Note
This is my favourite deck at the moment, and it's a big blue ramp deck, primarily using manarocks to ramp into the myojin, bounce it somehow and play it again, with a side order of proliferate to keep the engines running.
I have no idea what you'd suggest for it but if you have fun mana producers somewhere I would love to see them
Tumblr media
If you want some mana-producing artifacts, here's a personal favorite:
Tumblr media
Manascape Refractor is pretty nice as soon as there's a bounceland around, yours or your opponents, and can pick up some really powerful abilities if your meta runs Dowsing Daggers, Mazes of Iths, Cabal Coffers with an Urborg out, or similarly powerful lands.
But if you want an unexpected ramp spell...
Tumblr media
Don't see this as a bad counterspell, but as a good Treasure making spell that happens to also stop one of your opponent's spells from resolving. There'll frequently be something mana value 4 or more to snap this on in Commander, and this can explosively ramp you into big turns. Mana Drain also does this if you have access to it, but this one is significantly less expensive and you might have extra synergy with the treasures if you're already supporting mana rocks.

The ramp package. My deck needs to cast my commander early but also needs to leave mana open for counter magic, draw spells and tutors. Early consistent ramp is critical and could theoretically allow me to combo off as early as turn 2. Typically though, I find it best to take my time, set up and go for the win when I see an opening. I don’t like that Sky Diamond enters tapped and feel like Extraplanar Lens is slow, however I don’t play competitively so they work fine. For now anyway. #magicthegathering #mtg #edh #cmdr #commander #monoblue #talrandskysummoner #manarocks

With high cost and a focus on big spells for the purpose of dragon creation, its a no brainer that I'd want what is pretty much a powerful manarock in my command zone
Tumblr media
Hmm... today I shall convince my butch to play magic with me and also work on a deck (Girl who wants to make a dragon themed grixis spellslinger deck)

HEY LETS LOOK AT ANOTHER LOREHOLD CARD BEFORE BED
This card gives red access to copy tech in an extremely useful way: tape it to a manarock. Its rad as heck. Sure you might see a temp copy but being part artifact and not an instant or sorcery is what makes it stand out.
That means you can let the creature die to tape it to Mimic Vat, imprint it on Prototype Portal, sac or recur it for value. Like I’ve mentioned red artificer breaks and rebuilds artifacts VERY easily, and at 3cmc sun titan and goblin engineer can target it too. This is an exceptionally handy tool you can slot into the mana rock space of your artificer arsenal.

Budget EDH - Tajic, Blade of the Legion
Check it out here: (deck link)
Hail planeswalker!
I had been working on a deck tech for Angus Mackenzie (the next in my series of alphabetical commanders, coming soon!) when I realized something.
Tumblr media
It’s crazy prices - Angus alone is over 150. Crazy expensive manabase (for maximum effectiveness), and basically pricey overall.
So, I wanna see if I can make a deck out of spare parts. Spare parts and under $50 dollars. So, here we go!
Tajic is a straightforward commander - get some dudes on the board, smash in.
We need Voltron parts, Tokens to go wide (plus go-wide support), some utility cards, and a cheap mana base. Let’s get to it!
Voltron
Tumblr media
Our plan is to get Tajic out, soup him up, and lay waste.
We want evasion, haste, and damage. Luckily, Tajic is indestructible, which makes him much stickier - we can get away with leaving him around.
We want Tajic to swing through without problems, so that means unblockable on trample, and we need to pile on the damage (we also want him swinging at +5/+5, but that’s a token problem).
For unblockability, we need Spectra Ward. Protection from all colors is functionally unblockable. Hot Soup doesn’t have a downside for us, Whispersilk Cloak is great, and Rogue’s Passage are great and cheap.
Inquisitor’s Flail has no downside and doubles it’s equipped creatures damage, and Sword of Vengeance gives us a boatload of buffs. Relic Seeker is a cheap option to fetch us equipment, and Thalia’s Lancers can fetch us any legendary including Tenza, Godo’s Maul which works great with Tajic.
Open the Armory and Godo, Bandit Warlord are cheap tutors.
Tokens
Tumblr media
Captain of the Watch; by Greg Staples
Sunhome Guildmage can pop out hastey tokens and buff the team. Captain of the Watch is one of my pet cards, as she’s a one-man army and buff. Myr Battlesphere can bring an army and clear blockers, Trading Post gives you options and very scary 0/1 goats (that can attack!), Chancellor of the Forge is a fatty with tokens, Darien King of Kjeldor just went down in price. Conqueror's Pledge, Nomad’s Assembly, and Increasing Devotion are one-card armies
Paying to make tokens with Master Trinketeer, Oketra the True, and Drogskol Cavalry are also options.
There’s also some options for tokens not involving creatures. Assemble the Legion, Mobilization are great.
Utility
Cast Out, Banishing Light and Oblivion Ring are some great removal options.
Tumblr media
While we wanna avoid board sweepers, as we’re so devoted to the board, we wanna try out a few - it’s not like Tajic will die! While OG Wrath is over budget, we can consider Rout and Sublime Exhalation. Solid choices both, and both budget.
Rapid fire:
Draw from Staff of Nin, Mentor of the Meek, Magus of the Wheel and Skullclamp is a must.
Firemane Angel and Frontline Medic are great Battalion creatures.
Forsake the Worldly, Oblation, Swords to Plowshares, Condemn, Darksteel Mutation, Duergar Hedge-Mage,
Marshal’s Anthem and Cathar’s Crusade are THE anthems.
Adriana Captain of the Guard wants you to hit everyone, and Nobilis of War and Veteran Swordsmith make sure your tokens hit hard. Bring in Phantom General and Intangible Virtue as well.
On the defense, use Pariah on Tajic (he can take it!), and Plea For Guidance to get that (and any other) enchantments.
Chandra, Flamecaller nets you cards and can spam out creatures.
Stonecloaker, Sun Titan, Archon of Justice, Boros Guildmage, Twilight Shepherd, Hellkite Charger and Hoard-Smelter Dragon I didn’t feel like sorting. But they’re fun.
Mana Base
This is gonna be interesting.
Take a look at all those dual lands. Rugged Prarie, Sacred Foundry, Plateau. Look at them and weep.
We’re a guildgate kinda deck.
Start with 15 Mountains and 15 Plains. Plus Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse. Then Needle Spires, Boros Guildgate and Garrison, Wind-Scarred Crag, Slayer’s Stronghold also help. Add some cycling lands and cheap utility lands as you see fit.
On the manarock side of things, we use Boros Keyrune and Cluestone, Darksteel Ingot, Commander’s Sphere and Mindstone for some light ramping.
After Building the Deck
We want Tajic, our commander, to hit the ground turn 4, and by turn 5 be a swinging 7/7. With some help, he should be able to kill another player with commander damage in 2-3 good swings. We also need him activated. If that means we swing in with a 0/1 Goat and a 1/1 Solider, do it. Make tokens often and fast - swarming is our backup plans. Don’t worry about board wipes, we have so many bodies on the field it’s easy to come back.
Bargain with your opponents - especially one’s in White or Black who can exile or -X/-X Tajic. Our only real fear is that, or Pacifism.
Diplomacy is quick and hard in EDH, and time your attacks to kill someone with another’s help.
Once you go a couple rounds with this deck, take it apart and analyze what works for you. Add some better cards from your collection, or experiment with some bulk you have.
Tumblr media
Tajic, Blade of the Legion; by James Ryman
So, there you have it. Under 50 bucks. Uses a lot of EDH staples that can be used later, and can easily be upgraded to a more token based strategy, or a better equipment package.
Well campers, that was fun. If you want me to feature another budget commander, let me know! Questions, comments, ideas, hit me with it, I’m always looking for stuff in my inbox!

Sorry wanted to condense my feelings into one reblog, instead of two comments. The commandsr should be at least green imo, also to restrict it to like 2 colors to keep the mana base slightly tamer. 4 mana is a sweet spot in commander right now cause of the increased access to 2 cost manarocks in EDH rn. Which 2 color combo with green? Literally any one would work.  3/2 first strike or hate on it if it is red, 2/3 deathtouch or menace in black, 2/2 flying or ward with blue, and 3/3 first strike or vigilance with white. While I do think competitive circles quickly pick up the card for good stuff decks. Idk if I would run it personally. it kinda feels like it violates the spirit of commander.
Let’s say there was a Legendary Creature printed with the text “If this creature is your Commander, your deck can have up to four copies of any non-basic land card.”
1) What colors would it be?
And
2) Would you play it?

Cube Rambling Part 3
Look at some pictures of cards! We hit the archetypes and their multicolor cards.
Welcome back! First of all, a note: I’ve decided to only have two three-color cards for the large factions, and use the two new slots for the tri-color manarock for those factions. Combining a need for some colorless fixing and not very many appealing Jeskai cards (that occupy different spaces), I think going down some cards for utility replacements will help overall.
Alright, so first the excel, in case you just want to take a quick glance and be done with this article:
Tumblr media
I’ll go in to each archetype with card images below!
Black Green: Aristo-counters
Tumblr media
“Aristocrats refers to an archetype” built around sacrificing your own creatures for value, either because the creature dying does something good for you, of the sacrifice outlet gives you a benefit.
This particular archetype focuses on using the Devour mechanic and other sources of sacrificing your own creatures to put counters on your other creatures. Reaper of the Wilds is a utility creature to help make the deck run smoother when you are doing your aristocrat thing. Sluiceway Scorpion is a good canidate to be sacrificed and a manasink in the late game. Marrow Chomper is the only BG Devour card  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Black Red: Aristo-pings
Tumblr media
While Black Green is looking at pumping up it’s creatures through sacrifice, Black Red is looking to turn those creatures into direct damage. Blazing Hellhound lets us kill our creatures. Deathbringer Thoctar is a powerful beater and death-fueled machine gun. Showstopper lets us set up powerful turns where an opponent is suddenly hanging on by a string.
Red Green: Hungry Beaters
Tumblr media
Red and Green is where the glut of the Devour cards are, and this archetype looks to take advantage of that to have the biggest creatures around. Godtracker of Jund benefits from other big creatures hitting the board. Hellkite Hatchling is a force to be reckoned with when it comes down on board with creatures to spare. Gruul Ragebeast lets the late-game creatures clear the way as they hit the board.
Green White: Populate
Tumblr media
Green White is one of the small factions, so it’s identity is it’s archetype. Tokens fits in well with the two larger factions: white instants and sorceries that make tokens are usefull in Jeskai as well, and green token making cards help fuel the Devour creatures in Jund. Selesnya Evangel makes tokens, helping keep up targets to populate and maintain a wide board. Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage makes tokens and populates them. Wayfaring Temple gives an endgame to the go-wide strategy in a gummed up board, and populates to boot!
Blue Red: Spell Volume
Tumblr media
Blue Red wants to reward you for having a slightly higher mix of instants and sorceries in your deck than usual. Enigma Drake get the benefit of a long term investment in spellslinging. Jori En can reward quickly playing out low drops, but she is maximized when you play instants on your opponent’s turn too. Nivix Cyclops can finish an opponent with the right setup, or just be a beater powered by your removal.
White Blue: Blink Tempo
Tumblr media
Using instants and sorceries to flicker your permanents for value and keeping your opponent on the back foot is the gameplan here. I think Reflector Mage is a safe card here, as there will only ever be one, and he can only be flickered a few times. Cloudblazer provides an evasive threat with massive value. Cunning Breezedancer evades and basks in the glow of it’s superprowess.
A note: while it’s not too apparent right now, this archetype is going to really shine when the mono-colored cards get added.
Red White: Aggro
Tumblr media
Boros gonna Boros. This archetype wants to be very aggressive with instants and sorceries to back it up. Honored Crop-Captain boosts the team as it smashes in. Blaze Commando has insane value as you burn your opponents. Intimidation Bolt can remove a threat and help you stabilize.
Blue Black: Cycling/Discard
Tumblr media
Discarding your cards is the name of the game for the Dimir archetype. It overlaps in it’s card value and slight control slant with Jeskai’s blue, and shares Jund black’s caring about cards in the graveyard. Shadowstom Vizir is the archetype defining card. Dimir Doppleganger lets you “reanimate” a discarded beater early. Jhessian Zombies helps fix mana in colors that lack it, while plaing in to the archetype.
And that’s how it’s shaken out! You can keep up with the current iteration of the Cube here! Feel free to leave your thoughts!
EDIT: Hey, Future Gitblog here. As I’m building this cube, I’m discovering that Part 2 has some issues with the conclusions I came to about numbers and distribution. I’ll make Part 4 about updates to that, but as my schedule gets a bit crazy I don’t know when I will have the next part up.
