I was abused and exploited by the University of Oregon
I wish that I had a neat little intro to this piece but there is nothing neat or fun about this article. It does not fit in with the rest of the pop culture content on my site, but it is an awful and emotionally draining situation, and I need a place to share my experiences. As I am sitting here, wondering if I should even be writing this post in the first place, I find myself wanting to get…

How Max Verstappen cracked a code that Sergio Perez couldn't | The Race F1 Podcast
The Spanish Grand Prix felt like the weekend when Max Verstappen showed the true extent of his dominance over the 2023 Formula 1 season, winning by a margin that could have been anything he pleased. In the Barcelona episode of The Race F1 Podcast, Mark Hughes, Edd Straw and Scott Mitchell-Malm explain the factors that allowed Verstappen to extend his advantage this weekend, and why Sergio Perez wasn’t capable of doing the same in the other Red Bull. They also imagine the race without Verstappen, and it would have been a glorious one for Mercedes. Unfinity Update to the Un-tensity Scale!
Hiya everyone! Some time ago I compiled the complete Un-tensity Scale for the un-cards from Magic: the Gathering. These cards don’t work under the normal rules, so I compiled the list to divide them into how close to being rules-compliant they are, from the ones that could work without a problem to those that require you to balance cards on your head. The latest unset, Unfinity, came out a few days ago, so I updated the list! In this post you can find the placements of the Unfinity un-cards, but you can also check out the complete Un-tensity Scale if you want!
Un-tensity Scale for Unfinity acorn cards:
Level 1: Basically Black Border — Cards that perfectly work under the current Magic rules.
White: /
Blue: Fluros of Myra’s Marvels
Black: /
Red: /
Green: Killer Cosplay, Tug of War
Multicolored: /
Colorless: Gallery of Legends
Level 2: Almost There — Cards that would require minimal amount of tweaking, either in their rules text or in the Comprehensive Rules, to perfectly work in black border.
White: /
Blue: /
Black: Scooch
Red: Goblin Blastronauts
Green: /
Multicolored: /
Colorless: Nearby Planet, Gift Shop, Push Your Luck
Level 3: Experimental — Cards with experimental mechanics, most of which have varying levels of rules issues, but are generally fine when played.
White: Far Out, Solaflora Intergalactic Icon
Blue: /
Black: Animate Graveyard
Red: Omniclown Colossus, Trigger Happy
Green: Icing Manipulator, Sole Performer
Multicolored: Claire D’Loon Joy Sculptor, Grand Marshal Macie, It Came From Planet Glurg, Truss Chief Engineer
Colorless: Urza’s Fun House, Centrifuge, Log Flume
Level 4: Printed-card Specific — From this point on, cards can care about things black border can’t: art, watermarks, lines of text… Gameplay-wise, things start to get more silly.
White: Assembled Ensemble, Bar Entry, Jetpack Janitor, Katerina of Myra’s Marvels, Knight in ________ Armor, Leading Performance, Main Event Horizon, Park Re-Entry, T.A.P.P.E.R.
Blue: Busted!, Decisions Decisions, How Is This A Par Three?!, Treacherous Trapezist
Black: Disemvowel, Gray Merchant of Alphabet, Haberthrasher, Nocturno of Myra’s Marvels, Rat in the Hat
Red: Aardwolf’s Advantage, Don’t Try This At Home, Goblin Girder Gang, Ignacio of Myra’s Marvels, Vorthos Steward of Myth, Well Done
Green: Alpha Guard, Hardy of Myra’s Marvels, Jermane Pride of the Circus, Plot Armor
Multicolored: Angelic Harold, Lila Hospitality Hostess, Meet and Greet “Sisay”
Colorless: Greatest Show in the Multiverse, Park Map
Level 5: Physical/Vocal/Outside-the-game Requirements — Here, anything goes, from outside assistance cards to physical or vocal components to any kind of outside-the-game interaction.
White: Form of the Approach of the Second Sun, Get Your Head In The Game, Gobsmacked, Hat Trick, Impounding Lot-Bot, Now You See Me…, Surprise Party, Trapeze Artist
Blue: Animate Object, Astroquarium, Bag Check, Blufferfish, Focused Funambulist, Mobile Clone, Octo Opus, Phone a Friend, Plate Spinning, Super-Duper Lost
Black: Exit Through The Grift Shop, Knife and Death, Photo Op, Questionable Cuisine, A Real Handful
Red: Amped Up, Art Appreciation, Carnival Barker, Devil K. Nevil, Goblin Cruciverbalist, Juggletron, Opening Ceremony, Rock Star, Ticking Mime Bomb
Green: An Incident Has Occured, Mistakes Were Made, Pie-Eating Contest, Spelling Bee, Tchotchke Elemental
Multicolored: “Brims” Barone Midway Mobster, Pietra Crafter of Clowns
Colorless: Standard Procedure, Autograph Book, Blue Ribbon, D00-DL Caricaturist, Souvenir T-Shirt, The Big Top, Cover The Spot, Dart Throw, Guess Your Fate, Memory Test, Scavenger Hunt, Squirrel Stack, The Superlatorium, Trivia Contest
Changes:
Do-It-Yourself Seraph and Socketed Sprocketer go from Level 2 to Level 1, thanks to Exchange of Words and Centaur of Attention respectively being black bordered!
Thoughts on some placements:
Fluros of Myra’s Marvels (level 1): While this card technically works in black border, it is acorn because the whole partner cycle is acorn, as they decided to be consistent with this cycle’s acornness. However, I don’t think this one has power level issues.
Killer Cosplay and Gallery of Legends (level 1): Both can make copies of creature cards. While the mechanic can work in black border, it has slow play issues, because it asks you to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the 20000+ cards that exist in the game, and, especially in the case of Killer Cosplay, it is a dangerous ability to make legal in Legacy/Vintage.
Tug of War (level 1): another card that technically works within the rules, it’s acorn because now subgames are deemed acorn. I can understand that: subgames can be a logistical nightmare in black border games, where the participants probably want a less messy experience. In acorn games however, this card is a blast, just like all other subgame cards!
Scooch (level 2): Scooch can’t be black border because you can’t target dice rolls! However, in a wordier way it might work outside of acorn, so in level 2 it goes.
Goblin Blastronauts (level 2): This card asks you to copy spells or abilities that already resolved, so it doesn’t work within the rules, even though it’s extremely intuitive and probably closer to black border than the level 3 stuff.
Nearby Planet (level 2): Nearby Planet has some rules issues from what I understand, but it’s acorn mostly because it might have been a dangerous card to put in tournament formats, as its level of synergy is super high.
Gift Shop and Push Your Luck (level 2): Both are level 2 just because the Teddy Bear token is pink. Literally just that. So, my thoughts about them are similar to those on Water Gun Balloon Game and Sword of Dungeons & Dragons: play them, and if you don’t like pink just rule it to be colorless or some other stuff ;)
Astroquarium and Juggletron (level 5): While these two cards care about their own art (and caring about art is level 4, not 5), the specific way they do is, I believe, over the line. First of all, they reward specific dimensions for the stickers, but most importantly they reward specific placement too, which arguably falls into dexterity issues. I can see the argument for them being level 4 though, and I would absolutely allow them in level 4 games.
Memory Test (level 5): Normally, in Magic, you can note stuff that is revealed and then hid again, as a memory aid: face-down creatures that have been looked at (Smoke Teller), cards revealed with a spell like Duress, the list goes on. However, Memory Test specifically asks you to play a game of Memory (which is the reason it’s acorn in the first place), so in level 5 it goes!
Conclusion:
Unfinity looks like a blast and I can’t wait to play it; thanks for reading! I hope you found this post interesting and I hope you have a wonderful day!
Enjoy! I will return now to my usual tomfoolery :D

The craft beer way of life is all about that feeling of community and collaboration, and we couldn’t be more excited to apply those passions in our Kailua location.”

All of the Maui Brewing Company beers offered on tap will be available for purchase in growlers and crowlers, which can be enjoyed responsibly outside of the restaurant. This year MBC will also expand its natural soda offerings, and add distilled spirits and canned craft cocktails to the brand.

COVID-19 could have its own PATRIOT Act, but we need privacy guarantees
Heather Federman Contributor
Heather Federman is a privacy lawyer and VP of Privacy and Policy at BigID, a New York-based company that uses AI to help organizations be better privacy stewards for their customers by accurately tracking personal data, governing access to sensitive information and complying with privacy regulations. Previously, she headed up privacy at Macy's and American Express.
With COVID-19 infections climbing in the U.S., officials are desperate for ways to track and control the spread, especially with limited testing available.
Google and Apple announced a joint effort last Friday to create a voluntary anonymous contact tracing network enabled by Android and iOS that would monitor the spread of infections by keeping track of people who are infected and those with whom they come into contact. People would download mobile apps from public health officials that would notify them if they had come into close proximity with infected people who also are using the network. The system would use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) transmissions, rather than GPS, so the location would not be tracked, and the tracking data would be stored on the phone and not in a centralized database — all of which will help maintain the privacy of participants.
However, there are numerous other COVID-19 mitigation efforts that are not as privacy-friendly because they employ location tracking and, most likely, central data storage.
Google announced it will release “Community Mobility Reports” that show trends over time by geography based on anonymized aggregated data from phones of people who have turned on the Location History setting. Facebook and other companies are providing to epidemiologists from around the world anonymized, aggregated data from mobile phones as part of the COVID-19 Mobility Data Network.
And the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is tracking the anonymized movements of American citizens based on location data from mobile advertising companies. While privacy advocates consider these sort of tracking mechanisms to be invasive and unsettling, this data does help to reveal the public spaces still drawing crowds and guide subsequent policy decisions, but it raises concerns.
While I applaud government efforts to more effectively stop the spread of infections, there needs to be specific conditions and limitations on how this data is used, or we as a nation will face serious consequences. The government must mobilize to combat this invisible enemy, but we must also have parameters for how data is protected and used. Specifically, we need five guarantees.
Temporality
The PATRIOT Act, passed just six weeks after 9/11, gave the government unprecedented power to spy on American citizens. This may have made sense at the time, but the government continues to vacuum up millions of phone calls and text messages to this day. If companies like Google and Facebook are willing to share data with the government, there needs to be a clear and defined period as to the time span of the sharing and the retention period of that shared data.
Civil liberties
Following the September 11th attacks, law enforcement departments like the NYPD conducted illegal surveillance activities of the local Muslim population. That program has been compared to the Japanese-American internment camps of World War II and the FBI’s surveillance of African Americans who opposed segregation in the civil rights movement.
We must not allow this current pandemic to become another example of civil liberties falling by the wayside. The data being shared to protect us now cannot be used for surveillance or discrimination tactics, now or in the future.
Transparency
Any company that shares sensitive data with the government, such as location data, must be required to provide timely and fulsome transparency reports that are easy for the public to interpret.
Limited use and purpose specification
The OECD’s Fair Information Practice Principles (FIPPs) state that personal data should not be used for any purpose beyond the specified purpose of the data processing activity. We’ve witnessed numerous media exposés and regulatory actions against companies sharing location data for secondary purposes. In this case, location data collected and used to limit the spread of the virus should only be used for that specific purpose.
Data security
The government’s well-meaning intentions to protect citizens does not automatically mean it will secure their sensitive data. If anything, there will likely be an uptick in cybercrime during the pandemic. The government owes it to its citizens to ensure the appropriate administrative, technical and physical safeguards are in place.
As U.S. officials explore their options, it’s unclear what lessons from history or types of data protections, if any, are actually being discussed. We can only go on what we’ve heard from news reports: Palantir, the data mining company that uses War on Terror tools to track Americans, is in talks with the CDC to do data collection related to disease tracking.
Facial recognition company Clearview AI, which has been harshly criticized for selling its software to law enforcement, private companies and authoritarian regimes, is talking to state agencies about using its data-driven insights to track infections. Unacast has been giving local counties social-distancing grades based on citizens’ location data.
Let freedom ring
The U.S. does need to find a practical path forward. There are actually several different types of location data collected, used and shared by a variety of different commercial entities — so it would be best to first determine which data is most valuable and who are the key  partners. Doctors, researchers, academics, ethicists and legal experts should be actively included in conversations with these tech companies.
In addition, privacy preserving techniques must be used when sharing location data. The Apple-Google joint effort is the latest; others include Private Kit: Safe Paths and MIT’s SafeTrace platform, which also allow users to voluntarily share data through means that are anonymized, decentralized and encrypted.
The challenge here is that it’s difficult to actually guarantee that anonymized data (data that has no chance of identifying a person) is truly anonymous, without being subject to additional contractual, technical and administrative controls. And platforms that rely on users voluntarily submitting their location and health status could end up with a low adoption rate, leading to skewed and inaccurate results.
Should it then be left up to our government to mandate all American citizens with a smartphone share their location data in the name of public health? Whatever happens, now, more than ever, it’s imperative that our local, state and federal authorities take into account the various data sharing proposals in a manner that puts the American citizen first.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (2011)
85 Parade Superstars, alternatively named Hats Off to Our Heritage, is a float celebrating the 85th anniversary of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade which appeared in 2011. It featured walk-around versions of many characters that had balloons in the parade which had been retired, surrounding a "hat" prop that was ridden by former Macy's producers Jean McFadden and Robin Hall (the latter of whom was replaced by Amy Kule that year).
Characters * Barney * Scooby-Doo * Mr. Potato Head * Clifford the Big Red Dog * Tommy Pickles * Babar * Blue's Clues * Arthur * Olive Oyl * Betty Boop * Raggedy Ann * Bugs Bunny * Yogi Bear * Smokey Bear * Felix the Cat
Source: Macy’s Thanksgiving Wiki
The Parade’s most dapper new float makes its debut in style celebrating the 85 th anniversary of Macy’s Parade. On board are two of the parade’s most famous leaders – Jean McFaddin and Robin Hall. The stewards of the Macy’s parade legacy for a combined 34 years, Macy’s tips their hats to the incomparable leaders who each left an indelible mark on the procession. Depicting their famed headgear – a cowboy hat for Jean and a top hat for Robin, the float also features a host of characters that have graced the skies of New York in the line-up from the first-ever Macy’s balloon of Felix the Cat to Bugs Bunny, Babar and Clifford the Big Red Dog. The parade’s balloon history comes to life on the frolicking float.

Rowling Wizarding Verse
Canon Original Percival Graves based on Ferrell’s portrayal (Grindelwald fooled everyone up until the end of the film, so we can presume his portrayal of Graves was remarkably accurate when interacting with other characters; also--see Tina’s reactions to him in different scenes to spot the differences between Grindel!Graves and Original!Graves).
Like the audience of the film, no one realizes Graves is not himself.
Abandonment, worthlessness, PTSD, self-loathing.
Alt.
Unlike the audience of the film, President Picquery realizes Graves is not himself and, off-screen, takes appropriate action.
Indignation, wrath, PTSD, vengeance, broken morality.
Like Waves (mer!verse)
Information regarding Percival as a merman can be found here.
Rebel Without a Cause (demon!Percival)
One of the Three Stewards of Hell, Percival recognized the way the Pit is beginning to align itself with Heavenly hierarchies, and attempted to stay the transformation--after all, if they were to emulate Heaven, what was the purpose of their rebellion? Many of the generals, presidents, and leaders of Hell opposed Percival’s views, and before Percival could reach his direct commander, the Morning Star himself, he was chased from the Pit and forced to find refuge on Earth. During his escape, those that hunted him stripped him of his abilities one by one as he clawed his way to the surface. To return Hell to its proper order, Percival must slay each of those who hunted him, regain his power, and wage a rebellion of his own.
He’s woefully unfamiliar with his mortal body and feels confined and weak. It’s been centuries since he’s walked the Earth and is unfamiliar with human customs as they are. He honors debts and makes deals, and even Binds himself to humans with a Brand of his name should he deem them worthy.
His demonic essence is canid in appearance, wrapping him in an inky, shadowy visage of a wolf- or dog-like skeleton. He can heal, summon shadow or Hellfire, teleport, exercise superhuman strength, and “feed” on pain and suffering to regain strength.
His siblings--the other two Stewards of Hell--are Charab (Sword) and Meginnah (Shield). Percival’s demonic name is Qayin (Spear). The three of them cannot kill one another, for they’re designed to work as a single unit.
*when interacting with Rowling Wizarding Verse characters, the magic of witches/wizards comes from Hell, and Percival takes pride in how innovative humans are with their Gift.
(you can see a bit of how he fights in this thread with @liza-reid)
Mistakes We Keep (IrishMobBoss!Percival)
A modern Irish mobster posing as a venture capitalist. He embezzles money from his firm to support the IRA, and answers to Gellert. The Graves and Grindelwalds have a history, where the Graves typically served under the Grindelwalds. Percival and Gellert are only the most recent generation of it, and by far Gellert is the cruelest Grindelwald the Graves family has ever had to serve.
Percival grew up with Tina and Queenie Goldstien, their families also having a history of loyalty and protection going as far back as World War II. Tina works as Percival’s secretary and personal assistant, and is one of the few people who knows what it is that Percival does under cover of darkness; they’re best friends. Tina has patched Percival up more times than either of them can count.
Percival was engaged once, but was later forced to kill his fiancee over a trade deal gone wrong. Tina is the only one who knows he was the one who murdered her. He doesn’t talk about it.
Queenie named Percival the godfather of the daughter she had with Jacob--a little girl named Macy who Percival absolutely adores and would give the world. She’s nearly old enough to start kindergarten and loves fairies and woods and all things magical.
Percival has a pair of attack/guard dogs named Oberon and Tatiana. Oberon spends time with Percival and Tina, while Tatiana stays with Queenie and her family.
Monster Verse (vampire!Percival)
Grindelwald tosses some vampires into Percival’s prison in hopes of killing him. Percival turns, instead. Once he’s found, he kills three aurors in his frenzy to feed, and Seraphina and Newt agree to suppress the information. If Percival attacks another human, he’s to be killed. But because he’s both a wizard and a vampire, he’s effectively immortal, unbeknownst to just about anyone...including Percival himself.
Sunlight bothers him, but doesn’t burn. He heals so fast from feeding that if someone is close enough to stake him through the heart, they’re also close enough for him to bite and drain. He can glamour himself to pass as human. He can typically control how his eyes shift from brown to red, the extension of his fangs, and the extension of his claws. He also has an ability similar to shadow-stepping, where he can use shadows as portals.
Practical Magic (mage|druid!Percival)
His mother is a powerful mage|druid, but dies before Percival can truly learn her craft. With nothing but a stack of dusty tomes that may or may not reveal their contents to him, Percival struggles to harness the power within him. With shrinking options available to him, but a growing force within him, he resorts to carving runes in his flesh to help channel and control it. As a result, he develops a sort of dependence upon his blood to use his magic, and the scarred sigils marking his arms (and sometimes his body) act more as a crutch than a catalyst.
Percival’s magic will flare wildly when he’s under duress, and only increases in violence the closer he is to death. His magic generally manifests as a form of telekinesis or pyrokinesis, but it sometimes takes the form of umbrakinesis--he can only control what it does, not necessarily how it looks or actually functions. With time to study, he can and will master his abilities in unconventional ways that typically thwart the tradition of his forefathers.
Not A Savior (DCU!verse)
Based heavily on CW’s Green Arrow. Playboy and heir to the Graves fortune, Percival is lost during travels and presumed dead. He gets some hardcore training from a mercenary group that finds him and agrees to take him under their care in exchange for funding when he’s eventually returned to civilization. But once he returns home and realizes just how corrupt his previous saviors are, he turns on them and, instead, decides to fight them.
Favors a scythe over a bow as his weapon of choice, though he uses the bow for ranged attacks. Doesn’t have an official superhero name, but is called Grim or The Reaper in the papers because of his black attire and his weapon.
Higher Education (professor!Percival)

Miguel Migs / Colorful You
Tumblr media
                                            _________________
(Bold and underlined denote link)
DJ / producer from N. California, Miguel Steward (a.k.a. Miguel Migs) was originally influenced by his parent’s musical tastes in classic rock, blues, funk, soul, & reggae.  He started his career around 18 years old as a lead guitarist & songwriter for a local Santa Cruz dub band called Zion Sounds.  In the 90’s, Migs ran in deep house underground circles and by the turn of the century developed a number of songs & remixes that gave him a great reputation in the dance music scene.  Since then, he has been very successful with his involvement in projects like Naked Music
Tumblr media
and collaborations for Macy Gray, Lionel Richie & Brittney Spears.  MM is considered a pioneer of the house / chill-out revival scene (late 90’s early 2000’s) along with Dmitri in Paris and Bob Sinclair.
In ’02, his debut was well received and nominated for the Best Dance Album in the Independent Music Awards.  Released on the great label, Astralwerks, this plate of deep – house awareness is best served chilled.  You can hear the influences on his music from his parent’s collection of vinyl.  Silky, sultry and sexy vocals permeate throughout the album.
Tracks of note:
Introseduction – As the name suggests, she explains that we are in for a treat with flirtatious sounds from the Petal Pusher.  See the exotic procession of earthly delights that lead us into temptation.  Vibrant colors undulate in the refracted light of the buttery sun.  Revel in all your sense compilation.
Tumblr media
Think It Over – We are on the dance floor as the walls throb with rhythm.  Bodies all around are in motion – slowing on the good parts.  We match in style, and compliment each other like a match made in Heaven.  We are some one to be seen with (on the scene).  It’s a party and everyone’s invited!
Waiting – This song is reminiscent of the later releases of Everything But The Girl and takes us to a location somewhere in a tropical paradise.  We drive down the coastline with this playing while the top is down – wind whistling and blowing our linen, light fabrics as we hasten to an evening of dining and dancing.
Breaking It Down – Silhouetted leggy models adjusting before the show. Some one calls, ‘Curtain!’ and the spectacle begins.  Nonchalant, inviting sax melts into your ears, aching.
Tumblr media
Days of Color – Why does it feel from hearing her voice that she has known heartache?  With the trumpet, as a solo instrument, pin – pricking with spicy accents that bounce off the skin and makes me think of Gaia. Is there any chance to know how I can add more to life and honor her?  So, when summer arrives, the scent of mint and rosemary impregnate the air.  And early one morning, with the first rays, I watch the world come to life.
Best time to listen:  If you are creating the mood or scene, sipping on a glass of “here’s to no regrets,” you’ll need to be playing this.  Slip this on & let what happens, happen naturally.

Why Lando Norris got a strange F1 penalty for unsportsmanlike behaviour
Lando Norris is the last driver many Formula 1 fans would associate with “unsportsmanlike behaviour” - but that’s what cost him and McLaren dearly in the Canadian Grand Prix. Norris lost a points finish in Montreal as the FIA stewards invoked a rarely used rule to punish him for something F1 drivers and teams have been doing for years. Confused? Norris was too. And his McLaren team was annoyed - especially as it felt rival Alpine got away with a more serious offence. 00:00 "Unsportsmanlike" Norris? 00:26 What did he do? 02:25 Has something changed? 04:53 A worse offence? Trio Arrested in Aventura Mall Fraud Case, Dangerous Fleeing Attempt
Two men and a woman accused of credit card fraud at Aventura Mall are facing charges after police say one them them crashed into police cars and nearly ran over officers and pedestrians while trying to flee.
Ayden Steward, Kara Thurman and Tevaughn Mclaughlin, all 20, were arrested at the mall on Tuesday afternoon, arrest reports said. Mclaughlin, the alleged driver, was charged with three counts of attempted aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, three counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing or eluding, resisting an officer with violence, unlawful possession of a stolen credit card, and possession of a stolen or fictitious driver's license.
Steward was also charged with possession of a stolen or fictitious driver's license and resisting an officer with violence, while Thurman was charged with possession of a stolen or fictitious driver's license and resisting an officer without violence.
According to the arrest reports, the three were seen on mall security cameras in the parking garage near Macy’s on the first floor, with one of them handing over credit cards to the others, who would go inside and make purchases.
When officers approached the car Mclaughlin was driving and ordered him to get out, he instead reversed the car and purposely crashed into a police vehicle then struck another parked car, the reports said. Mclaughlin then drove through the mall parking lot at high speeds, driving towards police officers and forcing pedestrians to jump out of the way, the reports said.
Mclaughlin made it onto Biscayne Boulevard, where he ran red lights and struck three other vehicles before he abandoned the crashed vehicle he was driving, the reports said. He was eventually taken into custody.
Mclaughlin was found to be in possession of fraudulent credit cards and credit card making equipment, the reports said.
Thurman, who is from Ohio, and Steward and Mclaughlin, who are from Baldwin, New York, were all booked into jail. Attorney information wasn't available.

Jesus Hernandez, a UFCW/RWDSU L-1S member who works at Macy’s in Herald Square, NY recently was featured in The Union Label’s “Walk In My Shoes” series. Here’s his story in his words:
I have been an associate at Macy’s in Herald Square for going on eight years now. I started out in the Bedding Department on the 6th floor and was later promoted to the Home and Electric Department on the 8th floor. Macy’s Herald Square is the flagship of the Macy’s department store chain; it is located in Herald Square in Manhattan, NY. The store covers an entire city block, with more than two million square feet of retail space, it’s one of the largest stores in the world. My union, RWDSU Local 1-S represents nearly 4,000 active employees in Herald Square and at the Queens, Parkchester and White Plains Stores.
I have been a Shop Steward for about  four years, helping the employees on my floor when they have issues with everything from scheduling to handling conflicts on the floor. I’ve worked non-union before. What I have found in a unionized store is that we have a voice on the job. In a busy department store like Macy’s, there are a lot of misunderstandings and disagreements. But, because of the union, workers know they are protected against unreasonable customer complaints. I’ve helped fellow members understand that they don’t have to tolerate abusive treatment to keep their jobs, because the union has their back. One of the main issues I see as a steward is scheduling. We have provisions in our contract with Macy’s that requires fair and set scheduling, but we see management violate that a lot. When that happens, we file a grievance on behalf of the employee. RWDSU Local 1-S has negotiated a fair contract, it is up to me and the other shop stewards to help enforce it. Our contract has required Macy’s to provide paid sick leave since before it was mandatory in New York State. I’ve seen Macy’s management try to avoid allowing employees to take their leave. And, I’ve been able to help those employees file grievances so they can receive the time off they are entitled to.
Being a union shop steward, for me, is like standing up to the classroom bully. I get to let them know that we won’t tolerate that kind of behavior. I like my job, and I like being able to help customers who come in to the store, but it makes me feel great to be able to help my coworkers.
Thank you, Jesus, for sharing your story and for everything you do to make our union family strong!
