Now we're really starting to see the hold the South will have on the sound of rap and hip-hop in the 2000's. Just about every region that isn't the East Coast (and let's be real: New York specifically) had to fight to get their style of rap to be taken seriously. And when the East vs. West debate was reaching it's peak in the 90's, the South was treated like the third party option. I've linked to an article about André 3000's famous speech at the 1995 Source Awards, a moment that is marked by many as a turning point in southern hip-top.
Now in the 2000's, the impact of southern rap can no longer be questioned. This is partially due to the rising popularity of crunk, which has really taken off this decade. With Yeah! and Goodies, crunk was able to find a wider audience by fusing the genre with R&B (Crunk&B). This was also the year Billboard started publishing its ringtone charts, which was set to be published in late 2004. The ringtone era turned out to be bolstered greatly by this shift in the sound of popular music, as a majority of the songs making this chart would be rap.
But crunk was far from the only style of rap coming out of the south. Especially with the presence of iconic southern hip-hop act, OutKast. With the release of their double album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, André 3000 and Big Boi were not only able to experiment with different sounds and genres, but this album (these albums?) also introduced them to an even larger audience.

(Boadicea (2009 Remaster) by Enya)
Famously sampled by The Fugees on Ready Or Not. Check out the story behind use of the sample by Wyclef.
youtube
And by Diddy on the Mario Winans track I Don't Wanna Know.
youtube
And there's this which makes the Enya sample more explicit.
And this rendition.

Release: February 17, 2004
Lyrics:
I just can't believe this, man
It's just another night of these thoughts
Can't get this out of my head
Yeah
Somebody said they saw you
The person you were kissing wasn't me
And I would never ask you
I just kept it to myself
I don't wanna know
If you're playin' me, keep it on the low
'Cause my heart can't take it anymore
And if you're creepin', please don't let it show
Oh, baby, I don't wanna know
Oh, oh, baby
I think about it when I hold you
When lookin' in your eyes, I can't believe
I don't need to know the truth
Baby, keep it to yourself
I don't wanna know
If you're playin' me, keep it on the low
'Cause my heart can't take it anymore
And if you're creepin', please don't let it show
Oh, baby, I don't wanna know
Did he touch you better than me? (Touch you better than me)
Did he watch you fall asleep? (Watch you fall asleep, baby)
Did you show him all those things that you used to do to me? (Oh, do to me, baby)
If you're better off that way (better off that way)
Baby, all that I can say (all that I can say)
Just go on and do your thing and don't come back to me (oh, stay away from me, baby)
Yo, I don't wanna know your whereabouts or how you're movin'
I know when you in the house or when you cruisin' (that's right)
It's been proven, my love you're abusin'
I can't understand how a man got you choosin' (yeah)
Undecided, I came and provided
My undivided, you came and denied it (why?)
Don't even try it, I know when you lyin' (I know when you lyin')
Don't even do that, I know why you cryin' (stop cryin')
I'm not applyin' no pressure, just wanna let you know
That I don't wanna let you go (I don't wanna let you go)
And I don't wanna let you leave
Can't say I didn't let you breathe
Gave you extra cheese (come on), put you in a SUV
You wanted ice so I made you freeze
Made you hot like the West Indies (that's right)
Now it's time you invest in me
'Cause if not, then it's best you leave, holla, yeah

@mattellaneous asked for a line from song 69 ( heh ) from my spotify wrapped! -
"I don't wanna know if you're playin' me," Sami warns, turning back to one of his best mates with an uncharacteristically serious look in his dark eyes, "keep it on the low." Paranoia. Suspicion. Mistrust. It's been a while since it's hit him this hard, but it does happen sometimes, especially when shit goes sideways. Especially when he's exhausted after a very near brush with death. "Listen, I just... I need some space for a while. It's not personal."

So I’m a pretty big fan of the Enya song “Boadicea.” It’s basically just her humming over the most ominous synth music I’ve ever heard. It’s haunting to an absurd degree and I love it.
youtube
Now, many people probably know it from being prolifically sampled. The most notable example is the Fugees’ “Ready or Not,” which uses the sample fantastically:
youtube
But funnily enough, another song sampled “Boadicea” by accident since it sampled “Ready or Not.” That song is “I Don’t Wanna Know” by Mario Winans.
youtube
So here’s why I bring this up: Aside from Enya, there’s another artist credited on this song due to popping up for the third verss. And, uh, recent events really make that verse take on a new light, let’s say.

I want to do something that I did for the first time on my other blog around this time last year. These are some of my favorite songs from 2023. They're not necessarily at the very top of my list of favorite songs of the year. But they're a sampling of songs that put a smile on my face during the year. Enjoy!
youtube
Kylie Minogue - Padam Padam
One of THE songs of Summer 2023. Although I like a handful of her songs, I've never been the biggest Kylie Minogue fan (Sorry!). This ditty about the electricity of a first meeting (or is it about a certain throb during oral sex? - maybe that's just my dirty mind at work) was too catchy to deny, though.
youtube
Luke Combs - Fast Car
This Country remake of Tracy Chapman's flawless 1988 tale of love and the harsh realities that sometimes come later had a lot of fans, but is also a song that some found problematic. Regardless of everything else, I appreciated how faithful Combs stayed to the original...right down to leaving the original pronouns intact, which some often DON'T do when remaking a song originally recorded by someone of the opposite gender
youtube
Metro Boomin' featuring The Weeknd & 21 Savage - Creepin'
This one is a quasi-remake of a song about cheating and betrayal named I Don't Wanna Know that was originally released in 2004 by Mario Winans. Even though some aspects of the new version are different from the original, I liked the new feel that noted producer Metro Boomin' put on it.
youtube
Pink - Never Gonna Not Dance Again
Never Gonna Dance Again was a pure fun way to bring 2022 to a close and kept me dancing well into 2023. Things can sometimes get so heavy that we forget to stop and enjoy life. This was a perfect reminder to not get so bogged down in your own bullshit or anyone else's that you lose your happy. Advice we could all stand to keep in mind.
youtube
Sza - Nobody Gets Me / Kill Bill / Snooze
R&B singer/songwriter, Sza, probably had the biggest 2023 of any artist NOT named Beyoncé or *shudder* Taylor Swift. She's been a rising star in the genre since 2017 and had a breakout 2023. I enjoyed all three of the songs listed above and didn't want to leave any of them out of this spotlight. While Snooze is a song about passion for a relationship, Nobody Gets Me and Kill Bill are essentially breakup songs on opposite sides of a coin. One is soft and the other - inspired by the Quentin Tarantino movie of the same name - uh...isn't.
youtube
The Weeknd featuring Playboi Carti & Madonna - Popular
Popular was associated with the short-lived show, The Idol, which The Weeknd co-created and co-starred in with Lily-Rose Depp. I liked this tale about a celebrity who enjoys the limelight. Plus, as someone who knows a lot about the limelight herself, it was cool to hear Madonna's voice on this one.
