magical dimension: the magic system
second general worldbuilding post! here's how i imagine the power system works in this handy dandy scheme that i've made:
more explained under the cut! i'll make a separate post in detail for pos+neg magic and witches and fairies and all
the great dragon, the great leviathan and the shadow phoenix are known in the magical dimension as the three creator forces. the great dragon created the magical dimension with the power of its breath. the leviathan came from its own dimension from which it got lost (the infinite ocean), aided the dragon and showed it how to create waters, but its power was too great and destructive for the dragon so it retreated back into the infinite ocean. then the shadow phoenix came, who wanted to cover the world in darkness. it and the dragon fought and after being defeated it also retreated in its own dimension of darkness (relix).
legend says some of the phoenix's ashes managed to fall and stay in the magical dimension, and that's how the power of the phoenix managed to survive.
the great dragon was tired and wounded after the battle, so it chose the planet of domino as its resting place for about a millennia. before dying it passed onto the royal family of the planet the power of its flame so they could keep it safe.
the difference between the phoenix and the leviathan is that the first was born in the magical dimension and thus its power can exist there without the entire dimension collapsing, the second cannot. the infinite ocean probably existed way before the magical dimension itself even.
even though its rawest form is the dragon flame, the power of life that the great dragon granted is in every living thing. this makes it so any sentient human can become either a fairy or a witch by birth, and so anyone can harness magic if they study and practice it hard enough. this also means there can be fairies and witches with domain over any aspect of nature, life, emotions, science, etc.
the shadow fire and the dragon fire can interact with each other (ex: there can be a fairy paladin that can use the glowing fire or there can be a witch/fairy of the shadow fire). however, it's extremely difficult for them to find balance.

WIPs under the cut
Current WIP
Crescent Unbound - A stand-alone fantasy novel following Astrid Vale, a girl left orphaned by the last battle between good and evil. 20 years later she awakens an artifact with great power, it whispers of the return of evil. She must return it to the Chosen One so that it can be used to banish evil once again, but the quest is not as easy as it may seem.
Main Series: The Destiny Chronicles
Overall Synopsis: A generational series that follows a variety of supernatural beings: The Devlins (monster hunters); Seers (see the future), Sandmen (travel/control dreams), Mages (control a variety of magics), Cruth (control elements), and hybrids. Follows certain individuals chosen by Destiny to stop a great evil, and involves a lot of crossover until the end when everyone meets up for the big bad battle.
Book One: Retrospection - 1976 Earth - Russell Walker is a 16-year-old Seer dating Alexis Devlin a 16-year-old monster hunter. When she reveals his identity as a Seer and subsequently explains he's being hunted by a Seer-eating monster, they run away together - unfortunately not to fall in love but rather to save his life.
Book Two: Otherworld - 2007 Otherworld - Maxine Devlin was born into a family of monster hunters, but after 17 years she still hasn’t been allowed to fulfill that role. She has read every journal her ancestors have written and knows everything there is to know about monsters…or so she thinks. After her uncle and cousin go missing, she takes it upon herself to investigate and find them. Very quickly she finds herself in over her head as she travels to a dimension called Otherworld, where she discovers there is much more to magic than she once assumed.
Book Three: Shades of Night - 2010 Shadow - Sebastian Devlin has been to other dimensions before - technically just the one other than the one he was born in. That doesn't make it any easier though when he's dragged through a portal by the monster he's hunting. On his own this time, he'll have to find a way home, if that's even possible. Before he can do that though, he'll have to solve this new dimensions monster problem.
Book Four: Lost in Atlantis - 2011 Atlantis - The Devlin family is back together on a special mission to search the dimension of Atlantis for a particularly dangerous monster - the one that's been hunting Sebastian. The dimension of Atlantis has been abandoned for centuries, but almost immediately they find a single survivor, an impossible face from the past.
Book Five: Vengeance at the Door - 2013 Earth - Sebastian Devlin the monster hunter has become the hunted, chased across multiple states and dimensions by a horrifying visage either of his imagination or reality. Now in Boston, he's just trying to live off the radar of any monster or creature. As the patients at the mental hospital where he works begin to see the same visages he's been seeing, does he run again? Or get himself slaughtered?
Book Six: Heartwood - 2015 Shadow - Janina Heartwood is a good little sister, she picks food off of her brother's plate, puts leaves in his hair, sticks up for him, and trusts him to the edge of the world. After a mysterious man reveals that her brother, Jake, is adopted and descended from a line of monster hunters called the Devlins, she follows him to another dimension to protect him. Now she, Jake, and her boyfriend, Ethan, find themselves trying to destroy an evil entity known as the Sluagh. Janina fights shapeshifters, gremlins, pirates, and more to protect her brother, but will it be enough?
Book Seven: Bring Me a Dream - 2015 Earth - Reynolds McNeil is a Sandman slowly turning into a Nightmare just trying to live out his final few months keeping his friends out of trouble and protecting his little sister from his scary world. Instead, he gets kidnapped and taken to an underground fight ring for augmented humans like himself.
Book Eight: Dream Treader - 2016 Unnamed Dimension - Rescued at the last second by their thought-to-be dead brother, Reynolds and Louie discover there's a lot more to their strange powers than they thought. Things continue to get complicated as they are hunted by a different kind of enemy determined to rid the world of Destiny's chosen - them and their friends.
Book Nine: Moonlight Dreams - 2017 multiple dimensions - Still on the run but now without their leader, Reynolds and his friends try to learn everything they can about why they're being hunted. In the process they rescue their leader, who now must accept that it's time to start the endgame and bring together all of Destiny's chosen before they're hunted down.
Book Ten: Among Infinities - 2017 Isfyd - Carson has lived his entire life in the middle of a Civil War, and most of that was on the wrong side. Although he's on the right side now there are few who believe he's anything other than a spy. When Carson discovers there is a real spy out there he must discover the spy's identity before he's found guilty himself.
Book Eleven: Diplopia - 2018 Isfyd - Carson, now a prisoner of his mother and in the process of resisting her brainwashing, discovers this isn't the first time she's brainwashed him or erased his memories. Exploring his memories and his old home reveals answers and more questions.
Book Twelve: Splintered Crown - 2019 Earth- Freshly rescued, Carson and his friends flee to Earth to find the one thing that can stop his mother and her army - a girl with no idea who she is or how to use her powers, and absolutely no interest in joining their rebellion.
Book Thirteen: Destiny - 2020 Earth - Earth is invaded by soldiers from Isfyd, it will take all of Destiny's chosen to defeat the great evil they've been waiting for. The Devlins, the McNeils, the Moons, and Carson and his friends are the only chance this dimension has. It's looking increasingly like it won't be enough.
Other WIPs
Hounds of Corduff - 1800s Isfyd - A four-book series following the three Cruth apprentices of Corduff as they battle with and against each other in the middle of propaganda and other lies forcing them each further away from the truth.
The Elder Mage - 1976 - 2015 Various dimensions - a series of short stories following Denham Moon, who some would call Earth's most powerful mage. He's been entrusted with bringing together Destiny's chosen at the appropriate time, but he's mostly just procrastinating since he's pretty sure he won't make it through that appropriate time.
Old Gods - a 9-book series following Em'het, a curious and multi-talented boy with great magics who fights the gods to save his family, but after several years of doing the same thing over and over again he wonders if there's a point to any of it if the gods he faces just keep getting stronger and smarter.
Prince of Fireflies - a TV series that follows teenage twins Charlie and Riley as they attempt to keep their younger brother Liam out of trouble with his mysterious light powers. They're mostly unsuccessful.
The Peculiar Adventures of Michael Mallory - an unnumbered book series that follows 9-year-old Michael Mallory after he sneaks aboard his older brother's spaceship. While in the process of trying to return Michael, Nicholas Mallory and his crew are attacked and forced to hyperjump without their navigation machines online. Now they're lost in space, who knows how far from home, and somehow raising a 9-year-old.
The Disappearing Place - just one book - 12-year-old Martin Ramsey has a bad habit of disappearing, blinking in and out of existence seemingly at random. His brother Bartholomew tries to help but ends up making things worse when he starts disappearing too. In a wacky time-traveling dilemma the brothers have to figure out what is happening and why to try and get back home, while continually randomly jumping in and out of time and space.

ive been holding off on posting this bc ive been formulating my thoughts (also i never post) but since it seems we're having a racism in the buffyverse/fandom moment (should be every moment!) I figured now would be a good time to vent my feelings on the first slayer.
I do a lot of hobbyist research into the stone age its a long running special interest of mine, and ive just finished writing my dissertation on a number of things including primitivism in contemporary culture. so drawing from that i wanted to expand on the tags I left on the previous post, with the clarification that i am white and european and therefore am speaking from that perspective on this subject.
as far as I can remember, the original Buffy movie had flashbacks to the medieval period, with a white medieval woman in these flashbacks implied to be the first slayer. if that's right and I'm not just misremembering, this would tie in to the pop culture associations of this era with catholicism, witch hunts, gothic castles; all of which further ties into popular vampire lore. however, the tv show leans away from this, with vampires being the only demons vulnerable to christian iconography and most of the worldbuilding drawing from multitheistic (not sure if this is the right word) traditions, preferring pantheons of minor gods, demons as folkloric monsters rather than fallen angels, and the existence of multiple hell dimensions.
the way the show does this is often very primitivist, primitivism here meaning the (often harmful) romanticisation of cultures and eras considered "less advanced", interpreting them as therefore more exotic, interesting, or just plain better than modern western society and in doing so flattening them into solely an appealing primitive fantasy.
examples of this can be seen in the foreign and/or dead languages used in magic and demon research, the appropriated eastern and African imagery used in weapons and costumes, the writing of characters like kendra (who's "people" seem to know a lot about the supernatural but are never actually named), jenny calendar (who carries plot-relevant cultural knowledge from her mysticised "people"), and nikki wood, through whose son buffy learns the ancient - primitive - origins of the first slayer.
the choice to relocate the origins of the slayer from medieval europe to (im assuming, since they never specify) paleolithic africa make a lot of sense in context of the shows de-emphasing of christianity in their vampire lore. this would change the slayer from a warrior chosen by the church to fight unholy creatures, to a defender of humanity at large from folkloric monsters. it also makes the slayer line a lot longer, extending far back into human history.
you'd think.
because the problem is im not honestly convinced anyone writing these episodes knows or cares about the accepted findings that show homo sapiens originated in africa, I can't honestly say it comes across that they were trying to imply that the slayer existed before the first waves of human migration by depicting her as they did. i dont actually know if these characters are intended to come from the stone age or just an ambiguous pre-colonial africa and im being very generous by writing this post the way i have. I think they made the very simple connection of "primitive = cool and mysterious" to "black = primitive". the depictions of the first slayer and first watchers are tangibly racist. their treatment by the narrative is tangibly racist.
the first slayer is depicted as animalistic, brutal, and vengeful, but rather than have buffy empathise with her over their shared experience of being used as a tool of violence, the episode has buffy mock and belittle her down to making a joke about her unprofessional hair. the first watchers are set up as the backward patriarchal villains for buffy and willow to overcome by rewriting the terms of the slayer lineage, in both cases black characters are vilified to make white women seem cooler, more self-possessed, more powerful.
it's not just the treatment of individual characters. its fundamental pillars of the lore. non-european (and some minority european) cultures are consistently used to be spooky, occult, and exotic set dressing, while two whole season finales hinge on abject primitivism and antiblackness.
to clarify, i think in another show with a different writing team, the depiction of scientifically accurate (i.e. dark-skinned) early homo sapiens could be achieved in a wholly inoffensive way if these characters were simply written as people. removing the layers of primitivism from the first slayer reveals a traumatised girl who was forced to fight, just like fandom-beloved characters buffy and faith, albeit from a very different time period. but the layers of primitivism are the reason why she was written in the first place. the "primal" is mysterious, spooky, powerful, and therefore makes for good writing without ever having to clarify what it is you mean when you say "primal".
stone age people were not animalistic manifestations of modern-day people's repressed subconscious. they were people. the refusal to see this is another branch from the same root - that the writers see cultures and people outside of the modern west as less-than. but if their language sounds cool for a summoning chant, then they get to be less-than in a ~cool and mysterious~ way, i guess.
#if ive used any incorrect terms or misconstrued anything here id be much obliged if you could let me know#anyway.#analysis#personal#buffy the vampire slayer

On 'Energy Crystals'
Copying this over from a worldbuilding write up I posted on Discord!
Tagging @athenswrites @theprissythumbelina @hessdalen-globe @caxycreations @moremysteriesthantragedies @avrablake @thatndginger
While Energy Crystals are a very modern innovation, the pursuit for a crystal based means of high density energy storage is probably as old as the use of crystals in any of their myriad forms.
To skip the deep dive, 'magic crystals' operate through the highly ordered nature of their composition, a structure which extends beyond the three dimensions of the physical plane and which allows them to warp and rend the very fabric of the Underlay, that little understood realm of energy which permeates existence. In order to 'activate' their properties, however, energy in some form or another has to be supplied, 'forcing' the crystal's internal structure into the needed to act against the oppressive forces of the Underlay; heat, in the past, and these days truly massive amounts of electricity for the most intense applications.
A long noted characteristic of these crystals, however, has been their 'lag'. This effect describes the tendency for crystals to retain a small, rapidly decreasing degree of their powered properties even after their external energy source has been removed. The various physical characteristics of the crystal itself influences the degree of this lag, sheer size chief among them, which has at times been both a blessing and a curse for those using crystals for technical applications.
Still, it is not too difficult to see how a crystal's potential to retain energy might be a useful quality in and of itself. Various bodies have long attempted to harness this characteristic, but to little avail: having spent so long making crystals which efficiently utilised every scrap of energy fed to them to the fullest, it was very hard indeed to make one that would use no energy at all. Most interested parties would thus quickly decide to cut their losses early.
It would take modern developments in the field of micro-crystals and electrical-gate crystals to crack the problem. In the former field, a greater understanding of the internal structures of crystals at the most minute scale gave crystal forgers insight into the causes of crystal lag, and how crystals converted their input energy into work. The latter field was the result of the ability for crystals to act as incredibly efficient electrical conductors, leading to their application in the still nascent electronics and computing machine sector. Here, of course, understanding the interaction between crystal structures and electricity was key, as was minimising the 'waste' of a crystal's energy to activate the sorts of properties that in the past were their reasons for existence.
With the rise in this general understanding of just how a magic crystal worked, the secret to energy storage in crystals would be cracked in the 160s A.S. As with many technological developments, it was the United Commonwealth which would own the invention, lavishly funded from the sizeable cheque book of the Defence Consolidated Technical Establishment, whose leadership foresaw the many electricity intensive technologies poised to enter military use.

hmm okay while i think im not going to lay my psyche and personal history bare to explain the background for this i guess i can at least give some notes about what i want from anthers story
-like i said somewhere in the tags of something, i kind of envision it like an animated tv show, maybe influenced visually by stuff like sally cruikshank's animations (ideally hand-drawn frame by frame? the idea of having it puppet-style like a generic adult cartoon is very unappealing to me)
-shes (at this point fairly tangentially) derived from a really old idea that was basically a doctor who ripoff, except i ended up making the whole story about the companion & i dont even know how to fit the doctor character into the plot anymore. the doctor character's name is aileen tho
-as far as genre goes, i like the idea of a science fiction story that largely follows fantasy conventions. theres not too much logic behind species designs beyond what i think would be cool, theres magic, and if i do things right maybe some fairytale elements
-im trying to make it episodic in a doctor who way where each episode is a completely different setting and conflict, but i also want there to be a pretty strong plot throughline since thats what i prefer in stories
-the gimmick of the worldbuilding is that rather than traveling through space/time each setting is instead a different dimension. theres a lot more to this but its only half fleshed out so i can leave it for later
#since im not really making a show my main goals are to just flesh out what id want to happen#i need to think of more settings and episode premises#but honestly i feel most drawn to character dynamics#i keep forgetting my canon ratworld crossover...#ocs#anther

I love your exploration of Minecraft mechanics in pixel imperfect it's so clever and they all make sense I want to microwave it all in my brain lskekeke is there any mechanics you have thought of but haven't had a chance to put it in a fic yet?
Thank you so much <3 I worked really hard on my worldbuilding and I'm so happy with how it came together. My strengths are in magical realism, bizarre twists and turns to attempt canon compliancy, and incredible commitment to the bit sldkfj. I'm really enjoying writing for this world and I can't wait to do more.
[ Pixels Imperfect series on AO3 for context ]
#Dog's Life spoilers + minor spoilers for Criminal Experience, but the tags probably hinted at it anyway.

Here's some stuff I haven't had the chance to delve into yet:
Soul Traits Flaring On When Flustered - I've shown Etho going into his fox traits a couple times in Dog's Life Chapter 8 (talking to Lizzie about feelings) and in "Canadian Idiot" (chewing on Joel's hand to reduce aggro urges, anxious about getting caught). His soul tail comes out and his soul ears go up. Joel's firefly soul traits also went up when he was scared during his fight with Etho in the latter story.
Usually soul traits come out under the mob-strengthening glow of the full moon. They'll also pop out when you're really flustered, startled, alert... etc. And since player souls were synced up in Double Life, that means we get gems like:
I'm working on a Traffictober piece about that actually, where Grian slips into his parrot mindset and his influence over the soul wings is so strong that every flap knocks Scar over and he keeps tripping and fumbling while fleeing mobs, so Scar's just having a great day of feeling loved and remembered all around <3
Shower Houses - It's been hinted in Dog's Life, but Grian's the only one in the New Star Station portal hub who showers regularly. Pixel people don't sweat or collect a lot of stink, so they only wash when they need to deliberately remove dirt or mods or something. Grian just washes out of habit.
People wash so rarely that there are public shower houses in New Star Station because they weren't built directly into the apartments. This is also why there have been two private conversations in Dog's Life that were held in the shower house... it's just a convenient place to go where most people don't hang out.
Onsen - This one got hinted in "Canadian Idiot," but it's funny to me... Bdubs keeps inviting Etho to the onsen. In the Pix Impf universe, you can take your skin off to show your soul underneath (so you're considerably more undressed than if you'd just pulled your regular clothes off). Bdubs and Martyn, who are both huge fans of souls, enjoy going to the onsen. Etho, who does not change his skin, keeps turning them down. Although maybe someday, because that would be a fun one-shot.
I also want to point out that most of the coupons Etho keeps on his apartment counter are fake. Bdubs makes them for him because Etho has a shopping addiction and hoards them, but... they don't have a firm currency system in New Star Station because they live in a perimeter sealed in bedrock. Bdubs just makes them because Etho likes them and sometimes he can sway Etho to do stuff with him because "Your coupons are about to expire."
Testing Positive - Tango's wife once said she "tested positive" with no context and Grian congratulated her on her pregnancy... not realizing she meant she got whitelisted on a server. It was very awkward for him. Grian fumbles around with a lot of the vocab in the Pix Impf universe but he does his best.
Soul Slots - This one came up in Criminal Experience, but hasn't shown up in anything else yet. The Between dimension's gimmick is all about souls, and in that dimension, you get one "soul slot" you can equip items to. This item will teleport to you when you move a chunk away and it will even follow you when you respawn.
Impulse has a soup thermos equipped to his soul slot. He decorates it in stickers. Every time it regenerates, it respawns with a new type of soup. Also he uses it to take out traps because he'll just hurl the thermos at things and it's big and metal and if it's open then it's full of hot soup and no one ever expects to get clonked on the head with it and it's funny to me. Sir he is literally just a guy.
In Crim, he told Mumbo he carries another thermos that's full of souls. In modern times [Crim is set about 1,000 years before Dog's Life], Impulse does favor the soul thermos over the soup one. He can't risk moving far from it, though, because it'll reset to empty if he's a chunk away from it.
Grian's Watcher Status - It is canon in Grian's lore that he became a Watcher when he left EVO; it was his way of stepping back from the series. I don't draw from Martyn's personal Eyes and Ears lore though because I wanted to put my own spin on it. In my 'verse, the Grian who was born in the Pixels Imperfect universe got swapped with the Grian who was born in my Neighborhood Watch universe, so they're both socially awkward as they fumble around each other's worlds.
[ This is also why in my image above, Grian has purple soul traits instead of blue. In the NW universe, Grian's the only one who bleeds blue instead of purple... Soul swap ]
In Dog's Life, we've seen Grian struggle his way through conversations, most recently in Chapter 11 when he kept insisting to Joel that Hermes is "just an armor stand" (while we were in Joel's POV and could clearly see that Hermes was walking around like a functioning person).
Also, Skizz literally registers as a massive jumble of code in Grian's eyes and he can only see him when he's looking at his reflection. Most of the modded players are hazy to him (Joel and Jimmy aren't much because their physical forms are still close to their soul forms, but BigB's pretty blurry). Skizz is the worst because his transition from enderman to angel is so extreme and he's got hundreds of mods on at all times. Skizz looks like a biblically accurate angel but only Grian knows it. Impulse may be just a guy but Skizz is just a winged, flaming wheel.
Grian can sort of force his vision to a lower level, which lets him see Skizz clearly enough that he can see something Skizz is holding or wearing, but it takes effort so he's gotten used to having a friend who's just... a living alphabet tornado. Grian has a very hard time fighting Skizz head on- he'll blink and shake his head and falter a lot unless he takes the time to adjust his eyes, and even then it takes a lot of his energy. He'll usually back off when he's going head to head with Skizz.
Server Defaults - By default, servers are set so that everyone has their hybrid traits and hybrid abilities (Ex: Skizz may be a modded angel, but he has an enderman soul and natural silk touch).
Server admins can adjust that, however, and scale those down or disable them almost completely (i.e. setting a server to vanilla rules, which puts everyone on an equal playing field with minor exceptions. Using Skizz as an example again, on a scaled-down server, water would still be very hot to him, but it wouldn't leave burns on his skin).
Between is a soul-themed dimension, so you're stuck with traits and can't toggle them off. Some people like to play on servers with the default settings turned up to max. There are definitely days the crew just romps around and plays with their full traits out and they just straight-up fight "all natural" because it's fun, but that's very low-stakes.
They don't do that in the Life series. Even though it's meant to be chaotic fun, it wouldn't be possible for some players. Ex: Bdubs and Martyn are phantom hybrids who have to eat souls. If you threw them in the Life series with their hybrid traits maxed out, they'd be forced to either starve to death or break the rules by attacking while they're green. Not really possible in a series with limited lives.
Phantom Feeding - Impulse (who lost his ability to pull souls out of bodies) can't play at all on servers that force those kinds of soul trait defaults unless he has someone who's willing to feed him (i.e. pull a soul out of a body and bring it to him), so he generally just doesn't play there. Skizz feeds him while they're in Between, but Impulse can't hang out in that dimension without Skizz unless someone else is there to help. If he didn't have Skizz or another feeder, he'd probably hang out around the phantom spawn temple because he'd be stuck in a starvation death loop anyway.
Phantom hybrids are flock-oriented, though, so there's usually someone to feed him... he just feels awkward asserting himself and it's easier to ask Skizz. When Skizz knows he'll be away, he'll usually prep Impulse's soul thermos. It's just awkward to do in advance because it inconveniences other people if they get left in the thermos too long. Can't get cycled back through the portal hub if you're not getting digested, y'know. It's more of a weekend prep situation, not so much an "I'm gone for a week" situation.
Bdubs does save souls for Martyn on days that Martyn's hunting ground is empty. Martyn and Bdubs may fight a lot, but they're still flockmates and Bdubs does care.
Default Trait Shift - In the Between dimension, the phase of the moon you respawn under influences how much you show your hybrid traits (a nod to the game mechanic that strengthens mobs under the full moon). Ergo, this snippet of Etho getting his ears:
There’s a rattling noise in the kitchen. Scar leans back. It’s the doorknob that leads into the apartment hall. The door slams inward a second later. A fuming, scrawny fox hybrid man looms like a silver wraith in the dark. For half a second, Scar’s not sure it’s even Etho. This figure’s got the same puffy tail, but he’s also got fox ears that stand quivering and tall on his head. Then he remembers Etho just got his vessel reset. The moon is waxing; the percentage of visible hybrid traits he shows is higher now than it was the last time he spawned.
In the example above, Etho respawned with his arctic fur, but it's fully possible for him to respawn as ginger instead.
iJevin is the poster child for this- he looks a lot like a slime because he was last respawned on a full moon night (as opposed to someone like PiglinMyNose who's also a slime hybrid, but shows drippy face traits and not the natural slime coloration). When Jevin respawns, he can come back as either blue or green, and he'll come back looking more humanoid unless it's a full moon.
Cleo's most common form is a waxing moon spawn. She gets more stitches, decorative injuries, and flowers during the waxing and full moon, but if she respawns under a new moon then she defaults to her "HumanCleo" skin. Still a zombie, just comes in various flavors of "freshly undead and basically human" to "oh, they're a corpse who falls apart easily."
Soul-Sharing - Soul-sharing is a nod to Season 8 of Hermitcraft when Mumbo ate Grian's soul (and is apparently still sharing it since he's been wearing the soul-sharing skin throughout Season 9 and even in his non-Hermitcraft content).
In the Pixels Imperfect universe, Grian is a parrot hybrid and Mumbo is a wandering trader. When they blended souls, Mumbo started growing wings and getting hazy glimpses at things that Grian's Watcher eyes can see (so he can sort of understand how blurry Skizz is, but not to the same degree Grian sees him).
Grian got wandering trader robes, the ability to make binding deals, and a bit of inventory space (something you don't normally have in Between).
During Dog's Life, when Grian and Etho were smuggling SnifferMyFeet across the portal hub, they put Sniff in wandering trader robes and Etho's like "I'm afraid to ask why Grian has Mumbo's robes in his closet." They actually weren't Mumbo's- they're Grian's half of the soul-sharing. Sometimes Grian wears them; I just haven't found a good place to show it yet.
Impulse and Skizz are soul-sharing for medical reasons. My short story Criminal Experience opens with Impulse as a phantom hybrid and ends with him getting his soul wrecked because he'd do anything for Skizz, even at the cost of himself. Skizz would do anything for Impulse, including sharing his soul to keep Impulse alive <3
Imp and Skizz's bond is even tighter than Grian's and Mumbo's, and it's a reference to their Naked & Scared series where they regularly share hearts. Impulse and Skizz constantly feel each other's pain and they have to manually turn off their heart-sharing when they join new servers. Sometimes they forget (or just don't want to) and continue sharing.
Skizz was actually secondhand soulbound to Bdubs during Double Life, but he can't bring himself to talk about it with Impulse (a nod to IRL Skizz talking about how he hasn't watched Double Life because he knows it would wreck him emotionally). Mumbo was secondhand bonded to Scar, but he didn't feel it as intensely as Skizz did.
Impulse's soul is in tatters right now. He can't really do phantom things anymore (like pull souls out of bodies... although he can eat them if another phantom hybrid brings him one), so Skizz keeps them fed when they're in the Between dimension. Skizz [born an enderman hybrid] can filter feed from the void and he can also eat souls now. If he hadn't modded giant angel wings on himself, he'd have phantom wings.
"Can't Impulse just eat the soup in his thermos-" Not in Between; he's naturally an anivore, so when he's in the soul-themed dimension, he can only get nutrients from souls.
"Then why does he have-" Because he's petty, next question.
Since sharing with Skizz, Impulse can't tolerate water or eye contact as well as he used to, but not to the crippling degree it used to affect Skizz. He also got Skizz's ability to toggle silk touch on, but only when he's on-server (since you can't move blocks in Between unless you follow certain worldbuilding rules like having a command star or teaming up with a dragon) and only if that server allows it.
Also, Impulse sleeps in the same bed as Skizz and his wife and they literally just have to deal with this because he gets agitated and doesn't like sleeping alone... He curls up at their feet and we'll see this in the opening chapter of Dog's Life Session 3.
I also have a Traffictober I'm working on - "Like Newlyweds Do" - where Impulse tries to adjust to sleeping in the same bed as Bdubs during Double Life (and Bdubs, the king of comfortable sleep, is horrified that Impulse doesn't like pillows). Not a very cuddly wedding night... but they still love each other sdfklj.
Impulse doesn't sleep well alone (even worse when Skizz isn't on the server) and he'll usually try to sleep on someone else's bed instead of by himself. I definitely remember him respawning in Bdubs' bed instead of his own during the Soup Group rebellion arc, which is hilarious. Oh to be a clingy yet touch-averse guy who has issues being married to a man who betrayed him in a past life but also you just crawl into his bed so you have somewhere safe to sleep.
For Hermitcraft 8 and 9, Impulse's go-to person to sleep on is Pearl (or Gem when Pearl's away for time zone reasons), but he's not picky. He just struggles to be alone because your soul flares up when you're asleep and he doesn't have a full soul, so it sends his body into a panic unless there's someone nearby he trusts.
I like to think these bed-sharing habits also influenced how he played 3rd Life and why he successfully schmoozed his way into so many alliances. You can absolutely confuse Martyn into thinking you're a close ally if you sway him into letting you sleep on his bed "for medical reasons." Scar probably let Impulse stay with him one time, but Grian would have thrown him out so fast, ha ha.
[ More under the cut <3 ]
Corrupted Player Souls - Scar has a lot of soul dysphoria over whether he's an allay or a vex, because when he looks at himself in the mirror, he can't tell. He usually identifies as a vex, but I'm working on a Traffictober piece where he turns to Grian for comfort and Grian's flustered because he has no idea what Scar wants to hear. Awkward desert duo attempted comfort, my beloved.
Sniff has a bit of dysphoria over his corruption too, but his is more along the lines of feeling so glitched out and weightless that he regularly forgets he has a physical body (which we saw in "No One Likes the Opening Band" where he slammed into a wall thinking he could go through it and died from kinetic energy). Speaking of-
Cam Accounts - There's a distinct difference between what camera accounts can biologically do vs. what players can biologically do. Cam accounts can go into spectator mode, defy gravity, pass through blocks, and they can see colors that players can't. TwoMuchGrian likes to hover over Grian without flapping his wings just because he likes to brag about how little energy it takes to float (while Grian is forced to flap to stay up). However, cam accounts can't use commands (so they can never have command stars) and they can't create their own servers.
The IRL free-cam mod lets you pass through blocks, but in the Pixels Imperfect universe, only cam accounts can pass through blocks. Player accounts can enter free-cam by roaming around in their glowy mob soul form, but they still have to go around blocks (Tango, for example, has a specific path he has to take in order to get inside Decked Out and watch people). Player accounts aren't able to go into true spectator mode, and any time they do (such as when they're ghosts watching people at the end of the final Life series episode), this is interpreted as them being in free-cam.
Players always have to deal with some kind of collision and gravity effect, and it's generally a very bad thing when they glitch through stuff (Ex: Etho was so fritzed out when his fox soul started taking over in "Canadian Idiot" that he glitched through the deck of The Relation for a second before he adjusted).
Martyn Eating Clothes - I did show Martyn eating his sleeves in Dog's Life Chapter 6 (and he makes another reference in Chapter 11), but we haven't really delved into what's going on there. Martyn is a phantom hybrid, but Bdubs [the flock captain] doesn't let him feed on other players' souls very often [feeding meaning "this person's player went AFK so we have to log them out and send them to their offline server"; everyone comes back later and they're fine, but this is what phantom hybrids do].
Bdubs keeps Martyn hungry and gives Martyn a designated hunting ground that's Just For Martyn, which pretty much guarantees that Martyn will always eat people who wander into it. Specifically, Martyn's hunting area is the entire perimeter of New Star Station (as in, the edge rim) so Martyn's always chasing people who try to leave the station.
Martyn's not digesting cloth, but he's eating the code that connects people's clothing to their soul and/or player energy (There's an upcoming scene where he eats Scar's hat, too). If you just handed him an old shirt or a spare skin, he can't eat that because it's not currently attached to anyone and flowing with soul energy. He has to eat people specifically, or else the closest thing to a person he can get, which sometimes means chewing on his own shirt because his own clothing checks all the boxes for "attached to a person."
There are lots of twisted politics involved with Martyn's designated hunting ground being the perimeter... When he's in the Between dimension, Martyn can't gain energy from physical food, so he has to hunt people. He's always hungry and due to phantom flock politics, he has little choice but to play his role in preventing people from leaving the portal hub, which is exactly what Scott wants because Scott's so incredibly paranoid about the portal hub getting discovered by the anarchy players who've overrun outside world.
Cleo, who likes to dig because they're a zombie, is constantly trying to break through the bedrock wall around New Star Station. Huge conflict... because Martyn's insufferably curious. Martyn's constantly fighting the urge to eat Cleo and instead he just tries watching and talking to them. Martyn keeps bending the rules for Cleo because he's a little sweeter on them than he'd like to admit (hashtag it's really important to me that everyone vibes with their soulmates even outside Double Life... soulmates for a reason even if they don't like admitting it).
Which is where we get this upcoming scene at the end of Dog's Life Session 2:
“I don’t care. I have Cleo now.” “S’cuse me?” Jimmy cocks his head. When Scott stares at him, looking insulted, Jimmy says (tentatively), “How… how does that work when they’re blowing holes in your wall? Aren’t you the mayor? Or is the mayor bit just a bunch of roleplay too? I thought it was serious, but I really don’t know anything about politics.” “… When they’re what?” “Oh, that’s someone else.” I’ve messed up; I’ve really messed something up. “That’s someone else, I think. I just saw them. I mean, BigB’s always talking, you know?” “Martyn’s on wall-watch.” Scott says it like he’s holding a knife against a battered Jimmy’s throat. Scott’s staring harsh and furious, like he’d very much like to lunge across the bed, grab Jimmy’s jacket collar in his hands, and slam his head against the wall. “And Martyn’s always hungry; Bdubs keeps him hungry on purpose, just for this. If someone’s trying to find a way through, Martyn would put a stop to that so quick. Martyn wouldn’t… Martyn… Cleo would never ally with Martyn. That’s not… I’ll talk to him, though.”
We love stupidly complicated animal people politics and we love young people in positions of power making decisions out of paranoia and panic <3
I actually have several pieces I want to do about Cleo and Martyn in the portal hub, especially in regards to the bedrock wall, but I keep hesitating over whether that's appropriate for my Traffictober series because... it's not while they're on the Life series server and also it's so incredibly specific to this worldbuilding. But they are one-shots that draw specifically from Cleo and Martyn's Double Life dynamic so I guess that still counts.
I just really love dumb Zombiewood drama and I love them screwing each other over on accident even when they're just trying to hang out and be friends slkdfj. Them...
Creator Bleed / Emotion Bleed / Martyn's Sync - Creator traits that bleed over into the characterization of their little pixel character are called creator bleed. For example, Mumbo has two llamas which symbolically represent Creator Mumbo's love for biking.
Emotion bleed is when our little pixel friends can feel strong emotions through their sync-cords- for example, Joel and Lizzie can sense their creators are married because they can feel strong affection through their sync-cords and figured out it was happening at the same time.
Martyn is unique in that he does not have a sync-cord. He struggles with self-doubt, wondering if he wasn't a fun character to play and his creator abandoned him, so he lives his life constantly trying to be a fun person to play with and he takes it super personally if people don't want to be around him (so the Double Life break-up hit harder than he admits to).
Martyn not having a sync is a reference to Creator Martyn being super involved with lore, with the implication being that Creator Martyn wanted to put his little guy through The Horrors so the sync was snapped to maintain strict emotional distance. In Pixels Imperfect, this also means Martyn can pick up on things most people can't, which is a nod to his Life series episodes where the Watchers speak to him but not to others.
Besides Grian, Martyn is the only character in Pixels Imperfect who knows what kisses are. He's "out of sync" and gets influenced from the universe at large. It's like he fell out of Creator Martyn's boat and can pop his head both above and below the water, as opposed to both of them sailing on the surface together. Character Martyn uses certain words that the other characters don't, so we get stuff like this fun exchange [Dog's Life, end of Session 3]:
“I don’t know, G,” because he’s running out of doors to hide behind. Martyn fidgets with the axe. Grian’s eyes snap over. It’s exactly the chance Martyn needs to drop his gaze. “I mean… You’re forcing it, aren’t you?” “How do you mean?” “You know exactly what I’m talking about. The others aren’t like us. Their natures are ingrained; basically predetermined. They can’t go against their nature. It’s… It’s like BigB and Ren drifting back together like satellites once you’re out of the equation. They paralleled each other long before Double Life, Grian. You disrupted the storyline, but not the code of the game, and they’ll keep circling each other instead of you.” He fiddles with the axe again. He can see from its reflection that Grian’s getting irritated; the purple glow is all he needs. He’d rather not look him in the eye. “I just… I don’t know. If they don’t act on their emotions first, then maybe we shouldn’t flirt with them. They’re just following code; they’re just part of the game.” “We’re part of the game. We have code.” “It’s different. We know things.
Do with that what you will.
Calendars - I like to think that there are multiple calendar systems: one for when you're in the Between dimension and once when you're on server. There's a scene in Dog's Life Chapter 11 where Joel tells Lizzie "It's Wednesday; I'm not going anywhere" and I almost took that out because technically, the on-server Wednesday and the Between Wednesday wouldn't line up so that doesn't make sense.
The official Minecraft mechanic has the moon set to an 8-day cycle. My personal view is that the on-server calendar would have an 8-day week and instead of using day names like Monday and Tuesday, everyone tracks days by the moon phase.
However, calendars are a huge pain not just to worldbuild, but to convey to readers in a way that makes sense and doesn't come across as super info dumpy. I'm probably going to leave it and let them use words like Wednesday and treat weeks as 7-day cycles, but in my heart... in my heart, it's an 8-day week and they have moon day names like Waxnight and Newnight. Maybe someday I'll go back and edit those names in, or maybe I'll just keep that in my pocket for a personal project, who knows...
Admin Inexperience - My draft for "There Are Many Benefits to Being Corporeal" was originally going to cover an adventure between SnifferMyFeet and PiglinMyNose as they try to craft ice cream, which meant going out to get ice (and there was a big discussion about what Pig can and can't touch because he's technically a camera account).
I ended up scrapping all that because it was getting long-winded and it was a little too much effort for these two silly side characters if I wasn't even sure I was going to be happy with it, so... I let them make cake instead, which actually is craftable, so that was much less adventurous and mechanics info-dumpy.
Anyway I wanted to point this out because Sniff is the server admin for their server, but he's a newbie account who doesn't know what he's doing, so I had scenes like this:
SnifferMyFeet was blown up by [Admin Inexperience] PiglinMyNose: You okay? SnifferMyFeet: ASDSLKSJF That’s the only response he gets. [...] SnifferMyFeet was blown up by [Admin Inexperience] Sniff lies flat on his back, surrounded by woodchips, puddles, and melon rinds. Pig circles overhead a few times, swooping lower and lower on every pass. He finally lands with a pat on top of the bed. He tucks in the canary and vex wings. Sniff parts his fingers long enough to glower at him. “I don’t understand. This is so unfair. Grian and Joel both know how to use commands.” PiglinMyNose: It takes practice PiglinMyNose: And you’re not Grian and Joel PiglinMyNose: You’re Sniff :)
Sniff references this scene in Dog's Life when he talks about his relationship with Pig and how Pig was there to help him get clean every time he blew up. They're friends. Also we got to see the same vibe of Pig comforting Sniff in "No One Likes the Opening Band" so that was self-indulgent and fun <3
Some other Sniff and Pig highlights from the Corporeal draft include:
“Put me back into camera mode. You’re the admin.” Sniff’s eyes move to the glowing five-point star on the underside of his hand. It’s the command block star, and one Pig has never worn himself. He waits, lightly bouncing on his toes, as Sniff stares blankly at his wrist. “So… so an outside person has to do that to you?” “Yeah. You’re the admin.” “… And it’s all up to me to bring you back if you decide to be a player again? Like, you can do nothing? You might just be stuck as a camera forever if I don’t?” “I trust you,” Pig assures him, which sends fireworks up Sniff’s face. He quickly brushes off the loose pixels, but his hands are shaking. They’re shaking bad. “Um…” Sniff brings a fingertip to each of Pig’s temples. “Pig, I dub thee a camera.” The snort bubbles up before Pig can stop it. “Not like that!” [...] “But doesn’t that take away your voice? I don’t think I can… I don’t know, Pig. That’s a little messed up.” “Sniff, it’s okay.” Pig grasps Sniff’s wrist, guiding his cupped hand to his cheek. “I want to do this.”
[...]
Pig frowns, then projects his thoughts into the space around him. PiglinMyNose: Oh, that’s different “I knew it,” Sniff blurts. “I messed it up! I’ll put you back.” PiglinMyNose: No, no! It’s fine. It’s just that I’m a slime soul PiglinMyNose: These aren’t my slime wings Pig gives them a few experimental flaps. PiglinMyNose: Not that that’s unusual, I guess PiglinMyNose: Slime hybrids absorb traits from those around them PiglinMyNose: This canary wing is from Jimmy. The vex one is from Scar “What the heck is a canary?” Sniff asks, pulling out his sword. He glances around, lip trembling, like he expects some sort of brute to lumber from the undergrowth. PiglinMyNose: It’s a modded bird “What’s a bird?” PiglinMyNose: We’ll talk later PiglinMyNose: Practice spawning blocks PiglinMyNose: You’ve got parrot spawn eggs and stuff too PiglinMyNose: I’ll be back soon :)
Sob... they care so much about each other... I just love the ancient and experienced cam account boy and his new best friend, the incredibly temperamental newbie who has body dysphoria because he got possessed for two weeks sldkfj
Honorable mention to this snippet:
PiglinMyNose: Can you poof? Sniff glances around the area, then back at Pig. “Too scared. What happens if I poof inside a tree? I saw Cleo almost suffocate inside a tree once.” PiglinMyNose: You will respawn :) “You’re not going to even try to rescue me?” PiglinMyNose: I’m a camera “I think I’ll walk, thanks. Maybe later.”
They really are just Like That... Sniff and Pig, my beloveds...
So, those are some mechanics I haven't talked about yet!
Also, here are some of my favorite worldbuilding details that already have made it in (#Dog's Life spoilers up to Chapter 11 + references to my Traffictober one-shots)
In the Pixels Imperfect universe, no one has blood. This means they can't blush. They also can't cry because they don't have tear ducts. Both of these body reactions will make them spark and fritz pixels instead. However, they do have lungs (because breathing is an official game mechanic) and they have spit (because llamas can spit, so therefore spit exists in the game). It's an interesting worldbuilding switch for me because when I write my Fairly OddParents 'fics, the fae have blood and tears but they don't have lungs, ha ha. Massive brain switch I have to do when picking out the body language for these two worlds. Technically they don't have genetics, nor does evolution exist in this world. Why did Jimmy imply blaze and ghast have a common ancestor when he shouldn't have any idea what that means? idk, I was aware of the irony but it was funny to me sldkjf
Not a mechanic, but a canon part of the worldbuilding for the Pix Impf universe is that Grian built a Mumbo shrine on his AFK server. It's a reference to things like the escape room video where he just straight-up built a creepy Mumbo room because he missed him, and also he gets the itch to connect with Mumbo sometimes because they share a soul. I just think it's funny.
Anytime he's in Between (i.e. off a server), Martyn has constant vertigo. He tries to push through it, but it's always kind of draining his mind. This is a reference to creator Martyn's personal lore, where his character is constantly falling until he wakes up in a new Life series.
Joel's hair stripe is coded on. He changes color by tweaking his code (and/or messaging Scott to change his code). If he were to use flower dye, it would wipe out every time he leaves a server because you more or less can't take stuff from on-server into Between. Technically he could take tiny drips of it, but nothing useful (same reason you can still have scratches, dirt, and splinters but you can't take a full wood block).
Calendar times are super messed up. I use the official Minecraft conversions, so each Life series play session is 9 in-game days [3 hours IRL] with a bit of spill over the sides for resource gathering and clean-up. Time moves differently in the Between dimension vs. the Overworld (and that's not even accounting for how hard it is to track time in the Nether and End). When I write my FOP content, I'm incredibly nitpicky over the timeline, right down to making the effort to assign every single episode for all 11 seasons to a calendar day just so my fanfic timeline would be "perfect." It's hilarious to go from that to this where I deliberately make no attempt to match the years up because everyone's personal timelines are scrambled from jumping in and out of servers. I know there are timeline inconsistencies and I just choose not to fix them because I think it's part of the charm of this particular world. Yeah Grian's only been here 250 years, yeah Scar's somehow known him since he got here but also only for 200 years, yeah Martyn arrived after Grian and has somehow been here for 300 years, what's your point? One of them spent longer on-server and one of them spent longer in Between so it screwed up their mental math. Also BigB and Cleo were simultaneously married for 4 years but also 6 years but also less than 24 hours. Yeah Double Life lasted for a year but also for 6 weeks but also the gap between LimLife and Dog's Life is somehow only a few months despite it being a larger gap than Double Life's entire run-time. They literally just live like this. Time isn't real in the Pix Impf world.
The admin for a server will always have a command star on their hand, which gives them the ability to use admin powers. The Between dimension is not a server and the only way to get commands in that dimension is to slay a spawn dragon... or slay whoever currently has the star. Only two people have command stars in Between. One of them is Scott [who has the Allay Dragon's star] and the other is Herobrine [who has the Cluckshroom Dragon star]. My favorite joke is that Herobrine doesn't even do anything in Dog's Life - he's just chilling in the background lore - but there's this creepy reputation associated with having a command star and Scott just has to deal with it. There's this super messed-up power dynamic anxiety in general with "Scott is super on his toes because anyone could just straight-up kill him for his command star, and the Allay Dragon is dead so Scott will perma-die instead of respawning like everyone else" and it's. very dark and fun for me. He literally can't get rid of that command star even if he wanted to because someone would have to kill him and that's too much of a risk.
The characters who are anarchy refugees can use metaphors related to things outside the portal hub (I think Lizzie used syrup once and Etho described SnifferMyFeet as a meerkat). Scar's worldview is much more limited because he's never been outside New Star Station and his metaphors reflect this.
Generally, mobs are referred to as "it" and only gendered on occasion. I actually thought long and hard about sexual dimorphism before deciding that yes, when Jimmy started taking on chicken traits in Dog's Life, he needed hen feathers, not rooster colors, because all the Minecraft chickens are hens. Mobs can come in slightly different colors (Dogs, cats, horses can all have domestic patterns - Lizzie being a calico cat in Empires Season 2 is a good example of this making sense in universe, as is Skizz's mod that makes dogs look like his IRL dog) but something like rooster coloration is too extreme. My Neighborhood Watch universe does have sexual dimorphism, so they breed cows with ravagers and they also have roosters. I actually have to keep words like "rooster" and "bull" out of the Pix Impf universe because no one except Grian would know what those words mean.
BigB used to be an Illusioner before he got moth mods. He lost his ability to see through blocks and he's kind of grumpy about it. I play him as a nosy guy largely because of the Nosy Neighbors schtick he had going on in LimLife, but also because his moth mods give him incredible hearing and he was just plain nosy because of his Illusioner code even way back in the day. It's weird to live 2000 years being able to see through blocks and then that gets taken away from you.
In Dog's Life Chapter 11, Grian brushes loose pixels off the bed and then dumps them in a jar before he comes back to bed. Those pixels can be reused to rebuild your body and it's the same wavelength as what Joel did in "Canadian Idiot" when he cut some of Etho's hair and used it to rebuild his chewed-off fingers.
Also in "Canadian Idiot," Joel talked about how you don't want to use lava as a fuel source inside a tight space or else you'll make your build smell like sulfur. I really wanted to give the characters whose strengths lie in building some things that they knew more about compared to the redstoners, who traditionally prioritize efficiency over aesthetic and comfort. Everybody's smart in their own way.
In "Shack Up Like It's Summer 2022," Tango accidentally washed plates in an infinite water source block and then he had to spend time getting the crumbs out because... he ruined the drinking water.
In "Dog Biscuits," Ren put a cover on the crafting table before he pushed it down. It had measurements on it and the cover just keeps stuff from splattering when you squish it. Ren's not sloppy; he does his work with attention to detail.
One more detail from Dog's Life to wrap things up, but Impulse has actually been dealing with weird brain influence for more of Dog's Life than he hasn't been... it just didn't get brought to the forefront until Chapter 11 because other people were also having problems. As early as Chapter 4, Skizz noticed he was acting off. Later at Jimmy's party, Impulse stood to the side and kept rubbing his eyes. Over the next few chapters, several people note that Impulse is being "unhelpful" in texts because he's only asking about where Bdubs is. Bdubs even straight-up told Etho that Impulse tried to fight him but they just brush it off because they don't think it's important, and then you get midway through Chapter 11 and all of a sudden it's Very Obvious that Impulse is Messed Up and no one noticed until now, and now everyone is locked in their own servers and none of the programmers can reach Impulse and look at his code, so Impulse is just suffering (TM) for the next month or so that he's locked in offline status. There's definitely a worldbuilding thing going on about why Impulse specifically is suffering, and we'll delve into it later... Idk, I just really like how it came together, with Impulse getting overlooked... I think it's funny. I love Impulse; he's my favorite.
Thank you for enjoying my worldbuilding and my work! I love writing for this series and I'm so happy to hear you like it <3

Some au ideas for fun while I wait on requests
Note: I'm also involving some of my rottmnt ocs in all of these so I don't care about people who whine about oc x canon lol.
And hooo boy if you can read through all of this, treat your self to a cool beverage or treat because I accidentally put a lot of info ; v ;
Magical Girl Theme
A/N: During the early days when the series was in its season 1, I accidentally made cool lore for my rottmnt ocs and created some small scenarios for them in their toyhouse info. And it eventually influence some stuff for my original worldbuilding but, I still have rottmnt rotbrain because this iteration really inspired me despite its series' current status.
Timeline: A few days taking place after the Donnie's Gifts episode. April heard rumors of an abandoned metro where some girls and women travel through a sparkling subway train. And most of the footage is something close to your typical magical girl transformations and blurry fight scenes. She saves Joyce, a jellyfish mermaid themed magical girl, who is unfortunately recovering from a month by an oozesquito bite. But, accidentally interrupts the training. Luckily the mentor supervising Joyce saw April as a new friend to her. And offered the idea if April was comfortable being another magical girl in training. However, April rejected the offer. (being busy with stuff that happened in canon.) A few months pass, and the two met friends with another oozesquito victim. Laverne, a leatherback sea turtle mutant, who was intended to be Joyce's rival and a witch that passed with flying colors. Who also has a cloaking charm like Sunita.
Timeline Continued (Because it would have been one long paragraph orz): Sometime after April gets her mystic bat from that one Witch Town episode. She starts to reflect on it more and fully decides to try the magical girl gig as a part time job. Also thanks toJoyce and Laverne cheering her on. And the two who became best buddies with the rest of the turtles. Despite a certain purple turtle's distaste for all things magic related. She still visits [tbn magical girl themed metro] after defeating the Krang in the from the movie. Since she's currently busy with college and stuff.
Slightly theming her outfit based off of Mayhem. And the possible super powerful form from an outfit Karai gave to her. And I still adore the heart afro doodles from a concept art from that same WT episode so I'm gonna try to add that as well!
Sunita and Cassandra eventually tag along and girl's night shenanigans are more chaotic then ever.
The turtles are mainly supporting characters however Donnie secretly works part time at [tbn mg metro] after the events of defeating the Krang. He previously helped to make a magical tech bracelet that manages stress and other healthy coping habits for Joyce. She struggled to control her electric powers and 'this whole situation' until nearing the end of season 1. This and the events of WT episode sort of changed his approach to mystic powers. Especially with how he developed ninpo after defeating the Shredder and still has a lot learn despite Leo's safe return from trapping the Krang back into the prison dimension.
Two sentence summary: I slowly saw this iteration of April as a magical girl and with how I did that same theme for my two main rottmnt ocs so... She's gonna be one in this au because I want her to have more fun and it balances out the bad luck she usually has in canon!
2. Dredge (that one eldritch fishing game)
A/N: My renewed interest in the upcoming iron rig dlc and I saw a bit of a few others' perspective with this game and making a rise!au with it. But, I tend to be more about light hearted stuff. However, some of the eldritch theme is still there. Just in a different context.
Some minor spoilers to the game's areas and mention of the enemies there
However, its the guys being the fishermen and April working along side the traveling merchant npc.
I'm still using cloaking brooches because the turtles and Splinter are still slightly cursed to be mutants. As result of some previous Hamato clan family members following the hooded figures' teachings.
Joyce, formerly a human, who wanted to seek revenge at the stellar basin's eldritch creature. That killed her dad on a dredging trip, he was forced to go because of dumb family members' overconfidence. Strongly believing that they can kill the beast for fame and fortune.
She dies but, still full of rage before jelly bombs overwhelm her. She reincarnates as a parhelion jellyfish mutant mermaid with no recollection of her past.
Leo got a little bored being stuck with solo night fishing (mainly trawling duty) and thought it would be a good idea to go fast. Hoping to beat Donnie with at least one aberration he hasn't found yet.
He did get one but, heard a deep growls from large trawl net. That caused a few ripples passing by the boat. Met with eyes that glared back at him. On the verge of baring her fangs and full intent to drag him down to the basin abyssal depths. Should he be bold enough to attempt to cut the heavy duty trawl net. To ensure she's in safe hands and he has no intention on hurting her.
Cut to Splinter being tired of his sons, arguing over mermaid curses and other similar superstitions.
While Splinter tries to apologize, Joyce gets a brief headache with a vision from the past. That lasts for a few seconds and shows he and her dad stayed best friends after parting ways from Gale Cliffs. She slightly softens her gaze and eats the meal Mikey prepared for her before diving back into the sea.
Eventually, Joyce slowly becomes smitten by Leo's goofy yet thoughtful attitude towards her.
Donnie manages to make a necklace that acts as a telepathic translator from a few spare research parts. That's also waterproof so that she can finally speak clearly. He still taught her how to sign and write before the device was fully completed.
Raph and Leo are mostly likely to do night fishing but, at the cost of a heavy fine of the damaged turtle boat. Struggling to keep afloat that makes Donnie fake cry a lot.
Mikey accidentally befriends a wandering hooded figure (Laverne, under her hood has additional four eyes, as a result of eating aberration fish and became a leatherback sea turtle mutant)
She doesn't speak in the same manner as the other hooded figures or want specific fish. But, just in more simple questions like "Have you met other people who dressed like me?" and "What was it like exploring the areas around them? " (And gave him a book that helped with a 10% increase towards more trawling exclusive fish)
His brothers used to be wary of her until she was fully fitted to check out the pale reach region. With her own fishing wader and learning the layout of the area ahead of time to assist Mikey on the journey.
She only eats a few aberrations because she had dreams of timelines of a different version of herself in a much happy environment. She's slightly envious of that but, doesn't regret living at the present with how lively Mikey and his family are.
April is another traveling merchant who just got her license. And knew the turtle fam as childhood friends. Still acts like the oldest sister to them. She likes fishing trips around Twisted Strand And Devil's Spine. She also keeps the aberration fishing equipment and still a bit of a thrill seeker during night fishing. However, knows when to stop after seeing those crows stealing a supply of fish in her or the turtle's boat. And other high panic enemies that appear out of nowhere.
One sentence summary: Making my rottmnt ocs go through the eldritch horror and dread but, the turtle fam are very nice so its worth it to keep living for them.
3. Dave the Diver
A/N: Sort of the same deal with dredge but I already finished the crossover dlc to 100% (still haven't finished the kaiju codex) but, despite some bad boss fights. I still had a good time with it.
Some minor spoilers about the main game
The restaurant already went through repairs from an plot story earthquake
Bancho Sushi gets hits a turtle shaped aquatic vehicle when the trio attempt to park the boat in place. With the turtle tank causing significant damage after the recent repairs.
Donnie's silently fuming while Raph apologizes for the mess.
Dave doesn't get mad at them and allows the turtles to dive and help with the sushi business. Only one of them will usually tag along with him because he doesn't like the thought of putting all those kids in danger.
The turtles have one good perk but, at the cost of something bad.
- Raph: can carry more stuff but, the harpoon gun does 5% less damage (even when fully graded it still affects it)
- Leo: can easily get away from annoying aggressive enemies but, oxygen goes away even faster at around 5%
- Donnie: can make any random consumable from Cobra's shop but, takes 5% more damage
- Mikey: can get 3 ingredients from cooking posts but, only prefers using tranquilizer weapons or the steel net gun
Leo used to help Senor Hueso during closing time as extra help to clean up. So some of that experience is paying off. He's usually best at serving than cooking. His special skills are cleaning master and irresistible charm because he's the face man.
Raph feels a bit intimidated by the small space and frequently apologized to the other staff members he accidentally bumps into. And felt more comfortable getting ingredients and managing the farm and its fish counterpart along side Donnie or Mikey. His special skills are tip master and dispatch master.
Mikey doesn't really find Bancho that intimidating and very excited to work with him. He also becomes fast friends with Dave and Maki. He's slightly decent at serving along with dispatch but, excels at cooking. His special skills are cooking++ and ingredient prep expert.
Donnie prefers diving for ingredients or supplies scattered around the Blue Hole. He's very neutral towards Duff but, very much in awe at enhancing weapons to their full potential. Including keeping track of the idiver upgrades and other apps on him at all times. However, he eventually warmed up to managing the fish farm and cooking along side with Mikey. Sometimes glaring at customers who leave dirty dishes *cough* party event guests *cough*. His specials skills are ingredient prep expert and drink serving.
April accidentally applies for a staff job right after Yoshie reports in for the new staff along side Kyoko (who's the first staff member you get in game but, this ain't about her.) I'm gonna go off topic but, she's gonna be the best one in terms of serving and dispatch. (given how terrible her luck as been in the show) And she gets the same special skills as El Nino: drinking serving master and cleaning master. Because canonically she has more job experience compared to the turtles.
Joyce and Laverne are sea people bored of the village life. And grew curious about Dave and the turtles who saved Ramo's life from one of the bosses. They sneak out on a multiple of times and just chill with the three turtles who aren't exploring with Dave. Also don't do that tedious build the trust side quest shit and they already hate Suwam's cowardly attitude. Laverne and Donnie are currently testing in secret of a portal system that would help with night time diving. Joyce sometimes delivers Mima's dumplings to Tsuchi. And eventually does the same for the turtles and Dave. (mostly in the medium depths or midway into the shallows territory because she heard of the one pink dolphin who got trapped in a trawling net. And only feels safe traveling with Laverne, Dave, or any of the turtles escorting her. Luckily she brings spare shells that carry oxygen. so its not that annoying compared to most escort missions) (The portal system is great but its so tedious climbing up BH Depths then to BH Medium Depth and finally BH Shallows. idk let me have this lol)
A few sentences summary: idk Dona who happens to be a leatherback sea turtle has a funny reference to the ninja turtles from a text box choices. I'm expanding that further with my favorite iteration of the ninja turtles. So its definitely more goofy compared to the other two aus on here.
#magical girl au#dredge au#dave the diver au#this is the first time I put in some effort into these#still not confident about posting this on the main tag but#I'll eventually expand on one post in more detail and some sketches with each au but for now its fine

ya'll asked for geography, so u get geography!!! of space, lmao. let's start with the basics. but here's my version of the magical dimension!
details under cut! (also do clic on the picture to see stuff better tunglr ruined the quality as always)
note: the size of the planets is very indicative, and just to make the map more readable.
● THE SUNS ●
the magical dimension originally had five suns that then became four after the end of the fairy-witch wars (long story short: one exploded).
the main suns are the ones you can see in the center, called the dragon's head and the dragon's tail, the biggest and the second biggest (in that order), called this way after the great dragon. then there's the elf sun, the third biggest, whose name comes from the people of graynor. and then the smallest one, called the phoenix sun, after the shadow phoenix.
the fifth one used to be the second smallest one, called the leviathan sun. it used to be right in the center of oroz, fallat and rot (now the forbidden ring).
● THE RINGS ●
there are eight rings in the magical dimension, each one with their own unique planets with similar (but different) characteristics. think culturally about them as a continent! the forbidden ring is the only one thats unhabitated, as its conditions are unlivable and the absence of a sun makes it impossibile for life to return.
🡲 light ring
the light ring is "8" shaped and goes around the tail and head suns, and it intersects with the magix ring and the harmonic ring. the name is for obvious reasons: lots of suns and lots of light!
the planets in the light ring are:
solaria: known as the planet of stars, suns, moons, and celestial bodies in general. not pictured: the moons celeste and lumenia and a third, smaller sun in its orbit, called radius.
domino: the abandoned planet of the great dragon, of its fire. its population and royal family were wiped out not long ago by an unknown evil power, and its once beautiful deserts and cities are now icy wastelands. not pictured: its moon pyros, known for its dragon population, which migrated from domino during its fall.
koria: known for being the headquarters of the order of the paladins and its school, the malacoy academy. not pictured: its other two orbiting suns, ramiel and samael, and moons, uriel and zephon.
🡲 the nature ring
the nature ring orbits around the elf sun and intersects with the steel ring. the name comes from the nature based power of (most of) the people of the planets, and their incredibile, lush, and lively natural wonders.
the planets in the nature ring are:
lynphea: known for its tall trees on which its people live, its giant animals and insects, and the enormous forests. not pictured: its second sun helianthus and its moon ipomea.
andros: covered 90% by salt water, it's the planet where merpeople live, along with a human population spread over small islands and archipelagos. it's connected through a magical space waterfall to its orbiting nano-planet, au haru (not pictured here). not pictured: its moon seantis.
romulea: the planet of oasis, deserts, savannahs, and jungles. and extremely dangerous animals too. not pictured: its other two suns mawu and magec, and its moon oko.
altaduna: the planet of mountains and rivers, there are basically no plains and hills. not pictured: its moon zorya.
dolona: its people are known for living on floating islands above large, deep and unexplored canyons. not pictured: its moon devana.
graynor: where the race of the elves live and thrive, born of the ancient magical tree known as the rainbow oak.
🡲 the magix ring
the magix ring orbits around the tail sun and intersects with the light ring. it has only one planet, magix, from which it gets its name.
magix is the current modern cultural melting pot of the magical dimension, and the planet most similar to our planet earth in terms of size and sun cycles. it's famous for having been the ground on which some of the most important historical events of the magical dimension have happened, as well as being where the three most famous schools for fairies, witches, and knights are (alfea, cloudtower, and redfountain, respectively). it's also where the high council of the magical dimension meets to discuss interplanetary matters. not pictured: its moon sen.
🡲 the harmonic ring
the harmonic ring orbits around the head sun and intersects with the steel ring, the light ring and the white ring. the people of its planets have always been known for their devotion to the arts, culture and harmony of the soul, hence the name.
a rare magical and space occurrence called the harmonic nebula, an agglomerate of cosmic dust, is fixed on the orbit. when a planet passes through the harmonic nebula, its sky becomes a swirly light red and deep purple.
the planets in the harmonic ring are:
melody: the planet of the arts. here is where music, cinema, photography, architecture, painting, poetry, dancing and more grow, evolve, and are part of the planet's magic. because the majority of the industries on the planet dominate the market, melody has the most influx of immigrants, who are mostly artists from other planets who want to find their luck here. not pictured: its moon symphony.
oppositus: the magic of this planet bases itself on opposites and the balance between them.
espero: the home planet of most of the famous philosophers, writers, and greatest thinkers of the magical dimension. for many, it's seen as a place of spiritual retreat (and the locals don't really like that). not pictured: its moon ohm.
eros: planet of love and emotions, known for having the best therapy and psychology schools of the magical dimension.
🡲 the steel ring
the steel ring orbits around the head and tail suns with an oval shape, and it intersects with the harmonic and nature rings. the name comes from the abundance of underground materials of its planets, as well as their deep cavernous systems and the warrior reputation of their people.
the planets in the steel ring are:
eraklyon: planet of iron, carbon, zinc, and more. its people are known for being powerful and fierce warriors with a great military history. lately it has been caught up in stopping an independentist war carried out by its orbiting nano-planets of charùnda, berg and cleddyf (not pictured here), which eraklyon claims as "its colonies". not pictured: its moon rhod.
hoggar: planet of the great forges and legendary blacksmiths. not pictured: its moon hors.
thordal: their people live in underground cavern systems, filled with precious gems and metals. they claim to be direct descendants of the people of downland, a mystical and ancient population that lives underground in the planet of magix.
🡲 the white ring
the white ring orbits around the phoenix sun, and it intersects with the harmonic and the night ring. its name comes from the harsh, snowy winters and cold climate of its planets.
the planets of the white ring are:
zenith: the planet of technomagic, where more than 80% of the magical dimension's tech and innovation come from. an extremely economically powerful planet and kingdom, zenith is also where most of the capital is made. not pictured: its moons manna and gateway-0001. the second is an artificial creation.
callisto: the planet of storms, harsh winds, and thunder. its people live under domes of special glass that protect them from the constant bad weather. its orbiting nano-planet, serenia (not pictured), is known for constantly rotating between extreme climate conditions and seasons even in a day.
stalax: the planet of snow and icebergs. not pictured: its moons hjuki and bil.
dyamond: a once flourishing planet of crystals and gems, it was wiped out centuries ago in a manner similar to domino. nobody knows what really happened to it. zenith has been colonizing most of it for resources.
🡲 the night ring
the night ring orbits around the phoenix sun, and intersects only with the white ring. its name comes from the (not total) lack of light on its planets, as well as the reputation of the majority of its people - witches. only wysperia is currently being inhabited.
the planets of the night ring are:
wysperia: once an empty planet, a small handful of witches, tired of their reputation in the magical dimension, colonized the grounds and created their own kingdom, which grew and thrived. it only has been recently given a seat in the high council. it's where the wysperian crystals (magical ampoules used in witch rituals and spells) are made and kept. not pictured: its moons hecate, medea and circe. they move all in a row of three and are called the "triple goddesses" by wysperi.
prometia: a planet covered in hot springs and gysers. it's currently being contested by wysperia and zenith, the first wanting to create a new witch colony and the second wanting to harvest its resources.
🡲 the forbidden ring
the forbidden ring was once called another name and probably intersected with either the harmonic ring or the steel ring. its name has been lost to time, as well as the people that lived on its planets. its sun was destroyed during the fairy-witch wars by the one and only mad king of domino.
the planets of the forbidden ring are orez, rot and fallat.
● THE GALACTIC DEPHTS ●
there are many other planets and unexplored corners of space in the magical dimension. although exploration is currently ongoing, there are two planets beyond the borders of the magical dimension that are known.
🡲 omega
omega is a planet 200 light years away from the magic dimension, covered in ice and deep canyons in which natural tunnels have formed. it's currently being used (and has been for centuries) as a prison for the worst criminals of the magic dimension.
it's accessible either through a one-of-a-kind (now sealed) portal on andros or light-speed space travel, the latter being reserved only to authorities and authorized personnel.
some internal sources say budding communities have formed for survival among the prisoners, but it has never been been confirmed by any public authority.
🡲 obsidian
another prison planet, obsidian was created to keep a great evil sealed behind its portal, hoping for it to never return. it has mostly become a legend by now, although its existence is very real. all the people who touched its grounds never came back, making it impossible to know how it looks.

Summer Reading/Writing Tag
thanks for the tag @another-white-hole
Open Tag! for whoever wants to
1) Describe one creative WIP project you're planning to work on over the summer:
Umm. Countdown to Magic, continuing that. I've got 17,000 words on that, and I think I knoe where I want to go, but also I don't have as much of a drive to work on that anymore
Also plotting Life Friends & Friendship Ends (version 3). i love that story, but i have to figure out how to make it work. Maybe this summer, I'll just plot & plan for it (as well as worldbuuild. that world has so much worldbuilding. but it can have more!)
2) Recommend a book:
Flatland: a Romance of Many Dimensions by Edwin Abbott. It's a great book about math (but not too much math, barely any numbers), and its also a satire of Victorian England's gender roles & class systems. It has amazing worldbuilding. (There is not a romance, despite the title)
3) Recommend a fic:
There's the first fanfic i read; a star wars rebels one about Ezra ending up with Eli Vanto & living in Chiss society, Last Known Trajectory
4) Recommend music!
Curiosity! it's about the rover just wanting to come home
youtube
5) Share one piece of advice!
If you've got nothing to do, take a walk in a forest (or whatever the nature is like in your area) walking is a great time to work out story ideas

@dakrisart hat ein paar Snippets erfragt:
Kaputt
"Du bist doch ned verkehrt." Bibis Worte hallten in seinem Kopf wider.
(sorry, Ernstl dear, you're gonna suffer a bit in this one <3)
Near-Life Experience
It's... exactly what it says on the tin?

Book Review: ‘Slayers’ Collector’s Edition #2
Slayers Volumes 4-6 Collector's Edition by Hajime Kanzaka My rating: 5 of 5 stars Trouble. Trouble. Trouble. The self-proclaimed "warrior-slash-sorcerer extraordinaire" has somehow managed to get on the bad side of several temperamental demons, a cult seeking to resurrect a certain city-destroying beast, renowned professional assassins, and a small horde of chimera warriors. Such are the travails of Lina Inverse. SLAYERS Omnibus v2 reaps the rewards from well-structured and interrelated storytelling as well as progressively complicated monster fighting. Not every book in this collection has everything for every reader: dynamic and innovative spellcasting, exquisite swordplay, overlapping geopolitics, worldbuilding lore. The more of this novel series one reads, the more one understands the long-view taken to balance the story mechanics that frame all of Lina's raucous adventures. To summarize, what readers don't get in one book they will likely encounter in the next. The author has hit his stride. In book four, The Battle of Saillune, one finds an eagerly awaited introduction to Amelia. The young woman is frequently touted as a "shrine maiden," living under heavy guard in Saillune City. Indeed, the capital of the Holy Kingdom of Saillune, the greatest resource of white magic in the land, is also home to a nasty squabble for the throne. Sir Philionel El Di Saillune, Phil, needs a bit of help from some swords-for-hire to smooth out said political mess. Interestingly, the novel-version of Phil is less obnoxiously gregarious than he is a simple fool with varying bouts of over- or underconfidence. Thankfully, Amelia is a character who arrives on the scene fully formed and ready to engage almost from the start. Her routine speechifying from high places, for example, never grows old. This book's story merges a handful of intriguing dilemmas, not the least of which is the tangled family drama. Phil and Amelia enter into open conflict with Phil's brother (Christopher) and nephew (Alfred), forcing Amelia to step into her own to save her kingdom from usurpers of all types (Amelia: "I really hate not being able to trust my own family," p. 58). But this book's most pressing issue is Lina's conflict with Kanzel, a sorcerer whose skills are frightfully impressive. Nobody really knows where Kanzel came from or where his interests lay. The only thing they know for sure is his ridiculous summoning skill. Pocket dimensions? Giant beetles that slumber beneath the Kravale Volcano? Kanzel doesn't play around. Lina and Gourry's tag team effort to turn Kanzel into dust is one of the cleverer final moves in all of Slayers lore. The attack strategy also hints at other spellcasting tricks to come: Lina deliberately combines innately disparate spells. Gourry is not amused ("You can't cutesy-pie your way out of this!" p. 124). And in the heat of battle, this book initiates what most light novels (or their anime counterparts) rarely do: The story exposes the lead protagonist to grave injury. The Silver Beast, is fun to read but tough to enjoy. Book five of SLAYERS Omnibus v2 has so many moving parts it's difficult to keep track. In terms of character development, the book introduces Xellos the malevolent and meddlesome magician as a friend/foe, establishes Amelia as part of the main cast, and brings back Zelgadis for some righteous action, to say nothing of the title's numerous villain and assassin characters. In terms of narrative elements, the book discusses the challenge of ritualistic demon cults, reifies the dilemma of demons having a grudge against Lina, introduces the concept of the legendary Claire Bible (tome said to hold the secrets of magic and demons), and does a rush job of articulating the immensity of Zanaffar, the Beast of Sairaag. If, in another universe, the author wielded the latitude to redraft book five at twice the length, to allow for stronger characterization and more efficacious worldbuilding, The Silver Beast might just carry the dramatic weight it seeks. For example, Xellos deliberately disengages from most conversations and only rarely exhibits his true skills. Part of this is a power play, sure, but it establishes unnecessary narrative distance between a critical character and his capacity to propel the story forward. Lina is on Xellos's case from the very start, noting his "very out-of-place smile on his otherwise unremarkable face" (p. 162); and yet, because the book has so many moving parts (and because they're all moving so fast), readers never truly glimpse a fuller picture of the character. A great deal of Xellos's charm is his aloofness, but too much aloofness breeds obliviousness (and therefore, uselessness). To be fair, the author shows readers Lina is chilled but undaunted by the mysterious priest. In one of the book's most subtle yet compelling moments, Xellos brushes off the oddness (that is, the humanity) of his new compatriots, denigrating them by saying, "You're proverbial birds of a feather"; to which Lina, dispassionately, points at the man and says one word to his face: "Bird" (p. 202). Book six, The Darkness in Vezendi is where it's at. Incredible sword fighting and perilous spellcasting duels run through this book from start to finish; The Darkness in Vezendi is all action. An encounter with a vicious assassin named Zuma, and not for the first time, pushes Lina and the gang in the direction of a trading hotspot called Vezendi City. Once there, petty merchants, mid-rank demons, and bad luck converge. Kanzaka really put in the work for this book and it shows. The deeper one wades into the story, the more dangerous the river of action. For example, on multiple occasions, the author is writing a scene with five or more spellcasters in action (and at the same time): Zelgadis is up against Duguld (demon, who wields spheres of darkness), Amelia braces herself against Guduza (demon, whose hair writhes like slender snakes), Gourry fights off the assassin Zuma (skilled with the sword and with spells), and so forth. It's maddening, but since the author handles it so deftly, it's also incredibly exciting. Who doesn't want to see Lina cast ragna blast, in which a pillar of darkness arises from an inverted pentagram, set beneath her target, and erupts with scorching black plasma? The Darkness in Vezendi is a showcase, exhibiting every main character at their best. Amelia, for example, has the wind knocked out of her and breaks one of her hands, but she muscles through impressively. The young woman summons several memorable spells, like vis farank ("channeling magic power directly into her hands," p. 36), which she uses to physically pummel Guduza in the face with brutal efficiency, as well as the spell elemekia lance (break) (spear of white magic), which is a modification of the trademark attack, which now splinters into 10 difference lances when the weilder snaps her fingers. Zelgadis steps up, too. Most notably, the golem-daemon-guy debuts his spell astral vine, which infuses his broadsword with magic, turning the blade faintly red. He also casts a tenacious attack called elemekia flame, which is apparently an enhanced elemekia lance, "but was powerful enough to flay a human's spirit in one blast" (p. 322). SLAYERS Omnibus v2 is excellent and sincerely builds its world and its characters, bit by bit, if a little too awkwardly in some books. Viewing these three books more broadly, the gradual integration of Amelia, then Xellos, then Zelgadis (again) is smart and systematic. The only downside is that some of the team's adventures are a bit too convoluted for their own good. Some mid-level demons show up once, only to be conveniently dismissed off-page. Some secondary characters, who serve as the impetus for the entire leg of certain journeys, are laid up in bed and never heard from again. When the balance is off, readers will readily discern something's not quite right (e.g., a villain dying a quick death feels anticlimactic). But when the balance is on, Slayers is fantasy-adventure literature at its most fun. The novel series is at its best when readers glimpse these characters as intelligent, fragile heroes who demand the best of their comrades. For example, on two separate occasions, Zelgadis discusses his quest to regain his humanity. The allegory he offers up is a dark one: a chimera creation is like a person draining some juice into a tankard of ale, mixing the two; "but to separate them again... It might not be impossible, but it certainly wouldn't be easy" (p. 196), for "even a recipe for the most delicious juice cocktail won't tell you how to extract only the orange juice from the final product" (p. 259). When Lina informs readers that Zelgadis rooms in the slums and is charged double the cost of a regular inn ("for a room twice as nice"), it really hits home how much the man has lost. Similarly, readers may not fully appreciate how much energy the author put into ensuring Lina's skills and knowledge base remain as finely tuned as they are. When the young woman isn't out and about, blowing up bandits, she's sneaking out drawing up new spells. She experiments daily. Whenever she hears a new spell, she memorizes it instantly, as with the humorous case of her filching Xellos's four talismans and recalling their "amplification chant" after listening to it only once. Lina talks about altering summoning spells to obtain different types of beasts or creatures; she clarifies the importance of studying, repeatedly, magical artifacts and weapons to familiarize oneself with their magical wavelength; and she openly admits to having invented some of her most deadly spells by pure chance. It's no surprise Lina is all ears when Xellos accidentally starts an absolutely brilliant lecture on the power scales of "black" magic and "white" magic, when discussing Zanaffar. Whenever Slayers gets deeply nerdy with its spellcasting, Lina isn't far behind. SLAYERS Omnibus v2 is more of the good stuff. The novel series' limitations largely stem from the barriers native to the books' original format. One can only hope the author eventually learned to moderate and balance his narrative expectations, depending on the size and level of engagement expected of the primary cast. But given the quality of the stories through six short books, such complaints are small and middling.
