CLUE: The Gathering Murders at Karlov Manor card spoilers ahead.
Tumblr media
“Solve this case in twenty-four hours, or the Boros Legion will declare war on the Cult of Rakdos.”
Aurelia hovered over Kaya and Teysa, glowing and glowering down at the humans as she spoke in a magically-amplified voice. The Orzhov guildmaster made to be intimidated, but paused as she parsed Aurelia’s words.
“Wait…don’t the Boros already attack the Rakdos at every opportunity, though? And, everyone else, of course, and vice versa, of course. But still!”
Aurelia faltered, her wingbeats stuttering briefly. Once she regained her composure, however, she spoke in the same angry tone as before, albeit with noticeably less confidence than before:
“That…is nothing…Will be nothing! If you fail to solve this most heinous murder!”
But the time for scare tactics had already passed. Now Kaya joined Teysa in her questioning. “Say, wait. That’s right. The two guilds already hate each other. So, what would even change?”
“The…reprisals…would be…er…”
Aurelia quickly landed, checking over her shoulder for eavesdroppers as she touched down, and stomped towards the two Orzhov. She drew close, then leaned in closer. When she spoke, her voice was but a mere whisper, strained and surprisingly informal.
“All right, look. The Boros are, I would argue, Ravnica’s largest standing military. It’s kind of in my job description as the warmongering general of that military, to threaten some kind of response to the attack on my life. Stereotypes, archetypes, and all that, you know?”
“Of course,” Teysa smirked sarcastically.
“…Anyways, I figure out of everyone in the city, the ultra-violent and, more importantly, constantly-reanimating Rakdos would be the best fit for a threat.”
“Ah, I see. Saving face!”
“Er, well, there’s more to it than-”
“I understand perfectly! Right, Kaya?”
“…Right,” muttered the ghost assassin.
“Okay…” Aurelia took flight once more. “Ahem…As I was saying, if the killer goes unpunished, there will be blood!”
“Ah, the Rakdos would love that, wouldn’t they!”
Aurelia glared at Teysa once more.

Murders of Karlov Manor not really spoilers it's the first episode
Like, the thing that Teysa was going to tell Kaya is that Jace is still alive, right? And by that I mean it's almost more likely that Wizards is going for dramatic irony over that being the big mystery that happens when Teysa 'dies', right? Because it was already pretty obvious that Jace was her source, so she'd know that Jace is still alive, and have figured out that Kaya doesn't know that, but also she'd know that going "Jace is still alive and also was my source [and possibly also he saved the woman who, even if brainwashed, had her armies take a lot of people's eyes]" where anyone can hear is rather impolitic, but also also that maybe it'd make her undeniably useful ally lighten up a bit. (on the 'was': a fallen Teysa's hand is holding a note on the art for the collector boosters, and in the story she's showing clear signs of being poisoned, and also she just did the big "I have something important to tell you [story takes the character elsewhere]" thing. She'll drop dead while Kaya rushes off to deal with the other possible-murder, come on.)

considering the precedent ixalan set for wotc's handling of colonialism (the story ends with the not-Nahua deciding to do reverse-colonialism on the not-Spaniards which is... super both-sidesy at best) I'm kinda dreading thunder junction to be honest. crossing my fingers that I'm proven wrong and they do better this time ofc, but...

Favorite bit of adventurers bible lore is that Marcille was a researcher developing new healing magic before she joined the party but then learned all the offensive spells we see her use in a single day. Insane behavior. Imagine knowing the top med student in the country and one day she drops out of her cancer research program and perfects the art of making pipe bombs in 24 hours.

The stewards of the old world are always keen to give you a glimpse of their might... According to legend, the ancients built specialized chambers to seal away false prophets.
The Arcane is waking up.

March of the Machine story spoilers (kinda) below!
Alternate premise for why the defense of Strixhaven failed, outside of “Phyrexia was too strong”:
Despite having read of the terrifying Phyrexian conquests of old, (or maybe exactly because of that) many of the academics insisted on going for live captures of the invaders, rather than outright destroying them. I mean, a chance to study a live Phyrexian specimen up-close? The professors must have studied the old Phyrexians’ physiologies and battle plans a thousand times. There’s no way they could lose! And with the college’s resources and brilliant minds, they could discover all manner of weaknesses, vaccines, and even potential cures! (To say nothing of grant money)
But, as one could have guessed, their efforts went about as well as could be expected. Liliana arrived back on Arcavios too late to warn them of this new wave of stronger, more virulent Phyrexians, and most of the college fell
