âToday I Listened...â Day #89
Today I Listened to âSaltwaterâ by Chicane & Maire Brennan. Oo, here we go another sad bop. Itâs a pretty generic house track but there are redeeming features if you can be bothered to listen for them. The quavery vocals remind me of Son Luxâs Ryan Lott, the guitar fills are good, and there are some nice chord inversions. Otherwise, itâs in one ear and out the other.

There is something about the modern trance/techno/electronic music from Europe, though I do agree the volume of tunes remains staggering. However, that's not enough for them, because another facet of their work continues to be their predilection for mixes, i.e. these musicians seem to release every possible version of their songs, so you cannot really decide, which one could be the definition. For instance, you're surprised, when you find out the piece you listened to on a radio does not show the entire picture like in the case of Chicane's hit in the link. You know the composition for the edit, which emphasizes the most pop parts of the endeavour despite the fact the original could also function as a chartbuster.

@Lady-Merian said she was wanting some Celtic music recommendations, so I decided to inflict share some of the music Iâve liked. First off, see here for a general list of Celtic music recommendations, along with a few specific songs. What follows here is a list of specific songs, with links where feasible. Fair warning that these are an eclectic group and that some may smudge the line between Celtic and other genres (but thatâs okay! Those lines tend to smudge anyhow).
First off, though, I really do recommend listening to some Thistle & Shamrock - either some of the programs (if you find a program listing that sounds interesting but thereâs no program for you to listen to, try looking for it here) or the streaming radio station - as itâs a great source for finding songs.
My list of songs is below, though. Heads up that a few of these involve murder or attempted murder, if youâre sensitive to that (I can provide specifics, if needed).
Ashley Davisâs Night Travels and With You Tonight (actually, her entire Night Travels album is probably worth a listen).
Nicolette Macleodâs 1919.
Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamerâs Tam Lin and Willieâs Lady.
Iona Fyfeâs Sleepytoon & Earl Richard; her The Northern Lights is pretty too.
Kate Rusby and Kathryn Robertâs The Queen and the Soldier, The Constant Lovers, and Exile.
Emily Smithâs Sweet Lover of Mine, May Colven, and King Orfeo.
Solasâs Pastures of Plenty.
Cassie and Maggieâs Strip the Willow Set.
Joe McKennaâs Echoâs Calling.
Cara Dillonâs Hereâs a Health.
Cathie Ryanâs So Hereâs To You and Whatâs Closest to the Heart.
Mary Blackâs A Song for Ireland, Turning Away, Siul a Ruân, and St. Kilda Again.
The Singing Kettleâs The Train to Glasgow.
Enter the Haggisâs Down with the Ship.
Karine Polwartâs Follow the Heron (1:18), The Good Years (18:53), Dignity (I just found this one, but I think I like it - it mostly starts at 36:40), and Rivers Run (41:24).
I donât know Iâve listened to the whole program, but Thistle and Shamrock did an interview with the writer & composer and played through the album These are the Hands. The whole thing is probably worth a listen, but if you want a couple of specific tracks, listen to Built on the Clyde (36:44) and Cutty Sark (51:52).
(I also think Thistle & Shamrockâs The Lost Songs of St. Kilda program is worth a listen; I remember some of the songs being pretty haunting.)
Maire Brennan was the last list, but I would especially recommend Follow the Word, Mary of the Gaels, and Bi Thus a Mo Shuile.
Loreena McKennitt was also on the last list, but a few specific songs, if youâre not familiar: The Lady of Shalott, Between the Shadows, Danteâs Prayer, Standing Stones, and Breaking of the Sword.
Finally, Dougie MacLean was also on the last list (and I listed some specific songs), but a few more to try: Solid Ground, Mary Queen of Scots, and She Loves Me (When I Try).
#Lady-Merian#music#I believe these are all free from swears but my apologies if something has slipped through!#Hope you find *something* of interest in here!#Thank you in advance for indulging my desire to throw a bunch of songs at you#I also know I'm going to remember that I've left off someone that really should be on here as soon as I post this :P

Todayâs mix:
Club Mix 99 by St. Peter & Heaven 1999 House / Trance / Progressive Trance / Big Beat / Nu-Disco
This double-disc mix has a lot of pros and a lot of cons, so let's break them down, starting with the pros. First off, the selection on this thing is pretty great. When you have the backing of a major label like Universal to make a mix, you're not gonna run into much trouble getting access to the tracks that you want. And it's for mostly that reason that this mix is a good one. It has plenty of bangers: some bonafied, surface-level classics (I will never, ever tire of Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone"), some sweet remixes, and a bunch of tunes that should definitely be revisited again. Disc 1 consists of mostly house tracks and Disc 2 has lots of trance and progressive trance jams, and a common theme that seems to unite them both is an overarching feeling of warm bliss, with the second disc especially encouraging you to engage in some fancy-free fist pumpery. So if you wanna try to re-experience some of the sublime feelings of what the house and trance worlds were bopping to in the clubs in 1999 (or maybe experience 1999 for the first time), then this thing'll do the trick.
Now for the cons. As far as the mixing goes, it's really not great. Universal got a couple randos, a brother and sister duo who call themselves St. Peter & Heaven, to put this thing together. Looking at their Discogs profile, they'd done plenty of mixes before this one, but only for major labels, which leads me to believe that they just knew the right people and had never been awarded a major label mix assignment based on their skill or popularity among dance music fans. Â As a result, the transitions tend to be weak, often sounding like your most basic crossfades, and placements of certain tracks are questionable at best. Another thing that Universal appears to have skimped on was the audio quality. With tracks like these, especially the epic and euphoric trance ones, you want stuff that's at a premium sonic quality in order to get a full, immersive experience; the type of sound that makes you feel like you're actually sitting in the decked-out studio that produced it. And the tunes on here don't come close to that standard. But if you're not much of an audiophile, it probably won't bother you that much.
So, in conclusion, while this is a pretty ample mix for its selection and the fact that it reflects well upon 1999, there's still probably better mixes out there that contain tracks of a similar caliber and are both sonically superior and have more authenticity.
Listen to Disc 1 here (minus track 1 for some reason). Listen to Disc 2 here (minus tracks 3 and 16 for some reason).
Highlights:
Disc 1:
Moloko - "Sing It Back (Boris Musical Mix)" Eclipse - "Makes Me Love You (Morning Star Mix)" Groove Armada - "At The River (English Riviera Mix)" Supakings - "Back & Forth" Basement Jaxx - "Red Alert (Jaxx Club Mix)" MAW Presents India - "To Be In Love (MAW '99 Mix)" Supercar - "Computer Love (Olav Basoski Remix)" Pete Heller - "Big Love (Eat Me Edit)" Powerhouse Featuring Duane Harden - "What You Need (Full Intention Power Mix)" Blockster - "Grooveline (Blockster Club Mix)" The Wiseguys - "Ooh La La" The 3 Jays - "Feeling It Too (Blunt Radio Edit)" Phats & Small - "Turn Around (Norman Cook Remix)" The Three Amigos - "Louie Louie (The Wiseguys)" Yomanda - "Synth & Strings" Disc 2:

I was tagged by @1stlieutenanttwitchy, and of course, I love music tags, so I must oblige.Â
Rules: weâre snooping on your playlist. put your entire music library on shuffle and list the first 10 songs then choose 10 victims. (Note: I don't listen to that many songs, as most of the music I listen to is instrumental, so most of this will be music, and not, strictly speaking, songs.)
1. Flight of the Silver Bird - by Two Steps from Hell.Â
This song starts out delicate and lovely and builds and swells into something powerful and even a little bit harsh by the end. I love it so much.Â
2. Where is Bernard - by The Sidh (I cannot link this one to a youtube video, but it is on spotify. I highly recommend it.)
Starts out with a gentle nostalgia, and works its way into something cheerful and uplifting. The tune is lively. I used to listen to this song every day when I worked back at home in the restaurant and danced in the kitchen when I swept. I listen to it whenever I feel hopeless and homesick.Â
3. Possibility - by Sarah ModeneÂ
A piano piece. It's very lovely, but isn't light or airy. It's well grounded, and starts out a little serious, but near the end it lightens up a bit, before become serious again.Â
4. Night Witches - by SabatonÂ
Okay, I LOVE Sabaton. There's a post floating around Tumblr about the all female 588th Night Bomber Regiment. Yeah, this song is about them. You should give it a listen.Â
5. Yuve Yuve Yu - by The Hu
Okay, it's time some of you were introduced to the epic glory that is Mongolian metal. This one isn't my very favorite of their songs, but it's a good one to start on. Mongolian throat singing is so unique and if you don't think it's just about the coolest thing you've ever heard, then I'm not sure we can be friends.
6. Byker Hill - by The Cottars
A mostly a capella rendition of a traditional English song about coal-miners.Â
7. Only Us - Miracle of SoundÂ
I think this is a Game of Thrones song? I love it anyway.Â
8. Ida's Jig - by Daimh
A foot tapping jig. If fiddle music makes your heart happy, here's something for you. And if you like ullailian pipes too, than you're in for a treat. I practice playing the spoons and rhythm bones to this piece.Â
9. Perfect Time - by Maire Brennan
Maire Brennan is Enya's sister, and that's easy enough to hear. Her voice is similarly haunting. This song is beyond lovely, and has that beautiful, ethereal, fantasy feel to it that come from the perfect blending of vocals and music.
10. The Irish Meadow - by Gabrielle Aapri
A lively piano tune, bright and evocative. Gabrielle Aapri is one of my favorite pianists, all her music is so lovely.Â
I hereby tag @i-am-a-small-hobbit, @maysartcorner, @captaingondor, @dangerously-human, @rithmeres, @autumnhobbit, @thisbibliomaniac, @notentirelyunprecedented, @hobbitsetal and @soundlessdragon
