Little Muppet Sesame Things #8
Alan's reaction when he hears the smoke alarm going off. TV Tropes labeled this an "Oh Crap" moment and it's the perfect start of one of the moments that made me start to like Elmo.
Yes, the 9/11 episode of Sesame is gonna be heavily featured coming up.

Did you know that Maria on Sesame Street is originally from Puerto Rico. During season 11 in 1979, six episodes were dedicated to the cast visiting to meet Maria’s family
I think it now would be a perfect time for everyone to experience these episodes 💛
Also I just want to add that while the actress who played Maria, Sonia Manzano, is not from Puerto Rico, she has Puerto Rican parents.
I loved Maria

"Moving pictures..." Randall murmured in wonder, trying to picture what these "films" would be like-pictures strung together to create motion, with stories like those of plays...it sounded so fantastic that it couldn't possibly be real, and yet, he wanted it to be, and he wished he remembered at least these moments; sitting beside his bride in a dark room, hand in hand, watching their favorite stories play out on the silver screen.
How freeing it must've been in the future, to be able to be seen together, to love one another so openly, for all to see! These days, here in New Orleans, heads would turn if he and Emily were to be seen together; even if they played it off as merely platonic, perhaps even a burgeoning friendship, there would be much disapproval from all sides, but as ghosts? No one batted an eye! No one gave it a second thought! In death, matters such as race or social status, they just didn't matter anymore...
He could only hope it would be the same in life, as soon as they made it to California...
Kissing Emily's flaxen curls, he smiled softly, saying, "Well...I look forward to doing something similar when we're married-I hope that, as soon as we're settled in our new home, we can curl up in bed together and take turns reading scary stories to one another, or go on long walks through town on Sunday mornings, just as we did in the future..."
@beatingheart-bride
Randall's breath hitched at the touch of her Cupid's-bow lips against his bony hands, to say nothing of his heart fluttering at the notion that his presence made his bride's life, topsy-turvy though it was now, a little easier. It was all he could hope for; that after everything she'd been through (then and now), he could be a light for her, just as she'd been one for him.
Wanting to lighten the mood, to move away from this topic (even though she'd reassured him that she wasn't upset, he still didn't want to press it), he instead chose to ask her, "Tell me, darling, tell me about some of your happier memories from...the future. You've told me about all the parties Dorian threw, but what did we do together?"
Although the idea of living in an attic, the very place their lives came to an end, sounded a bit morbid to him (though, perhaps, ghosts had a different perspective on that sort of thing?), he loved what Emily had told him so far, how cozy they made their little home together, turning it from a mere storeroom to a place all their own, adding their own personal touches to it. It was an unusual place to call home, sure, but it was theirs, and all she'd told him about it, it sounded really quite lovely-it sounded like they made some wonderful memories there.
#((it did! classic universal horror was my first brush with the genre; and i loved it))#((and i defidently think my parents were a big help in that love; as well as my sympathy for monsters!))#((and margaret hamilton sounded like a lovely woman! she loved kids and her episode on 'sesame street'))#((is genuinely sweet-it was missing for ages until be recently recovered; and i'm glad))#((as; again; it is genuinely sweet; partly because of her effort to assure kids there was nothing to be afraid of))#((-i think she did a similar episode of 'mr. rogers' that explained acting-))#((but the fact that oscar the grouch had a crush on the witch is cute to me!))#((she seemed like a lovely woman; and it reminds me of boris karloff))#((who also loved children and didn't want to frighten the young girl playing maria in 'frankenstein'))#((when he was in his makeup; but she actually went right up to him and asked if they could ride to set together!))#((so defidently some shared dna there; i think!))#((and she and june would've totally been good friends; i agree! also if i'm not mistaken))#((judy garland would also babysit margaret's son when they were working on 'wizard of oz' together!))#((which in itself is very sweet; but even sweeter given their friendship on the set!))#outofhatboxes#beatingheart-bride#V:Days of Future Past

Little Muppet Sesame Things #49
Let me start by saying that I didn't grow up with Mr. Hooper. I was born in 86 so his passing was three years before I was even a thought. I did have Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, so I did know who he was. It ended up being many years later that I learned more about who he was and this episode. I don't remember how I learned of this or even when I first found the clip of Big Bird being told what death was, but even still... This moment. This Episode.
Continuing on where I left off, the whole build up was well done. Big Bird passing out the drawings (all wonderfully done by Caroll Spinney himself) and wondering where Mr. Hooper is so he could give the drawing to him. He's not at the store? Then where is he? Then, Maria drops the Whammist of Wham Lines in all children's media at that time:
"Big Bird, don't you remember? Mr. Hooper died. He's dead."
I sometimes wonder how kids reacted when they were watching this for the first time.
Then came the explanation from Susan, that when people die, they don't come back. Big Bird's little broken "Ever?" is like being stabbed in the heart with an icicle.
We also see how the adults - and the actors and actresses themselves - are also processing the passing of Mr. Hooper - Will Lee. The wounds are still fresh with David barely keeping it together when he reveals he's now in charge of Hooper and Bob being in tears as he talks about remembering him, even though it won't be the same without him. These are their real emotions, not fake ones.
Of course, this is Big Bird's moment. He's just a kid who lost an important part of his life and he's got tons of big feelings inside. He confused, he's upset, he's hurt. he's angry. Why does it have to be this way?! Give him one good reason!
Like with Gordon explaining divorce to Elmo and Rosita, it falls on him to give an answer to Big Bird's question. "It has to be this way... because. (...) Just because", a reference to an earlier scene where Big Bird gave a similar answer for why he's walking weird. I do love that Susan is the one to urge him to say something with the little shoulder tap. I also love Bob and Maria giving each other silent comfort.
The fact this was all in one take is incredible. They had tried, but no one could keep it together to do a second take. They were all grieving and grieving together as family.
I'd love to think that the frame the picture is in was made by Luis and Maria. I also love that, even with all the changes to the set and to Big Bird's area, that framed drawing still remains there after all this time.
There it is, right on that little cupboard by Big Bird's head with the picture of Radar. Always there as a memory of someone gone, but never forgotten. That's whats wonderful about things like photos, videos, drawings, or keepsakes featuring someone that's passed. They're never gone as long as you have something to remember them by.
And no matter how many years pass, Mr. Hooper lives on with that drawing and his store, plus the many memories people have of him. Plus with youtube and people sharing episodes, a whole new generation will know about him and hopefully love him as so many kids have had before them.
