...until he witnesses the way P and Venigni interact. Having been one himself, he knows what a man in love looks like, and he sees it in the both of them. At first he only noticed the similarities between P and Carlo but the longer he observed him, he starts seeing all the many differences, too.

Carlo is dead and P is someone else. Romeo doesn't think he can ever move on from his feelings, even after this revelation, but at least he can see P happy...so he'll stay at his side no matter what. Even if it's farther from his side than he would have liked.
