deePRECONnaissance: Party with Power!
If you were handing out awards – as you’d be doing for a Game Award event – for the wildest decks to feature on Magic Arena then the following two are strong contenders. Probably the only contenders, really, though a lot of Arena’s history is surprisingly hard to find information about. Which is what prompted this series of posts. Screenshot time: Now that we’ve celebrated at The Game Awards,…

This is the beginning of my story called poppy seeds, yarrow oil!!! This is one of the ones I've been working on most recently, aside from my oc Aurelia's story!
Please excuse and spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes, and please do let me know if you enjoyed!! CCC:
This is in the pov of my oc Moxen Lance :33 also fuck me i forgot to tag it the first time (´-﹏-`;)
Since moving house, I haven't interacted with any neighbours much aside from one living most near to me. He was the only neighbour to welcome me when I first came to town, so I talked to him more and we became friends. aside from him i've hardly seen any other neighbours. until today.
I was out in my front garden planting some seeds for an annual flower that did not produce many last year. I was doing this when I felt a weight on my back and tail. I soon realise it is a small human child climbing on my back. I turn around and gently reposition them so I'm holding them properly in my arms. I glance around and look for their parents, quickly spotting a human walking down the road. assuming this was the child's mama, I wave. She glares at me. I put my attention back to the child, who was almost falling out of my arms trying to pick a flower, “Do you want a flower?” pointing to the flowers in case he was too young or did not speak common. “You can have one if you'd like, hm?” I said with a smile. they nodded, giggling and making grabbing motions towards a particular flower. My eschscholzia californica– peach poppies. Among all the other poppy varieties I have growing in my garden beds, those ones are some of my favourites too. I pluck a flower that looks alright. I make sure no bees are on it, handing it to the small human child. once i had done this, “is that your mama?” I asked. motioning toward the woman. The little boy confirmed this, waving at the woman, who now had a suspicious look on her face. she is staring at the abundance of poppy straw I have in my hand. I planned on offering the seeds to hypnos later today.
“Why don't you go show her your pretty orange flower, huh?” gently prompting them to go back to their mom, I set the child down on the floor.
I wave him goodbye when he turns back for a second. I look at him showing his mom the flower– “Mama look!” –His mom yanks his hand away and starts walking away with the small child dragging behind her. I frown. This disheartens me, but I know I cannot do anything about it.
I go back inside, walking up the stairs of my small cottage. I stand in front of my shrine dedicated to hypnos. I carefully pour the poppy seeds into the cottonwood horn I have on display. I offer a quick prayer to hypnos, as well as demeter and hermes. I usually just give prayers to those three. a part of me thought back to that small boy and the way his mother pulled him away oh so harshly. I offer a prayer to artemis.

i think i saw this when i was on my posting fast, but the funniest mtg listing i saw on shopgoodwill was a little stack of cards that had a few laid out and a few closeups, and the the closeups were like. shit ass throne of eldraine uncommons worth pennies but there was a visible dockside extortionist (approx $80 card) in a single pic of the whole deck. i still wonder if that was intentional lmao
#sgw is so funny because sometimes you see a lot of 15 art series cards listed for $10 + $15 shipping like girrrrrrrl no#and sometimes there are literal dual lands and moxen up for bid#anyway. i would. never spend money on mtg. and you have no proof i ever have.#mtg blogging

Note
Is there a reason you are more willing to deviate from the original when you make lotuses than moxen? Every Mox (other than Max Lotus) is an artifact with mana value 0 which taps for one mana. But with Lotuses you've made ones which tap for more, less, or a variable amount of mana. You've made Lotuses which don't sacrifice. You've made Lotuses which are Land and Equipment. You've made Lotuses with many different mana values.
We've found the core identifier of Lotuses is produces three mana of the same color.

Hot on Their Heels: Lap 2 Runners Up
~
Our runners up this week are @cthulhusaurusrex, @nine-effing-hells, and @xenobladexfan!
@cthulhusaurusrex — Pole Position
Somehow one of two cards named Pole Position submitted this week. Not that I mind, it's a fun term, and it feels very appropriate. This is a wonderful little bundle of effects that really puts the screws on your opponent if you can keep up the momentum. And that instantly makes the name so, so very evocative that I can't help but be enraptured by it. It starts your engines, rewards you with a little extra stopping power for keeping up the pressure, and once you hit your stride and it's done its job, you can cash it in for an extra card so you don't peter out. This really distills the gameplan of speed down to a science, and I think that's pretty cool.
@nine-effing-hells — Mox Fordite
Love me a good reference to fordite, and where better than the vehicle set all about vehicles? For the uninitiated, fordite is a colloquial name for caked-on paint slag from automotive manufacturing plants that's been cut into jewelry. It's pretty stuff, even if it's definitely a bit unusual. And this one is pretty unusual, too. A hard turn limit before a mox can start producing mana is definitely a good balancing factor, although in exchange once it gets there it can always produce mana unlike the more conditional moxen variants. And while an extra mana starting at at minimum turn 4 isn't going to upend the game, in a format with such a ubiquitousness of exhaust effects, every bit of mana counts at all stages. I think the real value here, though, is just the fact that this can start your engines for zero mana. The ability to weave it into any given turn or just windmill slam it turn 0 for a bit of affinity is a great bit of utility.
@xenobladexfan — Well-Oiled Machine
I'm belatedly realizing that I had zero SYE cards in winners and three here. Whoops, I guess this is just Speed Hour, then. Oh well. Still, they're all killer designs, this one included. Strionic Resonator is an old favorite of mine, and this carries on that legacy. There are in fact a lot of triggered abilities running around this set, notably including—as you've helpfully highlighted—speed increasing. Being able to cut entire turn or two off of hitting max speed is a huge deal, although the upfront cost means the most aggressive speed decks probably won't see too big a difference. And while the normal ability can't touch exhaust abilities, the machine's own exhaust has no such restrictions, which is oh so very juicy. This one's a house in and of itself, but the sheer explosivity potential on display here is dizzying, and I'd absolutely love to tool around with this engine.
~
And that's a photo finish! It's not done yet though, as I'll be cruising over to the discord to take commentary requests for the next 12 hours. Drop on by! —@spooky-bard

I got bored so I ranked how strong the mana rocks in Commander are (including mana crypt and jeweled lotus)
mana crypt.
sol ring with no downside
sol ring.
mana crypt with downside (costs 1)
Mox Diamond
mana of any color can be added, puts a land in your bin which can be good
chrome mox
always taps for a color you want, but imprint can be rough later
mox opal
requires more set up than chrome and diamond
mox amber
i'd personally put amber tied with opal, but i think opal is just slightly stronger
arcane signet
its goated
the guild talismans
flexibility is great
paradise mantle
like if mox amber and arcane signet had an unwanted child
Mind stone
the fact you can sac it to draw a card makes it better than #13
thought vessel
we've all been there
all of the guild signets
i'd say these cost like 2 and a half mana, but at least they're untapped
everflowing chalice
the child of paradise mantle if they allowed it to breed
the tapped diamonds
these are bad, they're effectively 3 mana
What i didn't include:
jeweled lotus
this is a ritual
mana vault
this is a ritual
medallions
cost reducers are better than rocks in most cases, but arent rocks
monoliths
these are combo pieces
rocks that cost 3
i'd be here all day
Negative 6 billion: mox tantalite
the forgettable suspend moxen. suspend is bad
sol talisman
sol ring with suspend also isnt good
This is just my opinion, I am open to discussion.

What I'm about to say comes from mostly theory crafting. I haven't actually gone to Thunder Junction explicitly to look into this yet, but my interest was piqued when I last was there. It's going to be rambley, so watch out.
I think something happened to Thunder Junction.
First, the questions.
Why did the Cactusfolk, the only folk native to Thunder Junction, sprout after the Omenpaths open up?
Why did Thunder also only appear after the Omenpaths?
Speaking of, why do so many Omenpaths lead to Thunder Junction?
Why is the oldest folkmade thing there a Vault from the Coin Empire?
So, for those who don't know, there is a massive Vault called Maag Taranau on Thunder Junction. It is believed to be the product of an ancient empire, dubbed by my colleague as the Coin Empire. It's the oldest structure on the plane as far as their records go. Which isn't very far, but it's still noteworthy.
The rumors about what is inside this Vault are rabid. If you've ever spent any time on Thunder Junction after the Vault fell, you've probably overheard one of these rumors. They range from weapons of mass destruction to full collections of Moxen. You'd think these rumors would be unfounded, but I've seen immensely terrifying weaponry and ancient artifacts on Thunder Junction with the exact same style of metal craft as the Maag Taranau. I've even touched one of these artifacts, it was called a Torpor Orb. There was an inscription engraved on it that started me down crafting this whole hypothesis. “Devour the hope of a world and it will bow before you.”
The Coin Empire was an ancient and cruel empire. From what I've been told by Quintorius Kand, another Lorehold mage who's been primarily researching the empire, the empire itself was multiplanar. They would trick and force their will over others, colonizing an unknown number of planes. I won't dwell too deeply on it, mostly because that's Quint's project, but the Coin Empire is relevant to my theory about Thunder Junction's history.
I believe that the Coin Empire did something to Thunder Junction to secure a location for their Vault.
It would make sense. The biggest rumor surrounding the Vault is why it was originally opened. The rumor goes that there was a living member, probably the last living member, of the Coin Empire frozen in there. Making this Vault immensely valuable to the Empire back when it was first created.
In order to prevent meddling, either the Empire could've killed all folk on Thunder Junction and somehow prevented the Plane from developing further or caught the Plane before it would birth folk and somehow stopped it. The Inscription of the Torpor Orb, the Orb itself, and the other powerful artifacts in the vault could support that they might be able to do this. Of course, the inscription could've been written to be less literal. "World" represents the folk of a plane and not literally the plane itself.
However, it would help answer my questions. The reason why Thunder and Cactusfolk showed up only after the Omenpaths and not before could be because the Coin Empire put the plane in some kind of sleep state. As folk moved into the plane, it woke up.
The reason why Omenpaths are so common could be a mixture of the Coin Empire's planar transportation methods, what the Empire did to the plane, and maybe even the plane itself.
Of course, I have very little to back this up. The motive to harm Thunder Junction in some way makes sense, but I don't have any evidence beyond inscriptions and potential capabilities. And, sadly, I don't know if I ever will. There's very little history on Thunder Junction. If there were any evidence of planar devastation, it would be long gone by now.
All of this also could be completely coincidental. The Thunder and Cactusfolk sprouting when they did, the Omenpaths, the Vault itself. They could all have completely separate reasons to happen the way they did, but I personally believe that the Multiverse rarely works in coincidence.
Sorry about rambling and probably overthinking this much about something that probably doesn't matter to most of you. I couldn't focus on my work while this was in my head.

trying to get into cEDH deckbuilding is so frustrating because i keep finding commanders that combo out in cool and unique ways, but then realize (in this order) that:
wait, that combo costs like 4/5/6 mana, how do i get that much mana by turn 2/3?
oh right, by proxying spending literally $1000 on various Moxen, duh, why would i think i can get into a new competitive format without selling my kidney to afford a manabase, silly me
[if not running blue] ah shit, wait, even if i do get the Magical Christmas Land draw and go off on turn 2, i have no interaction and fold to 20 different common answers that everyone knows to hold onto as soon as i tell them who my commander is. why am i not picking a commander that can just run Thoracle?
[if running blue] wait, why am i jumping through all these hoops when Thoracle is faster + more consistent?
why am i even trying to build a combo around my commander when picking some random UBx commander and building around Thoracle + Consultation + tutors + counters is so much more effective?
why am i even trying to get into cEDH if every decklist is solved and most of them aren't as good as a generic wincon not even tied to a specific commander?
why am i even alive?

As I try to make sense of "losing" >$100 on a card I was unlikely to ever sell (I opened a Mana Crypt from a Mystery Booster draft in March 2020), did you know that Mana Crypt is now one of 5 cards that are banned/restricted/illegal in every format and not on the reserved list?
Also, did you know that the Canadian Highlander point system values Mana Crypt (5 points) higher than the Moxen (3), but below Thassa's Oracle (7)? Perhaps I should get rid of any errant Oracles before the next announcement.

OK SO I LOVE FOXSTAR BUT FOR REMUS AND READER I LIKE THE LUNARFOX ONE AND FOR THE SOLE PURPOSE OF THE NOTE WHERE READER KEPT REFERRING TO REMUS AS “LUNA” AND I THIUGHT IT WAS SO CUTE
so my ideas are
LunarFae (if i did this right Fae can also be referred to as fairies but i don’t know for sure but reader is part fairy so i want to incorporate on that too)
LunaVix (vixen and luna idk)
and wolfsfae (so kinda like wolfsbane but wolfsfae again hinting at reader being a fairy)
OK IM STILL COMING UP WITH IDEAS NEXT IM THINKING OF ALL OF THEM
AGAIN PLEASE GIVE US SUGGESTIONS I LOVE SEEING THEM!!!
Ahhhh! We've got so many new options guys! AND so many creative ones too, I'm thinking I may make a poll or something for you guys to choose because I feel like you are the ones that should make this choice.
"The fandom chooses the ship name, Mr. Potter"
Anyway, some of the the best so far ahead:
Sirius x Vixen: Foxstar
Remus x Vixen:
Moonfox
Redmoon
Bloodmoon
Wolfshine
MoonShine
Lunarfox
Moxen
Lunarfae
Wolfae
All of them are super creative, although I must agree with @cometsghost that the fact that Wolfae sounds like Wolfbane is almost perfect because the entire drama in the forest happened because she wanted to help Kles with the potion.
Remus x Vixen x Sirius:
Cerberus
Love Puppies
Redmoonstar
Vulcanis
Celestial Trinity
Cosmic canines
Tagging some of you guys that I think might be interested: @starchaser-lily @cometsghost @warcelia @loving-and-dreaming @jaylienpotter @blacksgarden @themarauderswife7 @lampthemacarenagod @msblacklupin @imdoingbetternow @chellyrps @bobthefrog @sseleniaa @keira-kaz2y5 @xluansstuff @kissmeunicornbaobei @remussbitch

The year is 20XX. With the printing of Universes Beyond: Garfield and Friends, the lowly Food token is now the best card in Magic: the Gathering. The remaining Treasure players are hunted down and forcibly made to eat the delicious cards. At the yearly Spoiler Panel, President MaRo announces Unfinity 2 Ft. Ring Pops (tm), with the original five Moxen being reprinted as Ring Pops. Jace still hasn’t reappeared in a story article, but Fblthp has been in every single one.

I'm doing research into earlier mtg metagames! (thought it would be neat to look into :3)
1994-1995 was the first year where they ran an MTG championship. Everything was legal, which tbf was like soooo few sets but that included the power 9! (restricted to one) 😨
The metagame revolved around the Channel Fireball combo, which could win on turn 1 with a good hand of lotus channel and fireball. 💥

Even without the turn 1 kill through lotus mana, any health lead turns channel fireball into a lethal combo from any point of the game! To capitalize on this, the fireball decks of the time ran a pretty cohesive red green aggro shell around the combo to try and force through quick damage.
Losing a game in grands to WHIRLING DERVISH BEATS must've been fun, what a dated card lmaoo

The tournament winning list (a control list with a lot of what we'd now call stax pieces) ran a bunch of artifact ramp (moxen!) and a few different lifegain pieces to try and stave off the aggro (and the fireball) in the early turns (Zuran orb, Ivory Tower) and aimed to slow the game to a halt after getting an advantageous board state through stasis and winter orb!
The list:
The 1994 Championships wikipedia article has a pretty wonderful writeup on the matches if you're interested. The last game of grand finals was decided by a Stasis with Karma on the field for lethal (what a funny line!)
Which makes perfect sense! The control deck beating combo would become a core tenet of mtg in the years to come :D
god mana draining a fireball mustve felt fantastic

one of my favorite somewhat unhealthy coping mechanisms is online shopping but for maximum time wasted to money spent outcomes, i use shopgoodwill to really get some good time wasting in
anyway... it's funny that in the not even very long amount of time i've been scoping magic product for weird deals on there, moxen and dual lands show up WAY more often than you'd think
it's like... on given week, it's random boxes of draft chaff with no goodies ever going for $30, actual huge collections (almost certainly cases of someone died and their stuff got bulk donated) going for a few hundo, the occasional actually very valuable single, never fewer than 8 copies of the arena of the planewalkers board game, and sometimes a chandra funko pop
#mtg blogging#i obviously cannot recommend either sgw or mtg to someone otherwise free of this burden#but if you have a collection of something of any recognizable brand... at least 40% of the time the listers have no idea what its worth#which is hilarious both in the 'random pile of cards with a blurry dockside extortionist in the bg' way and a '6 art cards for $15' way
