Temple Bar London

// Temple Bar in the picture is a 350-year-old gateway to the City of London, designed by Sir Christopher Wren. It formerly stood in Fleet Street/The Strand near the Royal Courts of Justice and was once the principal ceremonial entrance from the City of London to the City of Westminster, You can see where the temple bar (gate) was, as it is where the temple bar memorial is now next to the Royal Courts of Justice, which replaced an older gate built in 1293

The word Bar for a gate comes from the Middle Ages, in that period, some gates to a city were called bars, the bar reference is short for barbican or fortified Structure, these bars or gates can be seen today in York Yorkshire.

The Temple reference in the name of the Temple Bar refers to the nearby, old Knights Templar complex and church, which, apart from the church, is now gone and now where the barrister and judges' offices/accommodation are.

On a side note, the word bar was also used for the wooden barrier in old courtrooms, hence the term called to the bar i.e when you become a Barrister but the term, could also refer to the Temple Bar as you had to go under it, to get the Royal Courts of Justice or the barrister/Judges offices and accommodation in the temple area, Trainee Barristers can also train and stay here, one famous trainee Barrister who trained here was Mahatma Gandhi.

The Temple gate, now in Paternoster Square near St. Paul's Cathedral is sometimes open to the public as there, is a small room at the top
