Chapter 5: A Fresh New Start
Previous
Before we I just want to point out that this is how I intend Jaune to look like in this story, at least for now.

A male version of the character Future Knight from Guardian Tales. Beautiful art by Katzuri over on Pixiv. Go show them some love!
/ / /
Years have passed, the three had made incredible memories. Each birthday felt like an actual party compared to what Jaune celebrated with his family. Arthur Watts was smart, and was able to make Jaune a weapon he could call his own. Tyrian was... unique to say the least. And thanks to Salem he would finally be able to achieve his dream.
Salem wiped away a tear and sniffled.
Salem: I can't believe my little boy is all grown up now! Oh, I'm so proud of you!
Jaune: H-Hey, there's no need to cry. It's not like I'm being sent off to war. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous though.
Jaune scratched the back of his neck.
Salem: Oh, then maybe just one more year here then wouldn't-
Jaune: Mom- er, Salem it's fine. It's time I got out there, you know? Besides, I won't be alone, Cinder is coming with too.
Jaune flashed a bright smile. Salem couldn't help but hug the boy.
Salem: Oh, did you hear that! My boy just called me mom! The castle is going to be so lonely without you here!
Jaune: Mom! This is embarrassing...
Jaune's voice trailed on. Even though he wanted to complain he didn't mind holding the woman who raised him one last time. Emerald looked at Mercury with a puzzled expression.
Emerald: She does know we're staying behind for a bit, right?
Mercury: Let her have this. One can never understand a mother's love.
Mercury sighed as she crossed her arms.
Salem eventually let go of Jaune.
Salem: Are you sure you'll be fine riding a Nevermore though? What if you get airsick?
Jaune: Haha, it's fine. For some reason I don't get air sick when riding Grimm.
Salem: Well... I suppose you should get going then. Be safe though, okay?
Jaune waved as he and Cinder walked out of the throne room.
Jaune: Will do, mom!
Salem wiped away another tear as she watches Jaune and Cinder get on a Nevermore and fly off.
/ / /
Jaune looks down at the beauty of Remnant below them as they fly to Vale.
Jaune: Woah! I've been all over Remnant but even then from up here it's even more beautiful!
Cinder blushed as she felt Jaune's body press up against her as he held on.
Jaune: So… this is it, huh? We’re finally leaving the Grimm Lands and headed towards Vale.
Cinder: Are you nervous?
Cinder tried to calm herself down.
Jaune, nodding: A little… what if I run into one of my sisters? What should I do… what should I say?
Cinder: You’ll do fine… but maybe we should think of a different name that you can go by if you’re that worried-
Before Cinder could finish speaking Jaune cut her off.
Jaune: ... No.
Cinder: Huh? What did you say?
Jaune: No… my family… my old family gave me my name. I'm not giving that up.
Cinder sighed as she rolled her eyes.
Cinder: Guess you want to keep some part of your heritage alive, huh?
Jaune: Of course… I consider you and the others my family now, but they still raised me for twelve years… this is the least I could do to honor them.
Cinder: You really liked your old family, huh?
Jaune nodded as he took in his surroundings. The two flew through the skies on the Nevermore for what seemed like hours before Vale came into view. Jaune's eyes beamed with excitement.
Jaune: We're finally here! The city of Vale!
Cinder blushed as the excited boy held her close as he gushed over the city.
Cinder: Yes well... we'll have to speak with Roman once we land.
Jaune nodded excitedly, all he cared about at this point was that he was finally in Vale.
/ / /
Roman had been standing at the docks, seemingly waiting for hours. At this point he was just about to leave when he saw a woman dressed in red falling from the sky while carrying a blonde boy.
Jaune: That was amazing! Oh my gods, feeling the wind blowing through my hair! Can we do that again!? Can we can we?!
The boy seemed to nag the girl before he composed himself as he noticed Roman. The woman looked over at Roman.
Cinder: Hello, you must be Roman. You may not know us, but we'd like to... work with you. Cut a deal if you will.
Roman looked at the two, skeptical, but he was a business man at heart.
Roman: Very well, I'll hear you out.
Cinder: Get the boy into Beacon by any means necessary, and you will gain my... cooperation.
Roman blinked as he looked over at the boy.
Roman: You sure? Don't get me wrong I just... don't think he's Beacon material. Fine I'll figure something out.
Roman took out his scroll at went through his contacts before calling someone.
Roman: Neo, head over to Junior's and get a forged transcript for a... hey kid what's your name?
Jaune's eyes beamed as he spoke.
Jaune: Jaune! Jaune Arc."
Roman: Right... for a Jaune Arc. I'll go ahead and send you a photo in a bit.
As Roman hung up the call he quickly took a photo of the smiling boy before sending it to Neo.
Cinder: So, we have deal. I hate to ask but... I don't suppose you have a place for us to stay, do you.
Cinder crossed her arms. Roman sighed as he turned around.
Roman: Fine... follow me. At least this way I won't have to look for you once Neo gets the transcripts.
Cinder followed quietly as Jaune bounced along, barely able to contain his excitement.
/ / /
The three soon arrived at a fairly well lit hideout. It wasn't as dirty as they thought it would be, still it could use some cleaning.
Roman, walking away: Sleep wherever, just don't go into Neo's room.
Cinder: Hm... not a bad place, what do you think Jaune? Jaune?
Jaune took in the scenery with gleaming eyes.
Jaune: Amazing! I just can't wait to see the dorms at Beacon!
Cinder face palmed before she felt a tap on her shoulder. As she turned around she didn't see anyone until she looked down and saw what seemed like a small girl with pink and brown hair.
Cinder: Can I... help you?
The girl didn't speak but instead signed at Cinder.
Neo: 'Where is Jaune?'
Cinder was confused for a bit.
Cinder: O-Oh sorry, I uh... don't know sign language.
Jaune looked over at Cinder before coming up to her and looking over at the small girl before looking back at Cinder.
Jaune: You don't know sign language, Cinder?
Cinder: Do you even know sign language?
Jaune: Of course I do, one of my sisters was deaf after all.
The small girl did the same hand gestures as before and Jaune noticed what she was asking.
Jaune: Oh, that would be me. I'm Jaune... did you need me for something.
The small girl blushed a bit as she took in Jaune's appearance before holding out the transcripts and... a note. Jaune took the transcripts and opened the note finding... the girl's number. He blushed as he realized what had just happened.
Jaune: Th-Thanks...
The girl skipped away before signing one last thing at Jaune which made his face turn red.
Cinder looked confused and turned to face Jaune.
Cinder: What did she say?
Jaune: Uh... th-that's a guy. I'm gonna go contemplate this.
Cinder was just stunned at the revelation more importantly, how in the world was a guy more attractive than her, and more importantly how could such a cute guy make Jaune blush more than she could ever.
/ / /
Jaune found a nice, quiet, and seemingly empty room to shut his eyes. It had been a long day and all his excitement had tired him out. More importantly he had to contemplate this sudden... gay awakening if you would. How could such a guy look so cute... so feminine. Jaune was still a teenager, it was inevitable that he would begin to think of... less than respectful thoughts of this Neo person. This wasn't a new feeling, but to think of someone he just met like this was definitely new.
Before he could do anything though Cinder knocked on the door and entered the roo.
Jaune: Ah! C-Cinder, knock next time.
Cinder: S-Sorry, I just... wanted to ask you something.
Jaune sat up from the bed and looked at Cinder.
Jaune: Um... a-alright.
This was new, Jaune had never seen this side of Cinder... a side more jealous.
Cinder: What uh... what do you think of that Neo girl- guy... that Neo guy?
Cinder rubbed her arm, nervous of Jaune's response.
Jaune: Well... they Um... they seem nice-
Cinder: That's not what I mean.
Jaune: ... I wouldn't mind spending more time with them... romantically even.
Cinder's heart broke, but she tried to keep her composure. Jaune noticed this however.
Jaune: I-I'm just... not sure why. This is... entirely new to me. I don't... think I'll pursue these feelings though. It could just... go away.
Jaune's words seemed to soothe Cinder, just as they always have. She knew though... her chance was over. Jaune's feelings would not simply go awa.
Cinder: ... Goodnight Jaune. I'll leave alone for now.
She couldn't let him know she didn't feel comfortable sleeping alone so far away from home.
Jaune could only quietly agree as Cinder left the room, leaving him alone with his thoughts. His not so innocent thoughts. However as he looked up at the dark and dingy ceiling he could only think of one thing.
Jaune: 'Is my family truly okay?'
The more he thought of his family the less he thought about his current circumstance and the more he began to cry. This was not new to him even back at the castle he recently found himself crying himself to sleep when he thought of his family. All the excitement and joy had left the poor boy; leaving behind anxiety for what's to come and sadness of being left behind... of being abandoned and forgotten by his family.
/ / /
Before any of you come at me, yes I decided to make Neo a guy. Why, because when making this chapter I had a certain fanart of Neo as a femboy stuck in my head and thought fuck it why not.
Specifically this image by cslucaris

Also I just love femboy if that wasn’t obvious.

WIP Zutara Month Challenge: Meet Cute/Ugly
Honestly, this one is a bit of a challenge for me. Not that I could not do meet cute, but mostly because I associate meet cutes/ ugly with modern stuff. And while I have dabbled with modern stuff, I have been trying to stay closer to the time period of the characters - at least for me.
Definitely can recommend one or two meet cutes that are pretty sweet and fit that modern feel.
As for this challenge, I think I am going to twist the prompt a bit and show a bit of a meet cute that is a set up for a bigger plot.
For context of this plot: This AU is a no war AU - well not yet at least. A version where the North and South are kinda like the same in terms of a royal class that rules over the rest, and the royal blood must rule - does not matter if male or female. There is on tradition, in order to succeed, one must be married and approve by the council of the water tribe elders to be come the ruler (it is vague because it is a fairy tale). Katara is a princess in this story and Zuko, banished from his home and sent to the Southern Water Tribe for protection, ends up meeting Katara as a young princess.
Eventually, they will grow up together. Zuko becomes her personal knight/ guardian as she gets more rambunctious, but they grow and care for one another; and become close enough that they are in love. But traditions keep them apart... for now. So, here is how their meet cute went:
Zuko looked over at the training ground as he is trying to think of something to cheer his princess up from this news of having to be married to someone else. He saw the new soldiers fighting and sparing and some of them stumbling, but all the while a few laughs. Zuko chuckled as well.
"Do you remember the first time we met?" Zuko asked.
Katara glanced up at him from the ground, still had tears in her eyes a little. "What?"
"I was just thinking about the first time we met. How different things were then?" he said as he was recalling the first time Uncle brought him to Madame Kana many years ago, asking the matriarch at the time to take him under his wing after an incident scarred and banished him. Zuko was shut down then, and had a bandage over his left eye so he could not see or hear much.
Katara thought about it as she nodded. "I recall. Sokka and I were trying to see what was going on. And it did not help the grown ups were trying to shoo us away while your uncle and Gran Gran were talking."
Zuko nodded. "I don't remember much of what they were talking about. But there was something that caught my attention that day."
Katara looked up at him softly. "What caught your attention?"
Zuko glanced down at her, his golden eyes seemed to flicker with a teasing look. "A pair of soft blue eyes that was being too fussy about leaving and not missing out on something new."
Katara rolled her eyes and smirked. "Well not my fault I was curious."
"Curious enough to try and sneak glances at me as I was being escorted to the training halls?" Zuko teased as he thought about it.
It was a hard day for him as his uncle basically asked Zuko to hide him away. That much he knew. As he got older, the details were clearer to him as to why, and talks with his uncle and Lu Ten over letters, and even with the matriarch herself explaining to him why, it made sense. But the pain then as a child being left behind in a world so foreign from his own, and with people that did not seem to like him or want him. And yet a waterbending princess seemed to follow and break the rules to keep watching him. Staring at him like she was trying to figure out something about him that drew her to him.
Katara blushed as she turned her face away. "I just wanted to make sure you got there safely. It is only right."
"If that is what you say, my princess," he smirked as he looked away.
Katara returned her gaze up at him as he was looking away. "If I recall, you were not exactly the most talkative and seemed to have more bite to you than what the other guards were willing to put up with. And at least I was the only one willing to face you. Even Sokka would not spar with you until you were finished training."
Zuko chuckle as he nodded as well. "True. Even if I was doing the same exercises, no one really wanted to fight against a fire bender. Given our reputations."
Katara stiffened as she looked away again. She remembered following Zuko out of fear that maybe he would snap at someone, and while he did, Katara did not see him use firebending like the rumors said. If anything, he was just a scared kid, doing his best to not give the others reasons to attack him. Well give them reasons to hurt him more than she knew they did as she would find him in the sick bay, beat and hurt. And how she saw his scar the first time.
Katara took a breath as she spoke: "Firebenders are more than capable of showing compassion and care. You just need to let others see it."
Zuko looked at her and nodded. "You remembered?"
Katara nodded. "Of course, I remembered it vividly," she said softly. "It was the first time you let me heal you. Even if you were snappy."
Zuko chuckled again. "Well can you blame me when an nearly 8 year old comes up and heals you and has more wisdom in her words than half the grown ups? I thought you were mocking me at first."
Katara rolled her eyes. "If I was mocking you, I would have challenged you to sparring."
"You did that too. And then rightfully kicked my butt," Zuko added as he smiled.
Katara smiled. "I still think you let me win then. I was no where near good as I am now."
And going to stop there, otherwise, I will go all night. But this one, I do hope to make into a story. But I just need to figure out when. If people are interested, please let me know!

lrb Guardian Tales having gender choices for the protagonist, but choosing to treat the female choice as the "most canon"(rare for gacha games) really made me realize the psychology behind this "self-insert man" thing that some games do.
It took me a while to realize that the most likely reason why Guardian Tales puts only the female Knight in promo, the 4koma and even in some events, is because they're avoiding the gacha fans who see male Knight as their self insert. Gacha fans see female Knight as her own character, while male Knight is supposed to be them. Thus if GT focuses more on the female Knight, they're avoiding people getting pissed off when Knight isnt acting like they fantasize they would.
Whats funny is that this is pretty clear when you look at some part of the fandom; male Knight is treated by the average gacha player as this harem chad. Meanwhile the female Knight is often more varied in her personality and relationship with other characters (...Gacha fans are also more willing to admit defeat when she loses a fight, instead of malding for eternity about it)
This applies to pretty much every gacha game, even when the MC's gender is unknown, like Arknight's Doctor. If the Doc is a guy, they're literally me. if Doc is a girl, then she's mostly treated as her own character.

( HENRY CAVILL, HOMOSEXUAL, MALE & HE/HIM ) — by the grace of the gods, old and new, i present to you SERAPHIM the GRAND SORCERER within the lands of CASTHER. the gods have blessed us with their presence for 200 years. many know them to be RESOURCEFUL, WISE, KIND, and while it is not always shown, it is said they can also be TRUSTING, EAGER, AND STUBBORN. what will their tale in the story of metia be? only they can write it, so let’s see how their legend unfolds.
🔹 Name: Seraphim 🔹 Alias/Nickname(s): Give him some? 🔹 Age: 200 🔹 Pronouns: He/Him 🔹 Species: Sorcerer 🔹 Location: Seraphim 🔹 Occupation: Grand Sorcerer
🔹 Faceclaim: Henry Cavill
⚔ Weapons & Combat Style: Seraphim is skilled with most weapons and is skilled in non-fatal hand-to-hand combat.
🌿 Abilities & Skills:Seraphim's skills with the seven wonders are:
Expertise: Abjuration.
Proficient: Conjuration, Enchantment, Evocation
OK: Transmutation, Illusions, Divination
Seraphim is also a skilled cook and chef.
⚔ Personality: Reaching a hefty 6'2. Some people would refer to Seraphim as a gentle giant. A patient and nurturing man, many people are surprised to hear that he comes from such a rough start. However his family had always taught him to be kind despite their financial struggles, and even to this day Seraphim tries his best to honor them with that despite no longer having a surname and the fact that he's outlived them now.
💀 Backstory:
Seraphim was born into a humble family of chefs in the peaceful kingdom of Casther, where he spent his childhood learning the delicate craft of cooking. His parents owned a well-loved tavern, a gathering place for weary travelers, farmers, and traders alike. From a young age, he developed a keen understanding of balance—not just in flavors but in life itself. He found solace in the rhythmic chopping of vegetables, the steady warmth of the hearth, and the joy of nourishing others.
But at fourteen, the balance he had known was shattered.
One evening, as he prepared a stew, a sudden burst of energy surged from his hands. The boiling pot tipped over, yet instead of scalding the floor, the liquid hit an invisible barrier, hovering midair before harmlessly dripping down. His parents gasped as plates that should have shattered upon falling were caught in shimmering force fields. The power that had awakened within him was undeniable.
Soon after, the envoys from Solanis School for Magical Pedagogy arrived, and despite his protests, Seraphim was taken from his family and home.
At Solanis, Seraphim quickly learned that his connection to Abjuration magic was remarkably strong. Unlike many mages who sought destruction or deception, his gift was one of protection and preservation. He could conjure impenetrable barriers, redirect attacks, and create warding circles to shield allies from harm. His abilities in healing magic also flourished, allowing him to mend wounds and soothe ailments.
Though he learned the other disciplines—dabbling in conjuration for practical uses—his heart was never in the summoning arts. He did not seek to create weapons or creatures but to stand between danger and those who could not protect themselves.
While most young mages were drawn to power or wisdom, Seraphim longed for the life he had left behind. The laughter of a busy tavern, the scent of fresh bread, the warmth of family. He knew he could never return to it, but he vowed to protect others so they might never lose their own peace.
Upon completing his studies at fifty, Seraphim refused the safety of Solanis or a court position. Instead, he wandered the roads of Metia, making his coin as a guardian of travelers. He healed the wounded, shielded caravans from bandits and creatures, and stood against monstrous threats that preyed on the weak. His reputation grew as the wandering mage, a mage who asked for little yet gave much.
By the time he reached seventy-five, warriors began to seek him out. Knights, witchers, and even dragonriders recognized his value—not as a soldier, but as a battlefield healer.
Despite the bloodshed, Seraphim never fought for conquest or glory. His role was not to kill but to ensure that those who fought for just causes survived to see another day.
At ninety-eight, the royal court of his homeland (Casther) offered him a position as Apprentice Mage. Though reluctant, he accepted, believing it was time to protect his homeland in a greater capacity. And after a few years, he was moved up to Grand Sorcerer. His skill, tactical mind, and unwavering presence quickly earned him the title of Grand Sorcerer, making him one of the kingdom’s most valued advisors.
Even now, Seraphim remains an unconventional court mage—more at home among warriors than nobles, more comfortable in a worn cloak than ceremonial robes.
And though he serves Casther, the road will always call to him.

Name: Percival
Class: Lancer
Noble Phantasm: Longinus Count Zero
Species: Human (Servant)
Gender: Cis Male; he/him
Height: 6'4’’ (195 cms)
Alignment: Lawful Good
Origin: Britain
———–
Personality:
+ Protective, loyal, trustworthy, chivalrous
- Can be a bit stubborn, sometimes things fly over his head
A sincere knight who values decorum, he has been described as pure-hearted on occasion. Acting calmly without doubting or losing his temper at others, Percival known well for his patience – a trait that must have been necessary for some of his more bullheaded comrades. Percival is well-liked by children and animals that meet him for the first time, though said person is unaware of this fact. When he was alive, he used to stand in Camelot's garden in the morning sunlight, letting little birds rest on his shoulders and arms.
It is during battle that he shows a harsher side of himself, but this shift is seen only during battle. He frequently fusses over his juniors, especially those younger than him as he has a tendency to take on a more guardian, or to some, big brother-like role. This extends to his fellow Servants as well as the Master whom he wishes to look after with the same tenacity. A genuine soul, Percival values honesty, and as such, does not conceal his thoughts or opinions.
History:
Percival, the Holy Knight of the Dove, was a member of the Knights of the Round Table led by King Arthur, holding the 2nd Seat. There are many tales of Percival’s birth, though if asked about his home, he will casually state that he was raised in a forest by his mother. The details after that are not important – so he would say. What was, was that he came to prove himself worthy of becoming a Knight of the Round Table. Eventually, in time, he embarked on a quest to find the Holy Grail with Sir Galahad and Sir Bors, a quest recalled most fondly by him as he was able to bear witness to its miracle. Though there are many versions of this tale, this Percival came upon a version of the Holy Spear, Longinus, perhaps guided by fate to do so as if chosen by the spear itself to be wielded by him. Through his journey, he became an enemy to a sorcerer named Klingsor who too sought to use the Holy Spear, albeit for purposes less than pure. Attempting to bar Percival from continuing, he sent his servant, Kundry, to him in hopes that he would be bewitched, and though her kisses had the power to enthrall men with the same ease of a Siren’s song, it did not work on the Knight of the Dove.
Bearing Kundry no ill-will for her attempts at seduction, he was able to confront Klingsor, and through that battle with the assistance of the spear, claim his victory. Kundry disappeared never to be seen again, but her flowers bloomed around the throne of Klingsor’s fortress, the beauty of them remaining deep within Percival’s thoughts even as he left and eventually returned back to Camelot. What happens after all of this? What other tales are there for this knight? There are many, just as there are many for the others as well. In the end, however, he eventually fell with his beloved kingdom, dying with no regrets in his heart for he had given his all to both his king and to the place he called his home.

Since I gave Calliper such a disaster of a childhood and social life, coming up with Guardians for her was quite a chore.
I literally had to ask myself: "If I was a tone-deaf mind flayer, digging through the memories of a half-drow with huge self-esteem issues, slavery trauma, deep mistrust for drow, and a general feeling of inadequacy because of her origin...what image should I come up with to gain her trust?"
Option # 1. Personal high elf hero with a shining tadpole

Since Calliper hates drow, who is the opposite of drow? High elves, of course. Graceful and benevolent beings, sun-kissed folk attuned to Fey and wonderful magic, such a stark contrast with spiders, webs, and darkness of the Underdark. Oh, but they are so untouchable, aren't they? So distant. What are the chances of meeting one? Of having such an elf treat her like someone equal, worthy of respect, deserving mentoring and protection? Wouldn't it be wonderful? Doesn't Calliper secretly seek to be accepted at least by someone of her kin, especially those so viciously hated by drow? Wouldn't she trust such a guardian, who came to her when she needed him the most, with her life?
(Spoiler: not really. Calliper has met a few High Elves in her life, and all she got was raised eyebrows, side eyes, and mixed looks of pity. To her, they truly were something distant - while she didn't explicitly hate them, she always felt there was no point in connecting with them. They would never understand. So, while the presence of a handsome and mysterious elven knight, straight from heroic tales, would have been a huge relief in her condition, and it felt nice to be acknowledged and cared for, Calliper has never exactly dreamt about such a hero - and at that point, she gave up trying to impress non-drow Tel`Quessir, so she would treat his offers with suspicion)
Option # 2. "I'm just like you!...No, seriously, I'm literally the male version of you"

Yes, no drow allowed in Calliper's headspace...but what about a fellow half-blood? Finally, someone, who looks like her, who had been through same shit as her and who understands her fears, and concerns - and is there to protect her because he know her struggles and wants to make it better. Together, they can make it through this nightmare. She doesn't have to be alone. She doesn't have to be afraid. Now, open your mind to this tadople, Calliper. Don't worry, you're not alone anymore. He will take care of you.
(This version works better with tugging at Calliper's strings. Her need for belonging at least somewhere shows. While the odds of two half-drows finding each other in ther weirdest of circumstances are sus, just too good to be true, the prospect of finding a kindred soul may have Calliper acting unwise. On the other hand, the experience with her patron taught her that she better not act unwise in her dreams and visions -- it didn't take much for her to accidentally attach herself to the forces beyond her and everyone else's comprehension. She doesn't want to repeat that. Also, if he is half-drow like her, doesn't he know how dangerous tadpoles are? Why would he want her to insert more of these things into her brain?)
Option # 3. "Mother knows best"

The Emperor's cruelest and the most fucked up way to get Calliper's trust and attention -- take a dive into her most vulnerable memories and hopes, and carve them into an avatar for himself. Because even though Calliper tries not to reflect on the obstacles of her birth, she never really stopped asking herself "What if...?". What if her mother never ended up a slave in the Underdark, never went through all of this? What if she, Calliper, was a normal girl, a welcome child, born in a loving union, somewhere under the sun? What if she was born in the world where her mother wanted her?
How would she look like? How would she sound like? How hugging her would feel like? How would it feel to have someone caring and supportive, proud of her and there for her?...
She doesn't even remember the face of the woman who was her mother. Only fragments, none of them happy or pleasant. She knows that she had to be human and that she hated her. And Calliper didn't blame her. She could care less about what happened to her biological father (hopefully, he met his brutal death, got eaten alive, and shat out by a bulette). Still, the thought of having all these powers and being unable to find and wrestle just one more person from the darkness of the Underdark and take her home kept her awake at night more than once.
And then, there it is...an oddly familiar face. A protective touch. A kind smile. Calm, motherly demeanor. Calliper has never met this woman before, yet she radiates comfort and safety. How natural would it feel to trust her? To follow her advice? To hug her as she hides her pain and exhaustion from constantly shielding them from harm?
(I hate myself for coming up with this idea. This is so fucking unfair. It's manipulation at its vilest, and it would have worked. It would have convinced Calliper to consume another tadpole at least once. And, of course, she would be ruined after learning about the deception. Fucking devastated. She'll put two and two together, realize what the Emperor did and have a mental breakdown.)
#bg3 oc: calliper#baldur's gate 3#bg3#designing dream guardians turned into uncanny mr.incredible meme#i'd want to say that the emperor isn't THAT ruthless but somehow i imagine he'd totally go with option three#to him morality is relevant and trauma is just brain reaction#brains can be tweaked#results are only things that matter#cw: abuse#cw: sa mention#i made my choice but i still feel i'll redo it if i don't feel like this is the way the story should go

Adventures and Tribulations (Part 1)
Summary: You'd always heard stories of Camelot on your travels, so you finally decide to go and see it for yourself. Especially as you'd heard that your friend Gwaine was residing there currently. However, Camelot always seems to attract unwanted attention. Will you get mixed up in these troubling times?
Pairing(s): Male Reader / Knights of Camelot / Merlin / Arthur Pendragon
A/N: Hello all! Thank you for choosing to read this fanfiction! Just here to quickly say, incase the summary doesn't explain it properly; The reader is Male and this will be an eventual Polyamorous relationship. It may start off as competitive, but eventually everyone will be together (even if all of them may not love each other, they all love the reader)! Also, Gwen and Morgana are definitely very gay for each other and love the reader in a platonic way. Anyway, enjoy! 🫶
You've always enjoyed travelling throughout Britain. You enjoyed hearing the tales of other people's travels while in the taverns and finding new wildlife in each kingdom you passed through. Through your travels you'd heard a lot about the famous kingdom Camelot. It was rather hard not to hear about said kingdom, as it seemed it was getting attacked almost every week. Although, you had heard good things about the new king and his knights.
You smiled at the thought of the stories of Camelot as you drank mead from your wooden cup. You were in a Tavern not too far away from Camelot, in the boundaries of Cenred's kingdom. You rather disliked the ruler of this kingdom, but the towns were always welcoming and the taverns had great prices, so you couldn't complain to much. You finish your drink before putting it down on the table you were sat at. You stand up, scraping the chair against the floor as you did.
"Off again, are ya?" You heard the barkeep ask, smiling at you as they picked up your cup.
You nod and put your satchel around your neck, that had been hanging on the back of your chair. "Yes, I'm going to head to Camelot."
"Oh right, anything in particular?" They ask, raising an eyebrow. "Trading?"
You chuckle and shake your head. "Actual, I'm going to visit an old friend. I heard that he's been staying there." You roll your eyes as you say, "Gotta make sure he's not making trouble for them. Trouble always follows him!"
"Well, good luck, just stay safe. That place is always getting attacked!"
"Aw, are you worried about me?" You ask, laughing along with the barkeep.
"Tch, only for ya money! You're a regular, can't loose my best customer!"
You laugh and wave at them as you walk out of the tavern, allowing them to tend to the other customers.
Readjusting the satchel on your shoulders, you look up at the sky as you walked towards the woods. It was slowly turning orange and pink as the sun set past the trees. You always loved seeing the pretty colours that nature had to offer, especially during the sunset and sunrise, but you particularly liked looking at the night sky. As you travelled a lot, you were adapt at travelling by using the stars to navigate, so you hoped it would stay clear tonight so you could find your way to Camelot.
As you ventured into the woods, the air felt crisp against your skin, and the scent of damp earth permeated the atmosphere. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves, creating a soothing symphony of nature. The towering trees stood like guardians, their branches reaching towards the heavens, creating a lush canopy overhead that dappled sunlight onto the forest floor. With each step, the ground beneath your feet embraced you, the softness of the moss and fallen leaves providing a natural cushion. At least if you were to trip, the leaves and moss would soften the blow. I could hear the gentle crunch of twigs and leaves, reminding me that you were not alone in this tranquil wilderness, as creatures of all kinds travelled through this wood. Various creatures scurried and chirped, blending harmoniously with the melodious songs of birds perched high in the branches.
Eventually, you stumble upon a babbling brook. Its crystal-clear waters flowing gracefully over smooth pebbles, the rising moon dancing in the reflection. The gentle murmur of the stream was a soothing lullaby, inviting you to pause and appreciate the simple beauty that surrounded you. You dipped your hand into the cool water, feeling its refreshing touch and allowing yourself to be momentarily transported to a state of pure tranquillity.
Before you could be entranced by the babbling brook any longer, you continued on your journey. As you raised your head to look up at the sky, you watched the branches sway in the gentle wind. You watched the sky for a second, stopping in your tracks. You watched as the sky lit up with stars and the moon's gaze. You always appreciated the moon and how she cared the her stars in her beautiful sky, while watching as the stars twinkled as if to say thank you for accommodating them. You analysed the stars patterns, using them to find the direction towards Camelot, before you started walking again.
After a few more hours of walking, you took notice of how tired you were feeling. It must be late at this point, so you thought that you'd settle there for the night. You had no trouble so far, so you wished that none would come when you slept. Of course, you greatly admired and respected nature, so you wished that nature will also respect you. You set your satchel down on the ground, before lying on the floor, using some fallen leaves for a pillow, of sorts. You yawn, before letting your eyes shut and fall into a gentle slumber.
As you slowly come back into consciousness, you recognise the calling of birds from above your head. You open your eyes and go to sit up to stretch, before noticing a fawn curled up on your stomach. You smile softly at the sight, before checking the animal for any wounds. From this angle, you couldn't tell of any, so you were relieved. However, it did bring up the question upon where they're mother was. Usually fawns aren't seen away from their mothers for very long, but it seems this fawn had been asleep with you for a while.
Before you could think more on the subject, the fawn opened its eyes and raised its head to look at you. As they did, you could have sworn you saw a twinkle in their eyes. You sat up, gently placing the deer in your lap. Seeing that the fawn wasn't upset in the slightest, you gently pet the animal, smiling as they seemed happy from the affection they were receiving. You continued to pet them as you looked around, concerned about the fawn's safety.
"Where is your mother, little one?" you asked gently, looking at the fawn in concern.
In response, the deer climbed off your lap and tugged at the sleeve of your top. Your eyebrows furrow, before you grab your satchel and get to your feet. Although you had planned on heading straight to Camelot when you had woken, this was more important to you now.
You followed the fawn as it led you through the forest. After about half an hour, you lost track of time, but diligently followed the poor fawn. Every so often you would offer the deer some water, before you'd both set off again. It wasn't much of a treacherous walk, so you were glad about that, but you were beginning to wonder if this fawn knew where they were going.
After a little more walking, you seemed to have reached where the fawn was looking to take you, as they turned back to you and came to your side. You looked around before seeing a castle through the treeline. You laugh slightly in awe.
"It seems you've taken me exactly where I've wanted," you said, before looking down at the fawn. You smile and pet their head. "Thank you, I appreciate your assistance."
The fawn jumps a few times, as if excited before running off into the woods. You hoped they would find their mother, and that you'd be able to see them again in your travels.
You then walk up the beaten path towards the gates of Camelot. It was clear many people had come this way, as they had created a path of their own towards the cobbled path. You walked towards the guarded entrance and nodded respectfully to them, thanking them for letting you enter; even though anyone could.
You looked around as you walked through the streets, looking between stalls and different houses. There were many people walking about, some doing chores while others were simply looking to trade at the stalls. As you neared the castle grounds, you thought to yourself that you actually didn't know where to find your friend, as you hadn't been in contact with him for a while. Spotting some more guards, you walk over to them.
"Excuse me?"
"Yes sir?" One answers, holding his spear in one hand.
"I'm looking for an old friend of mine. You wouldn't happen to know where Gwaine would be? Usually found in taverns, and.. no that's about it," you ask, chuckling at the end.
The two guards look between each other, before the other answers, "Do you mean Sir Gwaine?"
You laugh and say, "Good one. But no seriously, he's usually in taverns."
"Yes, that sounds like Sir Gwaine," the first replied, shrugging.
You looked confused, before deciding that it would just be best to see for yourself. "Um, alright. Well, where is Sir Gwaine then?"
"He'd be training with the other knights. They're on your right once you enter the castle grounds," the same guard says.
"Right. Thank you for your help."
You smile to them in thanks, before walking into the castle grounds like instructed. As you did, you looked to your right and saw what you assumed were knights training together. You were a ways away, so you couldn't really tell any features yet. You were certain the guards must have mistaken your Gwaine for someone else, but it was better safer than sorry.
You walk closer in the direction, one hand holding the strap of your satchel. As you got closer, you could see the telltale hair of your friend. You were shocked to say the least, as you'd known Gwaine to hate nobility. You raise your eyebrow, watching his one-of-a-kind fighting skills.
"That's definitely Gwaine, alright.." You mutter to yourself, shaking your head slightly to get rid of the shock.
You watch as the training seems to be stopping, at least for now, so you take this as an opportunity to approach the group. As you do, you spot a man without armour sat on the side-lines watch you intently. You assume that they're probably a servant, but you didn't have much time to dwell on that thought, as you were approaching your friend.
"Gwaine, is that you?" You ask, a few steps away from your friend. He turns around and looks at you in shock, before you ask with a smirk, "Or should I be calling you Sir Gwaine now?"
Gwaine grins and dashes up to you, pulling you into a hug and swinging you around. You laugh happily as he did, happy to see him once again. As you're placed on the floor you hear a cough from behind you. All of the knights were looking in your direction with confused looks on their faces, especially the blonde man who had his eyebrow raised.
"Are you going to introduce us, Gwaine?" the Blonde man asks; who you assumed was the one who coughed.
Gwaine chuckles softly and wraps an arm around your shoulders, leaning on you. "Right of course. Everyone, this is Y/n, my oldest friend."
"Hey, no need to make it sound like I'm old, you twit," you tease, gently hitting him in the stomach; which was useless as he was wearing armour.
Gwaine smirks at you. "Well, you're as old as me, so you're pretty old, mate."
"Oh, shut your trap."
A few of the knights step forward to greet you, so you shake Gwaine off. You take the hand of a man with darker skin than yours, who had a slight mischievous glint in his eyes, as he introduces himself. "Hello, my name is Elyan. It's nice to meet someone else who's also put up with Gwaine."
You chuckle and reply with a 'same to you'. Another man holds out his hand so you take it. He had dark hair, similar to Gwaine's, but shorter and tidier. He smiles at you gently, and through his eyes you could tell he was an understanding soul. "I'm Lancelot, it's a pleasure to meet you, Y/n."
A third man holds out his hand, to which you take. Although the man is extremely muscular, the tender way he holds your hand shows how gentle he truly is. "My name's Percival, I'm glad to meet you."
Finally, the blonde man walks closer to you, before holding out his hand. The handshake was firm and proper, exactly how you imagined a knight to shake hands. "And I am Arthur, welcome to Camelot."
Your jaw drops, before you turn to look at Gwaine. You slap him around the back of his head; causing the reaction of 'what the hell!' from him; before asking incredulously, "You didn't think to mention that I was interrupting you training with the King?!"
"But we'd just finished! And I was happy to see you!" He complained, rolling his eyes. "Plus, he's nothing but a princess."
Arthur rolled his eyes at Gwaine's words. "Although I hate to admit it, Gwaine was right. We have finished our training for the day." He then turns to Gwaine and says, "As long as you don't waste all of your money in the tavern, I'll allow you the day off duties to show Y/n around, if you'd like."
The other knights grown in annoyance, making you chuckle. Gwaine's face lights up, and before Arthur could take back his statement, he grabs your arm and yanks you away. Before you could complain, you realised he was pulling you towards the man you had seen analysing you as you approached.
"Merlin, meet my friend Y/n," Gwaine says, patting Merlin on the back. He turns to you and adds, "Merlin has helped save our lives a lot, even if he's a clutz half the time."
"Oi!" Merlin complains, before laughing with Gwaine.
"Oh dear, are there two Gwaine's..?"
They both laugh at your joke, before Merlin offers to help show you around with Gwaine. You were excited to learn more about Merlin and how Gwaine had happened to manage to get a Knighthood. Seems like coming to Camelot was certainly the best idea you'd had in a long time.

An article I thought was worded pretty funny in hindsight. Of course, I couldn't enhance the picture.
About David Copperfield and Girl on the Beach.
Nantwich Guardian - Thursday 21 May 1959
Transcription:
On the time machine
"Sir Lancelot" was a successful British export, but William Russell, who played this heroic knight of the Round Table, has hopped on to the private time machine they keep at the TV film studios and has sped forward into the 19th century.
William is now filming for the new "Tales from Dickens" series, in which he plays David Copperfield.
He has also been reharsing for the male lead in "Girl on the Beach," which is Sunday's ABC "Armchair Theatre" play. This is a thriller somewhat after the Hitchcock style and is set in France and England.
Like many thrillers, "Girl on the Beach" centres round a case of loss of memory. We'll know on Sunday just how original you can get woth such a theme.

Thirteenth Century English Faerie Stories
Gervase of Tilbury (1150–1228) published Recreation for an Emperor (Otia Imperialia), a collection of hundreds of tales about the mysterious wonders of nature, between 1210 and 1214, and it contains one of the earliest references to fairies.
Between 1100 and 1250, authors wrote numerous romances that depict interactions between human protagonists and human-like entities with opulent lifestyles and unique abilities. They serve as lovers, advisors, guardians, and occasionally prey on human knights and women in their relationships. People typically think of these creatures as enigmatic, rather than thoroughly describing them. At times, people describe them as inherently superhuman, while others describe them as human individuals who have acquired magic. Numerous reports exist of people attempting to verify the accuracy of fairy tales. Wace, a poet from Jersey, is well-known for visiting the magical Brocéliande woodland in the middle of the twelfth century to learn about the stone of Barenton, which caused rain to fall when water was thrown on it.

The Arthurian cycle contains two of the most well-known fairy tales. One relates to Merlin, Arthur's prophet, and his lineage. Geoffrey of Monmouth described how a gorgeous young man who could appear and disappear at will visited Merlin's mother in her convent in Historia Regum Britanniae (History of the Kings of Britain). The narrative, despite depicting a demon, bears a striking resemblance to tales of invisible male fairy lovers. Furthermore, everyone agreed that women, whom the poet Layamon referred to as "the fairest of all elves," had transported Arthur to the Isle of Avalon, sparing him from death.
By the middle of the thirteenth century, English sources contained an international literary tradition of beautiful, wealthy, and powerful fae; a native tradition of elves as blighting, possibly healing, and seductive beings; and a third category of varied human-like creatures that overlapped with the first two but did not fit into either.
Efforts were underway to give such figures a coherent framework of belief by the end of the thirteenth century. The South English Legendary, a Middle English text, defines Elven as former angels exiled to Earth for their neutrality during the heavens' conflict, which led to the deportation of rebellious angels to hell. There, they assumed the form of stunning women who played and danced in remote locations, where males were at risk of having sex with them. Robert of Gloucester's Chronicle from the mid-thirteenth century described elvene as spirits who frequently appeared as seductive men and women in untamed areas.
