Propaganda
James Stewart (It's a Wonderful Life, The Philadelphia Story, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington)—the thing about Jimmy Stewart is that for a weird-enough looking guy, he is yet somehow SO hot and SO believable, ALWAYS. He always plays the same person—he's always, well, Jimmy Stewart—yet that person can be a murderer, a dark cynic, a naive idealist, the boy next door or an old man who knows better, and every one of those is hot. I would jump his bones in a heartbeat
Toshiro Mifune (Rashumon, Seven Samurai, Grand Prix, Stray Dog)—i love and respect my boi tab hunter (rest in peace you beautiful, beautiful man ❤️), but after i watched like 12 of his movies in a row on tcm last year, i ALSO love and respect toshiro mifune, son of a literal actual hatamoto’s (a high-ranking samurai) daughter, also very possibly related to the best judokan EVER, AND, he’s the guy who SHOULD have been obi-wan kenobi. the fact that he’s ALSO hot as hell just adds to his appeal.
This is round 4 of the bracket. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage man.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
James Stewart propaganda:
Tumblr media
"Ough I saw him first in It's A Wonderful Life, where he is very charming as a suicidal family man being absolutely crushed by capitalism. But then. The Philadelphia Story, in my opinion, should get the same kind of press The Mummy does for being a bisexual dream. Now I'm not really bi (not into women) and it's honestly up for debate whether i'm attracted to men or not, but COME ON!! The movie stars James Stewart as well as Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn (and Ruth Hussey). Stewart plays a common working man, a journalist, to contrast with Grant's character, who is mega-rich. He is scrappy and hates rich people. Hot! They have a whole scene together where he's super drunk and being really physical with his acting, which I love because he is kinda wet noodle shaped. Hot! He carries Hepburn in his arms while singing Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Hot! He gets punched in the face by Cary Grant. Hot!!! In The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, we get to see him portray an alternative type of masculinity, opposite John Wayne doing John Wayne. He is even more wet noodle-y, to put emphasis on his incompatibility with the rugged masculinity of the cow-boy, he wears an apron for a lot of the film, again, to blur his masculinity, and he gets shot. Hot! Also he's older here, if that's your thing. Long story short: He's giving librarian chic and The Philadelphia Story made me want to be poly."

Tumblr media
“Here he is next to Grant, in what I believe to be a promotional shot for The Philadelphia Story. Please don’t get distracted by Grant (or do, i’m submitting him next).”
Tumblr media
“He’s a nice guy and a good guy and deserves all the happiness and joy ever! Classic boy next door/class president kid that everyone loves for real. Stand-up for the Little Guy vibes. With a charming fun side!!”

Toshiro Mifune propaganda:

"In addition, he spoke fluent mandarin and every time he was casted in foreign films, he said his lines in the language of the movie (although they ended up dubbing him. He wasn’t happy about it though).”

Submitted: this gifset
Also submitted: this video (yes, that one)
Tumblr media
"Crucial Toshiro Mifune propaganda: THOSE LEGS."
Tumblr media
"That is hella muscle. Go watch The Hidden Fortress, aka Star Wars A New Hope. His thighs deserve an award."

Would it be wrong of me to say that Jimmy was always capable of good, being a better person and improving himself? And that that he intentionally and purposefully chooses not to shows his character far more than what he actually did?
Just like Anya says, that our worst moments don't make us monsters. It's one thing to fuck up, and immediately suffer the consequences and acknowledge your mistakes— But it's another thing entirely to purposefully make it so you never have to deal with the repercussions and then make yourself out to be the victim. Jimmy takes every opportunity to blame everyone around him. All the time.
I do think, like most people are capable of being better, improving and taking the consequences as they come with a responsibility. And Anya believes this so wholeheartedly because thays who she is. Jimmy doesn't even think there is consequence for him, in such denial about it all that he outright refuses to acknowledge it even subconsciously.
Curly genuinely saw the good in Jimmy, in the same way Anya sees the good in others. They both believe that our worst moments don't define us, and Curly had his own interpretation to it all of how we're defined by our past, but not slaves to it. Curly was probably the only and the last person to ever believe that there was good in Jimmy, to look past that dead pixel, his own equivalent of what that means to Curly, and see the bigger picture. Not because he refuses to accept that Jimmy is capable of bad things, but refusing to admit that he is incapable of change.
Thats why he pushes so hard, pushes to constantly remind Jimmy that despite everything, Curly will always have his back. Partly because he genuinely wants to see his best friend thrive and finally get a real chance at life, but also partly because he's absolutely terrified of what Jimmy might or will do if he slips even slightly. Its why he fawns so hard, appeals and pleases.
Curly has always seen the good in Jimmy, always seen the stars, the moon, the sun and the sky in him, even if he knows it's just an illusion. Even if he knows its fake, he has to try. And Jimmy choosing to not be better despite all of this, shows his character as someone who will always be a monster. Always be a slave to his own past, always tied to his own anger and grief because thats also all he's ever known, but because he genuinely doesn't even want to entertain the idea of being better.
To be a better man, you must face the man you once were, and he never ever wants to do that, because it would mean having to face himself for exactly what he is, something he's been avoiding for years.

Something about how Jimmy used mouthwash to try and disinfect Daisuke’s wounds. Absolute stupid fucking move. Yes it has ethanol, but it also has so much sugar that it would just cancel it out, just as Anya pointed this out.
This could be Jimmy being an asshole and ignoring what Anya said (as per usual) thinking he could “fix” Daisuke and be the hero.
Unless… he knew it wouldn’t work.
He knew there was too much sugar, that it wouldn’t disinfect Daisuke’s wounds, that it would more likely cause an even worse infection they couldn’t fix, leaving the kid in an unimaginable amount of pain.
Because he knew, if worse came to worse, Swansea would put Daisuke in the cryopod. If they didn’t have anything to help the kid’s wounds, Swansea would try to save the kid that way.
Jimmy would never give the pod to the kid. And he knew Swansea would kill him if he tried to stop him. So he put Daisuke in unbearable pain so Swansea would have no choice but to it to put him out of his misery.
Leaving the cryopod up for grabs.

Me watching mouthwashing: Geez, one girl trapped alone during a life-threatening situation with four men in an isolated place where there are no locks for the sleeping areas and they are planning to get hammered? That sounds nightmarish and they're pretty rude and come off slightly misogynistic on top of that, but they seem to be leaving her alone and haven't done anything too bad to her yet.
Me finishing mouthwashing: Oh.

i know i said earlier that my interpretation of curly as a victim of jimmy's manipulation as well wasnt necessarily implied in canon but im gonna double down and say it is. ESPECIALLY with the how fish is made dlc.
curly doesn't only enable jimmys behavior towards anya - he enables jimmys behavior tomwards himself. we know jimmy doesn't fulfill his duties to standard, we know curly was putting up with his shit since day one on the tulpar. curly was the only one implied to also be trained as a pilot, meaning that he took on significantly more work rather than confronting jimmy. he let every awful comment jimmy made towards him slide - he let jimmy put him down and villainise his desire to be happier in life. like, its fucking crazy to get mad at your friend for wanting to change his career to be happier? especially on his birthday?
this isnt to say any of that is as bad as literally being raped like anya was, but what little we know of jimmys and curlys dynamic is that jimmy was bitter and spiteful and would take it out on curly, blaming curly for wanting better for himself. curly never pushes back, implying he's accepted this dynamic - he's accepted jimmys tendency to do awful things and then take no blame (no responsibility) as a quirk, as something entirely acceptable.
if you've ever deeply cared for your abuser, chances are you know that desire to view them as innocent. everything harmful they do to you is fine, and thus everything harmful they do to ofhers has to be fine, because you just cannot reconcile these two ideas in your head. they cant be innocent if theyre harming others, and if theyre harming others, what are they doing to you? curly doesn't behave like an enabler, he behaves like a victim. the men who support rapists everybody labels curly as would push back at their friends actions towards themselves. curly never does this.
as curly is effectively unable to communicate after his injury, we dont get his point of view after being directly violated and forced to acknowledge jimmys abuse within the game itself. the game paints very clear parallels between anya and curly - both pregnancy (especially as a result of rape) and disability (especially as a result of violence) result in a loss of autonomy, unwanted and uncontrollable changes to ones body and in this case- the perpetrator getting away with it. like, the way jimmy twists the tale to make curly out as the bad guy is purposefully reminiscent of men who blame women for "asking for it" when accused of rape. curly caused the accident - jimmy is just an innocent victim of his.
in the last one and then another, curly regrets ever joining the pony express. his thought process sounds a lot like that of an abuse victim (because he and everybody working under pony express is a victim of their abuse, of course): "We're defined by our past, but not slaves to it. We said tomorrow will be different. Today would be the last day. The last one. The last one and then another. And another, and another, and another... " its the cycle of forgiving your abuser because you believe they can change, because you believe you can change and break the pattern, and pushing through day by day, never giving up on them. even if curly wasnt abused by jimmy and jimmy was "just" toxic towards him, its clear he has this pattern of thought deeply engraved in him. we don't know everything jimmy did to him, we barely know of what he did aboard the tulpar, but at the VERY LEAST he exploited curlys trauma for his own benefit. it could be argued curly shouldnt have passed the psych eval, but neither should have jimmy.
lastly, anya and curly clearly serve as parallels in the game. anya is an incredibly capable doctor, she wasnt unable to give him medicine because of disgust - she bandaged him herself, thats far more dirty work. she related to him too much. she saw herself in him - somebody who lost their body and their voice. even without knowing the same man did this to both of them. theyre both victims of abuse, of violation, of a man who could never take responsibility, of a sistem that allowed all of this in the first place. curly shouldnt have enabled jimmy, but curly shouldnt have had anything to enable in the first place. jimmy shouldn't have raped anya, he shouldnt have crashed the ship. pony express shouldnt have abused its workers. whichever regime holds power over it shouldnt have allowed it to happen in the first place. you can acknowledge somebody made a mistake, and yet understand they were abused too. jimmy was exploited by the capitalist society he lived in. if he had access to mental health services, he couldve gotten better. everybody in this game is a victim of circumstance, but jimmy hurt people nonetheless. curly hurt anya nonetheless.
anyways im going to set everybody who says curly "deserved it" on fire to prove their point.

can't remember if I ever posted this to tumblr so have a silly little snippet from an au me and stiff came up with!
the premise is that every hermit is some kind of hybrid, but is worried about sharing this fact because they all think they're the only hybrid on hermitcraft. empires on the other hand immediately clocks them all as hybrids and assumes the fact they’re hiding it is some kind of lore
jimmy can’t help grinning as scar tries to get him to ‘accept himself’ for the fifth time this afternoon. man, these hermitcraft people are fantastic at sticking to the bit—jimmy knows he would have cracked up way before now if it was him.
“you gotta accept it as part of you!” scar is practically begging him as jimmy leads him to the tavern. “you’ll never get anywhere if you’re left hating something like that about you, tim!”
jimmy turns to look at him. he keeps throwing his hat in the air and catching it again—that’s allay behaviour if he’s ever seen it.
“scar,” jimmy says, dropping the ‘oh no i’m so tormented’ act for a moment. “you do know i’m not actually a toy, don’t you?”
scar blinks at him. “you- no, you are. aren’t you?”
“no!” jimmy laughs at the look on scar’s face. “i’m a cow, scar, have you seen me?”
“wait- but what’s all that about then!” scar exclaims, gesturing in the direction of stratos. “with the ‘little toy man’ and- and the revealing potion!”
“oh that’s just for fun!” jimmy grins. “none of it’s true: the ‘revealing potion’ just makes you short, and joel knows i’m not a toy.”
“gosh, you empires people are odd.” scar says. “why do something that’s not true?”
“well, first of all, it’s funny.” jimmy says. “and second of all, it makes for a cool story! you being human isn’t real, but it-“
“not human?” scar interrupts, looking nervous all of a sudden. “i don’t- I have no clue what you mean! ‘not human’,” scar laughs to himself, unconvincingly offhand. “ah, you never fail to amuse me, jimmy.”
jimmy blinks at him. “is that- do you guys-“
and something clicks. the shiftiness of tango, the wide-eyed gazes at their hybrid features that all the hermitcraftians had enacted, almost like-
almost like they didn’t know they were all hybrids.
jimmy suppresses a laugh. wow, okay. now that’s a story.
“scar, I know you’re an allay.” jimmy says. “or a vex? somewhere in between?”
“somewhere in between.” scar clarifies. “how- how did you know?”
“I hate to tell you, but you’re not very subtle about it.” jimmy grins. oh gosh, he’s going to have to tell everyone when he has the time. no wonder all the hermits looked so surprised to see them.
“not subt- how am I not subtle?” scar asks. “I do everything humans do!”
“you’re counting your fellow hermits as humans?” jimmy asks.
“well of course.” scar says. ah, that’s where he’s gone wrong, jimmy thinks. “sure, we’re all a little weird over there, but i’m the only hybrid. and no one has noticed yet, so i think i’m doing quite well actually.”
“must be ‘cause i’m used to hybrids then.” jimmy settles on, because whilst he doesn’t want to reveal the secrets of.. pretty much everyone except the guy in the doom outfit, he also really wants to see how this plays out.
“oh yes.” scar agrees quickly. “must be that.”
“now, I do believe I was showing you the saloon!” jimmy says, putting on his silly accent for the last word, and scar seems to register that he’s back in character.
“yeah, the saloon!” scar exclaims, ever the enthusiast.
as scar starts to ramble about how he doesn’t think you can be classified as a cowboy unless you have your own saloon (which jimmy agrees with wholeheartedly), jimmy smiles to himself as he anticipates the reactions of his server-mates when he breaks the news.
.. and also he might be smiling at the way scar’s face lights up as he speaks. but that’s a matter for another time.

I need Jimmy to stay alive for a while on red for at least a little longer because the absolute feral honeybadger energy he brings to the table is my fave thing ever. He murdered Grian (and Mumbo) with his own trap right under Skizz's nose and gloated. He killed Joel using the man's own wife as a distraction and taunted him about it. And this isn't even a Wild Life thing either. He was an absolute menace in Secret Life when he was helping Joel try and kill Scott. And in 3rd Life too, remember when he basically started a war with the Dogwarts crew by setting their banner on fire in front of them and constantly acting standoffish even as Scott tried to de-escalate the situation?
Like the Canary Curse ensured he never really got to menace too close to the sun but I have high hopes for my boy now.

god thinking abt jimmy mouthwashing is driving me NUTS just a guy so completely swallowed up by his own insecurities and inadequacy. he spends so much time violently jealous of curly and everything he has, he assaults and bullies anya in some dim assertion of authority, he dreams of being this guy whos in charge and adored but when it comes down to it he cant even begin to measure up against curly. hes too fucking cowardly to even try to save his own crew, sending an inexperienced kid instead of taking responsibility for his own actions that got them there in the first place. he was right - the gap is so unimaginably wide between him and a leader like curly, but hes almost completely blinded to the fact that the reason for that distance falls entirely on his utter selfishness and cowardice.
