Kai Anderson & James Patrick March fusion
彡 What would they look like fused?
Name: Benjamin 'Benji' Antero March
Species: Ghoul
Age: late twenties
Sex & Gender: Male & Cisgender
Sexuality: Omnisexual
Height: 5'10"
Eye color: gray
Hair color & style: blue with black roots, medium-length, half bun
Clothes: academia aesthetic— trench coats, button up shirts, dress pants, pocket watch, ascots, suits
Extra attributes: healed scar on his neck, dimples, four arms, chest tattoo of his kill count that goes up everytime he kills someone new, and vitiligo
彡 Who is dominant in the fusion?
• Equally dominant
█████ 50% Kai Anderson
█████ 50% James Patrick March
彡 Personality & Background
Canon Background:
Kai Anderson came to the Cortez after one of his ex-cult members fled to the hotel after betraying him. While killing the ex-cult member in their bed, James appeared before him. They spoke and realized they had similar ideals. James is a serial killer, and Kai is a cult leader. They have their differences when it comes to James's gentlemanly attitude. He is sincere in that fact, and with Kai, it is just a facade. The thing that rests underneath the both of them is unhinged and equally twisted.
They fused because of James manipulation. While fused, they are equally dominant, but James always has a bit of an edge against Kai while de-fused. They fused after killing the family of a wealthy governor who had crossed Kai.
Together, they are Bejamin, or Benji for short. Benji is a serial killer cultist. Kais inner circle of his cult moves into the Cortez, and the rest of his devoted followers live around them or will commit to traveling there for meetings. Benji teaches his inner circle how to kill effectively and how to use the hotel, mostly. If someone were to betray him, he still has enough tricks up his sleeve to rid them from this world.
He has the hotel Cortez upgraded with new floors and even more intricate traps and killing places. If the Cortez was a murder hotel before, now it's a massacre hotel. Benji constantly has the authorities coming under cover and snooping in his palace of death. They all disappear without a trace of their whereabouts.
Benji rarely defuses. The large milestone he defuses for is Devil's Night. As well as whenever Kai has to do his work and give speeches.
Kai and James have to share partners. James refuses to allow anyone to fall into Kai's— unrefined ways, and Kai just wants to show James that he is able to steal from his selection of lovers. Kai gets insecure around James, and James exploits that. Apart, they are definitely yanderes, but Benji is like yandere turned up in every single category. Any partner, hookup, or flirt is either deadmeat or his soul mate.
You fall for Benji? You are dating Kai and James as well. You fall for Kai? James and Benji. You fall for James? Well, Kai and Benji. Those are the rules. You have to abide by them, or you are just another body in the never-ending pile.
Personality:
First off, Benji has Kias misogyny and James gentleman-like nature. Benji is a condescending and protective misogynist. In his mind, he doesn't hate women; they aren't below him. They just need to be protected. They just need to be explained to. He just needs to guide them in the right manner. He doesn't need a traditional wife. He just needs a man, woman, non-binary, etc. who will listen.
Definitely a Lawful Evil type. Benji is straight-up vile and evil, but he has his own code. He doesn't kill in other people's territory without their permission. He doesn't let others kill inside his territory, the Cortez, without his permission. He doesn't leave a mess. He doesn't make a sound, but his victims do. His killing style is very much inspired by art, especially religious art. He uses the blood of his enemies for paintings that he hangs in the Cortez. Of course he dilutes the blood enough so that if you test it no blood match will come of it. He loves art galas.
An ENTP, Lawful Evil, cultist, serial killer. Quite a handful. As I said, another rule of his is that you have to listen. That is his most important rule. Those who don't listen, disappear. He doesn't give anyone second chances... except maybe you (reader).
✉ Sidenote: I could also make an original character that could be his lover??? And then I could also write about him with just a reader insert??? OC lover? Yes or no.
Very yandere. Not even gonna lie— possessive, obsessive, meticulous, and manipulative. He's still oddly wholesome on a weird level. This is because of how at odds some of Kais and James characteristics are. He will pull up in a limousine to McDonald's just to order some chicken nuggets. I am talking about him having his nicest clothes on and everything. The next moment he is in the Cortez eating a five star meal with foods you are unable to pronounce the names of.
Since he is a ghoul and part James— he does have to eat human flesh to partly sustain himself. The blood is more of a mere delicacy to him. He keeps blood wines for special occasions. The first time Kai came across this while they were defused he was like... "James wtf-???"
James merely explained that it must have been Benji that did so. James is more experienced with fusing because he has lived longer and fused with a few people. However, Kai has never fused stably with anyone before. James was his first. Kai often complains that James being his first real fusion sounds so gay. He fused with Winter once on accident and they were unstable. So they were only fused for like maybe five to ten minutes. Kai declared that he would never stoop as low as to fuse with a woman again. Yeah, yeah, homophobic Reddit incel— all of the bitches want to fuse with you.
彡 Abilities & Weapons
• Knife proficiency, Gunmanship, Swordsmanship
• Wealth, Intellect, Charisma, Hacking
• Control over the supernatural entities in the Cortez, Ghostly powers (will probably be expanded upon at a future date)
• Leadership skills/Cultist, Master killer
Benji gets very creative with his killing. He only really has one specialized weapon from his fusion. His pocket watch. Ah, ah! Hold on. Do not click off just because I said pocket watch. Stay with me here.
His pocket watch has a secret compartment that he is able to keep a vial of untraceable poison in. One drop is enough to kill an entire country. One vial of it is worth half a billion dollars. So of course when he is serving intimate dinners he will tell Ms. Evers to slip a drop in— just so the dearest guest that he hates with his guts dies mysteriously. (Inspired by when Kai made them drink the kool-aid and it wasn't poisoned. tehe. except now Benji has a vial to poison the 'kool-aid'.)
彡 Dialog(s)
"Hmm? Well, this is new. I can't wait to kill in this new body." - Benji's first words; Kai and James fusing for the first time
"Darling, don't be a slut. Men don't like women that are sluts for everyone. They only like women who are sluts for them." - Benji right before killing his one night stand who was a hooker
"Who says I can't achieve world domination and kill while doing it? I am a very skilled multi-tasker." - To the Countess
"Shut the fuck up! Shut it, just shut up! Can't you do one thing right in your miserable, pathetic little life? One thing. One thing I ask of you and yet you failed!" - To Ms. Evers after she ruined his brand new suit while trying to clean the blood out of it
"Fail again and you will have a second death. Twice as long. Twice as painful. And twice the fun for me." - Benji threatening one of his dead followers after they failed to kill someone for him
"I would be terribly sorry for making you wait. Except, I see no manwich. I kill for you, I satisfy your carnal desires, I give you the greatest and most pure form of love. I provide you all you would ever need and more. Yet, when I ask for a manwich—! You cannot fucking make it. You know, dearie, I absolutely despise people who can't listen. Isn't that all I have ever asked of you? To listen." - Benji speaking to a, now ex and dead, partner of his; referenced below
"Ah, oh, yes. maniacal giggles You are fucked. In both ways." - to a freshly made ex-partner of his
"Are you done playing your little games? Holy water, a salt ring, a set of rosary beads— it's all so thrilling. Your need to resist me. Your attempts to make yourself seem more safe. You are dead, but don't accept it. I want to see the fear in your eyes as the life leaves them." - to a nun before he kills her
"Are you a homosexual? How repulsively tempting." - Benji flirting with a CEO to get his guard down so he is able to hack into his computer and steal all of the CEO's money and secrets
-ˋˏ✄┈┈┈┈
✉ a/n: I really tried to successfully combine both of their personalities. I'm afraid that some of Kai's discord kitten energy got drowned out by James's old timey-ness... since they are an equally dominant fusion I tried to mix both of their traits together equally. I was thinking of doing a combination of either Kit & FrankenKyle or Jimmy Darling & FrankenKyle next... or Tate & FrakenKyle. I just love Kyle sm. He's such a sweet baby. Thank you for listening to my rants. Remember that you are important and loved :) And if no one told you today, thank you for being alive 💕.

not really a drawing request but id love to know more about your ocs??? from what you’ve posted they look amazing??
Thank you VERY much!!! i forgot how much i love to talk about them
(sorry for the old art or picrews, i am too excited to not talk about them and simultaneously not patient enough to redraw them)
All picrew links: Kit + Kevín + Lilly Annalise Piper + Cecily Mikael + Claire Princeton
here's a general overview of everything that exists:
-------------
part 1: em groups
you should at least be vaguely familiar with my em. every single au and whatever hetalia character i feel like grabbing for that day goes in there. interesting little tidbit that somehow hasn't come up so far is that in more human AUs of mine he's part irish! ~20% of icelandic males and 60% of females actually have irish/keltic ancestry!!! ireland being his mom hc is going WILD in me. he's also very magic because that headcanon singlehandedly started the ice obsession in me. how well in tune he is with it and how exactly it looks like depends on the au . i also make him closer friends with swe and fin because i can👍
(excerpt from my em content dedicated whatsapp group with just my (non-hetalia) best friend and me: )
le is there a lot because i love him so so much. incredibly phoenix coded man
there's also monaco, gwendolyn or gwenny to me. she's a permanent resident because i support women's rights (slaying) and wrongs (gambling addictions)
a notable not fully formed character is faroe islands! petra sometimes, emma other times. i genuinely don't know where those names come from. i heard the faroe islands and iceland being referred to as "kind of like twins" and as each othere's "best friends" *somewhere* and i am VERY normal about that too. oh SO normal
part 2: mikael's world
a fusion of 2 groups put into one world, connected by one flimsy tie. it's mostly analogous to real life but no homophobia👍
Group A: Pentagon
Mikael started out as a swedish micronation oc but we don't talk about that. he has a chicken called omelette because of inside jokes during... my wattpad era... shudders. i project onto him a lot and lots of his design is just wish fullfillment. while i love my ocs suffering and angst, because i put so much of myself in him, ultimately, his story is one of healing. major point of difference between us though is that his parents abandoned him and mine... didn't.do.that. 💀👍
Claire and Piper both actually started out as minecraft skins i made for fun!! and then i made them kith:3
Cecily and Kit were added becaue i felt like something was missing to complete the friendgroup!
Group B: menace club
Kevín and Lilly are my ACNL and ACNH side accounts...... and Annalise was some pretty trans woman i drew one day there's nothing much to this
Part 3: D&D
so.. confession: i haven't actually played d&d yet! but my friends love it a lot, i love a couple ttrpg podcasts so.. yeah i have a couple concepts!
The Leighlar Pilayden, or blueberry bitchfuck as i like to call him, Half Elf sorcerer who was abandoned as a babg and raised in a cult which, in a world with multiple deities, somehow ended up believing in the *one* that doesn't exist! he's a sorcerer but they all think his powers a blessing from their god
MY BABY MY SOBBING WET CAT SON! PRINCETON INTEKONA!!!
TIEFLING BARD I might get to play as him soon... negative strength, the only reason he has such a high charisma stat is because everyone pitties him... he accidentally ended up in a criminal gang... he plays the pan flute and bagpipes... pathetic baby
Part 4: Miscellaneous
All the Characters that are alone in their worlds!
(^aesthetic wise but he definitely kins larry)
Brian is the brain cell a friend and i are sharing and also the last one we have. he's a SOO overworked office worker. he has to handle EVERYTHING he's so exhausted please give him a break. he recently got a boyfriend. good for my him
Recently re-named Ailbhe used to be Avery and is a genderless, fully white skinned(as in colour not the skin colour we associate with the word. imagine porcelaine!) and neon yellow haired fallen angel/ex-demi-god!! not much lore but... lots of potential!!
Firenze is... idk he just happened in one history lesson in 2018 and now he's here. bunny boy with lots of responsibilities around the palace!!!
-------------
and ... phew. i THINK that's it? mostly? oh my god. if. there's anyone you wanna know more about... tell ME
#how in the actual fresh hell do i tag this?#trick question#i won't tag this!#except for this#of course

Trying to be careful in how I go about this post, since it's not an accusation or slander of any kind, more of a trip down deviantart memory lane for me. I'm nervous mostly because I've seen some Lackadaisy fans and HazbinHelluva fans starting to butt heads about which animated short is better. C'mon guys, no fights or I'm putting you all on time out.
The first time and the first person who introduced myself to Tracy Butler and the Lackadaisy comic was actually Vivzmind (that's VivziePop's old da username. Will always subconsiously call her that in my head even though 'Pop' sounds better). I vividly remember Viv had filled out one of the then really popular 2010 meme template things called an "Inspiration Map", and in the bottom she had Lackadaisy and linked to Tracy's page and called it "so good". I'm 100 percent sure that much of Lackadaisy, the webcomic, inspired Viv's interest with jazz age memorabillia. I mean it was already there given that Viv loves Princess and the Frog and Chicago, but I really think Lackaidaisy had a hand in creating Husk and Angel as they were seen in 2013- onward.
Yes, I know protoAngel and Arachnis died in the 1940s and Husk died in the 60s I think (also, I think Husk's final design was mostly done by Faustisse??? the hazbin stans feel free to correct that one ), but Husk's extraevegant casino-inspired look and detailed design feels like a Hazbin fusion of Mordecai, Rocky and Zib all at once and if nothing else inspired by Tracy's grand stand alone artwork of the Lackadaisy cast. Viv takes a lot of inspiration from fellow artists and to me it's clear she mused Tracy back in the day. Meanwhile, I'm not convinced half the reason Angel was/still is a mobster is related to her love of Lackadaisy, even if he and his brother are spider things, not cats. I can't unsee it, is all I mean.
If we're talking jazz-age inspo, I think Viv's world is flashy and simple in terms of depth where Lackadaisy's characters and world is a lot more nuance and definitely more researched, than Hazbin. Viv kins Chicago way better than she does Lackadaisy with her use of aesthetics and flare. When I say I personally take issue w Viv's art it's not that I think it looks bad on principle or because "ew sexymans everywhere = bad". I like sexymans and I love Viv's style. What frustrates me and other critics of Viv's art is it's all about what looks pleasing to her at the time and that's it. For the record- that's not inherently a bad thing-
Tim Burton, in case you didn't know, works the exact same way with his personal art and why he puts certain things in his movies. Ever wonder why Oogie Boogie's theme is casinos and Mars Attacks ends in Vegas? It's literally just because Tim spent a lot of time in Vegas and thinks Vegas and casinos are cool. ((Oogie was also kind of Elfman's brainbaby and a loveletter to Fleischer, but regardless)). My issue with Viv liking herself some edgy sex jokes, bowties, skinny guys, sharp edges and loud designs isn't that they're bad on that 'draw what I feel like' principle. It's that, unlike Tim or Tracy Butler, she continues to do it in ways that kind of hurt the character's designs and even personalities. You can absolutely pitch a character as "demon who died a 40s gangster so looks like a mobster spider freak and is just as manic and obnoxious in death as he was in life"- but when you keep only some aspects of his mobster look alive and get rid of others in lieu of the new personality you've basically grafted him into; "complex sleazy pornstar who's at once unapologetic about his perviness but feels trapped and exploited by his own interests and is also named after a drug from the 80s"...it just kinda falls apart.Because almost every other male character in Hazbin and Helluva have bowties, Angel's doesn't exactly stick out or feel like either a gangster or a cheeky pornstar aesthetic. Same goes with Moxxie in Helluva- he's supposed to be a gangster from a gangster demon family, which as a twist is kind of neat but in execution kinda fails because he doesn't exactly read hitman or gangster the rest of the time even though he wears a suit. Between his personality+demeanor, Moxxie's outfit screams more...tap dancer than gangster. It feel confused and kind of overconvuluted is what I'm trying to say.
While not everyone can be Tracy Butler, by contrast you can see through the ages how her characters have come into their own through the decade since Lackadaisy started, which leaves in interesting feel for characters like Mordecai, f.e.
In the comic proper Mordecai is a straight-faced and kind of terrifying hitman who's both good at killing and getting the job done, so he feels very serious even when he's cracking jokes or playing off the goofier characters. In the years since the first volume was finished though, while Mordecai himself has stayed serious in the comic, the readers have gotten the peek into his past ahead of the 'main'-ish cast with the prequel comics about Morty and Victor working together and Mordecai still being an overly serious nerd but also a pissy neat freak. I think the latest parts of the comic featuring Mordecai have done a great job at alluding to what's funny about him while still keeping him relatively serious. It's obvious the fandom love for this character and Tracy's own love for him rubbed off on his portrayal in what exists of vol 3 so far. Tracy's also made changes and add ons to Mordecai's final character that feel consistant with the mostly basic character he was introduced as, more of a fleshing out of his character than a departure of who/what he has always been written to be.
I want so much to like, even love Viv's characters y'see, it's just that they kind of feel like Viv decides them a finished character upon first creating them and not when after she's truly introduced or finished working on them. This is the case with Angel, with Millie, with Stolas, with Lucifer. It's why I don't care for Sir Pent as his design reads too competant for the kind of folly he's ultimately supposed to be. Viv literally made him a permanent part because she just really liked his design, but what's been seen of him in and out of canon kinda shows two different types of characters the writers are desperate to insist are one in the same, or which naturally flow into the other...but they just don't? Yes, even for what is seen now. Some ppl say the way Viv's characters are fleshed out is like if the writers are writing fanfiction of their own property. It feels that way because rather than writing and designing for the sake of the character, the writers are writing for themselves. They're being self indulgent. Their appraising with the cast that doesn't feel earned because the actual depth the cast needs as characters hasn't happened yet (see also: Millie), just alluded to, and the writers being fans of their own work so much means they can't recognize that and keep up the indulgence parade. I "know", because I can recognize myself doing it when I get hyperfixated on my blorbos and so only write about them and my headcanons relating to them. The rest o the cast is important because otherwise your fav side character has nothing/no one to bounce off of. As much as I love Mordecai, the tale of Lackadaisy is not his story alone and the main character is Rocky.
Still tho, none of this should ever imply that Lackadaisy as a property is competition or better or worse than Hazbin and Helluva Boss. All of this is just *Dude voice* my opinion mayn. Even if it wasn't, both shorts and series have their own world and inspirations. Maybe all the business I laid out about Viv's writing is what's actually appealing to you as a fan and not a take away, maybe my Mordecai hypothesis doesn't cut how underwhelmed by the character and the short. IDK. While I think they have inspiration to thank for each other's existence...please don't bother the staff who worked on these or act like their problem is that one of them 'needs to be' the other. That wasn't my point. I don't want Hazbin or Helluva to be Lackadaisy at all. They're their own thing and shouldn't be treated like one in the same because of who created what and who worked on both pilots.
Let's not dip back into the time we were all "Star vs the Forces of Evil is what Steven Universe SHOULD BE, there's no way comparing these two it's a competition could cloud our judgement of either shows!!8D 8D 8D "
#helluva boss critical#hazbin hotel critical#spindlehorse critical#lackadaisy#lackadaisy critical#This entire post was a ruse to demand Angel Dust's hat back btw

Vulvoplasty Research Notes
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE RESEARCH NOTES ARE COLLECTED FOR FUTURE OPPERATION AND UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE/DURING/AFTER VULVOPLASTY AT OHSU.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS INFORMATION CAN BE ANXIEY-INDUCING TO SOME.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT IS VULVOPLASTY?
A vulvoplasty is a gender affirming genital reconstruction surgery that creates a neo-vulva from the existing genitalia. It fashions the external female genitalia but without a vaginal cavity. Depending on a few factors, this kind of surgery can have many different names, but in essence they are all the same:
Vulvoplasty
Vaginoplasty Without Cavity
Shallow / Minimal-Depth / Dimple / Limit-Depth Vaginoplasty
Cosmetic / Aesthetic Vaginoplasty
No-Depth / Zero Depth Vaginoplasty
Personally, I tend to call vulvoplasty - vaginoplasty, as my personal goal is to transition as much into a female without the addition of a uterus and ovaries (as the science hasn’t been developed to add these to the male body at this time). Calling it a vagina is logical in my mind as it affirms my gender as female. Also, most cis-females label their own reproductive organ as a ‘vagina’, including the clitoris and labia into the structure.
The outer characteristics of vulvoplasty are the same as those of vaginoplasty.
A clitoris and inner and outer labia are created, and the testicles and biological male sexual characteristics are removed and discarded.
The difference between a vulvoplasty and vaginoplasty is that a vulvoplasty provides a vaginal entrance that is up to 0 to 2 inches deep (depending on avaiable skin); whereas a vaginoplasty is usually 4-6 inches deep.
A benefit of vulvoplasty include:
1) Shorter Surgery Time (1.5 - 3 hours)
2) Shorter Inpatient Time (1 - 3 days)
3) Shorter Recovery Time (6-8 weeks)
4) No Need For Laser Hair Removal
5) No Dilation
6) Less Chance For Rectal Injury
Those seeking vulvoplasty should be aware that with no real depth, you will not be able to have penetrative sex.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW A VULVOPLASTY CREATES ‘TRUE’ FEMALE PARTS
This might be something that most people do not consider at first; but your new female parts will be actually true female parts (minus the uterus & ovaries). This is because all life on Earth in its earliest development begins as female.
This is why a vulvoplasty can be performed on a biological male; and why men have nipples on their chests and estrogen in their blood.
When a baby develops, the genitals are all the same; a urogenital slit bounded by periurethral folds and more laterally by labioscrotal swellings. It is only when the male chromosome activates, it causes the genitalia to develop differently. However, every masculine part to be traced to a feminine part. Dihydrotestosterone stimulates growth of the urogenital tubercle and induces fusion of the urethral folds and labial fold swelling during this critical period; it also induces differentiation of the prostate and inhibits growth of the vesicle vaginal septum, thereby preventing the development of the vagina
For example, the structure of the penis and clitoris are pretty much the same. It is an organ designed primarily to promote pleasure and reproduction. Both organs contain a nub or head that is packed with nerves.
The skin from the penis is used to form the area around the clitoris called the ‘hood’. Much of the shaft in a male is external, whereas a female contains the majority of her clitoris structure inside her body. Try to imagine anatomically that the inner labia are made of the penis’s ‘stretched’ skin, forming the foreskin at the end.
Scrotal skin contains a suture line down the center that once was the opening to the outer labia. The vaginal pouch is usually obliterated when the müllerian ducts are reabsorbed, although a vestigial blind vaginal pouch known as the prostatic utricle can sometimes be demonstrated. The prostate gland and the urethral glands of Cowper in the male are outgrowths of the urogenital sinus, in which male differentiation is mediated by dihydrotestosterone and requires the presence of androgen receptors
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE PREP / PRE-OP
Both vulvoplasty and vaginoplasty are major surgeries that are usually the last surgeries that MTF individuals have within 2-3 years on HRT.
Be aware of the following:
1) Persistent, well documented gender dysphoria diagnosis.
2) Capacity to make a fully informed decision and to consent for treatment.
3) 12 continuous months of hormone therapy
4) 12 continuous months of living in a gender role that is congruent with their gender identity.
5) Two letters from mental health therapist.
6) Nicotine Free for 10 weeks.
7) Documentation of recent A1C < 6.5% (diabetic patients only)
Pre-Surgery
At OHSU, it is scheduled to have a pre-surgery appointment one month before surgery. At this appointment, you will meet the Physician Assistant and be able to ask any questions before surgery.
You might be tested for nicotine and have blood work. A nicotine test will be performed on the day of surgery.
Stop taking estrogen 4 weeks before surgery. This is to reduce the risk of blood clots. Estrogen can be resumed a week after surgery.
Your surgical team might consist of the following people:
Primary Surgeon
Secondary Surgeon
A PA (physician assistant) Or RN
Medical assistants
Surgery scheduler
Resident physician’s
Physical therapists
Behavioral therapists
Social workers
Inpatient RN & CNA
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SUPPLIES SUGGESTED
Roll fluff gauze: for surgical site absorption. Having 8-10 rolls be best.
Donut pillow or Hemorrihoid pillow for sitting: this will be important as it is almost a 4-hour drive. You can also use a u-shaped neck pillow or gel seat.
Maxi pads: to help with drainage. Larger is better as you don’t want it too tight.
Lots of toilet paper: You are likely to get messy.
Extra pairs of loose or mesh underwear: With dressing and maxi pads, your regular underwear may be too tight. You also may have some drainage that might ruin your underwear.
Stool softeners: Opioid pain medication and inactivity will likely cause some constipation. Miralax is recommended.
Ice pack: To reduce swelling, inflammation and pain.
Peri bottle: For the first few weeks after surgery, you should shower twice daily with gentle soap and water. Use your hand rather than a washcloth to clean the surgical site. Some patients find a peri bottle, designed for postpartem mothers, to be a gentle way to clean the area after surgery, in addition to showering twice daily.
Items to keep you entertained: computer, books, games, ect.
Snacks: to help ease emotional pain and use as a treat.
Items that make you comfortable: like a blanket, pillow, aromatherapy, eye pillow, ect.
Sore throat remedies: tea, chocolate, medicated spray. The trachea tube can leave behind irritation.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE SURGERY
In vulvoplasty, the female genitals are created from the skin and underlying tissue of the penis. No vaginal cavity will be created. In most cases, the testicles are also removed in this operation. Be certain that you have thought about family planning before surgery.
Depending on the technique used, the operation will last anywhere from 2 to 5 hours. The operation will be performed by a plastic surgeon and/or urologist surgeon.
It starts with the insertion of a urinary catheter in the urethra.
The penile skin is removed from the shaft of the penis. The skin is shortened and sutured in order to make it look like a vagina (but without the vaginal cavity).
Then the testicles are removed, and the clitoris and inner labia are made from the glans and the foreskin. The urethra is exposed and shortened up to the new entrance.
The parts of the male genitals that will be incorporated into your new neo-vagina:
Clitoris is made out of the glans of the penis.
The outer labia are made from the scrotum.
The inner labia are made from the skin on the penis and/or urethra.
Urethra shortened and repositioned between the clitoris and vagina.
Introitus (opening of the vagina) is formed from the skin of the penis.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMMEDIATE AFTER SURGERY & DAY 1
In accordance to OHSU Day 1 in Hospital:
After Surgery
Dr. Dy will speak with family after the surgery. Patient will be in post-anesthesia care unit for 2-3 hours for observation. It isn’t uncommon to feel nauseated (I tend to vomit after anesthesia), groggy, irritated, tearful, hungry and especially thirsty for a sore throat.
Patient will then be moved to Unit 4A (surgical unit). You will have a foley catheter in urethra, surgical packing, and drains with a collection bag. Your legs will have compression cuffs and an IV will be placed in the arm.
Medicine offered: nausea med, sore throat med, narcotic pain med, and stool softeners.
Diet: Begin with ice for sore throat. Water can be consumed in PACU. Snacks will be offered, like crackers or pudding, before the regular meal on day 2. Yogurt is advised.
Day 1
There is no strict bed rest, move as much as tolerated.
Rolling over in bed is comfortable if you do a ‘log-roll’. The bed should remain at 45 degrees or less.
Medicine Regiment: 650mg Tylenol every 6hrs. 15mg of Toradol IV every 8hrs. 5-15mg Oxycodone every 4hrs. Miralax.
No bathing, you can sponge bathe.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DAY 2
Medicine Regiment: 650mg Tylenol every 6hrs. 600mg Ibuprofen every 8hrs. 5-15mg Oxycodone every 4hrs. Miralax.
Encouraged to move around as much as possible. This will help with blood clots, maintaining your muscles, and digestion. Physical therapy suggests you do bed exercises every hour while awake.
Many patients will leave the hospital inpatient floor and go home on Day 2 with a catheter and external dressing in place. These dressings will be removed in the clinic on Day 3 or 4.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DAY 3
Medicine Regiment: 650mg Tylenol every 6hrs. 600mg Ibuprofen every 8hrs. 5-15mg Oxycodone every 4hrs. Miralax.
Today, the pressure dressing on the vulva is to be removed. Drains may be taken out today or tomorrow. Foley catheter removed. You need to try to pee without the catheter. 1-5 people find they cannot pee due to swelling, so a catheter will be placed back in. Your bladder will be scanned to see how much urine is left.
Take a shower today. User warm water, not hot! Clean ‘carefully’ all the folds and creases between your legs. Do not scrub! Do not use washcloth here!
Let the water flow over your vulva to wash away soap. Do not rub towel when drying...pat dry if possible.
Prepare for Discharge!
You and the caregivers should ask questions about anything not understood. Caregivers will pick up prescriptions before the patient leaves. Be certain to know the date of the next follow-up visit.
Transfer to the Rood Pavilion for extended stay.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RECOVERY AT ROOD
Not all hospitals offer off-campus housing, so your experience might differ. I live out of state, almost 200 miles away (4-hour commute) from OHSU; so, my care will be transferred there, giving me close access to the surgeon.
Medicine Regiment: 625mg Tylenol every 6hrs (end at first follow-up). 600mg Ibuprofen every 8hrs after taking Tylenol (end at first follow-up). 5mg Oxycodone every 6hrs PRN. 1 Lidocaine patch divided on inner tight and groin for 12hrs. Miralax. Resume your estrogen.
There is no diet restriction, however, drinking plenty of fluids is important with narcotics and flushing out the system. Miralax can be used for up to 1 month for constipation.
Try to keep your walking to 2,000 steps a day, for 4 weeks. Do not lift over 10 pounds for 4 weeks. Take stairs one at a time so you do not open sutures. Ice the mons (fatty tissue over public bone) for 20 minutes every 1-2 hours.
Be certain to rest and recover.
You will want to start using sanitary pads to collect blood from wounds.
Shower twice daily for 6 weeks after surgery. No pool or tub for 3 months! Stitches will dissolve on their own.
Appearance: Lots of swelling and bruising. To quote one trans individual, it will look gross, mutilated, or like a Frankenstein. The swelling can take many months to go down. In 6-12 months, you should start to see your vulva settling into form.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A CAREGIVER’S DUTY
A certain your caregiver knows their task and is comfortable with what is to be expected.
Surgery Day -- On site to talk to medical staff and to answer questions on the patient's behalf. Caregiver can stay in hospital in an extra bed.
Leaving Hospital -- Carry items, pick up medication, and drive.
At Home -- Help with putting you in comfortable position, give water, food, phone and supplies to patient. Observer and assist in showering and moving. This caregiver needs to be available 24 hours a day for about 14 days. This can be in person or on the phone.
The main goal is to have someone if there is an emergency, call doctors, and provide support and wound care.
Wound Care -- Help with cleaning, dressing, and observing surgical sites for 4 days.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOLLOW-UPS
It might differ from different hospitals.
DAY 3-4 -- First Follow-Up: Remove dressing and catheter. Check surgical site and see how PT is doing with pain, urination, and BM.
4 WEEKS -- Second Follow-Up: 15-minute visit to check on health and answer questions.
3-6 MONTHS -- Third Follow-Up: 15-minute visit to check on health and answer questions. They will access the healing.
1 YEAR -- Fourth Follow-Up: 15-minute visit to check on health and answer questions. Last visit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
COMPLICATIONS DURING & AFTER SURGERY
This list is the most common complications seen in GRS patients; however, it does not mean that you will have these complications. It is just best to be aware during your recovery.
Vulvoplasty tends to have less complications as compared to vaginoplasty, but complications can happen depending on your current health.
These complications include:
Bleeding: Bleeding is to be expected after surgery. However, if it does not stop on its own in a few days, a second operation may be necessary to stem the bleeding.
Infection: Although the procedure is done in a clean and sterile way, there is always a chance of bacteria entering the wound. In the period after the operation, there is also a risk of infection. That is why it is so important to take good care of the wound at all times as infection can damage the structure.
Blood suffusion (haematoma): Some blood may accumulate in the surgical area, which may give the area a slightly blue or purple appearance, like a bruise. This will go away by itself after 2 to 4 weeks.
Fluid retention (oedema or seroma): Fluid may also accumulate in the surgical area. If this feels uncomfortable, the fluid can be removed by the physician in a follow-up.
Badly healing wound edges (wound dehiscence): After the operation, the wounds may not heal immediately, and may open up a little. Should this happen, it is recommended that you rinse the wound thoroughly with running water and, if necessary, contact your attending physician.
Hypergranulation: Hypergranulation is a very common problem. It is benign, but does involve a sizeable loss of fluids or blood. It may also have a certain odor and be painful, but it is easy to treat.
Loss of feeling/orgasm: As with any surgery, nerves may be damaged in the operation. Sometimes feeling will not be restored to what they once were. Orgasm can also change after the surgery.
Scarring: The growth in scarring tissue differs per person, skin type and surgical method. People and skin types all heal in their own way. Being overweight or a smoker means that wounds will heal less pretty than in healthy, non-smokers. Sometimes, a scar can be corrected (at least one year after the operation).
Urine spraying: One-third of people in published studies report this complication. Patients often find that it can take more than 6 months before the urine stream is more directed. If you still have bothersome urine spraying after 6 months, it can be often corrected with a second surgery.
Urinary urgency/frequency: This is a feeling of having to pee suddenly and often. This is common soon after surgery because of bladder irritation. This typically resolves on its own.
Urine leakage: This can happen without warning. This usually happens when pressure increases in the abdomen, such as with coughing, laughing or sneezing. This usually gets better on its own as you heal. Pelvic floor physical therapy can help.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
END RESULTS
The final results will not be visible until after six months with the reduction of swelling. Most who have this operation tend to have an immediate negative experience after seeing their neo-vagina just after surgery.
Remember, this operation takes up to 6-12 months to complete the healing process.
The swelling and discoloration will slowly subside. The vagina will form naturally after the operation and will adapt to your body shape. For example, the color of the scrotum and the amount of fatty tissue will determine what the genitals will look like. The end result is different for everyone.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCAR CARE
Massage is suggested to help loosen scar tissue. This can ease the discomfort and make them less visible over time. It is suggested you begin scar massage, advised by PT, 5-8 weeks after surgery. Daily exercise for 5-10 minutes.
Remember! A Massage Isn’t Meant To Hurt! Go gently to desensitized first.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CORRECTIONS
If you are not completely satisfied with the appearance or function of the genitals, you can discuss this with your plastic surgeon or urologist. They will be able to tell you whether an additional operation could lead to improvements.
Some surgeons report that nearly half of their patients will need a second surgery to fix complications or for aesthetics. Some surgeons also tell everyone that two surgeries are always necessary for a final result.
Corrections may, for example, be:
A reduction of the inner labia.
A correction of the clitoral hood.
A correction of the urethra.
In principle, corrections are not performed within 6 months of the first operation. It is advisable to wait at least one year as most issues are due to swelling.
The difficulty with cosmetic corrections is that getting them covered by insurance is difficult without a medical reason.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SEXUALITY
Your sex drive (libido) depends on the hormone testosterone. Most patients recovering from GRS report having a low sex drive for a while, as their testicles have been removed.
However, your sexual life depends not only on genital surgery, but also on many psychological and biological factors; so, do not be discouraged if you cannot reach climax at the time.
It can take upwards of 6-9 months for the nerves to heal after surgery. Nerves will not regrow for around 3-4 weeks after surgery. They will then begin to regrow at 1 millimeter a day or 1 inch a month. It seems that younger people will see the most regrowth. This packed regrowth might make sexuality more intense than before.
However, numbness is also a possibility.
It is natural to feel numb in some areas of the surgical site. With nerves regrowing, it will feel like pins and needles, tingling, and or a quick electric shock. Some find their clitoris desensitized, whereas others find it overly sensitive...it varies.
Becoming familiar with your genitals and learning to use them in a pleasurable way are significant challenges after genital surgery. It is important that you discover what gives you sexual pleasure and that you discuss this with your potential partner/partners
Some people have no desire for penetrative vaginal sex, in which case a vulvoplasty can be a good choice.
After vulvoplasty, you can still have orgasms through the stimulation of the clitoris — just like in the case of vaginoplasty. During a vulvoplasty, your surgeon will construct a clitoris from the glans and, if applicable, the foreskin of the penis.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RESUMING NORMALCY
Walking: 2000 steps (1 mile) a day for first 4 weeks | Afterwards, gradually increase. The more active you are, the more swelling there will be.
Showering: Twice daily for six weeks.
Bathing & Pools: No bathing or swimming for 3 months.
Lifting: Nothing over 10lbs for 4 weeks. | Afterwards, gradually increase.
Exertion: No workouts, running, or strenuous activities for 6 weeks. No biking for 3 months.

Cecily Brown, “Puce Moment”, 1997, Oil on canvas 142.2 x 193cm.
Brown’s works critique and confront the conventional male perspective in portraying the naked feminine figure. Puce Moment is an expansive fusion of numerous, spread-out human forms represented in a vibrant, ecstatic condition. The firm, aggressive red and interlaced, chaotic shapes create an unsettling and uncanny aesthetic. In this work, sexuality is shown as disturbing; instead of appearing sensual due to the great use of paint and glossy finish, it comes across as gut-wrenching and revolting. Thus, Brown questions the customary male gaze in representing the bare feminine body. My work is like Browns, as I always use bold and enchanting red to paint my figure’s face and body, creating an uncanny and curious aesthetic and challenging the traditional image of the child and female body. My work further contributes to investigating the connection between mother, child, and maternal body and how traumas in childhood affect one’s inner self and world.

...Is the FE Fusion challenge still a thing? But yeah, very late to the party but did the thing! The lighting's incredibly wonky but I did have fun with this! Especially since Reyson and Sue's outfits work oddly well together. Seiros apparently found her way in here, too, but that's okay. I just hope I got the Reyson-to-Sue ratio more or less even but I'm still scared I didn't. Still, hope you like it!
I actually had a lot of trouble picking my favorite male FE character. Sue for the female character was a no-brainer contrary to what it may seem it's not for shipping reasons, the ship introduced me to her character, yes, but I genuinely adore her as a character, but I was also considering Ashe, Ferdinand, Mordecai, and others for my favorite male character. In the end I settled on Reyson for max aesthetic. Coincidentally, I think Sue and Reyson would relate with each other quite a bit, seeing as they both value nature a lot and have gone through similar horrors of being helpless to save their people from a brutal surprise onslaught.

⚠️Trigger Warning: Loud noises toward the end, somewhat flashing, blood, themes of anger, violence, and pain⚠️
A video that I made to vent some of my frustration. I don’t know where it comes from, but I think the difficulty of being “just a trauma holder” with no real job other than hovering around being sad and angry is frustrating. Yes, I am a protector. Yes, I am a persecutor. Yes, I can sometimes co-host on a good day. But there is so much pain and rage in me. I wanted to share because I felt like people in the system community would understand, of all people.
“King” section is Aridam, our primary gatekeeper.
“Soldier” section is Valentine, Aridam’s second and our primary protector.
“Poet” section is Dorian, host, as I don’t have enough references of Indigo yet and he said it would be okay to use the photos of what he used to look like before his and Winter’s fusion.
And the “Rage” section is me, Vivian. Trauma holder, persecutor-protector, co-host.
Feels stupid to say enjoy but I worked hard on it so…enjoy, lmao.
🪷Vivi👑
Art credit list below because I only “own” the edited artbreeder portraits at the beginning of the king, solider, poet sections and we try our best to always credit artists when we can figure out who they are. Unfortunately we find a lot of our claims on Pinterest.
“King” Section (Aridam)
-Artbreeder portrait: made and edited by us.
-Male silhouette photograph: can't find the source, all sources just say "dark prince aesthetic" which...okay. lol.
-Green wolf drawing: "Dark creatures in a dark forest" by cercat
-Man with a bloody nose: 먹살 on Twitter, though their account doesn't seem to exist any longer.
-B&W wolf drawing: "Fenrir" which unfortunately, any searches for the source of this photo were futile, and mainly ended up on websites with no credit given. Sad. :(
"Solider" Section (Valentine)
-Artbreeder portrait: made and edited by us.
-Man in white uniform: Apostle on Twitter
-White haired anime style man with flowers: Lin jjx on Twitter
-Silver haired man with a heart in his hand: All attempts to find the source led me to basically Japanese Pinterest. :(
-White haired man playing flute: The only places I could find this image were on RP boards with no credit given, which sucks. :(
"Poet" section (Dorian/Indigo)
-Artbreeder portrait: made and edited by us.
-Regal elf in green: warickaart on Instagram
-pretty man in a top hat with a rose: all attempts to find this source point to a manhwa character called Aisha but I couldn't figure out who the artist is or how to link it.
-boy with a frappe: The Magicians fanart by waxanie on Twitter
-boy with smudged eyeliner (B&W image): the only sources lead to various international Pinterests. I've never seen this happen before so it was kind of funny to see Russian Pinterest, Japanese Pinterest, and Korean Pinterest.
-elf boy with black hair: this source search took me to a super dodgy looking fan art site with more ads than Wiki. Needless to say, couldn't find the source which is so sad.
-boy with ripped off wings: the only freaking place I could even possibly see who this was made by was a fantasy artist called mahdiehseyedi88 on fiverr.
"Rage" section (Vivian)
-boy with sunglasses: Taeyong fan art by hoki11 on Twitter
-Blonde boy laying on the ground photograph: Noen Eubanks
-Scratched up blonde boy photograph: Apparently people like to use this guy for edits for "Song of Achilles" but never like to credit who the model or photographer is. Very cool. (Not)
-Blonde boy upside down drawing: Unfortunately just a lot of reposts with no credit on Pinterest. However, this *looks* like it's from artist valentinaremenar on instagram. Not a guarantee, though the styles are similar. If you know who this belongs to, please lmk.
[Red Section of Rage Section]
Note: all of these photographs are not originally tinted red, this is for the style of the video. So I can't give color descriptions well, but know all photos will be named in order and with a slight description.
First (demon like, glowing eyes): "Cleanse" by Nicolas Cauteruccio on Artstation
Second (boy with sticks in his head and mouth): camouflage by Len-yan on Deviantart
Third (black skin, fiery looking hair, please know this original piece is actually blue and red and it is gorgeous): astrono77153462 on Tumblr
Fourth (boy on a bed of white roses): "doodle" by Alle Page on Artstation
Fifth (bloody looking faerie creature) Once again astrono77153462 on Tumblr
Sixth (boy with long hair, cracks, and metallic blood, please know that this original piece is white and gold and gorgeous, colors were shifted for the video aesthetic and I highly suggest checking out the OG piece): "you'll never break me" by shilin on Deviantart
Seventh (satyr with whipping marks): daifei on Tumblr
Eighth (boy with claws dripping blood): I could not find proper credit anywhere. Ugh. So sad because this art is so gorgeous.
And of course, if anyone knows any of the uncredited pieces, please feel free to DM me and I can edit the post for proper credit. Thank you.

Authentic Style: Men's Guayabera Shirts Decoded
In the ever-evolving world of mens guayabera fashion, few garments have stood the test of time quite like the guayabera shirt. Originating from the Caribbean region, this iconic piece has transcended its humble beginnings to become a global symbol of effortless elegance and cultural heritage. As the warm weather approaches, the allure of the guayabera shirt grows stronger, captivating the senses and inspiring a deeper appreciation for its rich history and enduring appeal.
The Origins of the Guayabera Shirt
The guayabera shirt's roots can be traced back to the 19th century, where it first emerged as a practical garment worn by farmers and laborers in the tropical regions of Cuba, Mexico, and other parts of Latin America. The shirt's distinctive features, including its four pockets and pleated design, were not merely aesthetic choices but served functional purposes. The pockets provided convenient storage for essential tools, while the pleats allowed for greater airflow and comfort in the sweltering heat
Over time, the guayabera shirt evolved from a utilitarian workwear item to a symbol of status and sophistication. As it gained popularity among the urban elite, the shirt's design underwent a subtle transformation, incorporating finer fabrics and more intricate embroidery or detailing. This evolution not only elevated the garment's aesthetic appeal but also solidified its place as a sartorial statement in the cultural fabric of the region.
The Timeless Appeal of the Guayabera Shirt
The enduring appeal of the guayabera shirt lies in its ability to seamlessly blend function and fashion. In an era where comfort and versatility are increasingly sought after, the guayabera offers a refreshing alternative to the traditional button-down or polo shirt. Its loose, flowing silhouette and breathable materials make it an ideal choice for warm-weather occasions, whether it's a casual summer gathering or a formal event.
Beyond its practical advantages, the guayabera shirt also carries a deep cultural significance. Across the Caribbean and Latin America, it has become an emblem of national pride and heritage, with each region often boasting its own distinct variations in terms of fabric, embroidery, and overall aesthetic. This cultural connection adds a layer of authenticity and personal expression to the wearer's style, allowing them to showcase their cultural roots and affiliations.
Embracing the Guayabera Shirt in Modern Menswear
As the guayabera shirt gains global recognition, menswear designers and fashion enthusiasts have embraced its timeless allure and sought to reinterpret it for the contemporary man. While staying true to the shirt's traditional design elements, these modern interpretations often experiment with innovative materials, silhouettes, and styling techniques.
One such example is the incorporation of the guayabera shirt into the realm of high-fashion menswear. Luxury brands have recognized the shirt's potential to add a touch of laid-back elegance to their collections, pairing it with tailored trousers or suits to create a harmonious fusion of formality and informality. This cross-pollination of styles has helped to elevate the guayabera shirt's status, positioning it as a versatile and sophisticated option for the discerning male consumer.
Embracing the Guayabera Shirt in Everyday Wear
Beyond its high-fashion adaptations, the guayabera shirt has also found a place in the everyday wardrobes of men around the world. Its relaxed silhouette and comfortable fit make it an excellent choice for a variety of casual occasions, from backyard barbecues to weekend getaways. By pairing the guayabera with well-fitting jeans, chinos, or even shorts, men can create effortlessly cool outfits that exude a sense of laid-back elegance.
The guayabera shirt's versatility also extends to formal settings, where it can be dressed up with the addition of tailored trousers or a suit jacket. This adaptability allows men to seamlessly transition from day to night, making the guayabera a reliable and versatile choice for their sartorial needs.
Choosing the Right Guayabera Shirt
As with any garment, the key to achieving the perfect guayabera shirt look lies in selecting the right fit and style to complement one's individual body type and personal style. When shopping for a guayabera shirt, it's essential to consider factors such as fabric, sleeve length, and the number and placement of pockets.
For a classic, traditional look, opt for a guayabera shirt made from lightweight, breathable fabrics like linen or cotton. These materials not only provide comfort in warm weather but also lend an air of casual sophistication to the overall ensemble. When it comes to sleeve length, short-sleeved guayabera shirts offer a more casual vibe, while long-sleeved versions can be dressed up for more formal occasions.
The number and placement of pockets on the guayabera shirt can also vary, with some designs featuring two pockets and others incorporating four. While the traditional four-pocket style is often associated with the shirt's origins, personal preference and the desired level of formality can guide the choice between these options.
Caring for Your Guayabera Shirt
Proper care and maintenance are essential to ensuring the longevity and pristine appearance of your guayabera shirt. When laundering the garment, it's recommended to use a gentle, mild detergent and avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, which can compromise the fabric's integrity and color. For best results, consider hand-washing or using a delicate cycle in the washing machine, and air-drying the shirt to preserve its shape and avoid potential shrinkage
In terms of ironing, the guayabera shirt's signature pleated design requires a delicate touch. Use a low-to-medium heat setting and focus on pressing the pleats to maintain the shirt's crisp, tailored appearance. Avoid over-ironing, as this can cause the fabric to become overly stiff and lose its natural drape.
Conclusion
The guayabera shirt's enduring appeal is a testament to its enduring style and cultural significance. From its humble agricultural origins to its modern-day status as a sartorial statement, this iconic garment has captivated the hearts and wardrobes of men around the world. By embracing the guayabera's timeless elegance and versatility, men can elevate their warm-weather wardrobes and showcase their appreciation for the rich tapestry of cultural heritage that this remarkable shirt represents.

Week 7: Aesthetic Labor
Prosumers
The emergence of the prosumer concept facilitated by digital technologies has led to the fusion of consumption and production (Dujarier, 2014), evident in the widespread proliferation of user-generated content online (Bonsu & Darmody, 2008).
This phenomenon raises inquiries into the intersection between prosumption and sexualized labor, particularly on platforms like Instagram, where the monetization of prosumer labor heavily hinges on capturing attention in the "attention economy" (Davenport & Beck, 2001). Notably, predominantly women influencers shape cultural norms and endorse products on Instagram without commensurate compensation, often conforming to heteronormative standards of attractiveness and femininity, thereby presenting highly sexualized self-representations. This trend aligns with the phenomenon termed "porn chic," where elements of commercial pornography permeate mainstream culture, influencing perceptions of female desirability (Tyler & Quek, 2016).
The convergence of pornographic imagery with non-pornographic media, facilitated by digital technologies, further contributes to this trend (Attwood, 2011). Additionally, within contemporary digital culture, the act of taking selfies is often interpreted as a manifestation of sexualized labor, with women frequently presenting themselves online in highly sexualized ways to adhere to conventional beauty ideals (Carrotte, Prichard & Lim, 2017). Termed "pornification", this phenomenon involves the portrayal of a heteronormative display of sexuality or a 'porn chic' aesthetic, predominantly targeted towards a male audience. Fontenelle (2015) suggests that the prosumption reinforces existing power dynamics by perpetuating heteronormative advertising models, with female influencers positioning themselves as objects alongside the products they endorse, emphasizing bodily curves and other enhanced features associated with femininity. Many successful Instagram brands adopt aspects of the pornification template, emphasizing enhanced features and exaggerated femininity, including accentuated lips, jawline, cheeks, waist, and buttocks.
Sexualized labor
Sexualized labor, defined as work associated with sexuality, sexual desire, and pleasure (Spiess & Waring, 2005), emerged from the need to understand how employee corporeality and sexualization impact emotional and aesthetic labor. Two main conceptualizations of sexualized labor are drawn upon: the “conceptual double shift” (Waehurst & Nickson, 2009, p. 385), transitioning from sanctioned to strategically prescribed employee sexuality, and the process linking work with sexual pleasure. Emotion, aesthetics, and sexualization underpin the performance of sexualized labor, where emotional labor involves managing feelings for wage exchange (Hochschild, 1983, p. 7), and aesthetic labor incorporates workers' embodied capacities to evoke affect in customers (Entwistle & Wissinger, 2006). The notion of sexualization remains ambiguous, encompassing sexual appeal and employee-driven sexualization. Distinguishing between sexualization and healthy sexuality is crucial, as sexualization often involves objectification and degradation, creating tensions in understanding the term 'sexualized' in the context of labor (Drenten, Gurrieri & Tyler, 2019, p. 45). Hopefuls, aspiring influencers on social media, perform sexualized labor without monetary compensation, seeking brand affiliation and follower attention. They adopt a consistent 'porn chic' aesthetic (Hall & Bishop, 2007), emphasizing body-highlighting poses and upbeat captions, contributing to the digital economy unrecognized.
Boasters participate in sexualized labor without receiving direct monetary compensation, relying on informal brand connections for credibility (Drenten, Gurrieri & Tyler, 2019, pp. 52-53). They showcase products in their content, skillfully managing heightened visibility and potential harassment. Boasters frequently receive branded freebies, product trials, and coupon codes, all aimed at promoting external brands but lacking in substantial monetary compensation for the influencer.
Engagers, formally affiliated with external brands, perform sexualized labor for monetary compensation, endorsing products through staged, professionally captured images (Turley & Moore, 1995).
Boosters market their own products using porn-chic aesthetics, engaging in ongoing conversations with followers while driving traffic to external e-commerce platforms (Rich, 1980).
Performers monetize their online presence by offering access to themselves as commodities, redirecting followers to external platforms for personalized interactions for a fee, despite challenges in controlling and protecting their digital content (Drenten, Gurrieri & Tyler, 2019, pp. 58-60).
“Body heat” on social media
The concept of "body heat" on social media encompasses both conforming to visual standards of "hetero-sexy" through body production and using an attractive body to influence others (Dobson, 2015). Social media platforms rely on users' curation of "hot" body images to regulate attention flows, especially leveraging hot female bodies in promoting nightlife events. User interactions generate data that informs algorithmic procedures, which learn to prioritize hot female body images due to their profitability. Consequently, naturalized assumptions about gendered desire become embedded in social media platforms' procedural choices.
Scholarly attention to girls' and young women's online identities exceeds that of young men's, with research focusing on their identity constructions and self-branding (Brandes & Levin, 2013). The internet, perceived as a space for challenging normative feminine identities, offers opportunities for empowerment but also involves navigating complex processes of digital identity production (Banet-Weiser, 2012). Social media platforms reflect a political economy of gendered visual images, privileging certain bodies capable of generating affective engagement and profit, while algorithmic media platforms reinforce conventional standards of attractiveness (Carah & Dobson, 2016, p. 3). Promo work in nightlife involves extensive reconnaissance practices focused on registering attention and affect generated by attractive bodies on social media, reflecting vernacular theories of the "male gaze" (Mulvey, 1989) and highlighting how platforms mobilize bodies for attention and affective exchange. "Hotness" operates as both gendered visual characteristics and an ability to influence others, shaping online and offline interactions (Carah & Dobson, 2016, p. 7). Female bodies take center stage in algorithmic media platforms, perpetuating gendered encounters influenced by an assumed male gaze but also offering possibilities for social shifts. Analyzing the interplay between media platforms, branding, and gendered experiences illuminates how gender is reproduced in algorithmic media cultures.
Case Study: Kim Kardashian's Instagram posts
Kim Kardashian's rise to fame, despite lacking a discernible talent, has led to her being revered, particularly among teenage girls, for her entertaining persona (Setiawan, 2020, p. 1).
This portrayal of success prompts viewers to aspire to emulate internet celebrities, who often dictate idealized appearances and body images, further normalizing societal norms through Kardashian's influential social media presence (Juntiwasarakij, 2018, p. 555). This process aligns with the concept of media equation, where viewers respond to communication media as if they were real social actors, solidifying the influence of internet celebrities. However, the portrayal of women, especially through sexually appealing images on social media, can result in both empowerment and exploitation, perpetuating the concept of sexualization, where women are solely evaluated based on their sexual appeal (Liss, Erchull & Ramsey, 2010, p. 65). This representation risks dehumanizing women by reducing them to mere sexual objects, reinforcing self-objectification and emphasizing sexual appeal over their intrinsic value as individuals (Rudman & Hagiwara, 1992, p. 87). Kim Kardashian's Instagram posts frequently feature her wearing revealing clothing, emphasizing her sexuality and allure (Amin, 2015, p. 47). This portrayal, coupled with seductive poses, gestures, and strategically chosen attire such as bodysuits and skirts, accentuates specific body parts like breasts, waist, hips, and buttocks, contributing to her sexualized image (Setiawan, 2020).
Kardashian's promotion of her products through this sexualized persona capitalizes on the effectiveness of sex appeal in advertising, particularly in capturing viewer attention (Poorani, 2012, p. 10).
By embodying societal beauty ideals and normative standards of sexuality, Kardashian reinforces her position as a trendsetter and influencer, shaping viewers' perceptions of attractiveness (Overstreet, Quinn & Agocha, 2010, p. 91). This normalization of her sexually stimulating image is facilitated by Kardashian's control and monitoring of her body, including cosmetic surgeries and rigorous fitness regimens, positioning her as both a subject and object in the capitalist system. Viewers, especially female ones, internalize these standards, aspiring to emulate Kardashian's seductive persona, while male viewers respond favorably to the sexual appeal portrayed (Setiawan, 2018, p. 17). However, Kardashian's hyperreal portrayal blurs the lines between reality and constructed beauty ideals, challenging viewers' perceptions of authenticity and reinforcing unattainable standards of beauty (Baudrillard, 1994, p. 11). In short, Kim Kardashian's Instagram posts demonstrate how she conforms to societal norms and the capitalist system by regulating her body and sexuality (Kress & Leeuwen, 2006). Through revealing clothing, cosmetic procedures, and suggestive imagery, Kardashian strives to maintain an idealized appearance for her audience. This commodifies her body and sexuality, reducing her to a sexual object for profit. However, her Instagram portrayal is a distorted simulation, detached from reality (Baudrillard, 1994).
