Rewatching the 2nd hunger games film, Catching Fire for the first time in a years here r my thoughts chronologically, & I've got a lot to say about this one:

- They actually show Katniss's PTSD, flashbacks and nightmares.

- The trauma of all the victors. Haymitcch is right they're not winners, they're survivors. Nobody ever wins.

- Effie actually kinda realizing the games arent the honour shes been indoctrinated to think they are.

i cant stop thinking about guard dog brian.. like he considers himself tim and jays attack dog and their guardian angel, watching them from afar as he gets more and more fucked up and more and more obsessive

jay of course would have no problems with any of this, until the hooded man starts trying to keep him from investigating. then we would get jay trying to escape and go to the woods, thinking hes so smart for outsmarting the hooded man and getting away in order to continue filming and searching for clues. brian naturally knows exactly where he is still, but lets jay think he doesnt if it means he can keep a better eye on him.

Ugh okay, I know the writers bring her character back, but that is a past Gamora who does not even remember her recent team mates, the Guardians of the Galaxy. And this new Gamora does not show up till 7~ movies later. I absolutely hated watching Gamora die and then the movie showing her abusive dad crying over her, after he physically and mentally abused her for years and literally murdered her "for the greater good". And then of course her boyfriend Peter hear the news and has a mental breakdown. His sadness is so great that the good guys are unable to stop Gamora's dad and thus Endgame happens. I completely understand if you don't want to add her, I just wanted to give her a shot. My anger really stems from Gamora being an abuse survivor, then has to meet up with her abuser who murderers her in cold blood. Especially since she was one of the main characters in Guardians of the Galaxy. And I get the feeling that the writers for Infinity War/Endgame were not in communication or agreement with the Guardians of the Galaxy writer since GotG's writer had to bring her back out of nowhere for his story to work.

Gamora was raised to be a living weapon and she escaped her abusive life and found a new family who loved her and was even repairing her relationship with her (also abused) sister. Her murder was ALL ABOUT her abuser and how he felt sort of conflicted about throwing her off a cliff - and then all about her boyfriend and how upset he was about her death. Like I even liked her and Peter's relationship, but she also had her sister and friends and we never get into how her death affected them. We never get into how horrific her death was or how tragic it is that her life was cut short and what a waste to the universe it was because she was such a hero. It's just about the men's feelings. Ugh. (also yes technically she was brought back from a different timeline, but it's also very clear that Gamora is a different person, with her own story, and that og Gamora is dead and never coming back).

her getting fridged in love and thunder made me so mad because 1. The movie was about her! I know it's a Thor movie but they literally advertised her as a female Thor. And her conflict about her own mortality is at the core of the film. 2. She dies for not just one man, but two men's character arcs! When she dies, it serves as a redemption for the main villain, and it shows Thor a lesson about how being with her wouldnt make him happy. Because she literally died and now he cant be with her! And because of her death, the villain decides not to kill all the gods. So it could have been a self sacrifice except, oh no! She dies from cancer! A completely arbitrary death!

this movie was recommended to me by an old friend of mine and i decided to give it a try. it's on youtube for freebies and it's relatively short, just 80ish minutes, so i figured i'd watch tongiht and .fuck. i've watched zero day as well and honestly ive always considered that movie to be really well done in terms of its style and the message it's trying to convey, but yk. i cant really be vocal about it since tcc freaks are all over it like ants or perhaps flies. anyway i went into this movie knowing that the subject matter was similar to zero day but i was genuinely not prepared for this at all

i think a lot of it comes from identifying way too much with matt. theyre making a student film about getting revenge on a gang of bullies, and theyre the kind of kids that are like. really aggressiveand violent with it idk thats the best way i can describe it. and i feel like.. the red flags were there but people just didnt clock it until it was too late. and by then, like. the damage was already done. and i know saying 'oh i relate to matt' is suspicious but i mean it more in the way of how he just straight up loses his grip on reality. and how he doesn't even notice until it's practicallytoo late for him. and when he does notice it's so clear how frightened he is. and maybe im just hella projecting but i think the bullying they faced affected matt really badly and his escapism was through movies. he's got shit like uhh. pulp fiction, requiem for a dream, thats all shit that was posters in his room. and then he's making logos for his film that are riffing off of other films, like back to the future, and star wars, and shti like that and. owen talks about how matt acts like he's in a movie all the time, cameras or not, being totally fucking crazy like he's acting in a movie and how he doesnt know when matt is being genuine or if he's just acting, and. jesus man that hit home. like i think a lot of it is just that i have Movie Autism i fucking love moveis and so seeing all the movie references made me really relate to this guy but also the fucking escapism that devolves into delusion and being unable to separate that from reality and not even knowing who you really are anyomre. that part hit home i think. and i just look back on how fucked up i was as recently as a year ago and i think to myslef thank god i noticed. like, thank god i was able ot realize what was happening before i totally lost my grip on reality. because the part where he realized that he fit the exact definition of the way dave cullen described real life shooters that i will not name (they read an excerpt from that book! with permisison from cullen himself. idk i just think it's interesting and says a lot about the writers of the film that they reached out to thewriter and asked permission to read an excerpt in their movie. idk) and the fucking genuine emotion when he says that to owen and then owen just does not care what if i started sobbing right now

im surprised at how. idk. theres a scene at the end where he does kill someone, and i was expecting it to be like a total bloodbath (again, my only frame of reference is zero day which i havent watched in. idfk a year) but no. and yet somehow it's so much more impactful than the end of zero day. because he starts chasing after his friend and when he has him cornered and owen is fucking frightened and genuinely i think matt just doesnt Get It. he doesnt understand. and he goes 'what are oyu doing? its me!' adn fuck dude i know im reading way too far into this but like . hes saying that hes been like this the whole time! and hes confused why owen changed on a dime ebcause to himthis is the next logical step!! fuck!!!! and the worst part is i knew it was fucking coming adn yet i was telling myself no way. no way.

will i watch it again? probably not the whole way through, because i did just straight up start sobbing (and i've only cried atlike. two movies? three maybe?) and it fucked me up. but my god that movie was fantastic. if you're comfortable with the material it goes over and are able to stomach it, i do highly recommend it. fuckin hell what a film

i genuinely think what makes so people uncomfortable with marnie is that the film stays with her the whole time and shows misogyny from a woman’s perspective and she’s not just victimized by a man and discarded…. she continues to occupy the center of the film and there’s no formal ending to her story really so the thought of what’s going to happen when the camera leaves is so anxiety provoking to a viewer.

when a movie is from a man’s POV it’s so much easier to feel distanced from misogyny and you can just watch like Oh that was wrong!…but i’ll move on and marnie NEVER gives you that relief or escape. NOTHING is easy in marnie and the way the man is shot so that you can’t tell exactly how you’re supposed to feel about him, whether he’s a genuine love interest or a villain forces you to realize that that’s what marnie feels too! that’s what men are! theyre human beings and you can’t just look at one in real life and go oh easy that’s a villain. that’s another person and you cant immediately tell how much harm they are capable of inflicting on you or where their limit to harming you is, if they end up having one.

bones and all + generational trauma

p.s lots of spoilers for the film in here !!!

this film is one that will never leave u. a breathtaking combination of utterly perfect writing, directing, acting and producing. i dont remember the last time a film made me cry as hard as this one did. ive seen many different interpretations of this film in various corners of the internet and wanted to write about them.

one of my favourite outlooks is that the characters' indescribable need to eat human flesh translates to generational trauma. both central characters (maren and lee) suspect they inherited it from one of their parents, and both were severely let down by them. maren was abandoned by her mother before she was old enough to remember her, and her father refused to tell her anything about her mother (and eventually abandoned her, leaving her birth certificate for her to find). lee's father was a drunk who snapped one night and hit lee and his younger sister kayla, and then tried to consume lee after kayla left to get help; revealing that he, too, was an 'eater' - the term the characters use to describe those with an uncontrollable urge to eat other humans.

the main story of the film focuses on maren and lee travelling across america together to find maren's mother based on the information on maren's birth certificate. maren tracks down her grandmother, and learns that she adopted maren's mother after she was found outside of a firestation as an infant. this insinuates maren's mother was abandoned because one of her parents knew what she was, knew that being an eater was passed down in generations and did not want to shoulder the burden - and ends up doing the same to her own daughter, abandoning maren with her father. maren's grandmother tells maren that her mother admitted herself to a mental health hospital.

maren reuniting with her mother is a harrowing scene for me to be honest. the suspense makes your hair stand up on the back of your neck until the camera eventually pans round to show maren's mother with two stumps instead of hands and wrists. this woman locked herself up and then ate her own hands ?!?!! we know from sully (a creepy old man eater who essentially stalks maren) that the need for human flesh only increases as an eater ages, so maren's mother has been driven slightly mad by this. the nurse gives maren a letter her mother wrote 15 years prior, in case maren ever came to see her. the letter is absolutely heart breaking. it ends with maren's mother trying to eat her in a desperate attempt to remove her from this world because she knows the pain of being what they are in it.

afterwards, maren and lee fight in the parking lot. lee tells maren their options are to eat people, kill themselves or lock themselves up like maren's mother. and maren states 'im not going to be her'. that was my OH moment. she sees what this condition does. and she decides, in that second, that she wont let herself be victim of it anymore. she wont continue the cycle. she wont release the trauma onto others the way her family has, which has only resulted in her taking the majority of the pain alone. and she deserves it. she never asked for it, cant control it, and it consumes her (sorry for the pun). in this scene i couldnt feel anything but joy for her. that she was choosing no.

and her and lee try SO HARD it nearly kills me. they do, they get a flat and get jobs and are happy. but in That Scene, that fucking scene, it all comes crashing down. they tried so hard to escape the cycle but it (sully) finds them anywhere and when it does, every scrap of happiness is wiped from their lives. its so unbearably tragic. they left it behind them, they chose no, they chose happiness but the universe was simply not kind enough. generational trauma cant be banished forever. it can be repressed and ignored but never gone forever, and it can and does destroy them.

this interpretation is not only found in maren and her family though. its very much found in lee too. his father was an alcoholic, hit him and tried to eat him alive. it would be quite impossible not to discuss lee when investigating themes of generational trauma in this film. lee takes his father and leaves him tied up in a barn for three days while the police investigate him. when lee returns to the barn, he could tell his father 'knew' what was going to happen, knew he was going to be eaten, so clearly lee got this condition from his father. i think lee is different from maren in the sense that he showcases how generational trauma can bring out the bad in those affected by it. he literally ate his own dad. maren, at first, was not angry with her mother, she wanted to know if she was alive, if she could give maren answers about their condition. but lee killed his father, using the pain they both bear as his method. he uses it against him, he turns it violent.

lee also has kayla to worry about. his little sister, oblivious to the fact that her father and brother are cannibals. she tells maren that her father ran away after hitting lee and herself - a lie lee told her. she also says that lee has spent almost all of the time between then and the present away from home. it's not stated, but it's my belief that lee did this to protect her. at the end of the film, sully returns. we learn in his first encounter with maren that he keeps a braid of the hair of all of his victims. he is actually soooo creepy it makes my skin crawl. EW !!!! anyway, after he's dead and lee is on the floor suffering from a stab wound, he picks up the braid that maren took out of sully's bag and sees kayla's hair on it. makes me sob every time tbh. he realises that it was all for nothing. he tried to hard to protect kayla from this, but in the end it destroyed them both. generational trauma can severely impact the relationship between siblings - trying to protect them but in the end you can't. it is so sooo sad.

all in all, it is a beautiful film. this is my own personal favourite interpretation, but i do appreciate some others too. i just love this one and wanted to gush about it online. anyways thanks if anyone reads this and makes it this far !!!

I’m so glad you like them!!! I was really nervous about talking about them but I needed to get it out cuz none of my friends know I’m freak 😔. I absolutely adore them! And yes, mrs Williams having a first husband that Andy reminds her of!! I think he died, I’m not sure how, but I think that they already had kid together at that point and mrs Williams was desperate to get remarried so she married a man who had a good job who could provide for her but she had no real love for him. Then it was all for naught cuz he loses his job and they have to move to a ‘seedier’ neighborhood. I think however, that the time that Andy and her spent together was very beneficial for the both of them, not only just In the obvious way but also bc Andy is, at first, very sleazy, kind of a dirtbag but thru falling for an older more ‘sophisticated’ woman he learns that he wants to change, he wants to be a better man not only for her but also for his brother. He’s still kinda sleazy but he gets better. And on mrs Williams end I think thru having an affair and disobeying her husband, finally doing something for herself she become a lot more whole. After that summer I think she divorces her husband, moves away, and lives out her life a lot happier. It’s still very melancholy for the both of them but I think at the end they’re a lot happier and a lot better off after everything.

Enough rambling about them!!! It’s time for fucked up brother sister dynamics!! I honestly want her to be a lesbian, I think it would be really good for her. I think after the bachelorette party Annalise has a lot to come to terms with, she deludes herself for a while that she wasnt into it bc that’s Wrong, and that it was just a way to get back at her brother. She goes into full comphet mode and gets a sleazy grimy boyfriend who’s like 24 or something. She hates him so much tho and breaks it off after like 2 months. Annalise does eventually move away, goes to college, comes to term with her lesbianism, cuts her hair in a panic over her first girl crush. All that jazz. But I think her brother still haunts her sometimes. She’s mostly come to terms with it by now but after all, he’s still her family, she still has to go home every winter and see him and his wife. WHICH!! Btw let’s talk ab the wife!! I think her names some very basic name like shelia or something. She’s the real tragedy here, cuz while Annalise escapes to the Big City TM shelia can never!! She’s stuck, forever a wife, forever a daughter, forever a mother. And she hates it!!! But there’s nothing she can do! So she jsut has to sit there, picture perfect wife, over thanksgiving staring at the one woman who made her feel something. Staring at her and whatever girlfriend Annalise has brought over,, thinking about that night.

“the giant white unicorn in the room.”

so some stray thoughts on YBC. i will be brief here and SPOILER ALERT- i will not be answering any questions that are not answered by the videos themselves.

one of the few things we agreed on as a band growing up were these stories that united you with others in imagination- films where there is a sense of something beyond- something that forced you to think, to consider that maybe it is something darker or bigger or stranger than you had seen before… we thought of the unicorn in blade runner or the alien in alien (who is possibly more terrifying because of what you dont know rather than what you do (in the first film)). i love the idea of “the force” in star wars- it cant really be explained yet it fully consumed my youth- then when they came out in the prequels and described the midichlorians - it kind of stole the magic for me- it was less than i had imagined, not more.  that is why we decided not to make what was being carried so literal and tangible- it would mean if you  thought of something else we wouldve literally taken that away from you… ‘brad pitt voice’ “whats in the box, whats in the box?!” that being said we also knew that it couldnt be something like “oh they were carrying around "hope” all along or something that had no face or visceral quality"…

we thought of the world that the young blood chronicles had created- there arent true “heroes” in the traditional sense of the word. there are people who are forced to make heroic decisions and the people that make them often make other decisions that are not heroic or are often in fact anti-heroic. there is a gray scale to this story. one mans salvation is, and often creates another mans despair. the idea that the past can trap us- all of us… and the only way to escape that is to break the pattern. at what point are we saved? at what point have we done enough good to erase all the bad from our ledger? can someone who has been terrible their entire life change it with one heroic turn? can a hero make a terrible decision and cast themselves into hell?

the idea that we carry around what we fear most… that we protect that thing we fear… that maybe in order to destroy something terrible we must become something more terrible. and can we love something that is both great and terrible? what is our threshold? at what point do we stop protecting the person or idea we fear the most, cast them aside and step into the light? the answer is different for everyone and so it was different for every character in YBC.

another idea that we focused on was that sometimes in order to fight something so big and dark you need to get your hands dirty- fighting fire with fire (as was explored in films like terminator 2 and dark knight)… the world we chose to create and populate for YBC is not too dissimilar to the one that exists as far as the complexities surrounding morality. when is it ok to accept the lesser of two evils? when do we draw the line? when do we say someone is too broken to be fixed? all of these questions are interesting to explore and i think have analogs in the real world.

all of the images in the YBC were choices, decisions that were made to add depth and texture to the story… I'm not sure that heaven and hell were meant to be real- but they both allowed the viewer to see alternate universes with in the world and allowed or forced characters to undergo drastic transformations… to me it is akin to having humans travel to another planet (as in pandora in avatar or the planetoid in Aliens)… it pressurizes the drama and allowed it to take place in a vacuum.

this was never supposed to be simple. it was never supposed to be easy to swallow. in much of frank darabonts work it is not the terror of the end that is people undoing- it is in fact the human conflict- jealousy/prejudice/anxiety that tears the group a part…. what we decided to focus on was what could bring a group like that back together.

that which tears friends apart can drive them back together.

in the end it all flows pretty easily in my head whether it be different metaphors (biblical, entertainment industry, etc) or just a simple story. but maybe thats cause we wrote it, because i was there. in the end whatever it means to you is the right answer- i have nothing that trumps that.

i think this is all i really have to say about any of this. thanks for coming on this journey with us.

Tsutsumi is amazing though for real, he makes Keisuke seem so much older post-timeskip and it's wonderful to see his old self starting to show again EVEN IF HE IS. BEING A DUMBASS. Huge fan of Tsutsumi playing depressed motherfuckers... I LOVE Takae though... I understand why he was so obsessed with her I get it...

See this is why I can't be too hard on Akira I'm a grown man acting the same way about Tsutsumi😭😭😭I'M GLAD YOU LIKED FIRST EP... THIS IS A RELIEF... Yoshizawa is a nice young man don't worry about him <3

nono maida is SO good considering her age, i was so impressed with her performance throughout the show... AND YEAH TAKAE IS AMAZING she really is an epic woman, no wonder keisuke and mai cant let her go (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ) unfortunately 👁️👁️;;
