thinking about the Manager and the Lobby Boy eating out of cans over the sink in silence and how they would both think that was a perfect date.

“You found it on the beach? You know, when most people take a walk on the beach, they pick up seashells.” with some managerboy?
Can you believe I've never put the freaks from my podcast on a beach before?
Tumblr media
“You found it on the beach?” The Manager lowers her sunglasses a fraction of an inch, just to stare over the frames at her Lobby Boy. “You know, when most people take a walk on the breach, they pick up seashells.”
The Lobby Boy shrugs. His prolonged silence tells the Manager that no, actually, he’s not going to explain where the body exists on the beach. For the best, she muses, going back to her magazine. She doesn’t want to even think about death, decay, or the disgusting process of death on her day off.
The Lobby Boy seems to realize she’s not going to ask. So he settles on the sand and watches the waves roll in.
All things considered, it’s nice. A little gray around the edges and there’s a cold fog rolling in off the shore. But the day’s promised to warm up and the Manager’s here to see it.
It’s not often they get a day off. Let alone a day off together. And, today, the Owner isn’t allowed to invite himself along.
The Manager smirks, imagining him carrying luggage and obeying the front desk bell. It might teach him some manners.
The Lobby Boy lays back in the sand, looking up at her.
“If you’re bored, why don’t you do something,” she suggests. “Go for a swim.”
The Lobby Boy blinks. He’s not used to freedom.
The Manager turns a page in her magazine. The candy pink font advertises a relationship test. She fills it out mentally with the Owner and The Hotel Herself’s personal drama. The quiz decides, at the end, that the relationship is in shambles and recommends some hot date night ideas to rekindle the spark.
The Manager promptly closes her magazine. That’s more than enough of that.
The Lobby Boy is gone.
Rolling her eyes, the Manager scans the beach. Maybe he really did go for a swim. The might be nice. Clean him up a little instead of being such a sweaty mess.
But no, there he is. On the beach.
The Manager watches with mild amusement. He’s digging a hole. There’s no reason for it just handfuls of sand and sea-smoothed stone.
He looks up, briefly, and waves at her. The Manager raises a hand in return.
And then he’s back to digging his hole.
The Manager glances up, checking the weather. Not warm yet. But soon. Soon.
She takes her magazine, flipping to the page with the quiz. This time, she goes through with answers based on herself and the Lobby Boy. The quiz diagnoses their relationship as “totally steamy” and “built to last.” The Manager decides she’s done with the entire thing and throws it down.
Getting up from her spot, she decides to watch the Lobby Boy’s progress. She stands at the edge of the hole, now knee deep and with room for two.
“Hi,” he says, continuing his work.
“Why?” She kneels down, stones scraping her knees.
“Dunno. Just felt right.” He looks up at her. “Wanna help?”
Without answering, the Manager joins the Lobby Boy in the hole. With sand under her nails, she feels like she understands.

Mark and Kelly got married yesterday and since they met when we cast her as the sentient ship in our first podcast I put that entire first season of ToT on your feed.
There is a song in the first episode that I only wrote a couple phrases of, and Mark improvised a melody. A few years later we had the opportunity to flesh out the song and his brother arranged the music for it.
Yesterday the danced their first dance as husband and wife to that song, 'Pale Blue Dot', as I watched completely overwhelmed.
There isn't much fortune or glory in podcasting, just all of us having some silly fun together, which is more than enough for me. But watching them dance to that song almost ten years after recording that first episode is something indescribable that I will remember for the rest of my life.
