I feel like the people who claim Odysseus cheated on Penelope with Circe and/or Calypso fail to understand the narrative reasoning for these encounters.
Both times, Odysseus goes through a role that he has essentially sentenced to the women of the Trojan War by bringing about the fall of Troy. He is made to experience the exact same indignity that they are going through.
With Circe, he is forced to sell himself to ensure the protection of his crew and himself – his hand is forced, he has no other option but this to ensure the survival of himself and the people he wishes to protect.
With Calypso, he doesn't even have that illusion of a choice. Unwilling and trapped.
In both cases, there is a significant power dynamic that leans in the favour of the perpetrator – they are goddesses; he is a mortal.
It's exactly like the fates of the hundreds and thousands of Trojan women who were enslaved. Except there, the power tilted in his favour.
Both these encounters aren't about Odysseus' loyalty to his wife. It's his narrative justice being dealt out for his crimes at Troy.

(Before you get mad at me, yes, I know Eugammon of Cyrene is an important figure and all that. I'm sick with some sort of flu. Let me cyberbully an ancient dead fanfic writer in peace.)

Is there a place in the fandom for people who love the Odyssey and the Iliad but don't shit on modern adaptations like TSOA or Circe by Madelinne Miller, because they think these adaptations have a right to exist and that it's ok to change some intentions and actions of the characters even if we personally don't like these changes?
I don't know, just asking.

I was reading Circe by Madeline Miller and it was the part when Telegonus was telling Circe about when Odysseus was chasing him after he got to Ithaca. And I'm also an Epic the Musical fan so what I imagined was Jay chasing a Walmart version of Telemachus 😭😭😭😭😭😭
