Deck Tech - Mono White Equipment Support
Equipment, equipment, equipment! Whether your deck has five Masterpiece Swords of X and Y with GrandPrix Stoneforge Mystic, or a budget equipment package.
This list will detail out two synergy sections - best options, and budget (under $1 for TCGPlayer mid at time of posting.
BEST OPTIONS
Stoneforge Mystic
Tumblr media
The Golden Standard of equipment synergy. A card that broke standard. Banned in Modern as the format started.
If you have nothing else in you deck but Stoneforge, and 4-5 equipment (of variable uses, Swiss Army style), you’re already doing fine. Mini-equipment package is fine, and becomes nightmarishly more effective the more synergy you have.
Score: A+
Puresteel Paladin
Tumblr media
Ah, the fleeting moments of hope against the oncoming of New Phyrexia. Between the Allies of BFZ, and the Mirrodin Pure resistance.
If you’re running 6-8 equipment (an equipment heavy deck), plus a “normal” mana rock group (3-5 in my experience, more in decks that need ramp or Brago’s Mass Blink abuse), plus any artifact creatures, it’s almost guaranteed to get you metalcraft. It saves you a small fortune on equip costs, especially more prohibitive costs (anything >3).
Score: B
Stonehewer Giant
Tumblr media
A beefier counterpart of the Mystic, this Giant trades coming down later for a more impressive ability and body - this one won't die to Anger of the Gods (or any small board wipes in your meta)
Score: A
Steelshaper’s Gift
Tumblr media
If your Stonehewer Giant got Plowshared'd the second it hit the field, or your Mystic was swept up in a Languish, sometimes what you need is a way to get and equipment IN YOUR HAND. Steelshaper hails from Fifth Dawn, a lovingly artifact heavy set (the block that gave us the Swords of X and Y), and is great for every equipment toolkit.
Score: A
Enlightened Tutor
Tumblr media
I consider it equal to Gift, in allowing you to topdeck whatever artifact you want. Hitting Enchantments is a plus, and helps in Voltron decks that also want Auras.
Score: A- (for the once in a while of someone messing with yout topdeck)
Fountain Watch
Tumblr media
Mass artifact protection is great against targeted removal a la Disenchant and Naturalize, but artifact sweepers, like one of Austere Command, hurt us just fine.
Score: C- (it's the first (and worst) of our artifact protection)
Leonin Abunas
Tumblr media
Almost strictly better than Fountain Watch (-1 power, different creature types), pick this when you have to choose between them, or have some cat synergy (with that new-fangled Regal Caracel).
Score: C+
Nahiri the Lithomancer
Tumblr media
The Big Momma of Artifact decks, she does it all - protects herself, lets you have equipped weenies, plays expensive equipment for you (or recover it from the graveyard), and her Ult is a beating machine.
Score: A-
Leonin Shikari
Tumblr media
This little kitty makes combat an absolute nightmare for opponents. With Puresteel Paladin, it makes it even worse.
(thanks @towel-guy for catching I missed this kick-butt creature)
Score: A+
BUDGET
While cheaper overall than the "best options", all of these should be considered for the deck (like Sigarda's Aid).
Scored with (Budget/NonBudget) in consideration
Sigarda’s Aid
Tumblr media
It's a turn 1 play, it's ability makes your equipments into instants. It's from a set currently in Standard, and is cheap as hell. Get four for yourself, and four for a friend. In 5 years they'll be Steelshaper's Gift - good EDH utility card going for five bucks. The more expensive/vulnerable equipment you're packing, the better this gets.
Score: A/A+ (Budget/NonBudget)
Sram, Senior Edificer
Tumblr media
Solid draw for Voltron decks, and just as useful for pure equipment decks. White needs draw, and Sram provides it.
(again, thanks @towel-guy for catching I missed this)
Score: A+/A+
Relic Seeker
Tumblr media
If you get it early (or after a board wipe) there's usually a player open for this to trigger. There'll be games where it's just a bear.
Score: C+/C- (great when it works, EDH dead weight otherwise)
Steelshaper Apprentice
Tumblr media
Slow, mana intesive - emblematic of budget of EDH. Solid choice for tight budgets, better options for tutoring.
Score: B/D-
Taj-Nar Swordsmith
Tumblr media
Mana-intensive, but workable for late game, or mid game to get a protection out, like the Swords, Whispersilk Cloak, or Boots/Greaves.
Score: B/D
Ironclad Slayer
Tumblr media
Solid equipment (and Aura) recovery. Nothing to gush over, but Pauper legal, and draft fodder, so easy to get (there may be copies laying around your LGS)
Score: C/C (lower if your opponents don't blow your toys up)
Open the Armory
Tumblr media
Steelshaper's Gift 2.0. 'Nuff said.
Score: A-/B+
Brass Squire
Tumblr media
Cute as a button, and a combo of equip-discount, and battle trick. And if you face damage or -X removal and have toughness improving gear or Hexproof/Shroud, Presto! - you have some removal dodge.
Score: B/B-
Dispatch
Tumblr media
If you're gonna have this many artifacts, might as well abuse metalcraft. Manarocks and artifact lands help this too, and don't weaken the deck. Swords/Path with no downside is awesome.
Score: A/A
Golden Wish
Tumblr media
Time to fill your sideboard will all the niche tools that you didn't have room to maindeck. Wish choices must still be EDH legal (no doubles or color identity clashes) but give you an even bigger toolbox to play with, one that can't be milled or stolen.
Score: B/B
Indomitable Angel
Tumblr media
As always, protection. You’ll probably have metalcraft the turn or the turn after you get this out, so go for it if your playgroup is running artifact removal, bring an angel.
Score: B/B
Open the Vaults
Tumblr media
When someone runs a Shatter Spree, bring back your toys. It’s also reciprocal, so play it so your benefit is maximized.
Score: B/B
Spectral Guardian
Tumblr media
The fiscally cheapest of the artifact protections. If you wanna try out artifact protection against your groups removal, this is a good creature to start with.
Score: C/C-
That’s all folks!

One not so secret about myself is that I love card games. Don’t get me wrong, videogames come first, but I find the occasional card game a great mental exercise. They can be diverting and many have great fanbases. And sure, some CCGs are more popular than others. One pretty much everybody knows is Magic the Gathering. I grew up with that particular game, though recently I’ve become much more of a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! The reason I mention popular card games is I feel ManaRocks takes many, many cues from the well known ones, notably Magic.

ManaRocks is developed by Brazilian team Rockgames, and it’s very clear to me they’re familiar with Magic. Though ManaRocks isn’t a complete clone, it shares many similarities. Fantastical creatures, mana costs for playing cards, monsters not being able to attack and then defend, the list goes on. And while I do feel this game does a few things all its own, part of me feels it doesn’t do enough.

ManaRocks starts with a quick tutorial showing you the basics. Unlike Magic, you accumulate more mana every turn without having to play it from your deck. Cards you activate give you more mana, and by playing enough cards of your element, you’ll power up your hero’s special abilities. In the tutorial, I was a green elf maiden, so I could summon tokens with my ability. The abilities also power up over time, but I never had a match last long enough to see how that worked. There are other elemental focuses, such as dark necromancers and wily blue sorcerers.

While I appreciate the tutorial and Story Mode in ManaRocks, which lets you fight set battles to unlock cards and additional decks, the real focus is Ranked play. This is the only mode that lets you accumulate experience, for one. What’s interesting about this mode is that it isn’t 1 v 1 battles. It forces you to play with a partner against another duo, either a real person or CPU. Funny enough, Yu-Gi-Oh! fans have been craving actual tag team duels forever, so it’s cool to see that here. Unfortunately, in effect it’s not that interesting. You can’t really communicate with your partner, other than with preset emojis. And though you can use cards your partner has activated, I was always hesitant to do so. Play any card game in real life long enough, and you’ll learn about card etiquette. Touching someone else’s cards without permission is a no no for me, even online.

I do appreciate the variety of cards in ManaRocks, as well as the artwork. This is an attractive game, and it’s nice that it’s free. What frustrated me is that I got a couple press codes to unlock more goodies in my time with the game, and neither worked. Also, when you start ManaRocks, you have to provide an email. After I did so, I never got any confirmation email about starting the game. So it’s clear Rockgames still has a few bugs to iron out. Perhaps most egregious was when I played a Ranked battle and lost for an unknown reason. My opponent hadn’t played any cards to deal damage to my character, yet suddenly I took massive direct damage and lost in the course of two turns. That after being in the lead for most of the game. I checked, and my opponent didn’t seem to have any ability that corresponded to that loss either.
If you’re eager for a free to play digital card game, ManaRocks can definitely satisfy that itch. Just don’t expect anything genre defining. ManaRocks definitely plays it safe, but some players might prefer that. If that’s you, feel free to check the game out on Steam. Here’s hoping the game continues to evolve and grow better over time.
