App Review: The Latest and Fastest WAZE to Get Around Town

It’s 4:45pm on the Friday of a long weekend and you’ve decided to treat your family to an awesome night at one of Toronto’s most popular attractions, Ripley's Aquarium of Canada.  You also have a coupon for a whopping 50% off ticket prices BUT it is only valid until 6:00pm TODAY.  What do you do??  How will you ever make it through Toronto’s heavy, frustrating downtown rush hour traffic?!  More importantly, what app are you going to use to get there the FASTEST?

Introducing Waze.

Step aside Google Maps and Apple Maps, this new app is not only incredibly easy and friendly to use, but it provides real-time updates backed by an entire social community (consisting of other Waze users).  The result is an interactive, more importantly flexible, solution to our everyday driving problems.

Task: Find the directions for the quickest route to Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada.

As a person that is always on-the-go (as most urban students and professionals are today), my expectations and success criteria for the experience are:

It needs to be easy – 1-5 number of clicks

It needs to be quick – 15-30 secs

Info needs to be accurate

Info updates need to be communicated on a real-time basis (so I am informed and can make adjustments as necessary)

1. Type “Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada” in the search bar.  (See photo #1)

The main screen is a simple map showing you where you are, along with a search bar at the top.  As you start typing, the autocomplete suggestions begin popping up.  Before you choose your selection, you have the option to access a Preview screen, which shows more relevant info about the destination (e.g. phone number, website, opening hours). (See photo #2)

Click “GO” when you are ready to choose your routes.

2. Click “Routes” and choose your desired path. (See photo #3)

This screen will become your best friend.  It highlights the three best routes you can take while providing all the necessary comparison info (see photo #4), including:

Travel time

Distance

Traffic congestion (yellow to red scale depending on volume of cars)

Any police, accidents, construction, etc. reported by other users (see photo #5 for a full list of other possible reports)

Select your desired path and voilà!

3. Re-route your path anytime!

This is where the app becomes awesome.  You can access the previous “Routes” screen again at any time by clicking on the info box at the bottom of the screen (see photo #6), and the info is automatically updated on a real-time basis.  

Based on this, you can re-route and choose a quicker path if yours becomes stagnant.  So if any accidents or unexpected traffic congestion comes up, you have the ease and flexibility to quickly re-route, all within 1-2 clicks.  Waze also “learns” your preferred routes overtime and suggests them as alternatives.

Bonus: Customize your Voice. (See photo #7)

With Waze, one neat customization is the voice setup.  You can choose to have celebrities (e.g. Rob Gronkowski, Neil Patrick Harris) “speak” to you and provide you with directions, instead of a standard robot voice.  This added touch is great for long road trips!

I was extremely impressed with my Waze experience and it met all my success criteria.  I would definitely recommend this to any drivers in need of a new map app!  Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, here we come!
