Who Disappears in TLKOF?

So the summary of The Last King of Faerie on Cassie's website indicates that Ty and Kit set off at the start of TLKOF to find someone who has mysteriously disappeared. At the moment I have four guesses for who it could be, but I'm not completely sold on any of them.

Dru - I know it's unlikely that Dru will go missing again in TLKOF, but I feel like she will very much be in Faerie for the majority of the book and I don't think she'll be able to tell many people about it. What if she is unable to tell Kit and Ty which leads them to look for her? I've said this in the past, the only reason I can see Kit and Ty coming back together for anything is because someone very important to both of them would be in danger. Dru definitely fits that description.

Clary - The reason I feel like it could be Clary is because Janus wants her by his side. I very much think that he could kidnap her early on which throws everyone into disarray. The only thing about Clary is that I don't feel like Ty and Kit have enough connection to her to bring them together to actively solve her disappearance, not with how they left things in TDA and SOBH. I know Kit is connected to her because of Jace, but it still doesn't feel like enough. However, if her disappearance could be somehow related to Kit being the First Heir or Livvy being resurrected, I definitely think it could bring them together. A slight variation of this is that Ty might be dispatched to help find her/solve the investigation of her disappearance since he's a Centurion. Then it somehow gets connected to Kit being the First Heir or Livvy which then pulls Kit in. Kit knows the only way he can solve it is with Ty's help so he begrudgingly accepts that he has to work with him.

Jaime - I truly don't see them going to look for Jaime unless Dru specifically asked them to, but I think that could be a possibility. Maybe Dru looks in Faerie for Ash while the boys look for him the mundane world on their roadtrip. What really gives weight to this for me is that we already see in SOBH that he's gone missing.

Livvy - Going along with the idea that the only reason Kit and Ty would pair up again if something very dire happedned, I believe that Livvy could go missing one day. Maybe she became unstable and is now wreaking havoc somewhere. This would really weaken Ty which I believe could make Kit agree to help him (because deep down we know he would do anything to help Ty if he was truly in need). There's also the fact that they would feel responsibility for the harm that Livvy could be causing since they resurrected her.

I know most of these probably seem very unlikely, but they are my guesses. I would love to hear all of your thoughts!

As per usual, you're correct.The sobh's installments were usually more impactful, wheter their theme was the impending conflict in twp, kitty's angsty or tlh.They made me concerned about what had happened in chot, and that energy of loss and regret we get from Jessa didn't match the actual book.Just the way Tessa was so horrified over the gun is overplayed to me.Neither she, nor Jem have actually seen James use it, like ever.I wouldn't be surprised if she even hadn't even known that the gun had been his, since when Kit gave it to him James was already living with Cordelia, and it was buried by the end of chot.As far as I remember, they never discussed the paladin business and how that gun could harm lilith with Wessa, so its not like she knows what it can do.Also round Tom said there was some powerful magic around the casket thst disguised it, but...how? Both gun and scabbard were lowkey special, but not enough for that, and they didn't do any spell.Matt saying he had lost the flask along the way, when it turned up to be hidden at the devil was odd.Dont know if she plans to get back to that in the future or if its just a plot whole.If they had decided to close up their quarters and end the devil tavern era for good when kit died, and there had been a scene of matt leaving the flask behind in a symbolic gesture, there would be tears, at least for me lol.But yeah, it was generally underwhelming, and I say this as someone who balls her eyes out crying at the cp2 epilogue every damn time I've read this series 3 times over the years and it ALWAYS gets to me

Alec Lightwood Not Giving a Single Fuck About the Law

(Spoilers! So many spoilers! For everything except Secrets of Blackthorn Hall, because I haven't read it yet)

I'm not too clear on what the Accords say about Shadowhunters policing Downworlders/what Downworlders are not allowed to do. But I'm pretty sure all of these must be illegal (or at least frowned upon):

Not reporting that Magnus started a joke cult that turned in a real cult that was killing people and worshiping a Greater Demon

Letting the person actually running said evil cult go free after they had captured her because he knew the Clave would execute her and even though Shinyun was literally responsible for several murders, he thought she deserved a second chance (and Magnus related to her, and Alec wanted to spare Magnus pain)

Never reporting Elliott of the New York Vampire Clan for literally everything he has done, including biting several Downworlders at a party, having multiple incidents with faerie fruit, "accidentally" biting 17 mundanes while under the influence (including at least one time where Lily had to stop him from killing the mundane in question), and cheating on two Selkies who then caused property damage in a fight with each other

relatedly, not reporting Mordecai, the faerie fruit dealer

(I just love this entire exchange: "As the current head of the New York Institute," Maryse said, with an attempt at firmness, "if there is illegal Downworlder activity happening, it should be reported to me." "I do not talk to Nephilim about Downworlder business," Lily said severely. The Lightwood parents stared at her, and then swung their heads in sync to stare at their son. Lily waved a dismissed hand in their direction. "Except for Alec, he's a special case.")

Watching Juliette, Werewolf Queen of the Buenos Aires Shadow Market, kill a Shadowhunter and just lightly suggest she try to take the Shadowhunters alive (and then not punish her in any way for killing that one guy)

Not reporting that Ragnor Fell had found a realm for the Greater Demon Sammael and also worked for him for a period of time (I don't think the Clave would care that Ragnor didn't had a choice because of the sventhorn)

Suggested in the final battle in Queen of Air and Darkness that an effective way to render opposing Shadowhunters unconscious would be to have vampires bite them and drink enough of their blood that they passed out

Protecting Marcy, the werewolf who transformed at a club during a full moon, and never reporting her for almost revealing the shadow world to Mundanes and injuring several of them

Breaking the Cold Peace several times by visiting several Shadow Markets, interacting with faeries, and pretending not to know about multiple illegal Shadowhunter-faerie relationships (Tian/Jinfeng and Mark/Kieran/Cristina)

Not illegal but probably seen as outrageous by other Shadowhunters:

marrying Magnus in Shadowhunter gold

traipsing into a hell dimension to save Downworlders

letting a vampire (Simon) drink his blood

offering his blood to a different vampire (Lily)

raising a Downworlder child as his own (and also training that child like a Shadowhunter)

raising a Shadowhunter child that has a Downworlder parent

Basically, Alec Lightwood is a badass and the fact that he went from the type of guy who said "sed lex, dura lex" to the man who did all of this is the reason he is one of my favorite characters ever

(Also maybe a spoiler warning? In case this is in every package and some don’t want to see what’s in it until theirs are delivered)

These silhouettes! I KNOW that has to be Ty and Livvy in the bottom right, but does that mean the third is Kit ?? Is he going to learn to play the violin??? Is that Dru and Ash in the top left??? And is that Jaime beneath them???

I have so many questions!! If anyone else has better observations than I, or has more information, please share, I’m so curious!

@pamaramburu welcome to the shadowhunter chronicles!! sorry about replying in a new post, there's just a lot to cover 😅

City of Bones is a great place to start! sometimes people will recommend starting elsewhere, because it's not the best book but imo since it's the first book to be published its the easiest introduction. the world building is introduced gradually throughout the book, it's fun to read, not too long etc. so I would start there!

as for the reading order I would recommend a modified publication order. you could definitely do the publication order as is (just follow the publication dates and be mindful that some books came out the same year) but I personally would make some small tweaks to make it more straightforward :)

start with the first three books of The Mortal Instruments; City of Bones (2007), City of Ashes (2008), and City of Glass (2009)

then, read The Infernal Devices trilogy; Clockwork Angel (2010), Clockwork Prince (2011) and Clockwork Princess (2013)

finish the rest of The Mortal Instruments; City of Fallen Angels (2011), City of Lost Souls (2012) (optional: The Bane Chronicles (2013/14), a short story collection about Magnus Bane. it's not important for plot or anything but it does have spoilers for Clockwork Princess & City of Lost Souls so you can read at any point after them) and City of Heavenly Fire (2014)

then it's Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy (2015/16) this is also a short story collection and it's technically optional but I definitely recommend reading it now, as it follows an unresolved storyline from City of Heavenly Fire

next is The Dark Artifices, which is Lady Midnight (2016), Lord of Shadows (2017) and Queen of Air and Darkness (2018) (aka the longest tsc book, good luck!)

then there's the third and final (for now) short story collection Ghosts of the Shadow Market (2018/19)

the Eldest Curses trilogy is kinda hard to place since the books take place years apart & are more of a standalone so you can kinda just read them whenever. The Red Scrolls of Magic (2019) takes place in 2007 at the same time as City of Fallen Angels & The Lost Book of the White (2020) takes place in 2010 after Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy and before Lady Midnight (the third book is not yet released)

which brings us to the most recent series, The Last Hours; Chain of Gold (2020), Chain of Iron (2021) and Chain of Thorns (2023)

the last thing is Secrets of Blackthorn Hall (2022) which is a multimedia epistolary novel that was published here on tumblr (@secretsofblackthornhall) and is currently in the works to become a physically published book at some point soon. it came out before Chain of Thorns and there's a few references to it in the book, but they're pretty minor. you can read it before or after it's really up to you.

and that's pretty much everything! tsc is one of my favourite series ever and I hope you enjoy just as much! have fun <3

LYKY: when Joe Solomon walks through the doors of the Grand Hall and sits down and says “sorry I’m late, Rachel.” When Joe Solomon is late to the first CoveOps class and tells the girls that he is preparing them for life outside in the field. “Get good, ladies. Or get dead.” Meeting Macey McHenry for the first time. “Tell Suzy she’s a lucky cat.” “For the first time in a long time, when thinking about my father, I felt like smiling, too.” Macey and the girls finally being friends. And anytime Joe Solomon talks about his bestie Matthew Morgan.

CMH: (this is gonna be long because this is my fave book) the girls trying to break into Rachel’s office. Finding out that Joe went to Blackthorne. The trip to DC. Flirting. Zach. Guggenheim Academy. “They say you’re a real pavement artist.” The ball scene. “Zach knew me.” The CoveOps final. “I always finish what I start.” Zach dipping Cammie in the middle of the foyer. The kiss. Just all things Zach!

DJGC: Macey’s cover! Cam seeing Zach everywhere. Meeting Aunt Abby for the first time. Preston.
