Curious observer, not interferer

Ups and downs of La'an's relationship with Spock as seen through Manu's eyes.

Just something that came to me last night at 2am when I couldn't sleep. (This is 3k words of character study and maybe 200 words of dialogue.)

Genuinely going insane over Manu noonien singh. He's a highschooler. He's dead. He haunts the narrative. He died for his little sister and now she's going to live multiple times his life span. He died for his little sister and now she's killing the monsters that killed him.

Imagine you're like 7(?) And your parents have another kid and you grow up and she steals your stuff and annoys you and then suddenly the fucking boogeyman are real and you're life is falling apart and you're in a horror film but you also have one(1) little girl who needs you because you're all she knows and all she has left.

And you die for her. And she lives.

He literally haunts her. She sees his ghost and he smiles at her. Does he know how much she appreciates him now. Can he feel how desperate she is? Did he ever consider that even though la'an was small and scared she would have done the same for him? Did he consider she'll spend the rest of her life wishing she could trade places with him?????

Spock – full name generally considered unpronounceable by Humans – was a male Human/Vulcan hybrid who lived during the 23rd and 24th century, who became one of the most distinguished and respected figures in the United Federation of Planets. As a Starfleet officer in the 23rd century, Spock served aboard the starship USS Enterprise as science officer under Captain Christopher Pike, as first officer and science officer under Captain James T. Kirk, and as the commanding officer of the Enterprise during its tenure as a training ship. (+) La'an Noonien-Singh was born December 8, 2228 on Alpha I to Sa'an and Ronu Noonien-Singh. She also had a brother named Manu. La'an and her family were descendants of Khan Noonien Singh, the Augment tyrant who once ruled a quarter of Earth's population during the Eugenics Wars. In 2259, Lieutenant Noonien-Singh was assigned to the USS Enterprise as acting first officer following Chin-Riley's disappearance. She didn't tell Captain Pike she knew Una, fearing he wouldn't accept her for the mission. He nonetheless offered her a position on his ship after Una's rescue and La'an became permanent chief of security of the Enterprise. (+)

If the cliffhanger ending of “Hegemony” isn’t the perfect opportunity and set-up for SNW to cast Lewis Tan as Manu Noonien-Singh, retcon his “death”, and have him show up in part II to help save the crew of the Enterprise, I don’t know what is.

The first time Sera met Manu, he was sixteen and she was thirteen. “This is the enemy. Never forget that,” her mother informed her, ushering a black-haired, dirty-faced teenage boy into their home before unceremoniously forcing him to his knees on the decorated, mosaic floor of the atrium. He wore a simple black uniform, soiled and torn, its only splash of color the metallic silver of the zips and the bronze-gold shoulder pads — and, of course, the circular insignia sewn onto the sleeve of his upper arm. It read the words: SS Puget Sound.  Sera, who had been studying Federation starships as part of her schooling and by extension cultural indoctrination, did not recognise the name.  “Yes, Mother,” is what Sera said, but what she actually thought was: He doesn’t look like the enemy. He looks like us. A southerner, that was. He lacked the distinctive forehead ridges to be compared to a northerner. The only other differences between the two of them, Sera noted, was that his ears were round instead of elegant and pointed, and that his skin was absent of any green undertone, which indicated that his blood must not be copper based.  The boy looked up at her, then. His body trembled slightly, but defiance burned hot in his brown eyes. Whatever he was afraid of, Sera deduced, it certainly wasn’t them.  “Ah, excellent! Most excellent indeed,” her father exclaimed as he came walking into their stately home, wearing his blue-grey senator’s robes. “I see that you have met Manu. He is to be our new household servant and my imperial cupbearer.” “You mean our new servi privati,” her mother corrected, looking down her nose at Manu with a stern, disapproving look. “Well… I, for one, would much rather look at his face all day than a Reman’s,” Sera remarked. She then moved towards Manu and took him by the arm, not ungently, pulling him to his feet. He was a good few inches taller than she was and Sera now had to tilt her head to look up at him. “Come with me,” Sera instructed, leading Manu away from her parents, who doubtless had words to exchange — heated from her mother and diplomatic from her father — about taking a Hevam boy into their service. Her words as much a guise to escape being dragged into the political debate as much as it was to sate her own burgeoning curiosity about the boy who now purposefully walked beside her.

The Romulan Way: a prime timeline variation inspired by MKS57's fic in which the ritual of "the last one" is actually the last male and female, except where La'an's Mark IV liferaft drifted into Federation space, Manu's drifted into Romulan space instead.

What is this brief mortal life if not the pursuit of legacy?

Manu will fly north. First to Gonar to remind those reptiles that man is the apex predator of the galaxy, and then to Qo'noS to deliver our terms to Chancellor L'Rell. Meanwhile, La'an will accompany me on my journey to Vulcan where I will personally treat with Ambassador Sarek myself. We must remind these aliens of the oaths they swore. And... the cost of breaking them.

I started out on Hunhau working at the Serene Squall’s private salvage yard as a scrapper, but I was more trouble there than I was worth, so Remy sold my contract to Osferth instead. His idea of debt slave labor for ‘rescuing me’ was putting me in the ring. I’ve been working the fight circuit ever since.”
