If I had a nickel every time an angelic being and a demonic being kissed desperately in a bookshop only for the angelic being to say very hurtful things to the demonic being after which one of them leaves the bookshop and they are both left heartbroken, I would have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.

So, I'm going to be the one that makes the post on Payneland and parallels to other couples/relationships, aren't I?
Sigh...I guess here we go. Spoilers, obviously. So if you haven't watched Dead Boy Detectives, go watch it and return to this post!
Believe it or not, there is more than one relationship to which I can compare the Edwin/Charles dynamic.
These couples include Destiel (Supernatural), Malec (Shadowhunters), and Solangelo (PJO).
So let's start with the Charles parallels.
We are introduced in Episodes 3 & 4 to the fact that Charles went through some serious physical abuse. His father had high expectations for him, and when he didn't match those expectations, he took his anger out on Charles. This gives reason as to why Charles's anger comes out in the form of protection because he was never protected from that abuse, and he doesn't want anyone else to experience the same type of hurt he did.
Not only does this remind me of Dean Winchester, but of Magnus Bane. Both were raised by men who were quite angry and abusive in their own ways. Yet these characters are known for their care and love of other people. Dean's entire job is saving people, Magnus' job is helping people with his magic abilities, and we already know Charles's job of helping ghosts solve their mysteries to cross over. All these characters wish to be better (while holding themselves to very high standards) and care more for everyone else than themselves.
So where do the Edwin parallels come into these pairings?
When Edwin was alive, we see that he was a loner, often ridiculed and ostracized by his peers for being a 'Mary Anne'. This puts us into the discussion of how and why it takes a cat king and a crow to help him figure out his sexuality; he merely doesn't realize his feelings because they were never needed during both his time alive and in hell. I'm going to assume that he didn't keep up with politics and popular culture once he got out, so he really was just unaware of what society became, and that's why Niko had to tell him.
This very much fits my comparison to Castiel, his brethren looking down on him because he had 'too much heart'; he began to care more heavily once he was introduced to Dean, but everyone believed he 'came off the line with a crack in his chassis'. I've always thought this was heavily queer-coded. Edwin and Castiel have the similarities of being adorably clueless when it comes to human modern-day communication and needing help in navigating relationships. The comparison I'll make to Alec is that he was also raised in quite a hostile environment. He was forgotten, and looked at as a second choice to his brother Jace before Magnus took notice of him. Alec is another character who goes through a self-discovery journey in which he's adamant that he doesn't need a relationship or feelings to do what needs to be done; he rather be all work.
Now let's get to Solangelo parallels.
Edwin and Nico are both placed out of time, stuck in places for decades until the world has changed around them so drastically they don't recognize it anymore. They both go to Hell/Tartarus and have to find their own ways out. They are both ultimately kind even though they have been hurt by the world, again ostracized and seen as outsiders. They do what must be done to save that which they care about most and, ultimately, torture themselves over their feelings.
Charles and Will are the blinding light that leads their respective partner out of the darkness in more ways than one. They make the choice to stick around their person even though Edwin/Nico thinks they are better off on their own, but Charles/Will pushes to stay with them, not out of duty but because they want to. They try to get their partners out of their comfort zone and remind them to not take everything so seriously all the time.
Now the Hell parallels. One partner always goes to Hell, and the other follows; it does not always perfectly align but stay with me.
Dean goes to Hell, and Castiel fetches him and brings him back to Earth, but Castiel is the one who is more changed by the experience. "When Castiel first laid a hand on you in Hell, he was lost." This could also parallel Edwin and Charles meeting for the first time. Castiel and Charles both choose to stay with the person who changed/was kind to them.
Again, the parallels don't perfectly align with Malec but Edwin goes to hell, as Magnus goes to Edom, albeit Magnus goes willingly, he can’t escape. Charles follows, as does Alec. And neither leave without their other half.
Same with Solangelo, Nico goes into Tartarus, and Will follows because he isn't going to let Nico experience it by himself for a second time.
My point to this post is that these are common tropes that go along the lines of 'Do not go where I can not follow'. Both people in the relationship are so devoted to each other that they are broken when they are apart and are willing to go to the ends of the earth to get them back.
If there are any other parallels/things I missed, please add to this post!

More 'A Fire in the Flesh' thoughts
Now that I've gotten a little bit of sleep, I have more thoughts.
JLA making such a big deal about the relationship between Attes and Kyn throughout the entirety of A Fire in the Flesh and at the very end of the book having Nyktos point out that Kyn lost his memories after Ascending (thus most likely being one of the catalysts to him being the "evil twin") makes me so scared for Malec. We still don't know what happened to make him leave Iliseeum. Between Attes and Kyn's issues and Eythos and Kolis' story, the track record for male twins in this series isn't very good.
I'm also so curious about how and why he ends up in Atlantia and how Atlantia was created in the supposedly sacred Bonelands.

A Prince Restored please! :)
I got four tropes/prompts from a meme generator on Twitter and they immediately made me think of some what if’s with the Magnus/Valentine body swap storyline.
What if Alec didn’t save Magnus in time? What if Alec had to kill Valentine wearing Magnus’ face?? What if Alec never stopped grieving? What if Asmodeus was furious after learning his favorite son was executed because of Azazel’s games????
There was too much potential angst to ignore and not try to write it 😆
(this draft is very rough rn 😅)

“I’ll come back to you,” Magnus had whispered, even as the portal began to close around him. “I promise.” But that promise had been broken. The portal had closed, and with it, Magnus had vanished. Alec had waited, heart in his throat, for days, for weeks… until reality had crashed over him, a wave of grief so overwhelming he had nearly drowned in it.

Hurts So Good (+ Some Spoilers)
Let's talk about pain for a moment. Not the everyday kind that's endured due to unfortunate circumstances or the violent type inflicted by predatory people, but the sort that's carefully measured and consensually shared by adults for mutual enjoyment.
It's fairly common for folks to be uncomfortable with sadomasochism. Such practices aren't usually performed in public, after all, and when pain-giving comes up in the news, it's usually the criminal kind. Along with the way it's portrayed in fictional media, there's little wonder why people hesitate to believe it can ever be a good thing.
Sadomasochism comes up in all kinds of stories across many mediums, but anything beyond some light spanking is rarely shown in a good light. Even if the presentation starts off with signs of respect and understanding, from what I've seen, it may not take long before consent is ignored, caution is thrown to the wind, and someone is truly harmed. Villains tend to be the ones portrayed with sexual sadism disorder, while protagonists become their victims. Otherwise, it's shown for the lulz.
So it did my heart good to see sadomasochism handled differently in Sigh of the Abyss.
Malec isn't a cruel or manipulative man and the main character isn't a victim. He doesn't bring it up right away or impose anything on the main character. You can shut the topic down, as far as I could tell; I didn't for many reasons, but mostly because wanted to see how it would play out. If you allow it, it seems from the dialogue options that you can determine whether he enjoys giving or receiving pain, but I haven't tested this theory yet.
While it may seem extreme that Malec enjoys using a knife to trace designs in skin, he's shown in a careful, considerate, practiced light and nothing is described in graphic terms. I would have been happy with even more. Either way, when sadomasochism is shown in this visual novel, it's about consensual mutual pleasure and a special kind of intimacy, not fear or control - the way it should be.

Same fam. It’s definitely much worse when it comes to slash shippers, but for the big het ships it gets insane too. It also bugs me because media can have SO much going on, so many themes, so many relationships. But you go look for content and it’s “these two white guys existed near each other they wanna smaaaaaash.” As far as the eye can see.
(Conveniently this doesn’t happen if one or both parties aren’t conventionally attractive, or one are both parties AREN’T white. Which is… interesting.)
I’m gonna try to censor this cause I’m about to be rude.
S!dL!nk shippers are perfect examples of why shipping has become so annoying to my aroace ass in fandom as a whole. People see these INCREDIBLY minor things and insist it’s a sign of a deep profound love, and CANNOT let it go if canon doesn’t bend over backwards to validate them. They attack other characters (very often using sexist logic cause the “threat” is almost always a woman), they try to do everything they can to deny the canon/semi canon ships (the debate about how L!nk CANNOT be living in his house, as if Zelda just kicked him out lol?) and it’s so annoying to deal with because of how they act.
It’s not canon. It was never canon. It was never going to be canon. Not every interaction is about romance and sex. S!don is friendly, that’s how he is, he’s sweet and friendly to L!nk because that’s his personality!! His DEAD SISTER was in love with L!nk, she was going to give him engagement armor! S!don wasn’t going to jump on his dick five seconds after meeting him! (I don’t think the ship is “amoral” or whatever. I’m just saying since we’re so hung up on canon, canonically it’d be weird for that to happen like that or quickly. But I’ve noticed shippers also try to undermine M!pha’s feelings, as if their ship only works if Link has never felt anything romantic or had anyone feel anything romantic for him.)
Stop going on other peoples ship posts and making it about S!don! Stop complaining about his fiancé! Stop trying to deny canon evidence and push on happy Z3link shippers that it’s not what it clearly is! I’m sorry you’re not happy but your ship is just as valid! Your fics are still good! Why has fandom become so obsessive about canon backing y’all up? I was here for early day slash shipping and none of it was explicitly canon and we had a great time!
Fucking hell let people enjoy things and enjoy things without getting so pressed a ship you made up in your head didn’t happen! You will be so much happier!
(Also consider that bi people exist. Sidon can be MLM whether Yona exists or not. Fandom is constantly chomping at the bit to exclude and deny bi people so I’m not surprised. But still.)

Shadowhunters question. Does Alec, Izzy and Jace’s mother get any better or dies she stay like ThatTM? Because I just watched the malec episode and I kinda want to throw her out of an airlock. Sorry if you like her. You just seem to be an expert on this.
Oh no darling, I didn't like her until season 3, when she finally became a better person.
Not to give spoilers but she has a lot on her mind so that's why she's a bitch at the beginning of the series.

A way too long post about the differences in Shadowhunters show and The Mortal Instruments books.
⚠️Shadowhunters universe spoiler warning⚠️
I'm rereading The Mortal Instruments and I'm just cringing and how much the Shadowhunters show mixed up the whole storyline, LIKE IS THERE ANYTHING FROM THE BOOKS YOU LEFT IN THE SHOW.
But also, I love the show so much because it's absolutely iconic and the scenes and the characters and it's really just so iconic (I'm actually just down bad for Malec scenes and also just Katherine McNamara and Emeraude Toubia and Matthew Daddario ARE SO HOT AAA, DYING. And also the bloopers on the YouTube channel. And every time Alberto Rosende sings. And also who doesn't love Harry Shum Jr. And I love Isaiah Mustafa as Luke AND MY GOD, there are so many more hot characters, basically everyone is so aaaaaa in the cast.)
I JUST WISH YOU KEPT THE STORYLINE BECAUSE SOME THINGS ARE JUST SO WTF.
LIKE WHO DECIDED TO DELETE SIMON'S WHOLE BAND, CHANGE MADAME DOROTHEA LIKE THAT, MAKE THE INSTITUTE A PLACE WITH A SHIT TON OF PEOPLE IN IT, WHO THE FUCK IS HEIDI.
OR WHO DECIDED TO COMPLETELY CHANGE THE CAMILLE STORYLINE.
OR WHO DECIDED THAT JOCELYN SHOULD DIE.
OR WHO MADE AMATIS AN IRON SISTER (actually, 10 out of 10 decision, I love you)
OR WHO DECIDED TO LINK CLARY TO JONATHAN WHEN IT WAS JACE IN THE BOOKS. LIKE THEY WERE LITERALLY LINKED BC IF A PERSON FROM THE LIGHT COMES BACK TO LIFE THEN A PERSON FROM THE DARK ALSO HAS TO BECAUSE BALANCE AND THEY WERE LINKED TOGETHER BY THE CEREMONY AND ALL THAT SHIT LIKE ARGH.
OR THE BIGGEST "WHO DECIDED THAT" IS MAKING CLARY FORGET EVERYTHING, WHEN IT WAS ACTUALLY SIMON WHO FORGOT EVERYTHING AND HE WAS UNVAMPIRED AND HE WAS TRAINING TO BE A SHADOWHUNTER AND HE BECAME CLARY'S PARABATAI.
And the whole Jonathan line was kinda meh.
I love everything about the show tho, except for the storyline.
