Fic that came to me in a dream (that I may or may not write eventually who knows) where Deku (2nd year - no war au) gets hit by a quirk that knocks him unconscious and makes him unusually brave and clear headed for 24 hours after waking with a short lived migraine.. he suddenly knows exactly what he wants/has been missing and is brave enough to go after it. So he walks right up to Kacchan, grabs him by the wrist with a low "we need to talk" and drags him out to stand beneath a sakura tree and confess. It works out immediately to his surprise - no fighting, no posturing, no misunderstandings. Just Kacchan standing there with wide eyes and pink cheeks in stunned silence for a few seconds before lunging toward him to grab his face and kiss him! They're attached at the hip through the rest of school, tie for second top marks right behind Momo, get an apartment together after graduation, immediately register together as a hero duo and take the charts by storm.. they toy with the idea of opening their own agency but ultimately decide it's too much paperwork and they're fine having a boss if they can focus on the actual hero work and each other.. Kacchan proposes at the hero gala when they break the top 10 and all of Japan loses their minds.. when they're number 7 and 8 they're part of a rescue team up very similar to Eri's, and there are 2 traumatized toddlers with no next of kin that imprint on them like ducklings, so they make the difficult decision to foster them just like Aizawa did for Eri. And just like Aizawa, they end up adopting them when they still have custody 2 years later. It's slowed their climb toward number 1, but neither of them really mind. They have a family now! They're both so so happy! They buy a house closer to the neighborhood they grew up in, get a dog, get comfortable at 10 and 11 on the charts, celebrate with the rest of Japan when Mirio takes the number 1 spot, cry together at All Might's funeral, cry again when Kiri and Mina welcome their first baby to the world and ask them to be the god parents, watch Kota and Eri and Maharo and Katsuma all graduate.. they're walking home hand in hand after their oldest's middle school graduation and had just decided to stop for ice cream when his heart stops - someone he's thought he's seen from the corner of his eye a few times over the years is now standing right in front of him with a smug look despite the split lip and bags under their eyes - the same person who hit him with that quirk that helped him confess to Kacchan all those years ago. He can't move, can't even breathe, when they stride right up to him and tap him on the forehead. He has time to give Kacchan a panicked look and get confused concern in return before he crumples to the ground unconscious... and wakes up back in Recovery Girl's office in second year. There's a quietly relieved All Might sitting in the chair beside him, and a gruff teenaged Kacchan calling him a reckless idiot leaning against the wall by the door and he's hyperventilating immediately while he thinks about what this means.. he never adopted his children (he can still feel their hands in his and hear their muffled shouts of concern as he fell), never got married (he can feel his wedding band too, just as cold as the tears on his face), never broke the top 10 or celebrated any of his friends doing the same, never graduated, never had his first time with Kacchan, never even confessed to Kacchan.. he lost EVERYTHING in the blink of an eye and suddenly the migraine is back and the pain radiates down into his chest and he's screaming and he can see the panic in All Might and Kacchan's faces but he can't stop.
ANON PLS I'M BEGGING YOU IF YOU DON'T WRITE TRHIS I WILL,. OMFG. RTHEIUJYFG OJGJLHG I'M. NOT OKAY. OH GOD THIS WOULD BE AMAZING.

Catch and Release
May 29, 2024
Our departure from Tana was at 6:30 AM for an 8:30 flight, so we passed on breakfast (Seb had coffee), packed up and Maharo picked us up right on time. There was no traffic to the airport, and once we were at the domestic terminal (early) Maharo had us sit in the car rather than inside - good move, the general waiting room was a little sketchy. When finally they came to collect us, we bid Maharo farewell and were escorted to a quite nice small lounge where we waited a bit longer. The charter flight was two hours and quite smooth. The first hour or so was over mountains with lots of crop fields and small towns visible below. Then the terrain flattened out and the amount of streams and rivers increased until we got to the Indian Ocean. As we came in, we could see miles and miles of pristine beaches to the right and glorious blue and turquoise water to the left. No civilization at all until we were ready to land. We are indeed in the middle of nowhere.
Our resort in Anjajavy is called Anjajavy Lodge, part of Relais & Chateaux. It reportedly has four stars by European standards. As if none of the places we’ve stayed has been luxurious enough, we have indeed arrived at the decadent portion of our trip. We were met at the airport by two of the four or so guides, Lucien and Fabien. Fabien is one of many locals (yes, there’s a nearby village) who work at the lodge. Having taken away the livelihood of many locals when the area was turned into a protected reserve, the lodge management do what they can to provide education and employment to many locals, thus also helping the lodge. Lucien has terrific English and is presumably from elsewhere in the country. Both were young, enthusiastic and welcoming. After a quick lemonade, they loaded us into padded seats mounted on the back of a pickup truck and took us the 30 minutes to the lodge. There, three gals in lovely tropical outfits greeted us, and we entered the fresh cut flower-lined walkway. The lodge is beautiful. It’s open to the air with high ceilings and various (quasi-)indoor and outdoor seating and dining areas. Beyond is a grassy area, then the pool area, and beyond is the sea. To each side are slightly raised walkways to the bungalows, separated for good privacy. Ours is amazing. Enter to a small table and chairs, then more comfy chairs, behind is Jillebob’s room and Sarah has separate quarters up a ladder-like staircase. Wow. The bathroom is lovely. And of course, there’s a porch on the sea-side, over looking the water with two comfy chairs and a hammock. Paradise. The amusing moment came when Seb used the facilities, flushed, and up jumped a frog who had been disturbed by the flush. She screeched, called Jill in, who proceeded to catch the little bugger in the basket used for accessories in the bathroom. (Sarah wanted to leave it alone, but the toilet room is on Jill’s level and she didn’t want to sleep with him.) Jill handed the little basket to Seb, who had the job of releasing it near some water so it wouldn’t get heat stroke on the hot sand and turn into biltong. Lol. Successful catch and release.
We settled in for a few minutes and then headed over to the he lodge for lunch. There’s an oddity about the property in that the first owner decided to reject the standard time zone and create Anjajavy time, which is one hour ahead. The tradition has been carried forward. Not such a problem with “old-fashioned” timepieces but a problem with all the Apple the devices. We have only one watch between us set for Anjajavy time, so we’re definitely going to miss something in these few days. Wacky!
Lunch on the patio of the lodge was delicious, wonderful service. We also sat down with Lucien to plan out our activities for the visit. No grass will be growing under our feet, but we’ll save plenty of time for relaxation. After lunch, a dip in the sea, chilly at first, but actually quite temperate. Then we lounged on “our” lounge chairs on the beach at the end of our private walkway, before coming in, showering and heading out on our first walk. It was just about right - a little less than an hour to see the Tsingy rocks. One can see them all over, but there’s an area surrounded by a wall of them, with bunches within that look like little free-form sculptures.
On our return: tea in “the oasis,” a lovely area surrounding a pond with lily pads, sling-back seats, open grassy area surrounded by trees. At tea time, as if on command, the lemurs come. Totally fun to watch them swing around in the trees, snuggle up to one another, hang out and generally put on a good show. Alas, we didn’t last too awfully long, as it was buggy and we knew we’d have a couple more opportunities to hang out with them.
Back in the room, we relaxed until dinner time - beautifully served and delicious !

Secondary Forest
May 28, 2024
We woke up, packed up and had breakfast in the dining room. The lodge was very nice, but not the same level of elegance we’ve become used to in Africa. Maharo told us it’s one of the higher end places, so it seems that at least this part of Madagascar simply has a different standard of luxury.
Maharo picked us up and we met Mary and Mario at the entrance to the Adalamazantra forest, the secondary forest. The primary forest, where we were yesterday, is a term for a forest with solely endemic plants. The secondary forest has had plants introduced from afar, such as eucalyptus. The secondary forest is also much more accessible by civilized roads, hence has many more visitors. We saw quite a few folks on our walk, but not so many that it was distracting. There were three loops available: short, medium and long. We opted for medium. When we first entered, we marched along a wide path with stepping stones - a far cry from the slightly trodden, less trodden and newly minted paths we forged yesterday! It felt a little more like a nature walk than a rainforest hike. Not five minutes in, we saw our first lemurs - of the bamboo variety. A bunch of little guys side by side on a branch doing their lemur thing, whatever that is. We wound up spotting (well, Mary and Mario spotting) quite a few lemurs, in addition to the bamboo fella’s: golden safika, brown, nocturnal woolies (several asleep in a scrum on a branch), and the largest of all lemurs, the indri indri, which are endangered. The first indri’s we saw were just hanging out. It’s frustrating to see them way up high unmoving. Back lit by the sky, their little faces and red eyes don’t show up well. But when they start moving, swinging wildly from branch to (far away!) branch, they’re a total hoot to watch. Some are a little more active when they sit in place, looking around on high alert craning their necks around and their little ears perking up; or chomping on berries and leaves (their mamas didn’t teach then to eat with their mouths closed). As yesterday, Mary and Mario were great at positioning us for optimal viewing and photos. The best part, however was the audio version of the show. Families of lemurs of the same species call out to each other for a few minutes to say good morning. We first heard the serenade far in the distance, then a family to our left called out with windy, screechy, scary, somewhat high-pitched noises. On command, a nearby family responded, so we got the full, quite loud, effect. So wild. We felt like we were in a rainforest. Oh, we were in a rainforest!! We hoped to see some good birds, but only once stopped when there were quite a few flying around. Beautiful they were, particularly a bright blue one that was too speedy to capture on film. We saw a few flowers, but it turns out that fall simply is the wrong season for much color in the forest, except, of course for green everywhere! To see many of the lemurs, we dipped off the nature-walk-like path and indeed followed more moderately trodden paths up the hillside and down, and up and down again. All in all, it was a wonderful 2 1/2ish hour walk/hike!
Maharo had told us yesterday that he’d take us to Mary’s restaurant for lunch. We were skeptical (worried, even) but it was quite nice. Surprise of surprises, Mary’s name is actually Marie - got lost on us with the French accent. Marie’s restaurant was one of the first to be built in the area. Not only is she a guide but an entrepreneur! Madagascar may be a developing country, but it’s heartening to see a woman has been out on the forefront of tourism for many years!
The ride home was pretty crazy, but didn’t seem quite as insane as the drive out. Still loads of trucks, still the communication of the road passing, swerving, avoiding pot-craters, vehicles and people. And there was the one guy in front of us who Jillebob dubbed “Smoke Fiend” whose vehicle was spewing stinky black fumes, and contrary to the rules of the road, would not let us pass. But we also took the opportunity to appreciate the spectacular, lush, green landscapes of hills, villages, pastures and rice paddies. Really beautiful. Back close to Tana, traffic got bad, but gave us the opportunity to observe life in the outskirts of the city: hardware stores here, butchers with rancid-looking meat hanging there, wonderful fruits and veg here, baskets of grains there - all fascinating. Loads of peeps walking along the street, cars leaving the city at what must have been rush hour. All part of the experience of getting to know Madagascar.
The staff at Maison Gallieni welcomed us back like we were family. We had the same room that we had a few nights ago and did not have to complete any paperwork on check-in. When we asked if there were other guests, the staff, who do not speak much English and don’t understand Jill’s French, replied, “Yes, your friends!” We decided that it had to be one of the two Aussie couples we met a few nights ago. The big reveal at dinner … Maureen and Andy. We exchanged tales of the last two days and learned that, the very quiet Andy, had worked out a whole Australia itinerary for us.
