The Governor
There is very little information about this character, so i decided to keep him shrouded in shadow. This was made using pastel on top of modeling paste, which was a technique I had never tried before.

Mag 50: foundations

today has been a day of procrastinating tma stuff and actually doing irl stuff (my washing! which is always like a four hour ordeal, but finally my favourite hoodis are clean) So, yeah didn't even get done writing things, much less the tma relisten. But I made a promise in the tags of an earlier post that I'd ramble about jontim here, so... I just... I'm sad about them.
Firstly, did you know that MAG 50 - Foundations is the last time we hear Tim and Jon have a good moment together on tape? Barring of course MAG 161. And here it's cracked foundations. Do you know that in MAG 11, Jon says he trusts Tim most of all, for it not to be a joke? Do you know that in MAG 159 Jon's mind immediately jumps to Tim and Sasha when asked where his friends are? They feel like they were friends, really close friends, that just... fell apart. Do you know how it feels to lose your rock. To lose someone you always thought was going to be forever for you? Do you know how it feels to be betrayed, to have someone you thought was your best friend turn on you and hurt you? Do you know how it feels to stand in document storage, and look at each other, and see the person you trusted, and see how it all fell apart, and see fear and mistrust, and see a want to repair things, but it's already too late?
Do you know how it feels to look at the person who represents everything that's wrong about this place, and know that they're the only one you're ever going to trust to be real?
"I'm still me, Tim. I'm still me." "You know what? You're actually right." "What?" "You're the only one."

#the magnus archives#tma#i wrote this in my diary specifically in relation to the ending of#mag 50#foundations#where tim decides jon is sleeping with the policewoman#purely because of the acting#the guy who plays jon played it SO overdramatic and over the top#the delivery was so good it was adorable#like he was FREAKING OUT#so disproportionately#tim is adorable#but i feel like it applies to so many moments#im way too sentimental to be listening to a horror podcast cause sometimes im like#AWWWW THEYRE SO CUTE#like god damn it not the point#jon asking martin if he is a ghost will always be a highlight to me tbh

It occurred to me on this relistening that one of the things Simon does as an avatar, more than any other avatar, is take something someone loves and traumatize them with it. Robert Kelly loved skydiving and Antonia Hayley calls herself a diver by nature. Later on there's the cable car where the statement giver wasn't thrilled with the trip but her mother was, and then poor Jan Kilbride and like ... you don't end up an astronaut if you don't adore it.
There's something especially malicious about taking something someone used to love and terrifying them with it.
Oh that's a good observation

Mag 50
Hey, another of Jonah's old boyfriends! Hope he doesn't have any incredibly problematic views he wants to share with us.
It also does not escape my notice that being a shut-in with a reputation for overworking himself while 'surrounded by piles of ghostly accounts and lunatic documentation' could easily describe Jon.
Hey Jonah, just so you know, I'm about to leave forever so if there's any reason you'd like to see me again... 馃槒 You've been so busy working lately and I bet you could use a break... 馃槒 I can sweeten the deal with a spooky story I've been keeping secret for years, I know how much you like those... 馃槒
Your sterling reputation for 'discretion' 馃槒馃槒馃槒
Okay, fun's over. This guy sucks, I don't wanna play with him anymore.
Yes, because god forbid that poor people feel claustrophobic while they're being worked to death for a chance to get into heaven.
The line 'to create a small place of being divorced from the rest of the world' implies to me that the end goal of Smirke's experiments with balancing the Entities was to create safe places where people could be protected from them. This could go part of the way to explaining how the tunnels ended up being protected from the Eye?
Here's the problem with Smirke, everything is all theory with him. He comes up with all these ideas about the Entities and rituals, but he loses it whenever anyone tries to put any of them into practice. What did he think was going to happen??
Okay coward. The man hears footsteps outside his door and convinces himself he's going to be crushed to death in his office. What's there to be afraid of, it's not like he's one of those terrible idle poors...
Lol, dude's about to get his shit wrecked!
Haha this slaps! Buried avatars are great; I wish we had more of them.

jonah magnus, 1818 - 18?? | dear jonah, it is my fondest wish that this message should find you in good health, as i have heard more than one mutual acquaintance remark on your current state of overwork. while i earnestly hope it is merely idle gossip, my knowledge of your character leads me to entreat that you allow yourself some respite, or at the very least take some further secretarial staff into your employ. certain uncharitable quarters would have it that your life consists of little but rattling around an edinburgh townhouse, surrounded by piles of ghostly accounts and lunatic documentation.

This is me just being a asshole and picky about minor details, but like, there's this whole thing about the architect George Gilbert Scott, and we all know about G. G. S. and his workhouses and The Govenor - and the Buried. And anyway, there's this whole deal about how he worked on a whole bunch of other big stuff, like big scale stuff with lots of people use. Like some halls and Westminster and St. Pancras's Railway Station. And how it's weird and kinda unsettling that there hasn't been more reports - like waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Anyway, I was listening toour best girl Karolina from MAG 71, Underground. And I notice and think "doesn't she take the North line, and more often the Victoria Line? And i'm like "o, isn't king's cross on the way there?" and make a note that i should listen for which station she uses - and the first station she uses / gets on on is King's Cross Station, which the full name of is King's Cross - St. Pancras Station because it goes under both train stations. And she's going north, which could take her under quite a bit more of St. Pancras's Station.
(edit: if i'm remembering correctly, if she's taking the victoria line north, she should be on platform 3, does anyone have a sense, or a picture of where exactly platform 3 goes under / is? )
And who built the front of St Pancras's Station?
Ofc, it's one experience out of tens of thousands of users, and it's in central London which is crawling with creepy shit, but interesting still. (imo)
