The Origin of the Species.
Here is the impossibly rare amp I was going apesh*t about seeing on Saturday:
~1996 Bernard Raunig "#Bernie" amp (#Filmosound 385 conversion), owned by @chriswstringer8
If you own, have ever played, or covet a converted "Filmosound" movie projector amp - here is one of its rare forefathers. This one magically appeared on Marketplace last week and sold instantaneously, Chris being the lucky winner! Originals like this NEVER come up for sale...there were only ~25 ever made.
Bernard Raunig of was an electronics repair person and tinkerer, who purchased a lot of surplus Bell & Howell model 385 film projectors being auctioned off by a Hamilton, Ontario school board in the early 90s. According to the article by @colinjcripps in @fretboardjournal Electric Annual Vol 2, Raunig had a notion he could extract the audio amplifier sections from these movie projectors and repurpose them as guitar amplifiers - making him, I suppose, the first "upcycler" in the guitar business! The cabinet was homemade from solid pine and covered in sail canvas which was then brushed with lacquer.
The very first of Bernard's conversions was sold to Canadian musician Colin Cripps (at the time of the band Crash Vegas, and later playing with such musical icons as Kathleen Edwards and Blue Rodeo), who skeptically auditioned it at Raunig's insistence. In his article, Colin says that he had never seen anything like the "Bernie", but despite his hesitance he immediately fell in love with the sound produced by the unlikely little contraption, and bought it on the spot. Colin's "Bernie No. 1" has appeared on countless recordings since that day in late 1993, and no doubt has played a huge role in the popularization of the Filmosound guitar amp conversion "cult".
Well, now I have seen *two* original "Bernie" amps! I am not likely to see any more in my lifetime. I am grateful to have friends like Chris and Colin who let me take snaps of all their interesting and historically significant gear to share with you!

CBC to Celebrate Gordon Lightfoot on Canada Day
- July 1 broadcast to feature 2024 tribute show at Massey Hall
Canada will celebrate not only itself, but native son Gordon Lightfoot, on Canada Day.
On July 1, the CBC and Massey Hall, in partnership with Gordon Lightfoot Estate, will broadcast the 2024 Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot tribute concert nationwide and worldwide on CBC’s YouTube channel.
The gig featured Blue Rodeo and the Lightfoot Band backing such artists as Allison Russell, Burton Cummings, Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee, Sylvia Tyson and others.
The resulting film is “tightly edited” down to 90 minutes and includes all performances, though not in the same order they unfolded.
Lightfoot, who died in 2023, played Massey more than 170 times, more than any other artist.

Summary:
“I told you not to come here anymore,” Grantaire says.
Éponine laughs. It’s an even more raucous, gravelly sound than it used to be. “Come on Taire, don’t give me that.” She bumps her knuckles playfully against his arm. “You know you love me.”
“I never said I didn’t love you. What I said is you can’t come here anymore.” Éponine flicks her hair over her shoulder (it’s faded. She hasn’t dyed it in a while) and tries to step through the doorway. He blocks her way. Doing so, he feels a pathetic little quiver of pride in his hollow, aching chest. At least he’s making a show of holding his ground. “Éponine, I’m serious. I’m done with you. You can’t expect me to keep taking care of you if you aren’t going to take care of yourself. You can’t expect me to keep picking the pieces up after you while you willfully ruin your life, over and over again.” You can’t … You can’t, it’s killing me. It’ll kill me even before it kills you. Éponine puffs out an exaggerated sigh. “You’re so dramatic, Taire. I just need a place to stay for the night, that’s all.”   “No.” “One night, Taire. Parnasse is in a mood.” Grantaire’s heart squeezes. As do the fists at his side. As does his throat. But still, he manages to speak. “That’s your problem, Ép.” His nails are cutting into his palms—but even so, he can feel his hands trembling. “You chose to live with the bastard.” Éponine’s mouth purses into a small frown. She takes a step back and tilts her head up to get a better look at him. (She was always so small … When he curled his body around hers, she seemed to just disappear into him. And he thought he could keep her safe. He thought he could just envelop her and keep her safe…) Éponine’s gaze travels over his features, assessing. Finally, she cracks a grin. “You’re full of shit.” She steps forward again and pushes past him. Grantaire feels his traitorous body give way to her.    Read the rest on AO3

Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot at Massey Hall in 2024
- Burton Cummings, Allison Russell among guest performers at May 23 gig
Massey Hall will host one final Gordon Lightfoot gig.
The Toronto concert hall on May 23, 2024, will present Celebrating Gordon Lightfoot. The concert is to feature the late troubadour’s road band and Blue Rodeo playing behind singers such as Burton Cummings, Allison Russell, Sylvia Tyson and others.
Massey Hall announced the concert Nov. 17, which would have marked Lightfoot’s 85th birthday.
“This event will enable fans, family and friends to recognize and pay tribute to the incredible music he gifted the world,” the venue’s management said in a statement.
Lightfoot, who died in May, played more than 170 shows at Massey, more than any other artist. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the nonprofit venue and its associated community programs.
