Omgg could you write about nikolai lanstov and how he has known reader his whole life and they are together but not oficially and then alina comes and yk what happens and reader thought that they could handle it because it's a political marriage but then they end things and then nikolai one night can't take it anymore and so he goes to her room and begs her, quite literally on his knees to get back together, and maybe end it with some smut or fluff however you feel like doing but I just need him begging 😭
a/n: Crap! I really liked the idea of your request, so I thought about it and decided to make some changes. First, I thought about it and decided that I would most likely make a mini-series (big story) of several parts. Secondly, I realized that it is easier for me to fulfill your request with an !Original Character! not marked "reader" or "Y/N" And thirdly, of course, I had to change some details of the canon in order to somehow structurally introduce the hero into the story. Hope you enjoy what I do! let me know if you like it?(!)
warnings: Language, Squaller!OC (idk)
pairing: Nikolai Lantsov x OC!Dasha Romanov
summary: There is clearly an understatement between Nikolai and his childhood friend. But who knew that things could get even worse when the sun shines on the horizon?
gold and silver
prologue.
Tumblr media
I knew Nikolai, without exaggeration, all my conscious life. We met when we were just children, when I was brought to serve in the palace (sensible squaller are needed everywhere, especially when the queen wants the sun on a cloudy day). He was the most restless boy I have ever seen in my whole life: he caused trouble for his whole family, nannies and tutors, but he was a fun guy, with an adventurous spirit and a good heart. Therefore, the fact that we found a common language did not take long. We would run away from classes together, I would show him tricks with the wind and clouds, and he would teach me how to shoot and even show me a couple of tricks so that I could protect myself with more than just my abilities.
And then the service began. His and mine. Nikolai and Dominic signed up for the First Army, while I was accepted into the Second Army, where my hard and fun life began. At first, Nikolai and I kept in touch, tried to keep in touch, but time passed, everything changed, we grew up and over the course of our destinies we changed a lot. Our communication slowly faded away. Of course, I heard rumors about what happened to the prince, and I'm sure he also heard rumors about me. I have long lost the habit of having Lantsov around, but still my heart ached every time I heard the news about him.
But in one moment everything changed. More time passed when Nikolai himself found me. True, now he was no longer Nikolai, but asked everyone to call himself Sturmhond. He was a privateer, with his own ship and crew, and kindly invited me to join the crew of the "Hummingbird".
How long did I think? Yes. It would be strange to immediately agree to such an adventurous proposal from someone whom I had not seen for several years. But Saints!
No matter how many years, centuries, centuries have passed; no matter what happens to me, I will always continue to adore Nikolai.
He still managed to convince me to join his crew. And I climbed the "Hummingbird", starting a new page in my life, but again next to Nikolai.

Tumblr media
Oh my God, what did I get myself into? you kept thinking over and over again, sitting inside Kaz's office, staring blankly at the papers on the desk.
No matter what or how hard you tried, you couldn't get ride of Alexei's dead body out of your mind.
"You've been quiet."
You blinked when Kaz's voice made you snap from your thoughts. You glanced at him as he walked around the desk. He picked his pocket watch to see the time and he glanced at you.
"I will take it that this was the first time you saw someone die in front of your very eyes."
You didn't say anything and turned back to look at the papers on the desk.
He didn't deserve it, you thought.
"I'm sure it won't be the last time," he said, and you tensed up. The door opened and you glanced over to see Inej walking into the living room. She walked into the office room and looked from you to Kaz, giving him a look, "What was that?"
"Be more specific," he told her without looking up from the papers.
"It was one thing when we had a week to find a way across the Fold. But sunrise? We have to say no."
"No."
"So 'no' to the job?" Inej asked.
Kaz glanced at her, "That's a 'no' to saying 'no'."
"We can't go!" she shouted.
Kaz glared at her, "Can't we?" he snapped and you frowned as you looked between them.
Then, Inej pulled up her sleeve to show the tattoo on her wrist, "I can't go."
"What's the meaning of this tattoo?" you suddenly asked.
Inej lowered her gaze to look at you, her expression turned softer than it was when she spoke to Kaz. She swallowed before speaking softly, "Before I met Kaz, I was at the Menagerie... all the girls there have a tattoo like this."
Your gaze soften and she continued, "I can't leave without Heleen's permission."
"But, you're here. Not there," you said softly.
"Kaz didn't got me out yet. I still belong to her."
You frowned at that and you looked at Kaz. "She is coming, right?" you asked.
He glanced at you and then away, "I have a plan."
"What is it?" you asked after a moment of silent. Kaz clenched his jaw and looked between you and Inej.
"We both know by now when you're still figuring things out," Inej said, "You don't know how to pull off this job."
"I still have six hours, and right now, neither of you are helping," he said.
You could feel the rage in Inej when she spoke, "Maybe you crack a way across, but that doesn't solve this problem, does it?!" She thrust her wrist forth, forcing Kaz to stare at the branding on her skin.
"If I can't crack this, no one's going."
"And if you do?" Inej asked.
"Then maybe you stay here!"
You stared at Kaz in surprise and shock after he spoke those words. Inej looked at him for a long moment before speaking, "Maybe I won't be here when you get back."
"Inej," you said softly as she walked out. You stood up and walked after her but she was gone.
You quickly turned to Kaz, "What the hell is wrong with you?" you asked.
"I have no time to this," he snapped.
"Well, make time!" you snapped back, "Alright? This is Inej! You can't just take me and Jesper with you, and leave her behind."
"Y/n--"
"I won't go without her," you cut in, and he stared at you with his jaw clenching. "If she stays, so am I."
"Really?" he asked as he raised an eyebrow as a challenge, "You will give up on a chance to find out more about yourself across the Fold? Your powers? Your family? Money? All for Inej?"
Your expression darkened and now you glared at him. "Yes," you said.
He opened his mouth but you cut in, "If you want to go so badly, take Jesper and go. Because I won't leave Inej alone here." You thought back when you first came here, all alone and scared out of your mind, Inej was the one who helped you.
"I'm not turning my back on her."
She backed you up without really knowing you.
And now that the two of you got to know each other, things were different.
To you, Inej was family.
You glared at Kaz, "I'm not turning my back on her," you said the same words she said to Kaz about you.
He opened his mouth but you turned around and walked out the office. "Y/n," he called after you but you didn't stop and walked out through the opened window.
You climbed up on the roof and saw Inej sitting there. You let out a relief sigh and walked closer carefully. "I was afraid you have disappeared," you said as you sat beside her.
She didn't say anything for a long moment and stared off into the distance before speaking softly, "Did you mean it?"
"What?" you asked.
"About not going if I won't," she said softly and looked at you.
You gave her a small smile and nodded, "Yeah. If you're staying here, I will too."
"Why would you do that?" she asked.
"Because, you're family," you admitted, giving a small shrug and she stared at you in complete surprise. "At least to me."
Her eyes were glassy but she blinked quickly. She nodded lightly and slowly. "You too," she said softly.
You smiled softly as she took your hand.
--
Time went by as you and Inej continued to sit on top of the roof, enjoying each other's company.
"Do you have memories of your real family?" you asked softly.
Inej thought for a moment and suddenly a small smile slip on her lips. "A little. My parents. My little brother. The happy times..." She looked at you. "You? Do you have any memories?"
You frowned and shook your head. "No. Nothing," you said quietly and her smile disappeared. "All my memories are from the orphanage... and none of them really were happy memories. I remember the fear more than anything. The fear of..."
Your voice trailed off and you looked up at the dark sky, not finishing. "Fear of what?" she asked quietly.
Been in that damn closet, you thought bitterly. You felt Inej giving your hand a soft squeeze and you took a deep breath. You let it out softly before you spoke up, "Since I was little, the sisters would locked me up in the small closet in the basement... I've develop claustrophobia to small spaces..." You looked at her. "Only you and Kaz know about this. I don't like talking about it."
Inej nodded understandably, "I understand. When we were led to Dreesen's basement... that was why you froze, isn't it?"
"I didn't mean to, it just... happened," you admitted. "Seen it the door open and leading to a basement... just instantly made me remember the basement at the orphanage..."
"You're not there anymore," Inej said softly and gave your hand another squeeze. "You're safe now. None of them can hurt you anymore."
You gave her a small sad smile, she was right, they can't hurt me anymore... but the damage was already been done.

Shadow & Bone has been one of my favorite shows to write about. It gave me interesting characters, this sense of greater creative freedom than I've ever been offered, and this beautiful way to discuss the importance of hope and love in the face of pain and despair. It has also brought many readers to work that have shown the same level of passion and care that I hold for it. I haven't been writing for this show for a very long time, yet it feels like it has always been there. Something that was always going to happen; I just had to wait for it all to click into place. I will forever be grateful for that feeling. That sense of purpose.
I have no intention of just letting this show go after two seasons. I promise.
I will continue to write about it. My OC will continue. I plan to extend that story beyond the bounds that we have been allowed to see on screen. I also have plans to start a new series exploring another facet of the show's universe that I have not been able to explore yet.
It is sad to see the show go, but that does not mean the story ends or the characters stop. We, as fans, can keep these stories going for as long as we want them to.
I'll see you all soon.
no mourners, no funerals

CHAPTER 2
LILITH
Inej's silent footsteps brought her back to reality, the rooftops of the city stretched out beneath their feet, their legs dangled over the apex of the roof, their eyes studied the streets and the movements beneath them, "You know he won't take you with him if that cut doesn't heal. " The Suli said without shifting her gaze from the streets, "It's lucky it's already healed then." the brown haired one replied, pulling her sleeve over her palm, Inej's gaze stopped on the younger girl beside her, a mixture of concern and pride expressed in the brown irises, "Be careful." she said before disappearing behind Lilith.
The rhythmic clatter of his cane echoed on the roof tiles, a rhythm now known, familiar, "I have a job for you." Exclaimed the boy's impassive, hoarse voice, "What business?" "A banquet will be held for the Council Members, you will infiltrate with the actors of the Komedie Brute along with Specht." "Who is the target?" "Jellen Radmakker."
The second floor of the Geldrennen Hotel had been reserved by the Council Members, five of the richest men in Ketterdam, interested only in their image, their place in the city's food chain, protected by more guards than anyone could count, accustomed to wealth, luxury, security, indifferent to the city's needs, concerned only with dressing well, with showing the rest of the city how rich they were, oblivious to how many teenagers and children had lost their innocence by becoming criminals because of them, because none of them deigned to help the citizens, too worried about losing their investment in Jurda's production.
The girl pulled her veil over her face, the costume of the Lost Bride allowed her to hide, to camouflage herself among the actors, no one seemed to notice the few extra actors, but that was her speciality, hiding in the shadows even when the shadows were not there. Lilith noticed Specht's gaze on her, although older than her she knew he had to answer to the girl's orders, all the members of the Crows knew they had to answer to her orders; her reputation, her name, her history, the legends about her past and her family made her more dangerous and important than anyone thought.
The girl's brown eyes studied the room, Jellen Radmakker was sitting at the table, two armed men were staring at him ready to defend him; to his right was Nathan Boreg dressed in grey, his gaze passed from his colleagues to the guards to the actors, the man's breathing was quickened, although he tried to hide it you could see the drops of sweat forming on his forehead; Karl Dryden sat opposite Radmakker, his gaze fixed on the roast quail on the table in front of him, his mouth open, waiting to dig into the dish; to his left Jan Van Eck resided with a look of superiority and disgust towards the rest of the diners, his purple velvet suit fell perfectly over his body, his gold ring shone on his left ring finger under the dim light of the candles, four guards behind him scanned the room for threats; at the head of the table the figure of Hoede resided boredly waiting for entertainment and wine. "I have had news of the arrival of a more than prosperous merchant cargo." Broke the silence Radmakker, "A durast, a healer, a squaller and three other unspecified Grisha." "When will they arrive?" "By the end of the month. I understand they will be sold on the third port when they arrive. No one has been informed of their arrival yet so we will have exclusive rights to them." "I want the names and any information you have on them by tomorrow night." The three merchants exchanged information for the duration of the dinner, information they were not supposed to exchange in public. Their plans were unknown to the girl but the mere knowledge that other kids would be sold to the highest bidder made her blood boil, she adjusted the gloves on her hands, the veil on her face and the wreath on her forehead before shifting her gaze from the merchants' table to Specht, the man was listening to the conversations of the guards, focus on finding something to tell his boss.
The streets of Ketterdam were illuminated by oil lamps and animated by tourists and locals, the Pleasure District, known as the Barrel, was floodlit despite the fact that the sun had been down for several hours, the men and women working in the various bars attracted customers with false claims, false promises, false truths necessary to survive in this place; the tourists looked around, too focused on the bars, the scenes and promises of an unforgettable time to notice the disappearance of watches, wallets, valuables and other items; blonde hair blocked Lilith's view, the voices around the girl seemed to suddenly disappear the moment she felt the pressure of a hand approaching her side, her left hand clasped on the blonde's wrist, the dagger clutched in her right hand stopped at the thief's side, two pitch black eyes locked into Lilith's brown ones, her blonde eyebrows furrowed in shame and disappointment, a half smile formed on Lilith's face before the girl released her grip on the blonde, "You need to relax your breath and your arm, the pressure of the hand near the pocket would have brought you a lot of trouble." Explained Lilith to the blonde, "Check the other dagger." Said the thief with a proud grin, Lilith's hand moved to the dagger hidden in her boot, pulling it out before releasing her grip on the accomplice's wrist, "You must conceal your footsteps, though the noise in these streets is impossible to muffle, your footsteps echo like a pin on marble." The two kids nodded at the brunette before turning on their heels, "Shouldn't you be checking the tables at the Club?" shouted Lilith before turning the corner towards the Slat.
It happened before she could even notice, two men grabbed her arms while a third stopped in front of her, the man's face inches from hers, the smell of alcohol and smoke invaded her nostrils, the three drunk and out of it men stared at her with hungry stares, a look she knew all too well, a look she had seen all too many times at Emerald Palace, the dagger slipped from her sleeve into her hand before making contact with the arm of one of the three men, the man's blood stained the girl's glove, the wreath slipped from her forehead, breaking on impact with the cubblestone beneath her, the dagger in her left hand ready to be used on the second man, eyes fixed on the enemy, her right hand ready to move if necessary but before she could do anything else the smell of gunpowder invaded her nostrils, the man in front of her groaned before falling to the ground in pain, a pool of blood began to spread beneath his body; before the girl could recognise the shooter she felt a burning sensation between her ribs, her hand clutched her side, crimson red began to cover her hand, she managed to pull the dagger from her boot in time to find a new home in the man's sternum before everything went black.
Her body lay motionless in Jesper's arms, blood oozed from her side, the cut on her right forearm had reopened during the confrontation, her closed eyes and almost non-existent breathing forced Jesper to run through the streets, making space for himself by shouting and pushing tourists and workers, Big Bolliger noticed Lilith unconscious in his arms before he even noticed Jesper shouting and trying to get into the Crows Club, the line of people waiting to enter protested at the sight of the scene, "I've been here for three hours." "I've been waiting my turn since before the sun went down," were some of the comments Jesper could hear before turning towards the Pigeons, "And she’s dying. If you want I'll shoot you too so you can come in," the boy replied before entering the club. Inej was the first to notice Jesper, she stood beside him studying the girl's wounds, her gaze and expression impassive, used by now to such scenes, "Take her to her room, I'll go get Kaz." "No.... Don’t.... Call him..." said Lilith between sighs, before losing consciousness again. Jesper and Inej knew not to go against the girl's wishes, but they needed Kaz to heal her, he was the only one who could find a healer and hire them before the worst happened, "Lil, we have to, he's the only one who can help you." Jesper's voice was gentle and concerned, "Milana... Work... At the Orchid..." Lilith's laboured breathing grew quicker and more erratic as Jesper laid her down on the mattress.

chapter 1
Summary: Does past define someone, or perhaps what they were born as? Everyone looked at Alina Starkov as if she was the answer to all their questions. But Alina felt that Kyra Kozlov was the answer to all her problems. Kyra was a mystery, a powerful Grisha, and somehow she started to be the sun summoner's home too.
Tumblr media
Kyra always heard whispers but for once they weren't about her presence;  the grisha had found a new topic to talk about; the hallways were flooded with talks of a summoner who could call the sun.
Kyra yet hadn't met the summoner, but felt pity for the girl knowing how pestering grisha can be if they wanted to be. Maybe that's why she opted to serve at the country's borders away from the little palace.
She had arrived at the little palace only days before the sun summoner; and though it had been only two weeks she already wanted to leave the little palace. She wasn't close with many grisha and the ones she knew were either in the front lines or in the darkling's inner circle. She kept her distance from the latter, having enough of political matters.
Usually she would be by the lake, teaching and supervising the training tidemakers or in her room sitting at her desk with piles of paper. Yes, she had declared she hated political matters but being a grisha of her rank, she had no choice but to manage the issues in the borders. Hey, at least they were far better than the atrocious things the king's advisers suggest the general.
A book was open in her lap, the words glaring at her for her attention but her focus was on touching the edges of the book lost deep in thought. She had been sitting like that for a long time since she had wandered the halls and settled in the library after dinner. The footfalls of someone and a soft hushed voice got her to glance up from the book. Turning to look she figured it was someone behind the bookshelf possibly searching for a book.
Indulging into the book again she failed to sooth the glare the words had set upon her; she got up to leave placing the book on the bookshelf where it belongs. Rounding the corner of the bookshelf she spotted the person she heard before, it was a girl and by the colour of her kefta she was an etherealki.
The girl muttered something under her breath when she couldn't reach the book on the shelf, pulling her hands down she moved away from the shelf not yet noticing Kyra standing. When the girl disappeared from Kyra's sight she moved towards the book the etherealki was  trying to reach and grabbed it with much ease spying at the cover; it was a book about ravkan folklore. Hearing a thud Kyra saw the girl again now with a stool by her feet a defeated look on her face. It took a moment for Kyra to realise what the girl must have thought, she took her book.
Kyra smiled stepping towards the girl extending the book towards her. The girl eyed it for a moment a took it, giving a slight nod.
"Ravkan folklore?" Kyra offered to the girl who looked increasingly uncomfortable. really? ravkan folklore?
"Something wrong with it?" Dark brown eyes stared up at her. Kyra now took notice of the embroidery in the girl's kefta- Saints, this was the sun summoner.
"No, there's nothing wrong with it. It is good book, a lot of illustrations;" pointing towards the book, " A lot of hidden meaning are expressed beautifully in the illustrations."
The girl hummed, she looked pretty relaxed now but there was a bit of stiffness in her shoulders as if she were alert for some danger. Kyra lifted her hands, as if in surrender "Relax, I'm not going to bite you;" her words ending with a chuckle, "I'm Kyra Kozlov, if you're up for introductions?" Kyra offered her hand forward.
"Alina Starkov" the girl accepted Kyra's hand, a truce of sorts to whatever was going on. Alina shrugged her shoulders, "I-I just didn't realise anyone was in the library other then me" She slightly tilted her head, smiling.
"Well I apologise then, I didn't expect anyone to be in the library at this hour either; grisha usually don't linger by the library after dinner" Kyra moved away from Alina reaching for another book on the shelf. "This one, Miss Starkov;"  She tapped at the worn cover, "Is also really good. Similar genre"
Alina reached forward, running her fingers over the cover. "Thanks Miss Kozlov, I sure will read it" looking up at Kyra, she gently took the book from her hands. "It's alright, and Kyra is enough" Kyra's eyes followed her hands watching the gold threads by her kefta's reflect the soft light.
"Only if you call me Alina, Kyra" she shifted her arms positioning the two books more comfortable, raising her eyebrow
"Then as you wish, Alina" Kyra whispered leaning against the shelf, drawling her name.
Alina felt heat creeping up her neck at that, huffing a small laugh,"I- better get going. Good night Kyra" Alina muttered, nodding towards the library doors and kind of hurrying towards it.
"Sweet dreams then!" Kyra called after the girl. Well she met the sun summoner. Kyra's eyes moved to the window, it wasn't that late and she nothing to do. Why not have an early night as well?

I am going to lose it if the writers of the series are going to make the Darkling lose his mind for no reason aka last season Daenerys. He's the villan. Everybody gets that. I see no need in adding even more abusive characteristics to him or to bastardise the original needlessly. The book version does more than enough.
Part of the Darkling's charm is that despite him being the "bad guy", he is still likeable and at rare times relatable. Which, in my opinion, serves to prove the point of him being a manipulative predator even more than any outward expression of the fact (physical violence for example).

“I can give you the chance to change Ravka,” said Nikolai. He was starting to become irritated at the sun summoner’s defiance. He’d known Alina for weeks now and yet it seemed as though she was immune to his charm and his charm was what he relied on. Nikolai assumed it had something to do with a certain otkazat’sya.
“I can give you the chance to bring your people hope,” He tried appealing to her loyalty to the grisha.
“Oh is that all?” Alina said sarcastically. “And just how am I supposed to do that?”
Nikolai inhaled. This was going to get him killed.
“By helping me unite the first and second armies. By becoming my queen.”
Before Nikolai could even let out the breath he’d been holding, Mal stormed towards him, grabbing the lapels of his jacket and shoving him into the wall. Despite his initial instinct to fight back, Nikolai did not. He understood the love Mal had for Alina and what he’d just suggested would make their relationship difficult to manage.
“Easy now, mustn’t get blood on the uniform, let me explain -”
“Try explaining with my fist in your mouth” Mal snarled.
Nikolai twisted and in a flash he’d slipped from Mal’s grip. A knife was in his hand, pulled from the strap in his sleeve.
“Step back Oretsev. I’m keeping my temper for her sake, but I’d just as soon gut you like a carp.”
“Try it,” Mal spat.
Sudden movement pulled his attention to the shadowed entrance of the tent. Where Inessa was standing.
Inessa. Shit.
Nikolai had sent for Inessa, a fact which he had completely forgotten in the midst of the chaos that was Mal and Alina’s unspoken love story. How long had she been standing there? What did she hear?
He couldn’t linger too long, there were more pressing issues to deal with.
“Ah, Inessa. Good.” Nikolai clapped his hands, turning to Mal and Alina.
“I would like to formally introduce the two of you to Inessa Mor-”
“We’ve met already. Briefly. On the Volkvolny.” She cut in, giving him a sharp look.
“Yes, but I think a proper introduction would be quite nice.” Nikolai glanced at her, raising his eyebrows. He shot her a glare back.
His eyes trailed to Inessa’s shoulders, they trembled as she inhaled. She lifted her arms and with the motion, shadows started creeping around them, surrounding them in a cloud of dark smoke.
Mal and Alina staggered back in shock, gasping at the sight before them. Nikolai couldn’t help feeling a seed of pride swell in his chest, his Nes was quite a sight.
“She- How can she? Is she-” Alina stuttered, eyes wide.
“Related to the Darkling?” Inessa finished for her. “I’m his daughter.”
Nikolai watched the two of them battle with what this meant, unsure about the dark haired girl before them.
Nikolai’s gaze turned to Nes, watching the way she held her chin high, admiring her unwavering pride.
Mal marched over, grabbing Nikolai by his coat and shoving him. Irritated by the interruption, Nikolai made a mental note to pay him back for that.
“How could you let that thing in here? She could be working for him!” Mal yelled.
Thing. Monster. Heretic. Demon. Nikolai knew Nes was used to the comments, she’d shrug it off and keep that stubborn chin of hers held high. But that didn’t mean he was okay with it.
Nikolai pushed Mal off him, red hot anger burning through him.
“She is on our side. Inessa is nothing like her father, you needn’t worry, Oretsev.” He spat, his voice rising.
“How do you know?” Alina whispered. She looked up warily at Inessa.
Nikolai’s gaze softened, looking at Inessa, “Because I know her. Better than anyone else.”
Nes looked away. A pang of hurt resonated in his chest.
“I won’t hurt you, or anyone for that matter,” She said reassuringly to Alina. “I might make an exception for His Royal Highness though.”
Banter, humor, insults. I can work with that.
“The promise of pain never scared me away, Nes.” Nikolai teased back. To his dismay, Inessa didn’t reply.
Mal sighed, “I think I’ll take that as my cue to leave.” He looked to Alina who nodded, “me too.”
Despite Alina and Mal’s absence, the grand tent never felt stuffier. Nikolai found it hard to breathe, being this close in proximity to Inessa. Being alone with Nes for the first time in what felt like forever.
“And then there were two.” Nikolai finally broke the silence.
“I’m gonna head out as well, I’m still working on the map.” She replied, her voice impassive.
Please don’t go. Not yet.
As she turned to leave, Nikolai called out. “Nes, wait.”
Inessa stopped but she didn’t turn, keeping herself turned away from Nikolai.
“Talk to me.”
Saints Nikolai, way to sound pathetic.
“I have nothing to say to you.”
“Then yell at me. Scold me. Hurt me. Hit me. Anything but this- this silence.” He pleaded.
Nikolai stopped talking before he could lose his composure. His heart was racing, it felt like it would burst right through his sternum and onto the floor. In the silence of the room, he prayed Nes couldn’t hear the drumming of his heart. After an eternity, she finally broke the suffocating quiet.
“You have your fiance to do that for you, Moi Tsarevich.” And with that, her hand slipped from Nikolai’s grasp and she walked back into the shadows.
Nikolai cursed, running a hand through his hair. He walked to his desk, grabbing a glass filled with scotch and he threw it at a tent post. The glass shattered, leaving shards all over the ground. Every day Inessa’s hatred towards Nikolai grew, he could feel it. And who could blame her? Nikolai abandoned her. It’s a miracle she’s even working with him. He slumped to the floor, holding his head in his hands. Carrying the weight of an entire nation, a divided one at that, was taking a toll on him. To make matters worse, he didn’t even have anyone to share his grievances with. Nikolai was completely and utterly alone.

Ch-25 ~The Mad Captain~
Anaya rushed to the side of the railing and looked down at the land far away, "This is pure madness!" She yelled louder than she'd anticipated.
"This is impossible!" She heard Alina speak in a similar tone
“When people say impossible, they usually mean improbable.” Sturmhond responded, grinning. He truly looked like a lunatic.
“Where did this thing come from?” Alina shouted up to Sturmhond.
“I designed her. I built her. And I crashed a few prototypes.”
Anaya started pacing around the ship. She'd always dreamed of flying as a child, but it was really just a foolish dream, one she'd never expected to come true. Her heartbeat grew faster, "Okay um, maybe dying from falling off the sky isn't such a bad way to go out" she wavered her arms.
"Don't worry darling, this ship won't crash, at least that's what I hope" the mad boy nodded. His words weren't helping in the slightest.
Mal leaned over the lip of the cockpit, trying to get a better view of the gigantic guns positioned at the foremost points of the hulls. “Those guns,” he spoke. “They have multiple barrels.”
“And they’re gravity fed. No need to stop to reload. They fire two hundred rounds per minute.” Sturmhond responded
“That’s—”
“Impossible? The only problem is overheating, but it isn’t so bad on this model. I have a Zemeni gunsmith trying to work out the flaws. Barbaric little bastards, but they know their way around a gun. The aft seats rotate so you can shoot from any angle.” The bastard began showing off at the worst possible hour
“And fire down on the enemy,” Mal shouted. “If Ravka had a fleet of these—”
“Quite an advantage, no? But the First and Second Armies would have to work together.”
Anaya suddenly saw a bright light shining off the port bow, great lighthouse at Alkhem Bay. They were close. She could see the gleaming towers of Os Kervo harbour.
But the madman didn't went towards it. She assumed they’d set down somewhere offshore.
But soon the lighthouse beam disappeared from her sight. Just what was this boy intending to do?
The cold winds crashed with Anaya's body, making her quiver. She managed to peer down again, but they were no longer near normal land.
“Sturmhond!” Alina suddenly shouted in panic. “What are you doing?”
“You said you were taking us to Os Kervo—” Mal yelled.
“I said I was taking you to meet my client.”
“Forget that,” Alina wailed. “Where are we going to land?”
“Not to worry,” said Sturmhond. “I have a lovely little lake in mind.”
“How little?” she squeaked.
Mal climbed out of the cockpit in haste, his face burning with fury. “Mal, sit down!” Alina ordered
“You lying, thieving—” he charged towards the boy
“I’d stay where you are. I don’t think you want to be jostling around when we enter the Fold.” Sturmhond remained eerily calm
Mal froze.
The bastard began to whistle that same off-key tune.
You can’t be serious,” Alina said.
“Not on a regular basis, no,” said Sturmhond. “There’s a rifle secured beneath your seat, Oretsev. You may want to grab it. Just in case.”
“You can’t take this thing into the Fold!” Mal bellowed.
“Why not? From what I understand, I’m traveling with the one person who can guarantee safe passage.”
“Maybe I’ll just let the volcra have you and your crew for a late-night snack!” Alina spoke with immense rage
Sturmhond kept one hand on the wheel and consulted his timepiece. “More of an early breakfast. We really are behind schedule. Besides, it’s a long way down. Even for a Sun Summoner.”
Anaya began to pace around again, much rapidly this time. "He really is going to throw us offboard and feed us to the volcra!" Anaya screamed in panic, her breath trembling. She had a nervous smile plastered over her face that looked quite concerning, "I was right" she whispered
“Saints,” Alina swore.
They stars hung in the dark blue sky, the moonlight gleamed behind them. But ahead, there was nothing. The crazy bastard was actually going to drive them into the fold
“Gunners, at your stations,” he called. “Squallers, hold steady.”
“Sturmhond, I’m going to kill you!” Alina shouted. “Turn this thing around right now!”
“Wish I could oblige. I’m afraid if you want to kill me, you’ll just have to wait until we land. Ready?”
“No!” Alina shrieked.
But the next moment, they were in darkness. The blanket of the dark abyss covered the skies. There was an eery silence around them, they were inside the fold.
Alina braced her feet against the deck and threw up her hands in a hurry, casting a wide golden swath of sunlight around the Hummingbird.
“They’re coming, listen.” Mal spoke
Over the rush of the wind, they could heard a cry echo through the Fold, and then the steady beating of volcra wings. They’d found them quickly, drawn by the smell of human prey. Their wings beat the air around the circle of light Alina had created, .
Anaya rushed to a side of the cockpit and picked up a rifle, bracing herself for whatever was to come their way.
Alina spread her arms, allowing the light to gleam brighter, driving them back.
“No,” Sturmhond spoke. “Bring them closer.”
“What? Why?” she asked. The boy was really craving to pet his tamed beasts.
“They hunt us,” he said, raising his voice so everyone could hear him. “Maybe it’s time we hunted them.”
“Pull back the light,” Sturmhond told Alina.
“He’s out of his mind,” she said to Mal. “Tell him he’s out of his mind.”
But he hesitated. “Well...”
“Well what?” she asked, incredulously. “In case you’ve forgotten, one of those things tried to eat you!”
He shrugged “Maybe that’s why I’d like to see what those guns can do.”
Anaya blew out an exasperated breath, the privateer had driven everyone mad.
“Just for a moment,” pressed Sturmhond. “Indulge me.”
The crew was waiting. Tolya and Tamar were hunched over the protruding barrels of their guns. They looked like leather-backed insects. Tamar gestured Anaya to come over. So she quietly put the rifle back and went towards on of the guns , it seemed to be reserved for her. "We need you here" Tamar spoke. Anaya nodded and took her position
Mal lifted his rifle to his shoulder.
The circle of light contracted, shrinking around the ship.
The Volcra began to shriek in excitement.
"All the way!" the mad captain commanded.

a/n: @mischiefmanaged71 @crazyhorseforgot
warnings: Language, Squaller!OC
pairing: Nikolai Lantsov x OC!Dasha Romanov
summary: There is clearly an understatement between Nikolai and his childhood friend. But who knew that things could get even worse when the sun shines on the horizon?
gold and silver
part one. about meetings
Tumblr media
I looked at the stars. Silver jewels scattered over the blue velvet of the night sky - this was the sky above the sea, in which I spent almost all my time. And yet, accepting Nikolai's invitation was one of the best decisions of my life.
I have found a new family. Tolya and Tamar turned out to be some of the most incredible people I have ever met. Such a connection was for me...not new... The fact is that I myself experience such a connection, the only thing I do not know for one hundred percent is whether it is mutual.
During the time spent side by side on the ship, next to Sturmhond, I realized that I love Nikolai. And every day this feeling only intensified. I looked at him and tried to figure out if his feelings were similar to mine, or if Nikolai was acting like a little stinging fox as usual. But there was something in his actions, looks, words that made me suspect that we had a good chance.
We became much closer than in our youth, we were two parts of one whole, we were those who cannot live without each other. We never said anything that could indicate our feelings for each other. I don't know if it was necessary at this time? I did not want to destroy that wonderful peace between me and Nikolai, which we have been building and restoring for many years, and now we support it.
Each time, Tamar said with a cheerful smile how Nikolai's heart was beating, as soon as he thought of me. But how was I to know if she was joking or not? You can't tell these twins.
A cool sea breeze blew into my face. I smiled, twisting it with my fingers into a small whirlwind and letting it float through the water. But from the other side of the ship there were conversations. And several voices were clearly unfamiliar to me. I frowned and pushed off the deck with my hands, striding confidently there to understand what was happening. I don’t know what was going on, but my gut told me that something was going on that I obviously didn’t like. Because of this, the wind increased, rose, crashing into the sails.
I went to the other side of the deck and saw Tolya, Tamar and two strangers at the gangway. One of them was a tall, strong guy, next to him was a short girl with long, black hair. They talked about something very tensely.
-What's going on?-I shouted to be heard. All pairs of eyes immediately stared at me and at my menacing face.
-Dasha!- Tolya greeted joyfully, waving his hand to me. -We have unexpected passengers here,-he pointed to a couple of strangers.
-Yes, they want to charter our ship,- Tamar continued, showing me a gold hairpin that sparkled in the moonlight. -We need to take them to the captain. How is he? In what mood? - She smiled strangely at me.
I was embarrassed, but did not show it, only raising my eyebrows.
-As usual, in good health,-I said, folding my arms over my chest and carefully looking at the strangers. -Good, -I nodded. -Tolya?
He nodded to me.
-Take them to the captain.
It seemed to me that the issue was resolved, but then soldiers of the First Army appeared from the darkness.
-You! Stop!- the old man in military uniform croaked.
- Do you want a fight? Huh?-Tamar said menacingly, pulling out her axe.
-This man is a deserter, he must be with us!- the old man continued.
-Is that so?- Tamar continued caustically. I rolled my eyes, rubbing the bridge of my nose. -They want a fight!- she roared, causing everyone who was carrying bags on deck to grab their weapons.
-Oh, Saints, help me...- I said to myself, mentally dreaming how I would conduct a conversation with them, and how I would ask Nikolai to give them a couple of diplomacy lessons.
-I don't want to aggravate the conflict with Shu Han...
It was a mistake. Mistake old man in uniform. Tolya took up the sword.
-We are not Shu Han,-Yul-Bataar said, approaching his sister. -We are on our own.
-Save your bullets for the war, and tell your soldiers to know their place.- I barked belligerently, stepping onto the gangplank. I was rather tired of this situation, and I wanted to exhale as soon as possible and calmly sail away. Both my words and my old caftan, with which I did not dare to part after the Second Army, were clearly a weighty argument. Ravka's soldiers retreated.
Strangers boarded.
They looked rumpled, but they were very smart. I slowly examined them from head to toe, trying to isolate at least something that could help me find out more information about them, but I did not find anything strange or unusual.
-We’ll go to the captain,- I said slowly and low, when Tolya and Tamar appeared behind me. - He will give his final verdict.
The guy jerked his shoulder in annoyance, glaring at me angrily, but I didn't care.
-Let's go. -I passed by, heading straight into the hall to Nikolai.
I physically felt the tension that was in the air. No one dared to utter a word, I think the twins and I looked menacing, so the strangers were silent.
Nobody ever tried to charter our ship, it was the first time, but it was...interesting.
We approached the doors when Tolya opened them.
-Captain,- he turned to Nikolai, going inside. -They want to charter our ship.
- And immediately. - Some unprecedented courage suddenly woke up in the boy. We were also in the room.
-We need to sail now!- the girl also flushed, stubbornly following her companion.
Nikolai chuckled.
-Let's get two things straight,- he braced his hands on the table. -I'm not given orders on my own ship.- His face immediately became tense.
It was always amazing how he switched from one state to another so quickly.
- And we're already sailing. Glad you joined. And now, maybe add some light to the cabin, - I frowned, not understanding what he was talking about. - Since you, Alina Starkov. Saint on twenty million kruge.
These words hung in the air like a thick fog. My face stretched in surprise, I felt something rising in my stomach. That was the last thing I expected to hear tonight, I would have been prepared for anything but this. I looked first at Alina, then at her companion, and in the end my eyes fixed on Nikolai, as if demanding an answer from him.
How did he know? How does he know the price for this girl? Why didn't he say anything to me... That is, to us.
Lantsov quickly shot his eyes in my direction, and again turned to the newcomers. He pulled a revolver out of its holster and placed it meaningfully on the table.
-Alive or dead.- His voice became low and almost menacing as she looked at Alina.
What the hell...
-It’s silly to play up, Starkov, you are a Sun Summoner,-Nikolai continued.
In surprise, I even had to lean my hand against the wall as thoughts raced feverishly through my aching head. I looked at Tolya, but judging by his expression, he was also, to put it mildly, shocked. We both stood with him, behind Alina Starkov's back, like fools, the only ones who didn't understand what the hell was going on.
-Yes, you are right,- Alina threw belligerently, throwing up her hands, from which light immediately escaped.
Nikolai whistled.
-Not bad,- he shook his head, with a meaningful smile. - I'm hard to impress.
But Sun Summoner clearly did not share Nikolai's fun.
-Let us go,- she hissed, -Or lose twenty million kruge and the ship. Her threats looked a little funny. No matter how saintly Alina was, she did not seem to me an experienced fighter, rather a chaotic bundle of energy.
The light burned in Alina's hands, like a real, living flame of light. I myself did not understand how I took a step forward, how my fingers froze in signs that they could summon a hurricane. But I was gently pulled by the shoulder.
-Don’t, Dasha,- Tolya whispered to me. -Don’t jump to conclusions, Romanov. We can always get into a fight. Where is your diplomacy?
I glared at him, reluctantly admitting that he was right.
-Let you,- Nikolai got up from his chair at the table. -You can sentence us to death in the sea desert,- he went to the table, pouring some amber alcohol into a crystal glass. - Please note that we are already far from the shore. Besides, I won't hand you over to the Fjordans.
-Really? -Alina immediately stopped releasing light from her palms.
-Yes, Saints forbid,- Nikolai simply threw, realizing in a moment that he had blurted out. -Or is it indecent to say this in front of a living saint?- He turned to me in a rhetorical question. I tilted my head, pursing my lips.
They continued talking, but the words slipped past me. The only thing I heard was Nikolai's cute tone when he spoke to Alina. I still tried furiously to grab at least one word of their conversation, but I couldn't. For some reason, I felt betrayed. Did Nikolai not trust me so much that he could not devote to his ingenious plan to "capture" the Sun Summoner? Am I not the kind of person he can share everything with? He knows that I will always be by his side.
I looked at Nicholai. I felt offended. I felt selfish. Why was my chest so empty? Why, as soon as Alina Starkov stepped on board, did it hurt so much?
Maybe I did something wrong, since Nikolai no longer trusts me? Did I say something that made him doubt me?
Someone touched my shoulder, and only then did I wake up.
Tolya looked at me with regret, nodding in the direction of the exit. Of course, damn it, he heard my heart. I quickly gathered myself together, gave him a forced smile and nodded, following him and our "guests" to show them their sleeping quarters.
-No, no, no,- we were all immediately interrupted by the voice of Nikolai. We turned to look at him at once. - You, - he pointed to me. - Dasha, stay for a minute. -he asked, trying not to smile.
Tolya smiled slyly at me and led the passengers out of the cabin. I carefully closed the door, turning to look at him.
- Nikolai. - I said evenly, straightening my back, and folding my hands behind my back, raising my eyes with an effort to look at him...
He finally allowed himself a wide smile as he walked up to me, taking my hand and leading me forward through the cabin.
- Nikolai, if you want to talk, then speak. - Sharper than you wanted, I said.
-What's the matter?- he asked softly, his blue eyes sparkling charmingly, the way he always did when he wanted to get something.
I exhaled heavily, disengaging from his grip and rubbing my wrists.
This gesture obviously did not please him. He stopped smiling.
- Dasha, what happened? Any problems?
I looked at him from under my brows.
-Well,- I began hard. -Tell me, Nikolai, do you trust me?- I decided to come from afar.
He opened his eyes in surprise.
-Of course I trust you. More than anyone, you know it дорогая. Ever since you didn't tell your nanny my name as a kid when she asked about the stolen cakes. -he said, grabbing my hand again. Those words made me smile faintly.
-Remember that?- he chuckled. -I remember well how you…
-...Saved your ass for the first time? Yes, such things are not forgotten, Nikolai. - I continued for him, forcing the prince to roll his eyes jokingly. -But... It's different. Why didn't you tell me about Alina Starkov? - I finally asked. -Do you think, - I swallowed a lump in my throat from the weight of my own words. - Do you think that I cannot help you? It was possible to devote, at least in general, to your incredible plan. - I turned up my nose.
Nicholai sighed softly.
-Everything had to be as natural as possible. No one should have suspected anything, Alina Starkov in particular. No, of course, I don’t doubt your acting skills, Romanov, but I already walked on the edge of a knife.- He said as his hands let go of my palms, gently wrapping around my waist. - I didn't know it would hurt you so much. I didn't think about your feelings, my mistake.
He shook her head. - Excuse me. - He looked into my eyes, and some mischievous sparks sparkled in his eyes. - Can you forgive me?- he smiled.
I closed my eyes.
-Promise to continue to share such things with me, Nikolai.- I asked quietly, blowing off the hair that had fallen on my face.
-I promise if you let me offer you a worthy apology. -He ran his fingers along my cheek.
Saints. Are my assumptions correct? Could it be that the connection I felt was shared by Nikolai?
-Watching what you mean? -Oh, dear Nikolai, don't think that I'll give you up so easily. - Everyone can say big words.
If I don't drive you crazy, Nikolai Lantsov, no one can do it.

Anastasiya Stellan experienced a resurrection of sorts the moment she awoke on the other side of the fold. Though she had crossed over in her late teens, she found herself devoid of memories, oblivious to the sacrifices made to secure her passage.
Residing in Ketterdam proved to be a stark departure from her birthplace of Ravka. The city teemed with shadows, its alleys harboring a legion of criminals. Yet even in Ravka, where deceit lurked beneath the surface, the villains remained cloaked in the guise of respectability. It was in Ketterdam where Anastasiya encountered Kaz Brekker, a chance encounter at a local tea shop evolving into an unexpected companionship, the two finding solace in each other's company during her breaks.
Though aware of Kaz's illicit dealings, Anastasiya kept her own counsel. While Kaz extended invitations to join his enterprise, she demurred, biding her time until she felt prepared to take the plunge.
Anastasiya reveled in her subtle defiance, relishing in tormenting the Dime Lions with harmless pranks and subtle subversions. Kaz's sporadic absences didn't initially arouse Inej's suspicions until she chanced upon him deep in conversation with Anastasiya, a serene moment that piqued her curiosity. Determined to unravel the mystery surrounding this enigmatic girl, Inej forged her own bond with Anastasiya.
Misjudged as a mere tea-maker and cleaner, Anastasiya concealed her true prowess, reveling in nighttime escapades orchestrated alongside Kaz. Despite her clandestine affiliation with the Dregs, she maintained a careful distance from Kaz's public persona, refusing to be tethered by labels until she deemed herself ready.
Her eventual integration into the Dregs, particularly the crows, marked a significant milestone, evoking smiles from Inej, Jesper's astonishment tempered by warmth, and Kaz's subtle but unmistakable approval.

An enigma she was; Kyra Kozlov was know as the siren. A tidemaker who had her way around people with her mesmerising words.
The sea seems to embrace the sun as it sets, but in truth the sea can never feel the sun's warmth.
Kyra wanted to do something the sea couldn't; She wanted to swallow the sun, swallow her whole and keep her safe from the dark which seeks to extinguish the golden light. Kyra would let her sun boil the water, the flames to be ablaze in the deep sea with her siren voice as fuel.
But the sea knew she couldn't do it, cause she was afraid she would be her sun's doom.
