My headcanon for Mario and DK's post-Movie friendship is that they are mutually aware of their daddy issues and parallel struggles and whatnot, but rather than ever talking about it with one another, they instead punch stuff together. Or aggressively work out together. Just generally go full meathead together.

Oh definitely. It’s something that stays in the back of both their minds which upkeeps (some) mutual respect between the two, but there’s never a banter-free moment or just straight nuisance behavior on DK’s end.

I like to think that they CONSTANTLY debate over the stupidest things, and sometimes they get too passionate about the topic that it becomes a near-screaming match. It concerns people around them, but nah it’s just their dynamic lol. Then they’re like “yea cya tomorrow bro”

How do you feel about DK? (either in general or his relationship w/ Mario)

I just generally think DK's hilarious.

He's the best fighter in his kingdom to the point that he's hailed as a celebrity, and yet he is so fantastically bitter about the fact that he got his ass kicked by a tiny inexperienced man in overalls. Which, frankly, is his own darn fault for being too self confident to use powerups during the fight.

Meanwhile Mario's just... existing. He doesn't even care much that he beat DK, to him it was merely a stepping stone to reach his brother. Mario is just like "good game" and goes out of his way to be nothing but nice, while the entire time the gorilla is FUMING. He desperately wants round two.

I also like the fact that they didn't really bond over any deep conversation or their shared daddy issues, but instead reached a mutual understanding by fighting a common enemy. It gives me hope that Mario and DK will maintain a frenemy vibe in the future, because the way they rub each other the wrong way is so legitimately funny.

On a side note... I also like how friendly DK was to Luigi after first meeting him? Like that accidentally-aggressive elbow nudge when Bowser got put into the jar.

It was a short interaction, but it gave me major "frat boy who makes sure the anxious kid feels included" vibes.

Nintendo Direct Thoughts

NEW MARIO & LUIGI GAME AND IT LOOKS FUCKING GORGEOUS!!! Love how well they've not just maintained but enhanced that signature artstyle. Also the idea of the Bros getting straight-up isekaied like that amuses me.

Fantasian and Memories in Orbit both look pretty cool. Might check them out.

DK Rerelease...well, at least it's something. And since they're including the 3DS levels it's technically a definitive edition so that's nice.

Loved that cheeky little bit at the end of the Dragon Quest III remake trailer "lol you really thought we'd skip the first two with a tagline like "the legacy begins?" anyway here's 1 and 2." Also it looks beautiful. Never been that interested in Dragon Quest but I might give it a shot.

Trying to remember the words from that Bowser song in the Mario movie and just singing “Smooth” by Rob Thomas by mistake

I would love to see the next Smash Bros. game (or any other fighting game, really) to have a rival system. Don't get me wrong, I love Ultimate's more personalized Classic Mode routes, but after playing Smash Remix, I want another gauntlet where the opponents are picked at random except for one of the last rounds where the opponent changes depending on the player's character. You pick Mario, either Bowser or Luigi await towards the end. Pick Ganondorf (a character who is infamously known for getting into the series through crunch development) and the rivals are villains like King K. Rool or a newcomer like Raven Beak (later additions with more deliberate designs). Picking Andy would have Marth, Robin, or Byleth at the end because both Advance Wars and Fire Emblem are turn-based strategies.

Come to think of it, the only platform fighter that I know with a rival system would be Shovel Knight showdown. Anyone know any others?

Best of 2023 Music #4: Jack Black “Peaches”

Sheer obsession can do wonders for many.

We’ve seen Bowser pine after Princess Peach for years as it’s the plot point of many Mario Games, with odyssey revolving around the wedding.

But Somehow, this year’s movie gave what nobody ever assumed would come from Bowser. A heartfelt ballad about his longing for something he wants and knows he’ll likely have to forcibly take.

And with Jack Black, ironically playing piano, well giving further life to this ballad, we get to see what many in gaming have known for years.

Bowser just needs to get over it.

But we still wouldn’t have one of the best songs of the year because of it, so keep longing Bowser it’ll serve us all the better.

SUM 22: Bowser shows off some unexpected skills on the piano as Jack Black gives a voice to an iconic character and his desire for domination. Peaches indeed.

Anyway once it got well and truly stuck in my wife's head and she was complaining about it after dropping him off this morning I helpfully pointed out that "peaches" and "penis" have the same number of syllables, and now she's mad at me for some reason? I hope Mario is willing to share his little brother custody of Luigi with Peach.

Honestly? That is everything I want out of a Luigi/Peach relationship. In their brief on-screen interactions, we got... Peach trying to protect Luigi:

"Mom friend" is already her neutral state, so I totally see that evolving into more of a "big sister" role as she becomes familiar with the full extent of Luigi's capabilities. But I think Mario will be more than happy to share custody.

Why do theses direct have to be so good recently ? It's too good !

Like, PAPER MARIO TTYD REMAKE !! Guys it's happening ! The gasp I made when I saw it, jus the first two notes of the beginning theme, loved that game ! And now, it's beautiful in HD, I looove it.

This, and we got Mario RPG's remake that looking pretty nice, the Mario vs Donkey Kong, the final booster pass that added more character than that what I expected, the Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, and finally that Princess Peach game !! I mean, it does look pretty easy and accessible to everyone, but that aside, what a charming game this look.

In short, I'm really hyped and happy.

Headcanoning Persona 5 characters Mariokart mains, because I'm funny and I have way too much time to think about dumb things

Ren mains Shy Guy, usually green because he loves Kakyoin from JJBA. Mute City F-Zero is also his favorite Mariokart 8 track because of this.

Ryuji once said "I bet Ann plays Princess Peach", and Ann was so offended by the assumption that every time she intentionally takes Bowser before Ryuji can, so he has to pick his second favorite (Donkey Kong) instead. She doesn't even dislike Peach necessarily, she just never played Peach and was feeling petty.

Now, technically Ryuji could always just pick Dry Bowser- but unfortunately for him, Makoto always picks Dry Bowser, so he has no choice but to pick Bowser Jr, and he would rather just keep Donkey Kong.

Akechi doesn't really play Mariokart unless he's roped in by the group, so he never really had a main. The others kept throwing out suggestions for him to pick, and he kept shooting them down for various contrived reasons, only giving in because Futaba was the loudest and most obnoxious one shouting "Pick Yoshi". That's the day he became the Yoshi main.

Yusuke mains King Boo, and was extremely baffled and confused when Futaba blurted out "only sluts play King Boo" (Ann couldn't help but laugh at that).

Futaba would only play either Luigi or Waluigi, depending on her mood. Either way, she's a memelord about it.

Haru would be Daisy, because she's iconic and also they're very similar. Makoto pointed it out and Haru has picked Daisy every time ever since.

Morgana always picks Mario, but not just any Mario. Specifically Tanooki Mario. Everyone gave him a look, but he acted like this was perfectly normal behavior. If anyone brings up the resemblance, he will get extremely defensive.

Sumire almost exclusively played Rosalina, until one day she decided to pick Toadette out of nowhere. The group was kind of surprised, and she explained that she thinks it's cute, and never went back.

Zenkichi keeps refusing to play, and only gives in because Sumire is a sweetheart who suggests that he match her and pick Toad. He does, and it's funny as hell.

And finally, Sophia would pick Princess Peach, specifically Cat Peach with the pink car because it matches the colors. Before that she was just going to make a Mii of herself reluctantly, but Ann showed her Cat Peach and her eyes just lit up.
