HMMMMMMMM (<- thinking about an au really really hard)
#ā.txt#so basically i partially stole the idea from one of my old mys fanfics#but anyways#dante wakes up in the middle of falling out of the sky. he doesnt remember anything (not even his own name) besides the name gene#(gene also experiences the same thing but can only remember dantes name. both are in completely different places at the start and dont see#each other for a bit tho)#dante also has wings (gene does as well) - dantes are black while genes are white#anyways. dante falls to the ground and somehow doesnt break anything despite the fact that he was falling super fucking fast#travis garroth and laurance were nearby and they ran over when they heard dante hit the ground very loudly#when they see dante they all run over. he sort of recognizes them but doesnt remember their names#theyre all trying to figure out what the fuck is going on. why did dante disappear 2 days before the apocalypse and then reappear like 3#months later? why cant he remember anything? why does he have wings now? does this have to do with the apocalypse?#many questions and so little answers#meanwhile gene was found by sasha and zenix. they all have similar questions#i have a Vague Idea where this is all going but its not cohesive enough to put into words#but ya ok i want to draw dante in this au now so i will Attempt that š

i saw this tweet and found it interesting for two reasons. one is that some people base how good cartoon network would be to toh by how it treated su, and despite the fact that suās treatment by the network was considered poor at the time, now its thought to be exceptionally good in comparison to modern shows.
two is how exactly su got impacted by a limited budget. a common criticism is how characters like connie, peridot, and lapis are left out of missions. but balancing a lot of characters is not only hard but also costly (extra animation, extra voicesāitās been revealed that the show is limited to a set number of characters per episode otherwise theyāre over budget). animation mistakes are not uncommon since retakes cost extra. the entire reason the original show got cut short was due to loss of funding!
#i donāt know if pay rates differ per networks#but a.ivi and s.urrashu have said that they needed to work outside of su in order to make sufficient funds#it only makes me wonder what other ways su suffered from a lower budget#that we as the audience never got to see#in the vein of the too-little characters complaint#another part of that is that low-stakes episodes shouldāve been abt the main cast instead of the townies#like last one out of beach city and too short to ride vs restaurant wars and kikiās pizza delivery service#i definitely see that especially since that isnāt budget related#nor would it seem to be network related (even if cn had an āepisodic episodesā quota it could still be abt the gems#(another side note: /would/ cn even have a requirement that the show make episodes that can be watched standalone?#this is a question for the people who were around when su was airing#what episodes often got rerun?#was it the townie eps or the lore eps?#for example i heard that su once did a āperidot eventā where they just reran peridot episodes#which had eps that skip around in the show#did they even care about airing the story so that it made sense anyways?#id get it if the low stakes townie episodes were the ones getting rerun))#but i have such a boring view on that which is i think itās simply because the creators like townie eps#like in interviews r.ebecca s.ugar has said sheās the type to be really invested in background characters#answers in interviews have been crafted in ways to hide whatās really going on though tbf#prime example of this is rebecca and ian saying the wedding being interrupted was meant to follow the common trope#when later in the art book they said that it was bc cn rejected the ep bc it āwasnāt interesting enoughā#both could simultaneously be true! itās a psychology thing though where people make up nice-sounding explanations behind what they create#in retrospect because they want it to be thought out in such a nice way they believe in it#the bigger problem is that not matter how many episodes there are of them#it can be hard for ppl to be invested in the townies the same way they are invested in the main cast#iām sure that a million writers have made surefire advice on how to get an audience to care about characters#but off the top of my head i think itās because 1. most donāt have strong motivations to get truly invested in#(exception is ronaldo but people find him too annoying to care about him)#okay i had more points and explanations but i hit the tag limit and idk if anyone is actually reading this so bye

#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#bonus comic#tulu xuanwu#lan sizhui#Thank you Stackedbirds for the inspiration behind this comic!#The original plan was that they would kill the turtle - only for it to be revealed there was little baby turtles she was protecting#and those turtles left the cave to then be chilling in a river by yi-city 20 years later.#This version has less turtle death and is way more straightforward.#But yes; A-Qing's turtle was always supposed to be linked to the tulu xuanwu. I enjoy call-backs and set-ups immensely.#What other creatures does LSZ have in his sleeve pockets? What other endangered beasts have been accidently translocated?#Will the turtle ever make an appearance again? So many questions. Which I will now answer:#1) At least one rabbit and a few songbirds have made a permanent home in there.#2) I like to think all the cultivators leaving baoshan sanren's mountain are accidently translocated endangered creatures.#3) Yes. The tulu xuanwu will be pivotal presence in the climax of the story. Dare I say - the hero of the darkest hour.
