My headcanon for Mario and DK's post-Movie friendship is that they are mutually aware of their daddy issues and parallel struggles and whatnot, but rather than ever talking about it with one another, they instead punch stuff together. Or aggressively work out together. Just generally go full meathead together.

Oh definitely. It’s something that stays in the back of both their minds which upkeeps (some) mutual respect between the two, but there’s never a banter-free moment or just straight nuisance behavior on DK’s end.

I like to think that they CONSTANTLY debate over the stupidest things, and sometimes they get too passionate about the topic that it becomes a near-screaming match. It concerns people around them, but nah it’s just their dynamic lol. Then they’re like “yea cya tomorrow bro”

NEW MARIO & LUIGI GAME AND IT LOOKS FUCKING GORGEOUS!!! Love how well they've not just maintained but enhanced that signature artstyle. Also the idea of the Bros getting straight-up isekaied like that amuses me.

I would love to see the next Smash Bros. game (or any other fighting game, really) to have a rival system. Don't get me wrong, I love Ultimate's more personalized Classic Mode routes, but after playing Smash Remix, I want another gauntlet where the opponents are picked at random except for one of the last rounds where the opponent changes depending on the player's character. You pick Mario, either Bowser or Luigi await towards the end. Pick Ganondorf (a character who is infamously known for getting into the series through crunch development) and the rivals are villains like King K. Rool or a newcomer like Raven Beak (later additions with more deliberate designs). Picking Andy would have Marth, Robin, or Byleth at the end because both Advance Wars and Fire Emblem are turn-based strategies.

Come to think of it, the only platform fighter that I know with a rival system would be Shovel Knight showdown. Anyone know any others?

Best of 2023 Music #4: Jack Black “Peaches”

Sheer obsession can do wonders for many.

We’ve seen Bowser pine after Princess Peach for years as it’s the plot point of many Mario Games, with odyssey revolving around the wedding.

But Somehow, this year’s movie gave what nobody ever assumed would come from Bowser. A heartfelt ballad about his longing for something he wants and knows he’ll likely have to forcibly take.

And with Jack Black, ironically playing piano, well giving further life to this ballad, we get to see what many in gaming have known for years.

Bowser just needs to get over it.

But we still wouldn’t have one of the best songs of the year because of it, so keep longing Bowser it’ll serve us all the better.

Why do theses direct have to be so good recently ? It's too good !

Like, PAPER MARIO TTYD REMAKE !! Guys it's happening ! The gasp I made when I saw it, jus the first two notes of the beginning theme, loved that game ! And now, it's beautiful in HD, I looove it.

This, and we got Mario RPG's remake that looking pretty nice, the Mario vs Donkey Kong, the final booster pass that added more character than that what I expected, the Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, and finally that Princess Peach game !! I mean, it does look pretty easy and accessible to everyone, but that aside, what a charming game this look.

In short, I'm really hyped and happy.

Big fan of how astoundingly fucked up Bowser is in the Mario Movie.

Love that all he knew about Mario was that he was a human like Peach, and that's all it took to get blinded by white hot jealousy. Love that he tries to murder Luigi for no reason other than pure spite. Love that he has Toad tortured in front of Princess Peach until she caves to his demands to marry him. Love that he attempts to make a big show of slowly executing hundreds at their wedding, many of whom were Princess Peach's allies, because it technically fell within the bounds of their agreement. Love that he tried to nuke her kingdom for the crime of being visibly happy that Mario was alive.

Love that even when Mario is too physically and emotionally beaten down to do anything more than hide you can see Bowser gearing up to finish the job. Love that he tried to rip out Donkey Kong’s throat with his claws like a feral animal.

Love that he has an army of followers who are just as much of a menace as he is. Goofy as he is, he is so so terrible and insane. I love it. Genuinely hope he never gets a redemption arc.

Mario:

Baking a cake with Mario is an absolute joy ride. His enthusiasm is infectious as he hums Italian tunes and expertly guides you through the recipe. He’s a natural in the kitchen, treating it like an art form(From Princess Peach's Influence), but also leaving room for fun. He’s constantly taste-testing the batter and frosting with a wink, saying it’s "important to get it just-a right!" You both work seamlessly, though sometimes he gets a bit distracted when he starts tossing dough in the air like he’s flipping a pizza. In the end, the cake is flawless, and Mario proudly presents it as if you’ve both created a masterpiece together.

Yoshi:

Yoshi is incredibly eager to help, though a little clumsy in the kitchen. He loves tasting everything as you go along, sometimes sticking his tongue out too far and accidentally eating part of the ingredients. Despite this, his positive energy keeps you both laughing the entire time. You’ll have to keep an eye on him, though—leave the sugar alone for too long, and Yoshi will have eaten half of it. But once the cake is baked, Yoshi is so excited that he does a little happy dance, making the entire experience heartwarming and full of smiles.

Donkey Kong(DK):

Donkey Kong is surprisingly gentle in the kitchen despite his large frame, rowdyness and strength. He’s determined to help, though you’ll notice he can’t resist tossing bananas into the mix, even if it’s not a banana cake. You work together to mix the ingredients, with DK carefully following your instructions while occasionally sneaking bites of bananas and batter. His favorite part is the decorating—he insists on using extra bananas on top as garnish. In the end, the cake might not be traditional, but it’s definitely delicious and full of DK’s quirky charm.

Link:

Baking with Link is a quiet but calming experience. He’s not too much of a talker, but he follows your instructions with sharp precision, taking everything seriously. He might be a bit unsure about how to bake at first, but once he gets the hang of it, he’s fully focused. You share peaceful moments while mixing the batter and frosting, occasionally exchanging soft smiles. He takes care in every step, as if baking the cake is a mission. When it’s time to decorate, you both enjoy adding personal touches, making the final product as charming as it is delicious.

Samus:

Baking with Samus is efficient and organized(plus you get to see her out of her suit for a while...or at least her beautiful blonde hair as she doesn't have her helmet on). She’s precise with every measurement and action, turning the cake-baking process into a well-structured mission. While she’s not particularly emotional about the process, she surprises you with little moments of fun, like using her arm cannon to quickly whisk the batter or heat the oven. The end result is a cake that’s not only delicious but also expertly crafted. Samus might not be super expressive, but the small smile she gives when she sees the finished cake tells you she enjoyed the experience more than she lets on.

Fox:

Fox is all about teamwork in the kitchen. He takes charge but lets you take the lead where you want. You’ll notice him frequently checking the time and trying to make sure everything is on schedule, like a mission briefing. He’s fast but careful, and his competitive nature shows when he tries to perfect every step. Fox is also surprisingly playful, teasing you about your frosting skills or sneaking a bit of the cake mix while grinning. The cake turns out perfect, and he’s happy to share it with you, giving you a playful nudge, “We make a great team, huh?”

Kirby:

Baking with Kirby is pure chaos in the best way possible. He’s more interested in eating than baking, so you’ll have to keep him from gobbling up the ingredients before they even make it into the bowl. Kirby’s enthusiasm is unmatched, though, and he constantly tries to help—even if it’s just him licking the spoon or cleaning up the leftover frosting. Expect him to inhale bits of the cake as soon as it comes out of the oven, but when he finally settles down to share what’s left, "Poyo!" he’s all smiles and excitement, ready to enjoy your creation together.

Luigi:

Luigi is a little nervous in the kitchen, but he’s incredibly helpful and sweet. He often second-guesses himself, asking, “Is this okay?” or “Are you sure that’s enough?” but he’s so genuine that you can’t help but reassure him. You both share lots of laughter, especially when things go a little off track, like when Luigi accidentally splatters batter everywhere. By the end, the cake might be a little messy, but it’s full of love and care. Luigi is proud of the final product, especially since he got to bake it with you, and he happily shares a piece, blushing a little as he says it turned out great.

Captain Falcon:

Baking with Captain Falcon is intense and high-energy. He approaches the task like a race, moving quickly and shouting things like “Falcon Mix!” as he stirs the batter at lightning speed(whist making a bit of a mess). His enthusiasm is contagious, and you both end up laughing as he tries to make everything as epic as possible, even when it’s something simple like cracking an egg. The cake is finished in record time, and though it may not be the most neatly made, it’s definitely delicious. Falcon pats you on the back, grinning wide, “We totally smashed it!”

I really don’t understand people who think the Switch 2 is pointless or not a worthwhile upgrade.

I love my Switch 1 as much as anyone else does - I’ve poured several thousand of hours into hundreds of games, so I’ve seen the best and worse of the console. It’s amazing, but it’s really outdated. That doesn’t mean its bad - I still pick it up from time to time because its portable play is still very comfortable, but games are struggling to run well on it and thats just factually correct.

It’s not even a ‘Pokémon runs like shit’ situation because everyone knows that and I truly believe the fault there lies with GameFreak’s horrible optimisation. But look at how many other first party Switch titles struggle - Mario and Luigi: Brothership has horrible frame drops in the overworld. Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom’s constant performance difficulties made it hard to appreciate the game as much as I should. Breath of the Wild, even back at the launch of the Switch, was having a rough time running optimally. Animal Crossing New Horizons’ load times are abysmal. Xenoblade Chronicles’ dynamic resolution makes the game look extremely blurry. There’s a good reason people were clamouring for a Switch Pro to make these games play better.

I know most people buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games, but when you look at third parties as well, it’s really easy to see the Switch, which is on par with 20-year-old Xbox 360 hardware, can barely run most PS4-level games and definitely fails at PS5-level ports. We have miracle ports like Nier Automata which look and play phenomenally on the Switch, but then you have Mortal Kombat 1, Batman: Arkham Knight, even the miracle ports like Doom Eternal really struggle on the Switch 1, because the hardware is objectively outdated for the games.

But what the Switch 2 does, absolutely miraculously, is fix almost all of Switch 1 games’ problems for free thanks to its backwards compatibility. Brothership and Echoes of Wisdom perform excellently now. Breath of the Wild, without the upgrade pack, still runs at a constant 30fps on Switch 2. The Xenoblade Chronicles games now run at their highest possible resolution at a fixed framerate and look sharper and clearer than before. Animal Crossing New Horizons’ load times are massively shortened! And 99% of the Switch 1’s library is playable on the Switch 2. What Nintendo accomplished with backwards compatibility is nothing short of miraculous, because these games needed better hardware to reach their full potential.

And it makes me excited for future Nintendo games too. Donkey Kong Bananza looks far more ambitious and expansive than Mario Odyssey. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment runs at a flawless 60 frames per second when Age of Calamity had notoriously abysmal performance on the Switch 1 (now fixed with the Switch 2). Metroid Prime 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition looks unbelievably beautiful and runs at 120 frames per second - Absolutely jaw dropping! It’s obvious too that Nintendo has outgrown the Switch with their development ambitions. They want to make bigger, bolder, more ambitious games that the Switch hardware is incapable of. The development interview for Mario Kart World revealed it was originally being developed for the Switch 1, but wouldn’t run without massive compromises, and the developers desperately needed the stronger hardware for their artistic vision.

I understand if you don’t care that much about performance, you just want to play the games. Believe me, I beat Outer Worlds and Doom Eternal on my Switch, I’ve been through hell (pun intended). Nintendo isn’t abandoning the Switch because they clearly have games planned for it in the foreseeable future - Metroid Prime 4 and Pokémon Legends Z-A are releasing on the Switch 1, and next year Tomodachi Life 2 and Rhythm Heaven Groove are as well. You can keep playing your Switch, especially if you own an OLED or think its too soon to upgrade, and don’t personally see value in the stronger hardware unless more games like a big new Animal Crossing or Zelda release. That’s okay!

But calling the entire console unnecessary because of some spite towards the company is silly. I know how badly the Switch needed the upgrade. I played dozens of hours of No Man’s Sky religiously on my Switch and believe me, as amazing as it is to play the game portably, I can’t pretend the Switch 2 edition wasn’t direly needed. Developers are moving forward at a pace that was unsustainable for the Switch. Games like Cyberpunk 2077 or Street Fighter 6 or Yakuza 0 shine on the new console. Nintendo’s upcoming titles show me they feel freed from the hardware shackles of the Switch 1. That is a good thing. The Switch 2 won’t be outdated in 5 years as much as the Switch 1 was.

If you’re an artist, you can’t live with a compromised creative vision for the rest of your life - Eventually, you need better tools. And for players like me, the Switch 2 answers all my dreams and then some - It makes all my Switch 1 games run flawlessly, and opens the gateway to an amazing new library to explore. It’s expensive, but it’s worth the price in my opinion, and the same is true for millions of players around the world. Because of that I think denouncing the console as unnecessary is just a bit goofy.

And before anyone else does this, I’m not excusing $80 games or game key cards or $10 tech demo. I have legitimate gripes with the console and Nintendo, and I refuse to buy Mario Kart World at its price point. But I think the Switch 2 hardware is brilliant, and I can finally experience the games I love better than ever before.

Headcanoning Persona 5 characters Mariokart mains, because I'm funny and I have way too much time to think about dumb things

Ren mains Shy Guy, usually green because he loves Kakyoin from JJBA. Mute City F-Zero is also his favorite Mariokart 8 track because of this.

Akechi doesn't really play Mariokart unless he's roped in by the group, so he never really had a main. The others kept throwing out suggestions for him to pick, and he kept shooting them down for various contrived reasons, only giving in because Futaba was the loudest and most obnoxious one shouting "Pick Yoshi". That's the day he became the Yoshi main.

Yusuke mains King Boo, and was extremely baffled and confused when Futaba blurted out "only sluts play King Boo" (Ann couldn't help but laugh at that).

Futaba would only play either Luigi or Waluigi, depending on her mood. Either way, she's a memelord about it.

Haru would be Daisy, because she's iconic and also they're very similar. Makoto pointed it out and Haru has picked Daisy every time ever since.

Morgana always picks Mario, but not just any Mario. Specifically Tanooki Mario. Everyone gave him a look, but he acted like this was perfectly normal behavior. If anyone brings up the resemblance, he will get extremely defensive.

Sumire almost exclusively played Rosalina, until one day she decided to pick Toadette out of nowhere. The group was kind of surprised, and she explained that she thinks it's cute, and never went back.

Zenkichi keeps refusing to play, and only gives in because Sumire is a sweetheart who suggests that he match her and pick Toad. He does, and it's funny as hell.

And finally, Sophia would pick Princess Peach, specifically Cat Peach with the pink car because it matches the colors. Before that she was just going to make a Mii of herself reluctantly, but Ann showed her Cat Peach and her eyes just lit up.
