Asuka Tenjoin from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX & Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V is now available as a somewhat active muse! For GX she is slight canon divergent (the major canon divergences on default I have for her is she does not join the Society of Light, even after losing to Manjoume) and headcanon expanded, and for Arc-V she is a canon complement and headcanon expanded.

Her is also orientation is bi btw!

i had a perfect idea for a stormshipping fic and i might not write it as a full idea but i will try my best so here it goes

have you ever heard The Apocalypse 13th? it’s a wonderful vocaloid song by HitoshizukuxYama and it slaps. the plot of this fic would be the same as this song, so lemme run it by y’all real quick

a princess is sleeping in a tower. a prince finds her in his dream, and the two fall in love. the two don’t care how or why, all they know is each other now. the song continues to state how cursed the princess is, and makes a point of the two’s fates being intertwined and predetermined. despite being in a dream, the prince vows to find her. the princess awaits her love, and they both stress that he has to find her before “[100 years of sleep]” breaks. emphasis is again placed on how the truth has been lost over a century, and how the princess is cursed. after all his travels, the prince finally finds the princess. he awakens her with a kiss, and her first spoken words to the prince are…

“now, you have to kill me!”

YEAH. so it turns out, the princess was cursed in being the apocalypse the whole time. she’d been sleeping to prevent it from happening. the two of them decide that even if they can’t be together in reality, they’ll still love each other in their dreams. they jump from the tower, and end the apocalypse.

so, pretty tragic, right? but how is it a stormshipping fic?

GX Character Names - an in-depth analysis

(i promise there's more substance than you think)

⇀ yūki jūdai (遊城 十代)

« yū (遊) - play, enjoyment » « ki (城) - castle »

The yū (遊) uses the same kanji that all the other Yu-tagonists have, but it's probably more relevant to Judai than any other protagonist. 遊 is a particle with many associations, most notably play and games, but also enjoyment, freedom, travel, and hedonism. All the protagonists play children's card games, but Judai is the one who most treats it like a children's card game, even when he shouldn't. His signature phrase is literally "That was a fun duel!"

The ki (城) kanji means castle and could be a slight nod to his past life, but more importantly, yūki is a homophone of 勇気, meaning courage and fighting spirit -- fitting for his hero theming and pure shonen protag energy.

« jū (十) - ten » « dai (代) - generation »

First of all, there's a fun connection with the first character of Judai's name meaning 10, to the first character of Manjoume's name being 10,000, as well as the Tenjoin siblings phonetically having 'ten' in their name (Fubuki even references it by signing his name '10join').

The second character dai (代) is fitting given the name of the show. The G in GX stands for "Generation." And the X stands for "neXt," but get this -- X is also 10 in roman numerals.

That's right... Judai's name is literally GX.

It goes deeper though. The more blatant meaning is that taken together, 十代 means adolescence, or teenager (it has similar etymology to the latter, something like "the tens ages"). But jūdai is also a homophone of 重大 - serious, grave, of great importance. That's it, those are literally the themes of the show in one name.

GX is ultimately a coming of age story. Judai is a kid who just wants to play games and have fun, but over the course of the show, is forced to give up that childish simplicity in the face of adult responsibility. He starts off believing that being a hero is just about courage and shonen ideals, and learns though grave consequences that it's not, and that being a hero isn't fun at all.

⇀ manjoume jun (万丈目 準)

« man (万) - ten-thousand » « jou (丈) - height, strong » « me (目) - eye, seeing »

This is where the 1, 10, 100, 1000 chant comes from. Combined with the second character, it feels grandiose and ego-inflated, then when you add on the final character, me (目), associated with seeing, the vibe you get is something like "looking down on (from a height of 10,000)." All of which makes his insistence on being called Manjoume-san even more conceited, but also gives you an idea of how the Manjoume family name looms over Manjoume himself.

« jun (準) - semi, secondary »

In contrast to his family name, his given name shows us the other side of Manjoume's character. jun has several kanji spellings with positive and auspicious meanings. One of them, 潤 (to profit, to become wealthy), would have been an obvious choice for our rich boy. 

But no, instead they chose 準, a kanji with a meaning that can be difficult to pin down. It's associated with preparation and reserves, such as reserve funds (準備金) -- in other words, being the back-up, extraneous. In the workforce, it indicates assistants, associates, juniors (準会員, 準社員). It's part of the words for semi-finals (準決勝) and runner-up (準優勝). Ultimately, it's a character that carries a meaning of being secondary.

Underneath all that snobby pomp, Manjoume feels inferior to his brothers, and can also never win against Judai, and this drives his character arc. The tension between his last and first names, of "looking down on" and "being secondary," is emblematic of Manjoume's internal conflict.

This is driven in even further by the fact that his brothers have first names that complement their last name. The first character of his oldest brother's name, Chosaku (長作), means leader, senior, or superiority (which directly parallels the meaning of associate for Jun, and also fits with Chosaku being a businessman), but it's also phonetically the same as 兆 which means one trillion, basically exaggerating upon the 10,000 of his last name.

Meanwhile his middle brother Shoji's name (正司) starts with the character associated with truth and lawfulness (ironic considering he's a slimy politician), was archaically used to mean of higher rank in court (again paralleling Jun), and also has a niche meaning of 10 to the 40th power, or... 10,000 trillion trillion.

⇀ marufuji shou (丸藤 翔) and marufuji ryou (丸藤 亮)

« maru (丸) - circle, entirety, perfection » « fuji (藤) - wisteria »

Circles are significant symbols in Japanese culture, used in divination to represent completeness and perfection, and the kanji 丸 also carries this meaning. Wisteria is a cultural symbol too, representing love and longetivity, with a tie to royalty and nobility.

All together, the name rings as elegant and dignified. In season 1, we see how Shou feels pressured and unable to live up to the name he shares with his brother, who embodies it. Perfection is a key part of Ryou's character -- in the graduation duel, he even acknowledges that he has reached perfection, but also that it is a limit, setting up for the deconstruction of the theme.

« shou (翔) - to soar »

Shou's name simply represents his character arc, starting from Osiris Red with no confidence in himself, and ending in Obelisk Blue, surpassing his brother who has an opposite arc of "falling." It's also a homophone of 小 meaning small or younger.

« ryou (亮) - clear, brightness »

The kanji used for Ryou's name is part of words like moonlight (亮月), rightfulness (亮直), as well as words associated with royalty, like mourning the emperor (亮闇). All of which vaguely match the tone of Ryou's character as "the Kaiser." The Cyber Dragons are also light attribute, and he is introduced with "light" theming which is all reversed after his turn to the dark side in season 2.

The kanji can also be part of the word ryousatsu (亮察) which can mean to take into account, to consider, and to sympathize. A core theme of Ryou's character is having respect for his opponent and not underestimating them -- this is why you'll often hear Shou referring to "respectful dueling," and also why Power Bond is their signature card, because without respecting your opponent's capabilities and taking their field into account, the card will backfire on you.

Oh, and as an aside, Ryou does not use the same kanji as Bakura Ryou from the original Yu-Gi-Oh, who uses 了 -- completion or ending.

⇀ tenjoin asuka (天上院 明日香) and tenjoin fubuki (天上院 吹雪)

« tenjo (天上) - heavens » « in (院) - institution »

The first part ties into the Cyber Angels that Asuka uses, as well as the Atmosphere cards that Fubuki uses in the manga. It's also referenced by Fubuki in his embarrassing pickup line ("What do you see above?" "Ten... join!" This is the guy that Manjoume thinks is the love magician)

The second part is a particle used for institutions, particularly stately ones in government or higher education, which makes sense if you believe Asuka becomes a teacher. Overall, it's a refined name which perfectly suits Asuka, and not Fubuki.

« asu (明日) - tomorrow » « ka (香) - fragrance »

The first part of her name is why Jim calls her Tomorrow Girl, which spawned the Asuka/Jim ship by itself, but it also suits Asuka really well, because her character arc in season 4 is ultimately about moving on and embracing the future. She leaves behind the safety of Duel Academy and takes a step into the unknown by going to America.

« fubuki (吹雪) - blizzard »

This is why he's nicknamed the Blizzard Prince. Otherwise, he doesn't have any connection to blizzards, but Asuka uses ice decks in the Society of Light and in the manga, so the Tenjoins both have some ice theming.

⇀ misawa daichi (三沢 大地)

« mi (三) - three » « sawa (沢) - marsh, brilliance »

Another number-themed name alongside Judai's 10 and Manjoume's 10,000. sawa is a common kanji in names, but you could argue it ties into his signature monster, Water Dragon.

« dai (大) - great, vast » « chi (地) - earth »

Of his six decks, we see two of them, his water deck and his earth deck. The latter of which he uses against Tania, who in turn uses her wisdom deck -- which is perfect because daichi can also be a homophone of 大知, which means great wisdom. Nerd.

⇀ tyranno kenzan (ティラノ 剣山)

This name is derived from tyrannosaurus rex. Because he's got dino fucking DNA.

« ken (剣) - sword » « zan (山) - mountain »

The literal characters are fitting for Kenzan, who has an offense-focused deck of mostly earth attribute monsters, and a personality to match. But as a whole, 剣山 refers to a tool in traditional flower arrangement. The kenzan is the base in which the arrangement is stuck into, a foundation which keeps the structure secure. Kenzan ultimately looks up to Judai (and calls him aniki) because he wants to be a leader like him, one who can bear the weight of his followers' expectations. We don't get much of this after his introductory episode, but I still think it's a fitting name for a dependable guy.

⇀ saotome rei (早乙女 レイ)

« sa (早) - early, quickly » « otome (乙女) - maiden »

This one is pretty on the nose. The first character refers to how she came to Duel Academy early, being younger than all the other characters, and not joining the cast until much later. The otome is the same used in her signature card Koisuru Otome, or Maiden in Love, and also refers to a romance genre for girls. As a whole, saotome is also a term for a girl who plants rice paddies.

The name may also be a reference to Saotome Ranma, the protagonist of Ranma ½, which is about a boy who changes into a girl when splashed with water.

« rei (レイ) »

Rei is a unisex name with many different kanji spellings and meanings, but instead, Rei's name is spelled with katakana. Given that she dresses as a boy twice and uses masculine pronouns in Japanese, this may be to make the gender more ambiguous than if kanji with more gendered connotations were used, such as 麗 (graceful) or 鈴 (bell sound) which are more feminine, or 零 (zero), or 令 (authority) which are more masculine.

If you ever wondered, Ray from Arc-V also uses the same katakana spelling, though this may be because most of the Arc-V characters from other dimensions use katakana, which sounds more foreign or ambiguous in origin. Meanwhile, Rei from Zexal uses 零 (zero).

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX Episodes 93 and 94 Subbed (Finalized) - Fixes/Edits Breakdown

Since it’s 2023 and Tumblr still has a dumb link limit in posts which yeets them out of the tags used for them and limits their reach, I’ve made this separate post supplementing my 93/94 Release Post with my usual animation fix/edit breakdown for the interested, since I did still want to give folks a more visual idea as I’d been doing.   Details below the cut!

Fixes/Edits! (93)

During the scene with Asuka in the academy hallway, after Fubuki walks over suggesting that Asuka dueling Judai and defeating him would mean that she’ll stay this possessed, Shou chimes in asking if that would mean she’d stay this weird for the rest of her life; the screen pans up to Fubuki on the left as he says this, but right as the panning starts, Shou’s mouth stops moving even though he’s still saying his line.  I fixed this in Sony Vegas by recycling his flaps from before the panning starts, repositioning them as the pan happens until his mouth is offscreen. (Luckily, since it wasn’t a zooming panning shot, I was able to just move the frames along the x- and y- axes to then mask out his mouth over the footage.)

As Fubuki flashes us back to one of his childhood duels with Asuka, flashback!Fubuki activates Swing of Memories, but the card itself is reversed in his hand, making its effect box face Asuka.  Fixed in AfterEffects using a proxy that I placed correctly in its place, masking Fubuki’s thumb over it.

Later in the flashback, as their duel runs into the evening (what a long duel), a repeat of #2 happens with the Swing of Memories on Fubuki’s field (I assume he got it back somehow and played it again...) being reversed--fixed in AfterEffects by placing the proxy over it in its correct facing.

Shortly after the flashback, Manjoume pops in having overheard everything and, after Shou and Kenzan remind him of what he did to Asuka, offers to help Judai; he tosses a card his way, but for a few quick frames (one frame of movement), Manjoume’s closed mouth is shown over the card’s back.  Fixed in Photoshop by covering up his mouth, then using Vegas to reinsert the fixed frame into the footage.

After Judai hesitatingly accepts Manjoume’s card, Shou turns to ask him if something’s wrong, but after asking, he suddenly turns back to Manjoume before Kenzan turns to note that Judai seemed unsure.  I fixed this in Vegas by holding Shou’s position still after he turns to Judai with a mask over the footage, recycling a couple of lip-flaps for the rest of his line at that point in the process.

Later during the duel, as Judai’s attacked directly by Asuka’s Snow Sprite, the LP counter that appears seems like it was thrown onto the footage as a .png file or something, due to the white spots along its edges.  Fixed this in Vegas by masking out the counter itself, sans-white spots, then enlarging it to cover up the original.

Fixes/Edits! (94)

As the episode starts, and Asuka notes the parts of her three-part combo against Judai, she mentions her White Night Queen allowing her to destroy any card he’s set, but her Disk shows White Night Queen and Snow Sprite on the Monster Zones opposite of where they should be (Queen should be in Zone 2, Snow Sprite in Zone 4).  Fixed first using AfterEffects to place a proxy for both on their correct Zones in the first frame of the shot, which I then threw into Sony Vegas and re-zoomed it accordingly via keyframes for the rest of it.

A bit later, Judai has his Card Gunner take Snow Sprite down successfully, causing Asuka to reel as she takes a LP hit--but she still has Snow Sprite on her Disk when it wouldn’t be there anymore due to its destruction.  Fixed in Photoshop by blanking its Monster Zone for the three frames of smoke moving above it which I recycled and repositioned in Vegas as the shot went on, using a transparent smoke layer or two to fade the smoke as the rest of the smoke faded out.

After using Pot of Greed with Snow Sprite beaten, Judai summons Sparkman in Defense Mode using Oversoul during his Main Phase 2, but his card on the field is positioned as if it were in Attack Mode, with the lore box facing Judai and not to his left side as it should.  Fixed in AfterEffects by placing a proxy correctly in Defense Mode under him for a frame, masking in his feet and knees over it, which I then re-zoomed via a few keyframes in Vegas.

After Shou notes his sense that Asuka was more proud and headstrong than gentle, Manjoume emphasizes that the Asuka on the field isn’t his Tenjoin-kun; after shouting out to her, a cold wind passes the field, and we see that Card Gunner and Sparkman’s Defense-Mode cards are reversed under them, with their effect/lore boxes facing Judai’s right.  Fixed in AfterEffects by placing correctly-facing proxies under them, masking them back in above the cards.

After Asuka beats his Fluff Tokens, Judai says he really feels like on the brink, telling Asuka that this is getting good; Asuka slides in on a split-screen asking if he still intends to bluff, but he insists that this is where dueling gets good, noting that Asuka should know that, too--she smirks before Judai starts to get his turn going, but Judai starts moving to draw a frame before their split-screens start to split.  I fixed this in Vegas by holding the frame just before over that early-moving one, making it so Judai now moves in time with their split-screens moving.

As Judai orders Neos to attack a revived Snow Sprite, there are three quick frames before Neos fully slides in over Judai where, once it’s visible, Judai’s lit-up Disk orb is missing.  Fixed this in Photoshop by drawing in the red light there for a frame, then quickly re-zooming this frame in Vegas for the three frames.  (There are also some issues going on with Judai in this shot, as his hair and jacket collar sorta double-up on themselves during the whooshing before un-doubling-up in the frame just before he moves again--this happens repeatedly after he slides his arm in and is zoomed out, and I’d have liked to try fixing it, but with the moving background and all, I wasn’t too sure I’d be able to give it a good-quality crack.) [Also, side-note: some great Neos detail in this shot.]

Still in his Battle Phase, after Asuka mentions she’ll be using Cold Sleeper’s effect to revive Snow Sprite again, Judai capitalizes on her still being gone to activate a Magic Card; Asuka slides in on a split-screen and deduces it’ll be a Quick-Play, and their split-screen splits to show Judai activating Quick Summon, but Asuka’s split takes an extra frame longer to leave the shot.  Fixed in Vegas by masking in part of the very next frame over what’s left of Asuka’s split in that extra frame to remove it.

After Asuka in fact uses Cold Sleeper’s effect to bring Snow Sprite back, Kenzan and Shou react from the stands, but as Shou moves to do so in this panning shot, there are a quick three frames (one frame of movement) where the shading on his nose is miscolored black.  Fixed in Photoshop by recoloring it appropriately (with the next movement frame as reference), then using Vegas to quickly re-pan the fixed frame across the three frames it lasts.

As Asuka attacks with her Blue-Ice White Night Dragon, Judai uses his Card Blocker’s effect to save his Neos by letting him take the hit; Asuka notes that he likely thought he’d get away unscathed, but her White Blizzard will still kick in for 600 damage--as she does, her Disk shows White Night Queen in the Monster Zone her White Night Dragon now occupies.  Fixed in AfterEffects by placing a proxy for it over Queen in one of the shot’s earlier frames (once it was fully in view), which I then took into Vegas and re-zoomed via keyframes for the full shot.

After ending her turn, Asuka notes that she has Judai cornered on all sides--Judai slides in on a split-screen to grunt in response, but the shot of Asuka moves slightly a frame before Judai’s split starts to slide into view, instead of both happening simultaneously.  Fixed in Vegas by redoing both Asuka moving and Judai’s split sliding in on top (by masking it in) to make them move together.

After telling Manjoume and Fubuki that they’ll be helping him one more time, Judai says he’s removing two cards in his Cemetery from play to summon his Magic Striker--but for a few frames as he lifts up its card in his hand, the card’s back is missing the orange outline it should have.  Fixed in Photoshop by redrawing it on for both movement frames, then reinserting them into the footage in Vegas.

Later, post-White-Veil’s-destruction, Judai says Asuka really is fiery; she slides in on a split-screen and notes that Judai will freeze from her White Blizzard, but groans after Judai again says he won’t give up until the end--Judai then moves to start his turn, but similar to #5 above, he moves a frame before their splits start to move and split apart.  Fixed this in Vegas by just holding the first “groaning” frame there over the second early-moving one, making it so Asuka’s split moves in time with Judai moving to draw for his turn.

After Asuka calls Flare Scarab a puny Monster, Judai slides in on a split-screen to say that he always says none of his Monsters are puny; Asuka reacts with a “You’re not--” before their splits split apart to show Judai doing a Contact Fusion, but for a quick frame as they do, Asuka’s split is missing its border.  Fixed in Vegas by duplicating her split from the next frame and repositioning its border accordingly.

[fanfic] Treasure Trove

 Fubuki wandered by the ocean, partly listening to the way the waves lapped on the beach, partly listening to the music that rose from his guitar as he strummed it delicately.  He'd written the song just the night before and he wasn't sure if he liked it this way just.  He needed to find the correct chords, no matter how long it took.

Carefully he settled down on one of the rocks splashed by the ocean, and kept on rehearsing, humming under his breath as he did, slowly working it out.  So deep was he in his efforts that he didn't notice anything off about the way that the water splashed until a sharp voice snapped.

"Could you stop that racket?" 

Fubuki jerked his head up and stared.  If someone had asked him, he would have assumed that whoever spoke would have to be on the beach near him.  But the voice came from right in front of him - and someone bobbed out in the water, arms resting on top of it, glaring at him. 

Pretty eyes, was his first thought, and he smiled brilliantly as it dawned on him someone was actually there in front of him.  "Well, hello there,"  he said, setting his guitar aside.  "I wasn't bothering you, was I?"  He offered another of his best smiles as he did.

The stranger in the water sniffed, splashing a little.  "Of course not.  What are you doing here anyway?  No one ever comes out here."

"I was just practicing."  Fubuki shrugged.  "What about you?  If you're out here, then people come out here."

"I'm not a person.  Not a human, anyway."  The stranger shifted a little more, and Fubuki spied what looked like a tail.  He did a double-take, then looked even more closely.; "You're a merperson!"  Fubuki declared in absolute joy.  He'd heard of merfolk before but he'd never encountered one.  Some people weren't even sure if they existed, but here was one of them.  He wished he could show Asuka.  She'd never quite believed that they were real.

Stormy gray eyes rolled.  "Well, we can guess you're not blind."  His tail swished through the water.  Fubuki couldn't get a good enough look to be sure of the scale color, but it looked dark, and he thought it might match the other's black hair. 

"Nope!  I know something attractive when I see it."  Fubuki grinned before he tucked his guitar away in the case and set it where it wouldn't get wet.  "Hey, you don't mind if I join you, do you?"

"Huh?"  The merman stared at him, tail swishing even faster.  "Why would you want to?"

"Because I don't like yelling when I'm talking to someone,"  Fubuki pointed out as reasonably as he was capable of.  "I'm a pretty good swimmer."

"Uh..."  The merman shifted a bit, then shrugged.  "All right.  Come on in."  He backed away, giving Fubuki space as the bard dived cleanly into the water.  He dived downward, glad that the ocean was pretty deep even here, and then surfaced, right in front of the merman.

"My name's Fubuki,"  he said, wiping water from his face.  "What can I call you?"

Again the merman shifted, but this time it looked more out of nervousness than anything else.  "Manjoume.  That's good enough."

"Nice to meet you then, Manjoume,"  Fubuki offered.  "I'm a bard.  I wander around making music for everyone."  He made something of a face.  "I'm supposed to be writing a song for my sister but I haven't been able to get it done right.  That's what I was doing."

"Well, you could probably stand to practice a little more,"  Manjoume retorted.  "I mean, it was okay, but not that great.  You could do it a lot better."

Fubuki had heard that merfolk knew a lot about music.  He darted towards the shore, reaching for his guitar.  "Think you could give me some pointers?"  If there was anything he wanted, it was to get this song done for his sister before they crossed paths again.   He started to unstrap the instrument, turning back as he did.

"No!"  Manjoume shook his head quickly.  "No!  I have to go!  Good-bye!"  He ducked down under the water, vanishing out of sight in a matter of seconds.  Fubuki stared at where he'd been, head tilted a little.

That was weird.  Did I say something wrong?  He wouldn't have thought so normally but Manjoume had vanished so quickly when he'd just asked about music.  He wasn't sure what the problem was.

He wrinkled his nose, then slung the instrument case over his back and started along the beach once again.  He hummed as he did, trying to get the rhythm correct, and not paying much attention to what else was going on around him, and certainly not at all to the gray eyes that lurked just under the water and followed him along until he made his camp for the night.

Tiny sounds of a tail flipping through the water, then a splash as a large fish hit the beach near Fubuki.  He regarded it carefully.

"I didn't know merpeople ate fish,"  he said, not looking in the water, but reaching for the fish and his knife. 

"You don't know a lot about us," a grumbling voice came from behind a rock.  Fubuki smiled briefly, before he set to work skinning and preparing his dinner. 

Before he set the fish over the fire he built, Fubuki observed, "This is a very big fish.  I don't think I could eat all of it myself.  Wonder if I could share it with anyone."

He did hope Manjoume would either ask him to come closer to the water or come out on land.  Among things he didn't know was that if merfolk could exist on land at all. 

"Oh, I think we could help you eat that,"  came a rough voice from the woods that crept closer to the beach.  Fubuki whirled at once, one hand reaching for the knife - or where the knife had been.  Someone else had picked it up.  Ranged in between him and the path that led away were ten or so large muscular types, set to make sure he didn't go anywhere.  One of them stepped forward, the one who'd spoken before.  "And you in the water, get up here - and bring some treasure when you do it!"

Manjoume snorted, tail slapping the water.  "What makes you think I have any treasure?  Or that I'd give it to you if I did?"

"Because if you don't, we're going to fillet and bone this guy like he did that fish,"  the leader declared, flipping Fubuki's knife in his hands.  "Everyone knows merpeople have lots of treasure.  You get it when ships sink.  It's not even yours.  So hand it over - the biggest one that you've got."

Manjoume poked his head out from behind the rock and glared.  "It might not be mine but it's not yours either.  So why should I give it to you?"

The leader flicked one hand, and Fubuki found himself with a sharp blade pointed at his throat.  Thankfully it wasn't his; that would have been too embarrassing. But he didn't like having weapons of any kind pointed at him and he frowned.

"You'd better leave.  I'm not going to be responsible for what happens if you don't."  Technically he would, but if they didn't leave him be, then they would be asking for it.  He didn't like their chances any more when one of them gripped onto his arms and the knife came closer to his throat.

"You stay quiet, bard,"  the leader declared.  "You're not going to do anything except sit here and be a good boy."

"Leave him alone!"  Manjoume declared.  Overhead there rolled a peal of thunder.  That confused Fubuki; there hadn't been any storms in the area that he knew of.  But now steel gray clouds, much the same color as Manjoume's eyes, boiled up overhead. 

"What we are going to do is wait for you to bring us that treasure."  The leader smirked.  "Otherwise, blood starts flowing and it's not going to be ours."

Fubuki sighed a very deep sigh.  "I wouldn't be so sure about that."  He really didn't want to do this.  He didn't want to do anything like this, but he didn't want them getting mad at Manjoume and trying to hurt him. 

The leader waved a hand at him, probably wanting his minions to shut Fubuki up.  Fubuki raised one hand, shaking off the restraining grips on him, and rested his fingers on the leader's shoulder.  Ice flowed outward from the touch and the captain shrieked in fear and pain, jerking away, dropping Fubuki's knife.  Fubuki picked it up quickly and stepped closer to the water.  His original intention was to get in the water and hide with Manjoume until the thugs went away.  But he wasn't even in the water before another hand touched his shoulder, a much quieter and gentler feel than any of those bandits.  He glanced over to see a familiar face - if only familiar by having seen it for a couple of hours.  Manjoume stood next to him.

What Fubuki noticed first of all after that was that Manjoume wasn't wearing a single stitch of clothes.  In the water he didn't need to but they weren't in the water now.  Fubuki's eyes dropped, then he jerked his gaze up even more quickly.  He'd not blushed since he was eleven years old and yet now he turned a deep shade of red.

If Manjoume knew what the problem was, he didn't say anything.  Instead he turned to look at the bandits, who were busy regrouping and starting to bristle with weaponry.  His gray eyes narrowed and overhead, the clouds thickened even more.

"You have no idea of who you're tangling with,"  he declared.  "Let me introduce myself."  One hand raised to the sky.  "Ten - one hundred - one thousand - Manjoume Thunder!"  And on those last two words, lightning arced downward from the clouds and slammed into the group. 

When Fubuki could see again, a pile of very singed clothing and scorched metal that might have been weapons once upon a time draped over the beach.  He rubbed the back of his head.

"You did that?"  He'd never seen weather control on that level before!

Slowly Manjoume turned to him, and his own cheeks tinged just the tiniest bit of red.  "Yeah.  I - I'm a thunder mage."  He glanced to one side.  "I can't sing.  At all."

Oh.  That explained it.  Most merfolk were excellent singers, or so the stories Fubuki had heard went.  If Manjoume couldn't sing at all, then that was why he'd reacted when Fubuki wanted pointers!  He had never been that embarrassed before.

Then he shrugged it off and grinned.  "That was amazing!  You're incredible!"  He smiled brilliantly at Manjoume, who stared at him for a few moments before shaking his head.

"What about you?  What did you do to him?"  Manjoume waved one hand to the dust.  There was also, Fubuki noticed, a faint hint of scorched meat in the air, that didn't include his fish.  He would still have to cook that.

"I'm an ice mage,"  Fubuki told him, scratching the back of his head.  "Uh, well, not really.  What I really am is a bard.  But I have ice mage powers and I have the training.  Mom and Dad insisted the third time I made it snow on my sister's birthday."

Manjoume tilted his head.  "What's so wrong about that?"

"Her birthday is on Midsummer's Day,"  Fubuki admitted.  He hesitated before he asked something else. "Um, if I can save that fish, would you like to share it with me?"  He wrinkled his nose.  "Maybe a little farther down the beach, though?"

He wasn't sure if Manjoume would agree.  Then slowly, the merman nodded. “I know a good place." 

Fubuki grinned.  Asuka wouldn’t believe this.

Notes: Fubuki will also offer Manjoume a cloak later. Not that he would need it, unless he's going to spend time on land. I might do more with this later.

Okay we know about your love for rival shipping but what are your thoughts on jewelshipping? (Johan x Manjoume)

Hmmm. Good question.

In a sense if I think about it they would work in a fairly similar way to Manjoume and Judai- minus the bits that come with... shared history?

Johan has been there for a shorter amount of time and frankly? We were robbed of a possible great friendship, since they barely ever interacted in canon. I kind of imagine they would get talking with Johan inquiring about the Ojamas- and Manjoume would hate it, but then he'd be saying something that sounds very much like "your monsters are way cooler" and "the bond I share with them doesn't run as deep as yours". That would, I feel, make Johan very happy. And so he'd start talking about how good a person Manjoume actually is around the school, because "no man who can perceive his bond with the Crystal Beasts can be a bad person". Johan definitely would try to argue that Manjoume clearly loves the Ojamas a lot, but edgy boy will never be truly ready for that conversation.

In general, Johan would probably like... drag Manjoume out of the house to go an do something fun and Manjoume just... doesn't really fight it, because sure, let's see what dumb shit my ray of sunhine of a boyfriend has planned for today.

They would also probably borderline adopt Judai. Johan would be the parent who smiles and waves and gives you a snack in case you're hungry, Manjoume would be the one who screams angrily at you to not take candy from strangers.

I think it has a lot of potential. They could go around looking for troubled Duel Spirits to try and fix their problems. I think that would be a cool concept. Extra dumbass energy, but they are also really competent.

Finally, the ship name. ... It's so pretty. I feel like any Johan ship could be called Jewelshipping, you know? But a part of my brain thinks: "Ah, yes, it's because Johan is Crystal boy and Manjoume's eyes are like Obsidian". Not to quote A Song of Ice and Fire of all things, but uh. Dragonglass. Fitting with Manjoume's grey irises. For the sake of preserving the spirit of the 'jewelshipping' title, I hereby claim that Johan collects rocks and Manjoume buys some cool and rare ones for him when he stumbles upon them (he seeks out specialised shops, don't be fooled).

So I had a dumb idea yesterday. I was playing cookie run and trying to level up my cookies and then I came to the realization that some of those little skrunks reminded me of GX peeps!

So I decided to doodle some. But Syrus is the main focus here cause he is worth it 💅

FANFIC: YUGIOH GX RAREPAIR WEEK DAY 7

PROMPT: Free Day

TITLE: Volatile Elements, Chapter 1: “Exothermic Reaction.”

SHIP: Tigershipping (Taniya x Misawa; one-sided in this chapter and mutual later on.)

SUMMARY:  Story: Fifteen-year-old Taniya, the youngest of the Seven Stars, is planted at Duel Academia as a student by Kagemaru.  But with a relationship that’s perhaps not quite what she anticipated, a struggle with increasingly divided loyalties, and a cryptic prophecy, her hands are going to be full this year. 

Chapter: Asuka thinks that watching the entrance exams is just going to be depressing, only to get unexpected company.  Meanwhile, Taniya sees the guy of her dreams.

NOTES: This, like all of my submissions for this event, is a queued post since I will be on vacation during the actual Rarepair Week; I plan to post on Ao3 when I return home at the end of the month.  This is a canon-divergence AU, and it’s a pretty ambitious idea by my standards.  I’m not even sure I’ll be able to finish it, but I thought I’d at least post the first chapter.

If Tenjoin Asuka were to be completely honest with herself, she would admit that she wasn’t having fun watching the entrance exams.  Many second and third-year students, as well as first-year Obelisks who had gotten into Duel Academia via the prep school route or family connections, were in attendance.  It was kind of a tradition…this way, they could get re-acquainted with each other after the summer break and check out the incoming talent among those who had taken the exams.  This year, there was an added enticement: rumors of one young man who had scored an almost unheard-of 995 out of 1000 on the written exam.  Only one person in the history of the school had ever gotten a higher score than this, and he was the guy currently standing to her right: Marufuji Ryo. 

However, she simply couldn’t feel the anticipation like she knew she ought to.  All she could think was that Fubuki should have been standing here on the walkway with them.  He would have loved it had he been here, she was certain; cheering all applicants on regardless of rank.  But he wasn’t here, and things were awkward in his absence.  Ryo obviously felt it too: he hadn’t said a single word all morning, which was unusual even for him.  Therefore, all she had to listen to was the commentary from Manjoume Jun and his friends, who were sitting directly below her and Ryo. 

Manjoume was somewhat odd, she thought: rude to virtually everyone except Asuka herself, for reasons known only to him.  He put on displays of bravado that were convincing enough to newcomers, although Asuka had known him long enough to suspect that these were intended to hide deeper insecurities.  Currently, he was not in the least bit impressed with the crop of applicants they had seen thus far, and vocally made his displeasure known.  He had placed all of them so far in one of two categories: “boring” or “terrible.”  She had heard Manjoume telling one of his lackeys that he actually preferred the terrible ones, since at least their mistakes were entertaining to watch. 

“When are we going to see Number One?” he griped.  “That’s why we’re all here.  Are they really going to save him for last?”

Asuka briefly considered how satisfying it would be to yell at Manjoume to shut up, but decided against it.  She had a reputation to uphold, and was also feeling too gloomy to want to take any action.  Instead, she leaned forward on the railing, staring into space and hoping beyond anything that this would be over soon…

“Excuse me.  Is this spot taken?”

It was a female voice, rather low-pitched and with a hint of a foreign accent.  Asuka looked up sharply to realize that another girl in an Obelisk uniform had approached her from her left, and she had been too despondent to notice.  She thought that she remembered seeing this girl at the Obelisk Dorm orientation a couple days ago, although they hadn’t spoken to each other.  And really, her appearance made it so that she was not easily forgotten.  The primary distinction was her height and build.  The girl was significantly taller than Asuka, who wasn’t exactly short herself.  In fact, this newcomer was very nearly as tall as Ryo, and Asuka suspected that it was mostly his hair that put him over the edge.  She was also a little gangling; evidently, she had done a lot of growing in a short time, and the rest of her proportions hadn’t quite caught up yet.  Nevertheless, the girl had some impressive arm muscles, which were shown off well by the sleeveless uniform jacket. 

“No.  No, it’s not taken,” Asuka replied.  In fact, she was glad that this girl had made her appearance when she did.  Perhaps she could serve as a distraction.  “My name is Tenjoin Asuka, and this is Marufuji Ryo.”

The new girl smiled brightly.  “Borjigin Taniya.  Great to meet you!”  Her grin was so infectious that Asuka, as dour as her mood was, couldn’t help but to smile back.

“So…Borjigin-san…” she began, carefully attempting to pronounce the surname properly.  However, the girl waved it off.

“Please, call me Taniya.  Use whatever suffix you want, or none at all if you prefer.  I’m not picky.”

“All right.  Taniya, then,” Asuka amended.  “You can call me by my given name as well.  Did you go to prep school?  I don’t recall ever seeing you there.”  The Obelisks all usually knew each other, especially the girls, since they were only admitted via the prep school and were not permitted to take the entrance exams.  (This fact had always rankled her, honestly.)    She wasn’t certain how Taniya could have gotten into the school otherwise.

Taniya shook her head.  “No.  I grew up in Mongolia and only moved to Japan two years ago.  But I happen to know one of the teachers at the school, and he made arrangements for me to get a place there.”

“I see.”  Well, that was a bit unusual, and Asuka was pretty sure that this wasn’t the entire story.  However, this was Duel Academia, and Fubuki had told her that very few things were normal or usual there. 

Obviously, this meant that Taniya would fit right in.  Everything about her, from her two long braids of red hair that had obviously been carefully styled by someone close to her, to her forest-green eyes, to her large, pointed ears and golden-brown skin, had a bit of an otherworldly look to it.  There was something almost magnetic about Taniya’s charisma, too, and Asuka found it difficult to tear her eyes away despite knowing that she was staring.  However, the taller girl was observing her and Ryo nearly as intently.  Then, in a heartbeat, she switched back to her previous bubbly self. 

“Asuka-san.  Have you seen any cute guys here yet that I should know about?” Taniya turned to her, winked, and giggled.  Asuka felt her face warm a bit, and now even Ryo was gazing at Taniya curiously. 

“No.  Sorry,” she replied.  Yes, this Taniya was strange, and appeared to interpret the norms of polite conversation somewhat loosely.  But she could get away with it since she was so darn likable. 

“Hm.  That’s too bad.  I guess I’ll have to keep my eye out, then,” the taller girl said.  As they all turned their attention back to the testing arenas, a field was freed up and an announcement went out for the next applicant. 

“Number 119, Marufuji Sho, please report to Arena 3.  Number 119 to Arena 3.  Thank you.”

“Your brother’s up, Ryo,” Asuka commented.  She herself didn’t know Sho all that well; they’d grown up in the same neighborhood, had a couple of playdates when they were small, but had ended up going to different schools.  She’d only really gotten acquainted with the Marufuji brothers after Fubuki’s disappearance, and even then Sho had seemed almost intimidated by her. 

“So I heard,” Ryo confirmed.  Asuka thought he’d have been a bit more invested in his brother’s success.  Oh well.  She herself kept an eye on Sho’s duel off and on; although he’d gotten off to a slow start, he began holding his own after a couple of turns.  Then, they all heard the announcement they’d been waiting for. 

“Number 1, Misawa Daichi, please report to Arena 4.”

“Finally,” she heard Manjoume say.  He’d been right after all: Number 1 had been the last to get summoned to the arena.  Everyone craned their necks towards Arena 4 to get a better look.  Then, after a few minutes, they saw the platform on the floor below rise up to take its place on the arena floor. 

Misawa Daichi proved to be a boy of about average height, with a sturdy build.  His middle school uniform was either white or light gray; it was difficult to tell for sure from this height.  Neither could Asuka get a great look at his face, though he appeared to be pretty regular-looking from what she could see. 

Right then, she heard a very peculiar noise: a kind of elongated half-gasp, half-shriek that she thought sounded a bit like an amorous vacuum cleaner.  She looked over to her left, to see that Taniya had made the noise.  The redhead had fallen to her knees, and was staring at Number 1 so intently that a good portion of her face extended out from between the bars on the railing. 

She turned back briefly to gaze at Asuka, eyes huge and sparkling. 

“I found my cute guy!” she exclaimed.

Unbeknownst to Asuka, both Taniya’s vision and hearing were enhanced by her Duel Spirit energy.  She saw the fine details that others could not. 

This boy…this boy!  Those slate-gray eyes, and that square jawline, and his regal bearing…oh!  She thought that he went beyond cute…that in fact he may have been the most handsome guy she had ever seen in her entire fifteen years and six months of existence.

But it wasn’t his looks that drew her in the most.  Rather, it was the fact that he appeared to have no fear or test-taking nerves at all.  He had come here to win, not merely to try.  Truly, calling him a boy did not do him justice; no, he looked like a full-fledged man. 

She had never before met a male who made her feel this way.  The crush she’d had on Darkness’s host for a couple of months last year, which had seemed all-consuming to her at a time, now felt flimsy and juvenile compared to this. 

“I love him!” she said out loud as she removed her face from the railing and rose back to her feet.  Tenjoin Asuka and Marufuji Ryo both looked at her askance.  Oops…had she used too strong of a word?

“I like him,” she amended, although that word seemed woefully inadequate to express her sudden burning passion.  “Do either of you know anything else about him?”

“His name is Misawa Daichi,” Ryo informed her, in a deep voice that was almost monotone.  “He got the second-highest score in Duel Academia’s history on the written exam.  A prodigy in math and science, so I heard; good enough to possibly go straight to university, but he chose to come here instead.” 

Well, Taniya was beyond happy that he had.  Over in Arena 3, Ryo’s brother had managed to pull off a narrow win, although she scarcely noticed.  Not when she had this hunk to drool over.  Misawa had scored a good hit early on with his Vorse Raider, although the proctor now appeared to be setting up that most annoying of strategies: stalling. 

“Aw, come on!” she protested when the proctor summoned Big Shield Gardna.  “That’s against the rules!”

Ryo looked down his nose at her.  “No, it’s not.”

“Well, it should be!” Taniya insisted.

Meanwhile, the proctor had also summoned Gear Golem the Moving Fortress, and paid 800 life points to do the same amount of direct damage to Misawa.  He obviously thought he had this in the bag, but he had forgotten about Misawa’s facedown card.  Which was Ring of Destruction.  It was glorious, and it won him the duel.  Taniya did a little happy dance. 

The mystery nasally voice guy, whom Taniya couldn’t see from this angle, was still not impressed, remarking, “We should’ve just stayed at the campus.”  However, she barely registered his words, as she was too busy trying to get Misawa’s attention.

“Hey!  Up here!” she shouted.  Unfortunately, Misawa either didn’t hear her or was ignoring her.  He calmly left the arena and sat down in the area reserved for the students who had completed their practical exams. 

“Nooooo!  Wait!  Come back!  I wanted to talk to you!” She leaned so far over the railing that she might have fallen over it if Asuka hadn’t reached out to pull her back in the nick of time.  Thus thwarted in her attempts, Taniya slumped down to the floor and sulked a bit.  However, she wasn’t about to give up that easily.  They were going to a school on an island, after all.  It was only a matter of time before she’d be able to finally meet the object of her affections. He wouldn’t know what hit him!  Yes, she knew she had her duties and all, but who said she couldn’t have a little fun on the side while waiting for that?  It wasn’t like anything was going to happen soon.  They didn’t even have their seventh Star yet.

She was so absorbed in her planning that she barely registered all the fuss about the boy who had come in late.

Idolshipping: 8/10 IF YOU ASKED ME BEFORE SEASON 3 I WOULD'VE GIVEN IT A 10/10 but Ryo X Edo swooped in and i- yeah.

Nonetheless HELL YEAH FUBUKI AND RYO WERE TOTALLY A THING. Like come on Ryo spent the whole first season looking into the distance with Asuka just talking about her brother and wanting him back LIKE LIKE YEAH.

I think the hell kaiser ryo Vs Fubuki Cosplaying as his emo self was one of my favourite duels too, solely because of the way it ended.

Fubuki really thought he "beat darkness" ( which i laughed to death about but anyway) so he wouldn't be all emo anymore huh...

To be honest Manjoume sounds more like Lorenz rather than Sylvain. Though he has similarities with both. But Asuka as Dimitri sounds so out of character. I would choose Fubuki or Kaiser instead. Both have just like Judai a evil counterpart after x event.

I know Asuka is the same with the Light of destruction thing, but that was mostly a mind control thing for me.

Wouldn't know who to put as Claude. But Jim is a good case since he has a scaly companion with Shirley. Austin O'brien could be his second in command.

Its the aesthetic for me for my reasoning behind Asuka as Dimitri not because of their character plots or personalities and goals. The only thing they have in common is the hair colour the blue theme and their polite mannerisms simply the concept of how awesome she would look in his armour, no adjustments made

I dont see Fubuki as a character that shows up enough to to be a main lord but then again you could argue the same with Jim. But collectively I would round up his screen time compared to Fubuki’s as a lot more because S3

Kaiser is a great choice for Dimitri and for the brute strength aspect tho

I think the whole family issues the brother issues and the crest issues for Sylvain resonates for Manjoume and his brothers and their drive to succeed - not necessarily the personality as a whole match. Plus lance of ruin looks gnarly af I think it would look cool in match with Manjoumes skinny profile
