Mischief & Mayhem by Reverie (cl410)
Wei Wuxian as a Jin AU 16k words 6 chapters (WIP) [Must have an account with Archive of Our Own in order to read. An invitation is readily provided on the website.]
“Wei Wuxian, what do you have?” She asked, eyeing his sheepish expression, and then nearly choked when she saw the squirming, vaguely discontent raccoon he was clutching beneath the armpits like it was a stuffed toy.
He looked at her with wide, pleading eyes.”Can we keep it, Jīn-fūrén?”
Astonished, she could only blink at him, wondering how he didn’t have a single scratch on any visible skin. The raccoon appeared mostly bemused to find itself dangling from his arms; it peered around the garden with interest from its new vantage point and ignored the two newcomers.
Nothing and no one had ever rendered her speechless in all her years in Lanling. Until now, anyway. She stared at the hopeful boy and remarkably calm wild animal held in his arms, caught somewhere between incredulous horror and helpless laughter.
“No, you cannot keep the wild animal,” she managed. Wei Wuxian deflated.
“Ha! I told you so,” Jin Zixuan crowed, then backpedaled when the raccoon hissed at him.
“But Jīn-fūrén, he doesn’t have a home!” Wei Wuxian pleaded. “And it’s almost winter; he’ll be cold and hungry and all alone!”
Ah. She understood a little better, now. At her side, Jin Zixuan bit his lip and looked up at her with a worried expression.
She sighed. Caught a glimpse of the Laoling Qin delegation’s arrival and swiftly decided, “Find somewhere to keep it out of the way tonight. Tomorrow we can go to the forest outside the city and find a more permanent home for it.”
Wei Wuxian brightened, bouncing in place with excitement. “Thank you, Jīn-fūrén!” The raccoon swayed in Wei Wuxian’s arms as he scrambled back to Golden Carp Tower as though afraid she’d change her mind.
Mischief & Mayhem is a set of one-shots from Auther Reverie's 'Weaponized Chaos: The Jin Sect AU' series that began with Candy & Conspiracies, previously reviewed here. There are currently six chapters. Each is a self-contained vignette. The first, titled Animal City, makes me laugh outloud at each reading.
It is good to read tales in this fandom that are not steeped in typical canon angst once in a while. I like this world and the stories being told a lot. Since it's a set of one-shots, the current half-dozen is a satisfying read.

ship ask! Yu Ziyuan/Wen Zhuliu and/or Yu Ziyuan/Jin-furen
also xisang
Yay!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!! I very very rarely get any of these ships in ask games, so I'm going to answer them all (because it's my blog and I can :-p).
Yu Ziyuan/Wen Zhuliu
Ship It
What made you ship it? - We know there is a history - he's the only person to ever refer to her as something other than YZY and Madame Yu. What is the story behind the Violet Spider and the Core Melting Hand??? Like, okay, MXTX probably didn't intend it to be sexy, but damn, when you look at YZY's marriage, the idea of her having some secret past before JFM where she really got to live, but gave it up for duty... That's the kind of thing I eat up!
What are your favorite things about the ship? - THE NAMES. Seriously, Violet Spider with a sexy purple whip, and hand that could crush your golden core, two seriously dangerous people that one-on-one you would NEVER want to mess with!!! *Sighs* yeah, definitely sexy.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? - Are there any *popular* opionions about them? /s When I think about it, I guess it would be that they would be no better for each other than YZY and JFM, that there is a reason their history is history, having much to do with the sects they ended up in, and they were never a "meant to be", just a "could have been, maybe, had the world been different".
Yu Ziyuan/Madame Jin
Ship It
What made you ship it? - Because there is a history between them we know so little about, two women who were so close they pledged their firstborn children into an arranged marriage (and you know Madame Jin would have had to fight JGS tooth and nail to arrange it, because logically JGS would have wanted to choose the most politically/economically advantageous option, and while the Jiang had some political clout at that time, I'm sure JGS would have preferred an alliance with someone like the Wen). And because I think they'd be sexy together :D
What are your favorite things about the ship? - To a certain degree, the ship is a blank slate because we know so little about Madame Jin (including her effing name), but what we do know is that both of them are strong, opinionated women who can be vicious in their own ways, particularly when they believe they're protecting their children, even if they don't always show it in healthy ways (this is fiction, who cares about healthy ways lol). And again, the actresses in CQL are gorgeous and remind me I'm bi over and over again.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? - That, personally, I find them more interesting and engaging than any other femslash pairing in the fandom? Because I can enjoy various groupings of Mianmian, Wen Qing, and Jiang Yanli, but to me they just don't have that tooth, that bite that the older ladies do. But that's just a personal opinion - I'm very ship and let ship so enjoy your ships :D
XiSang (for this one, I'm going to borrow a format I saw on one of @fortune-maiden's responses to one of these).
Neutral Ship
Why don't you ship it? - I'm trying to put my finger on it. Because I HAVE read a handful of fics, and I can appreciate the stories and the writing, and it's a perfectly fine ship! How can I not appreciate a love for NHS and LXC. I guess it just comes down to me not feeling it. They don't reach into my chest and grab my heart and scream at me that their story needs to be told in every variation possible.
What would have made you like it? - I dunno, really. As I said, I've read a few fics and tried, so I'm not sure what would shift it over from neutral to ship. I can see the potential, it's definitely there, I just kind of... *shrugs*
Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? - The biggest one is the shippers - a lot of the people I started following on Tumblr when I first got into the CQL/MDZS fandom were XiSang shippers, and they're all such awesome people that I will defend the ship on their behalf at the first sign of attack ;) And the characters are both ones I enjoy (NHS more so, he's my MAJOR BLORBO), and I can at least see the potential in the ship! It's one of those things where all the ingredients are there and correct, but it's just not the cake I want to eat.

Oh! Well. If it's still open then I'll add more prompts for minifills. How about... Madam Jin isn't as jealous as everyone assumes she is. But she knows her husband is a devious slimeball and does her best to save the women Jin Guangshan shows interest in. Any women who are unlucky enough to gain his temporary favor all seem to meet bad ends but she's secretly whisking them away to some place safe. When Meng Yao shows up she's shocked, mostly because she didn't realize she'd missed one.
“I must have missed one,” Madame Jin said, and Jin Guangyao ducked his head to hide his scornful expression. “I cannot explain how much I regret that.”
Oh, Jin Guangyao could guess.
Who didn’t know about the so unsubtle Madame Jin, who threw temper tantrums if her husband dared go outside their marital bed (which he did, often), yet who had a reputation throughout the cultivation world for benevolence? Her lot was a hard one, everyone agreed, and yet she was so kind to those women her husband favored – prostitutes, young misses, even married women. So kind, so generous, saving them from the consequences of his attention…
In the brothel Jin Guangyao had grown up in, they usually called that ‘enabling’.
After all, if the man faced no consequences for what he did, he would keep on doing it, and it was fascinating how Madame Jin’s ‘help’ never resulted in any of those children claiming the Jin sect patrimony as their own – as Jin Guangyao had.
Oh, he had no doubt it was genuine regret on her part, and the help was equally genuine; those women got a place to live safely for the rest of their lives, never fearing starvation or illness, and the children got the guarantee of training in a trade, a livelihood, a life.
And in exchange, all they had to give up was…this.
Jinlin Tower, and Lanling Jin.
A shot at the top.
Well, Meng Shi hadn’t been satisfied with the idea of her son not being able to even try to win, and he, her son, wasn’t satisfied with it either. There was a reason he’d avoided Madame Jin’s assistants when they look for him after his father had had him thrown down the stairs – there was a reason he’d managed to avoid meeting her until now, now when he safely had the Jin name and the recognition he’d wanted, the things Madame Jin in all her kindness and beneficence had nevertheless been very careful to ensure none of the other bastard children got.
Now, when it was too late for her to stop him. “It’s all right,” Jin Guangyao murmured comfortingly to her. “I understand. You tried the best you could.”

Okay, Jin-Wen roleswap AU:
- How much of a problem for the war does Madame Jin make herself because she and Madame Yu are besties?
- Does Jin Zixuan remain constantly loyal to his father, rebel (in big or small ways?), or stay passively complicit? Does anyone make an effort to spare him when the war is over?
- Does Meng Yao keep trying to be accepted by his father, or once he’s rejected, seeing that the whole world is turning against Jin Guangshan, does he decide to cut his losses on that particular front? Would he have any success infiltrating either side to spy on them? What would the world consider worse, a loyal enemy agent, or an unfilial bastard on their side?
- Does Jin Zixun have Wen Chao’s capacity for cruelty?
- How scummy of a post-war ally would Wen Ruohan be compared to Jin Guangshan?

Candy & Conspiracies by Reverie (cl410)
Wei Wuxian as a Jin AU 16k words 12 chapters (complete)
[Must have an account with Archive of Our Own in order to read. An invitation is readily provided on the website.]
"what if someone hears?”
“No one can hear a thing we’re saying over A-Xian’s disgusting noises. Are they starving you in Gusu or something?” she demanded.
Wei Wuxian sighed deeply. “Everything tastes terrible in the Cloud Recesses, Madam Jin. There’s no flavor in any of the dishes, except disappointment and suffering.”
Imagine, for a minute, that Wei Wuxian is brought to Koi Tower after the death of his parents on a night hunt (as a favor to a "friend"). What follows in Candy & Conspiracies is a fun romp overwriting much of what happens in Canon.
Koi Tower is still a pit of vipers, but the vipers are terrified when they draw the attention of Wei Wuxian, encouraged by Madam Jin.
Wei Wuxian and Mianmian assist Jin Zixuan in not being as much of an ass with Jiang Yanli. Cloud Recesses becomes much more interesting when those two find the loves of their lives. Madam Jin is pleased to learn of several alliances through marriage.
As problems arise, they are resolved by two of Jin Zixuan's closest allies ... now all they need is an alibi during Sect Leader Jin's birthday party.
Just remember … Wei Wuxian grew up in Koi Tower.
I appreciated the humor in this story (as can be seen in the quote at the beginning of this review). It is, as the author notes in the tags, "Fluff and Crack", both fun and to the point.

let’s give mme jin some face and pretend she really did get them together lol
ID: an interpretation of the lovers tarot card depicting jiang yanli and lin zixuan, in simplified black silhouette against a golden background, standing slightly apart and reaching towards each other. behind each of them, the respective flowers of their sects are depicted, the size of small trees. further in the distance, the burial grounds can be seen, all silhouetted in white. madame jin is depicted in the clouds above them, with her arms spread out in a celebratory gesture and a radiant white sun behind her head.

Hm! I wonder! What do Yuanyuan's sisters think of Madam Jin? How well do THEY get along? Do you have any thoughts on the matter? (and perhaps also thoughts on where Madam Jin is from, such as if she was from near Meishan or near Lanling?)
They like her, but very much consider her to be Yuanyuan’s little friend.  Every single time they meet her after Zixuan is born there’s a whole production about how she can’t have a baby, surely she is just a baby herself, it feels like only yesterday she was barely taller than her sword, don’t you remember when she and Yuanyuan got caught in that tree hurling pinecones at that pack of wolf demons, it was so cute, why hasn’t the little one fought off any wolf demons with pinecones yet? Is he feeble?
I personally just go with book canon for Madam Jin, which has Meishan Yu and Madame Jin’s original sects being friendly enough with each other that they grew up together and stayed close even after they were married. I like the idea of Madame Jin’s sect being a little less isolationist than I think of Meishan Yu as being, and her being something a  window into the wider cultivation world for Madame Yu. I am extremely torn on Madame Jin more generally, as she is genuinely horrible to Jiggy, but on the other hand you’ve got her deep understanding of how amazing Yanli is coupled with her ability to terrorize her terrible husband and epic tragic bff thing with Madame Yu. Bad people need loving friendships characterized by enduring loyalty and a willingness to protect and care for each others’ children too!

What iffffff…Madam Jin and JGY actually get along well?
“I brought you some salve,” Madame Jin said, and Jin Guangyao smiled.
“Thank you,” he said, and even meant it. “I appreciate it…you know I don’t mind.”
She shook her head, looking vividly guilty despite his reassurances. She looked tired, that’s how she looked, with circles under her eyes that could only be hidden so much with makeup – she looked a little like one of the older women in the brothels Jin Guangyao had grown up in, the brothel owners, despite or maybe because of the splendor she was covered in. It was just how women looked when they had to deal regularly with men like Jin Guangshan, he supposed.
“It’s a disgusting business,” she said flatly.
“A necessary one,” he reminded her, and she just looked more upset.
“I shouldn’t have you of all people be comforting me,” she snapped, though he knew she wasn’t upset at him, but upset at herself and her husband and the whole situation – the fact that she could only maintain her small pretense of power in Jinlin Tower by appearing to be able to control her husband, that she could only control her husband by seeming to be madly jealous, which he enjoyed tremendously… “That’s worse.”
“It’s just a few bruises,” he said. “I’ve had worse. I was in a war, you know.”
“A war is a war. It’s different when it’s at home…ah, enough, enough. Come here, I’ll apply the salve for you…why didn’t you dodge the vase I threw at you? I was trying to miss.”
“This looks more realistic,” Jin Guangyao said. “He’s starting to doubt you, a little – or possibly suspect you.”
“He hates the idea of women with brains,” Madame Jin agreed bitterly. “I appreciate your sacrifice.”
“Not at all,” Jin Guangyao said. Supporting her and comforting her was the least he could do, really, given what he was going to have to do to her if he was going to achieve his goal of taking over Jinlin Tower – yet another man who betrayed her, in the end, though of course he’d do everything to make sure she didn’t know it was him that had done it. With luck, he’d be able to blame it all on someone else, and she’d never know the truth. She’d be smiling kindly at him right up until he helped her go to her next reincarnation. “Not at all. What else is family for?”
