Shadow dies during the escape attempt instead of Maria. G.U.N quickly went into coverup mode arresting Gerald and shutting down the lab. They faked Marias death and sent her to an orphanage with a fake identity until they could determine if she was a threat. Maria played the part of innocent little girl while fueling her resentment toward G.U.N for killing Shadow. (I like to think all Movie verse Robotniks have great capacity for villainy given sufficient tragedy) She studied everything she could to plan her revenge eventually aging out of the orphanage and dropping off the grid to start gathering resources to create her machines. She created Shade to help her get her revenge and send a message to G.U.N. (He name is Shade because he is a part of a shadow.)

Dr Ivo Robotnik is only a year into his contract with G.U.N when he is tasked with creating defenses against a roboticist only known in G.U.N databases as Maria. Little did either party know this would be the start of a long standing feud between two archenemies.

(Maria is still sick, she has to falsify records to get treatment while staying off G.U.N's radar. I like to headcannon that every Robotnik has a field of study that they just cant master no matter how hard they try, especially a field that would significantly help them. Ivo's field is psychology and Marias is neurology)

G.U.N Commander Report - Project [REDACTED] - Status: CANCELED

Due to the premature termination of the specimen, [REDACTED], during an event detailed in attachment 1; Project [REDACTED] has been canceled on orders from Commander [REDACTED]. Current contracted scientist are to be temporarily re-assigned to [REDACTED] base until permanent re-assignment can occur. Further action is required to the status of Dr Gerald [REDACTED] and Maria [REDACTED] following the previously referenced event. Dr Gerald [REDACTED] is currently held at [REDACTED] base pending Commander decision. Maria [REDACTED] has two guardians not associated with Project [REDACTED] or G.U.N. Due to Maria [REDACTED]’s age and affiliation with Project [REDACTED] recommended action is to notify Maria [REDACTED]’s guardians that she is deceased and relocate her to G.U.N affiliated Orphanage [REDACTED] until a re-evaluation at a future date.

Maria lives AUs are always fun to me, and I'm not the first to want her to have turned out kinda evil, lmao. Girlie deserves to be a little unhinged, as a treat <3

Disorganised thoughts below the cut if anyone's interested:

This started out as a more Shadow-centric Sonic Prime concept, in which it is a universal constant for one of the ARK trio to die tragically, causing the other two to spiral horribly. This time around, it's Gerald who gets gunned down.

Uhhh one thing leads to another and Shadow goes berserk, ripping the invading GUN agents to shreds. Maria is fresh out of her first (hopefully curative) blood transfusion with Shadow, and feeling some weird side effects, has just lost the only member of her family she has memories of. So she isn't feeling particularly merciful anyway.

And someone threatens to use the Eclipse Cannon if GUN tries another raid, so GUN backs off since and just decides it's safer to leave them alone with minimal contact and hope the problem resolves itself.

It doesn't, obviously.

Turns out those blood transfusions give her a degree of Shadow's chaos abilities, and have made her functionally immortal. She still deals with her chronic condition, but her body just refuses to age. There's some other fun effects in there too :3c

It also comes with some slight corruption of her personality, but that could also be down to trauma and her newfound resentment towards humanity. She still loves earth, just wants to rid it of the pestilence caused by humanity.

So 50 years on, her and Shadow are likely the only remaining souls aboard the ARK, and she's been putting that big Robotnik brain of hers to use developing not only medical support gear for herself, but also "tools" to help in their mission to "free the world".

The end goal was for her to succeed, since the idea of Maria succeeding where her cousin Ivo couldn't is fun to me. Get girlbossed, idiot. But inevitably Sonic shows up and wins the day n all that.

Looks Can Be Deceiving ~ Swap!Au

Shadow could never get used to being considered “the older sibling” (but it gives Shadow opportunities to make fun of her 🤣)

It was fun, and Sonic was quickly making fast friends with Maria. She was bright and endlessly curious in a way that reminded him of Tails and Amy. Shadow, however, remained fairly cold towards him, and it was clear he was only tolerating his presence for Maria’s sake, but Sonic didn’t mind since his grumpy attitude just made him fun to tease. He was mentally keeping record of all the times his cornier jokes made the dark hedgehog’s eye twitch.

However, their fun would quickly come to an end when a large machine suddenly seemed to fall out of the sky right behind them.

Shadow darted so he was between the robot and Maria, only to tense as another robot suddenly appeared at their front.

Sonic was quick to cover them and wondered why Eggman would be attacking now.

Only… these weren’t Badniks. They lacked any of Eggman’s usual design flares and instead had a symbol set onto their shoulders.

“Huh, I wonder what has GUN in a tizzy,” Sonic said, still on the defense. It didn’t matter if it was Eggman or GUN. If there were robots threatening innocent people, he wasn’t about to just stand by and let it happen.

“They found us,” Shadow hissed angrily.

Sonic cast a glance back at him and Maria. “They’re after you? Why?”

“For existing,” Shadow said bitterly. 

“PRISONERS, SURRENDER OR BE INCINERATED!” the GUN robot said in a cold, automated tone.

So, I happen to be co-writing another Sonic fic with The_Freaky_One2325. It's called Live and Learn, and it explores what might have happened if Maria survived and was frozen alongside Shadow to awaken in the modern day. We call it the Spider-Maria AU due to a joke in the planning phase where we compared her to the Sonic version of Spider-Gwen. No, Maria does not actually have spider powers. the divergence point: shadow and maria lock themselves in a room instead of maria sending shadow to earth. they stay there until the GUN raid comes to find them

maria has time to hide, she's presumed dead. GUN won't leave until shadow's dealt with, he's forced to kill the invading GUN soldiers

he's never killed anyone before. this traumatizes him greatly.

he and maria are left as the last two alive on the ARK

maria still wants to believe in humanity, but- shadow is suffering. his quills are matted with blood and he's looking at her and asking what he just did because he can barely make sense of it himself.

that's shadow. her shadow. her baby brother. he didn't have a choice, and- GUN killed everyone, everyone she knew- this had to be the right thing to do. it had to be. maria tells him that. "you did the right thing. don't regret it."

they pick through the carnage and find that no one else survived. GUN failed to extract gerald, since shadow killed the GUN soldiers before they could take him back to earth.

maria is still sick. shadow is still here to be her cure. she's got the classic robotnik-brain and he's rather intelligent himself - maybe they can figure something out...

they stay on the ARK. she can't survive on earth, after all. and they work.

shadow ends up bitter towards humanity in the same way he is in canon. maria starts slipping into misanthropy too. after all, shadow didn't have a choice. GUN tried to kill everyone. almost succeeded, too. she sees the blood of her grandfather and all the scientists, she sees the way shadow is still tormented over his actions even though the GUN soldiers didn't even have a word to spare for the people they were gunning down, and she wonders what kind of world would allow this. what kind of humanity would do such a thing.

NEW AU TIME <3

While Eggman is trying to steal The Ultimate Weapon from G.U.N., he realizes 2 things:

1. The Ultimate Weapon is just another stinking hedgehog

2. His long-lost cousin (who was assumed to be killed on the ARK) has been stuck in cryosleep alongside said stinking hedgehog

Eggman may be a dastardly villain but he’s not evil enough to leave 2 kids behind!

This doesn’t follow any specific Sonic timeline or universe lmao it’s sort of an abomination of the things I like

It’s like kinda the same universe as SA2, but Stone has been thrown in from the movieverse and so has Sage from Frontiers, and I imagine them living in a more whimsical world like Mobius

Perhaps Eggman yoinked Maria and Shadow from Earth and brought them to Mobius

Also I like to think of Eggman’s relationship with Sonic and co. to be as cracked as it is in Sonic Boom, like he’s a villain but they’re chill
