(Also, I spent a joyful few hours today putting together a Ritual/Fusion-themed Deck from only my vast collection of loose YGO cards, because TPOFATGIF's mere existence put me back in touch with a long-dormant fandom and I'm SO HAPPY right now -- thanks much!)

I know that the point of all the terrible/absent parents in children's/young adult fiction is that they're being set aside from the narrative so the juvenile protagonists can shine and instill confidence in the reader to overcome challenges in life.

But I'm 33 now and this is my fic and I'm writing out my middle-aged Queer/ND fantasy of ADULTS WHO SHOW THE FUCK UP FOR THE KIDS WHEN NEEDED, so Mr. Don Kanonji is an important member of Team Ichigo. Namely, the Adult Supervision who knows how to file paperwork, occasionally say "Kids, that's illegal" and putting himself between them and Problems. Kon also gets a new narrative life, and Don takes over the Supervision of Karkura Town for him when Ichigo is away, along with Uryuu's Mom, who also got an excavator to her story and as one friend put it, "I can't believe you Un-fridged her by killing her like that??".

He was also an auditor for an accounting firm before he decided to quit, spend a few years in Europe as a fashion model*, and then stumbled into his televised ghost-hunting gig on accident, but that first job and his spiritual awareness mean Don Kanonji is the BANE of Kisuke Urahara's existence :)

He continues to be the Bane of Urahara's existence after the fic, because since he's already acquired this much spiritual ability in the living world (He's got a beam attack. Ichigo doesn't have a beam attack.) , he's stupid powerful once he passes on and enters Soul Society, and Now-Captain Rukia is still a fan, so he gets to continue to torment Urahara as a seated officer, if not an actual captain. :)

*that's canon actually.

Although it started out as a part of his Detective Prince persona that he donned for the world, he found himself enjoying the act of taking baths. Sitting in the water, with a small table besides on which he would have one of his newest mystery novels and a notebook for anything he might have on his mind. Finding it therapeutic to have a 7-step skincare routine. It's a time for him to collect his thoughts, thinking about what to do next. A radio is on (or maybe a record player?) with some jazz tunes. It's the one time that he has complete control over himself and takes the time to enjoy it, though at first he tried to self-criticize himself for it.

He becomes extremely protective over this secret, not wanting others to know that he actually does have a side like that. (He want's to keep people away, so why do they need to know this?)

When he starts opening up to the Phantom Thieves though, Ann can tell. At first she jokingly pesters him about it, since "wow when you were on TV you always looked so good, wanna trade secrets?" until she realizes that oh wait, there's something more here than just looking good for the cameras, huh? She doesn't pry though, when one day he snaps at her for coming too close to the truth.

He eventually comes around, when the world isn't threatening to end or get taken over, when these kids have time to be actual kids. Ann's boisterous personality is a bit to get used to, but soon enough they chat about their routines. Ann, Shiho, and Goro hanging out cuz they were all free. Ann giving him tips but leaving out the part in which the tips are all centered around Akiren cuz the guys wear their hearts on their fucking sleeves, and she knows a crush when she sees one.

The first time Akiren moves in with Goro, hearing him say "I'm going to take a bath" but not expecting for him to emerge from the bathroom, two hours later, looking like a pristine Greek sculpture. Akiren jokes about it, flustering Goro, who then makes a snide comment about the mop of black hair that "definitely needs to be checked for rats."

Honestly, I think Katara having her scars (let's say for arguments sake that she can't heal them either with normal waterbending or with the spirit water. I personally don't subscribe to the idea that the spirit water would have worked on Zuko's scar but anyway) would have enhanced the parallels and connection between her and Zuko. Besides, I don't think she would have bothered to use the spirit water on her own hands. She wouldn't have thought it important enough imo.

It's pretty obvious that she and Zuko, as Aang's main teachers of those respective elements, are meant to compliment and parallel one another. Both were learners themselves when they started teaching Aang (Zuko had to relearn firebending from a different source. After that he was virtually a master). Aang's proxy teacher (Pakku) for water came after Katara started teaching him waterbending. Aang's proxy teacher (Jeong Jeong) started teaching Aang firebending before Zuko started teaching him.

Zuko being burned and thus scarred by the Avatar's main adversary, while Katara would have been burned and thus scarred by the Avatar. Heck, even the incidents themselves parallel one another in ways. Ozai purposefully burned his son's face and had no feelings of love or affection for him at all. Aang burned Katara on accident and definitely cared for Katara deeply.

In truth I don't think that her having scars would change the dynamics between her and either Zuko or Aang. She would do her best not to acknowledge them around Aang (coddling him as she always does) while with Zuko she could probably get him to open up about how he got his. Seriously is anyone else mad that Team Avatar never learns about how Zuko got his scar? I doubt he mentioned it to Katara or anyone else. :/

As promised, a meat recommendation! If you're from Pennsylvania, you already know it, it's scrapple!

I was introduced to this dish when I was in college! One of my meat science professors was from that state, and he wanted to teach the processed meats class I was in how to make it. It's actually a pretty interesting dish! Leftover pork meat and pork offal are ground up, mixed with spices, buckwheat flour/cornmeal/wheat flour, and water. It's cooked down and put in to loaf pans so you get that loaf shape. It's sold fully cooked, so you could eat it as is when you buy it, but it's traditionally served sliced thin and pan fried on both sides to get that nice crispy crust. I like to eat mine with maple syrup! It's a nice contrast of sweet and savory, I think.

At one of my previous jobs, I worked in a pork packing plant in Pennsylvania, so we made this! It would be served in the cafeteria as one of the breakfast options, and they would DEEP FRY the slices. They were nice and crispy then!

I think what I like so much about this product is the whole thought process that went into making it, so the packer/butcher shop owner could make money from inexpensive parts of the hog. It is literally made of the leftover parts of the hog that no one wants to eat by themselves (hearts, livers, kidneys). Also, the flours and meals added to extend the product tends to be pretty cheap compared to the meat. The water added as well is also pretty inexpensive. It's a way to create value out of parts of the hog that people would normally not eat, while making it tasty (in my opinion) too! It's problem solving at the meat butchery level!

I know some people might read/look at this and think "gross!!", but I just think it's neat (insert Marge Simpson potato meme here). I also have some good memories that I associate with scrapple when I was going to school and when living in Pennsylvania. ALSO, we have this new thing going on at my work where all the food labs get together and discuss what's happening in our labs each month. The R&D director said that he's open to suggestions to showcase interesting food products in our industry at the end of the meeting. I suggested this to my boss and he didn't like it, probably because he thinks it's gross or something. This is my little "fuck you" to him (that he will never see since he is a straight white man who has no idea what Tumblr is).

Gender Alignment is Sort of like Coffee

(an essay under the cut)

It’s not uncommon in trans spaces - especially nonbinary spaces - to hear the phrase “gender alignment”. You might hear something like being masc-aligned, fem-aligned, or unaligned. You might even hear about being aligned with genders, like being agender-aligned or xeno-aligned. What are these alignments that everyone is talking about?

Gender alignment is simply a connection to a gender without actually being that gender. It’s like an added layer to one’s identity. Let’s say you have a hot cup of coffee (if that’s your thing.) That coffee can be any kind of flavor - vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, pumpkin spice - but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s still coffee. The flavor is just an extra bonus. In this case, gender is the coffee and alignment is the flavor. Unflavored coffee, therefore, would be an unaligned coffee.

This idea can work for tea if that’s more palatable to you. Tea can come in a number of varieties - green tea, black tea, whatever - and it’s still tea just the same, but it can come in many flavors. You can add the flavor or it can come pre-flavored. Either way, the flavor is an added part to the tea, which represents gender. This can work with other food items as well - cupcakes with sprinkles, cakes with frosting, even a pizza with toppings - and anything considered “plain” would simply be unaligned.

Gender alignment is common in nonbinary spaces where it originated, but anyone of any gender can have an alignment. Someone might be entirely genderless but feel a connection to femininity. They don’t see themselves as a woman or anything close to the concept, but they feel connected to femininity. They might call themselves a fem-aligned agender person. Someone else may be an aporine-aligned man, meaning ey might align emself with abinary concepts outside of male and female, but are still a man just the same.

This also works for genders rather than gender qualities. For example, a person might be a woman but sie also relates to a lot of xenogenders. Sie might call hirself a xeno-aligned woman. Sie’s not xenogender, just aligned with the concept. Someone else could be maverique and also agender-aligned, meaning he is aligned with concepts related to genderlessness without feeling like he doesn’t have a gender.

How does this differ from simply having an interest in a gender concept? Personally, I have a gender hoard, and it’s full of genders I don’t identify as but that I identify with. But why don’t I consider myself aligned with them? The answer is simply that I don’t incorporate them into my identity. They aren’t an intrinsic part of my gender experience and they don’t have any influence on how I navigate gender, it’s just an interest that I have in them. You could have a whole hoard of genders, but not consider yourself aligned with any of them because you simply see them as interesting. It’s the Marge Simpson meme of “I just think they’re neat.” Someone else might hoard some genders that they align themselves with (though they might just say they are poly-aligned to make the concept easier to express.)

Navigating and expressing gender is entirely an individualistic experience and one’s alignment (or lack thereof) can vary from person to person. No one gender is automatically aligned with something and not everyone with a gender has an alignment, but many people will have a variety of different alignments depending on what gender means for them. It’s a concept that’s just as complex as gender itself and it comes in many different flavors.
