"Old technology" created a magical stage: Rhizomatiks' Manabe Daito talks about the trajectory of co-creation with Perfume Perfume, known for their cutting-edge technology and stage direction, is celebrating their 25th anniversary with an exhibition entitled "Perfume Disco-Graphy: 25 Years of History and Miracles." How did Rhizomatiks' Manabe Daito, who has supported the group with technology and creativity, create such a "magical" stage? We asked Manabe about the trajectory of their "co-creation" so far.
It all started as a dream story. Rhizomatiks first became involved in Perfume's project after their first Tokyo Dome concert, "Perfume LIVE @Tokyo Dome '1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11'" (2010). Perfume is an artist that uses almost no back dancers, and most of their performances are performed by just the three of them. How can they make the three of them look bigger in the unprecedentedly huge space of the Tokyo Dome? Manabe was consulted on this matter by MIKIKO, a choreographer who has been working with Perfume for a long time. At the time, there were no huge LED displays, and no projectors bright enough to be used on stage. Therefore, the mainstream method was to create a stage performance using the performers, lighting, stage equipment, and back dancers. "We had been doing projection mapping on buildings and such since then, but there were many trade-offs, such as not being able to use the projector and lighting at the same time (the stage had to be darkened when using the projector), so we had to be creative with the stage equipment and costumes. Giant balloon lighting equipment and balloon-popping equipment were born out of the constraints of not being able to use large video equipment."
"The evolution of technology is about becoming normal. I would rather use such old technology in a way that anyone can use, but no one has ever thought of. If it's a Perfume project, then there will be something that only Perfume can do. Perfume's performances are not amazing because the technology is, but because the girls are amazing. I think it's more important to find ways to use technology like that."
MIKIKO describes Perfume as three people who are "qualified to dive into technology." She says that because they have the technology, body, mind, and experience to mediate human will, technology does not become an end in itself, but rather it becomes a magic used by humans, as if technology has been breathed into life. This is exactly what Manabe said about technology becoming a background.

Of the seven days in total, tickets for DAY-1 through DAY-3, which were previously announced, sold out in one day, thanks to your support. Today, we are announcing the DJs who will be performing from DAY-4 onwards.
For the four days from DAY-4 to DAY-7, UNITED WORKS, the organizers of the sophisticated dance music festival "Rainbow Disco Club" both in Japan and overseas, will curate a special music experience featuring DJs active at the forefront of the club scene.
