the hatch and just sit on the ledge. He would lean back on his palms, letting the bite of gravel ground him, and just trace constellations, listening to the night birds call." ••• Illya likes to sit on the rooftop when his thoughts get too much. Solo tends to join him.
December - 2
"[Podfic] A Cowboy And A Communist Walk Into A Bar"
(TMFU Movie; T; 15 minutes) Deveny’s got his hands tucked into his pockets, watching Illya intently where the Russian has paused. They’d parked his pickup back down the road, in cover of some scraggly trees before trekking the rest of the drive on foot. It’s dimly lit by the pale orb of the moon hanging overhead like a mobile. The grass like three day old stubble under their shoes.
“I usually work alone,” Illya admits now, taking in the full size of the looming warehouse. And it’s true. Sometimes it’s Gaby, but he’s never had another partner. It’s a strange feeling, though not wholly unpleasant. “But this will not work. Not tonight.”
“Alright,” says the American at last, gilded in the moonlight. Voice dusty and raw like the landscape stretching out around them. He almost sounds as if he’s been gargling the sand. Maybe it’s nerves. Maybe it’s the smoking. “I’ll help ya. But it's in and out, no mess, and nobody knows we've been here. And we both forget about it in the mornin’. Deal?”
"Winter Exchange Fic"
(TMFU; ?; ????) Yet to be revealed.
Phew!! I don't know how I managed to get all of this written while also working 😅 Apparently I have more spoons than I thought! Turns out I just use them all to write LMAO

This is for pure amusement (sprung off a prompt). I'm attached to the idea Scott and Marion share custody of Guard Cameron AND harbor a Shakespearean comedic potential. Jeff Tracy gets to be a keen Commander and a cunning father. Col. Casey is not amused. There's a passing reference to BEFORE THE DARK.
Many thanks to @janetm74 for incessant support!
FROM A CERTAIN POINT OF VEIW
"Is.... is somebody there?... Hello?"
The kid's face was nearly drained of color and obviously scared. And oh so young! How early did the GDF enroll now?
The call came through directly to the island via a secure channel and Jeff switched the comm automatically, while engrossed in the backlog of reports at the desk.
"Hello! Mr Tr... Is Mr Tracy there?"
The connection was patchy. Jeff thought he could discern giant pine trees and snow in the background.
"It is I, son. Mr. Tracy. You called International Rescue - how can I help you?"
If at all possible, the boy's eyes grew wider and more anxious.
"N-no! Sc... Is Mr. Scott Tracy there?!"
"Cameron!?! What happened?!"
His eldest stepped back into the lounge, voice ringing with concern. Brown eyes lit up as the GDF kid saw a face he recognized.
"Scott! I mean... Mr. Tracy! I'm... not supposed to be calling you, but Lt. Van Arkle went dark and I..."
"Where are you!?! Sit-rep, soldier!"
Scott was already pulling the lamp handles of his chute down. A structured military address seemed to have pulled the boy on the other end of the call together a bit.
"Siberia, sir! Abandoned nuclear missile silos. Lt. Van Arkle went in to investigate a possible warheads sell-off. She gave orders not to call backup. I didn't know what else to do!"
"You did good, Cameron! I'm on my way! John, upload the coordinates to One!"
Scott was giving clipped orders already from the depths of the launch tube. A befuddled Jeff didn't have the time to wedge a word in sideways as One roared off from the pool and the connection to the hapless GDF soldier got cut off.
***
The rest of the impromptu rescue for Jeff was a jumble of thick worry and palpable annoyance of his sons, incomplete bits and bobs of data, grainy visual feeds from dark bowels of the missile launch labyrinth and a snowed in taiga, in the middle of what looked like a mayhem of a breakneck chase, flashes of shots fired, and at least on one occasion - a fistfight.
Next time he heard his eldest son's voice properly was from the elevator up from the hangars, once One completed the post flight checks. The strong, clear notes were vibrating with what Jeff was rather surprised to identify as distress, liberally overlaid with fury. The sentiment also came in stereo, fully echoed by an unfamiliar female voice:
"YOU COULD HAVE DIED!!!!!"

The remarkable cavalcade that subsequently entered the lounge area of the villa consisted of a visibly fuming Scott, his radiation grade uniform covered in muck and scorched areas grazed by laser fire, a young woman, carried in his arms, her GDF uniform in a similar state of dissaray, one boot off, replaced by a velcro sprain brace, and, peeking from behind them, a shy youth Jeff now recognized as Cameron, even paler than before and exuding profound misery. Scott marched to the couches and all but dumped his equally seething cargo on the cushions. Blue eyes were ablaze.
Virgil's move to offer a med scan and help was stopped on its tracks by the sizzle of silent daggers and lightning bolts exchanged between his brother and the Leutenant. In helpless confusion he turnied to Jeff, who was by then thoroughly amused by the whole pantomime. Scott eventually huffed and threw his arms up:
"Dad, meet Lt. Van Arkle, who thinks she could singlehandedly take down the Russian black market for nuclear weapons WITHOUT BACKUP!
"I HAD IT UNDER CONTROL!"
An attempt to jump off the couch was expertly stopped by a pillow, shoved under the injured foot, and an extra bright cerulean glare. Poor young Cameron, temporarily forgotten by all parties involved, was obviously trying to process the immediate proximity of THE Jeff Tracy in the flesh without hyperventilating too conspicuously.
Jeff did his best to stifle a laugh.
"Well, well... I do believe we've met, Leutenant! Albeit the last time around you tried to kill my son with a pool noodle."
The retort died out on the young officer's lips, as John's hologram in the center of the lounge enunciated a mumble maybe too intentionally:
"That certainly became a habit..."
Perplexed, Jeff was still quick to pave over the awkward pause.
"How's old Willem Van Arkle doing, Marion?"
The indignant stare up at Scott's full imposing height was momentarily deflated.
"Um... my father died... sir. After the mines were shut down he just... gave up..."
It was his turn to choke on the foot in his mouth. Blue eyes searched his gaze - free of ire and brimming with protective compassion. That definitely tumbled into a hole he didn't anticipate.
"I'm so very sorry for your loss!"
He meant it, of course. But Jeff Tracy also prided himself for nothing else if not quick thinking on the go.
"Now, kids, you need to get your reports straight for the GDF. Scott, do show the Leutenant up to the guestrooms at the Roundhouse. I insist you cross-reference your stories before the official debrief. Boys, would you show Cameron around the island? How do you like the pool, son?"
A half-nod from Dad was enough for Gordon to get the cue and drag Cameron and Alan out to the poolside. There was soon laughter and splashes and, possibly, a watergun fight. Jeff turned a pointed gaze at Scott, still towering over a notably subdued Marion on the couch.
"I suggest you get to it, Bluejay. You two don't have all day! We shall show our guests some patented Tracy hospitality, right? I'll let you know when dinner's ready."
Scott might have stifled an eyeroll, as he bent down to pick Marion up again and head for the elevator. Virgil jerked to the hidden closet, eager to offer the hoverchair or crutches Jeff himself had to use until recently, struggling against muscle atrophy. Dad's firm hand landed on the boy's shoulder and stalled the move with a squeeze.
At least there was no struggle or squabble that time around. Not till the elevator doors hissed shut, anyway. The whir of well-calibrated machinery was soon muted by overlapping shouts:
"YOU COULD HAVE DIED!!!!!"
Big, apprehensive brown eyes searched Jeff's face, full of doubt.
"Are you sure about that, Dad? They're gonna kill each other!"
"That's one way of looking at it, son."
The twinkle in his eyes was full of mischief.
***
Colonel Casey squinted at him, the hologram blue adding to the scorn. The dinner came and went and the lounge was, blissfully, quiet. The Tinies dragged Cameron down to the beach. John checked out to go over Scott's helmet camera footage - whatever was legible through heavy interference. MAX was sent up to the Roundhouse with a dinner platter once it was obvious the reports review took longer than expected. Or, maybe, precisely as long as expected. Gordon might have suggested to contract EOS for proof of life, which got poor impressionable Cameron to choke on a charred burrito.
"Is IR going rogue or are you trying to poach the GDF best and brightest to expand?"
The old friend's holo was burning a hole in his chest and Jeff felt himself smile into the sip of scotch. That was certainly one way of looking at it.

In April 2021, an Ohio teenager was apprehended after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase one Friday afternoon on Interstate 75 through Sumter and Marion counties near the Villages.
Cody James Russell, of Miamisburg, Ohio, described as having a "clean cut appeaance" was at the wheel of a stolen black Dodge Durango with Ohio plates at 4:25 p.m. Friday, April 16, northbound near Mile Marker 322 in Sumter County when his fast-moving vehicle began kicking up debris from the side of the roadway causing a hazard for other motorists, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
A patrol car from FHP pursued the vehicle into Marion County at a speed of 115 miles per hour where the Dodge Durango left I-75 at Exit 341 and began to travel in the wrong direction on County Road 484. Russell subsequently turned onto County Road 475A where he lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree.
Russell began running after exiting the vehicle and lost his shoes.
A Marion County Sheriff’s Office K-9 joined in the hunt for Russell. After he was captured, he was taken back to the crash scene where he was positively identified by the FHP trooper who had initiated the chase.
Law enforcement confirmed that the Dodge Durango had been stolen in Montgomery County, Ohio. It had a license plate that had been assigned to a 1997 Toyota Avalon.
Russell was arrested on multiple charges including grand theft auto. He was already on probation. He was booked without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.
